Abstract: About 10% of all angiosperm species have only 2 pollen sacs (microsporangia) per anther in place of the normal 4. The reduction seems to have occurred independently in about 50 angiosperm families and is a prime example of the parallel evolution of a potentially diagnostic taxonomic character (homoplasy). In the genus Microseris reduction from 4 to 2 mi-croporangia (MS) is a synapomorphy for three of the diploid annual species. We have compared anther development in the tet-rasporangiate (4MS) M. douglasii with that in the disporangiate (2MS) M. bigelovii . In this case, the divergence between the developmental pathways becomes visible late in ontogeny, when the adaxial archesporial cells divide into primary parietal cells and sporogenous cells. In the disporangiate M. bigelovii this differentiation step is lacking so that no adaxial MS are formed. Anther development in a recombinant inbred derivative of a hybrid between M. douglasii and M. bigelovii resulted in the formation of sterile adaxial MS. This suggests a two-step evolution of the character: suppression of the differentiation of fertile cells in otherwise normal adaxial loculi followed by the suppression of the production of sterile precursors. Comparison with other cases of evolutionary reduction of microsporangia suggests that there are (many) different ways to reach the same stable ("canalized") phenotype. This may be generally true for homoplasy in complex developmental characters.  相似文献

Objective : To evaluate the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in severely obese patients and the association between symptoms and objective data of GERD in this population. Research Methods and Procedures : A total of 158 consecutive severely obese patients (BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2) were prospectively evaluated. Symptoms were evaluated by a structured clinical questionnaire. Objective assessment was made by ambulatory 24‐hour esophageal pH monitoring and endoscopy. GERD was defined by the presence of symptoms or complications (esophagitis). The clinical criterion defining GERD was the presence of at least two episodes of heartburn per week. Results : The mean age of the 138 patients subjected to complete study was 42.6 ± 10.2 years, with a BMI of 50.1 ± 6.9 kg/m2 (range, 40.6 to 69.4 kg/m2); 78% were women. The prevalence of GERD evaluated by symptoms and/or esophagitis was 33.3% (46/138). Clinical criteria of GERD were present in 31/138 cases (22.5%), and 26 (18.8%) had esophagitis. In 69/138 patients (50%), pHmetry was abnormal. Fifty‐three patients with esophagitis and/or abnormal pHmetry were asymptomatic. The sensitivity of heartburn as a diagnostic criterion of GERD in patients with severe obesity was 29.3%, with a specificity of 85.7%. No significant association was observed between severe obesity grade and the prevalence of symptoms and/or objective data. Discussion : Asymptomatic gastroesophageal reflux (abnormal esophageal acid exposure and/or reflux esophagitis) is more common than symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux in severely obese patients. Increased BMI is not associated with a greater prevalence of GERD in these patients.  相似文献

Icosahedral symmetry, not contemplated within the crystallographic space groups, is nevertheless present to a high degree of perfection in a variety of clusters, in molecular, ionic, covalent or metallic structures. The application of continuous shape measures to those structures allows for a quantification of the degree of icosahedral symmetry present in each case, a first necessary step for a deeper discussion of the factors that favor the adoption of the icosahedron as a stable structural motif. Examples analyzed include boranes and carbaboranes, main group, rare earth or transition metal clusters, ligand-bridged polynuclear complexes and sets of donor atoms in mono- or polynuclear complexes. Specific examples are found of structures that appear along the minimal distortion pathways from the icosahedron to the cuboctahedron or the anticuboctahedron.  相似文献

We describe a new method of estimating the selfing rate (S) in a mixed mating population based on a population structure approach that accounts for possible intergenerational correlation in selfing rate, giving rise to an estimate of the upper limit for heritability of selfing rate (h(2)). A correlation between generations in selfing rate is shown to affect one- and two-locus probabilities of identity by descent. Conventional estimates of selfing rate based on a population structure approach are positively biased by intergenerational correlation in selfing. Multilocus genotypes of individuals are used to give maximum-likelihood estimates of S and h(2) in the presence of scoring artifacts. Our multilocus estimation of selfing rate and its heritability (MESH) method was tested with simulated data for a range of conditions. Selfing rate estimates from MESH have low bias and root mean squared error, whereas estimates of the heritability of selfing rate have more uncertainty. Increasing the number of individuals in a sample helps to reduce bias and root mean squared error more than increasing the number of loci of sampled individuals. Improved estimates of selfing rate, as well as estimates of its heritability, can be obtained with this method, although a large number of loci and individuals are needed to achieve best results.  相似文献

Stem dissection and dendroecological methods were used to examine the effects of thinning and defoliation by gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) on wood volume increment in oaks (Quercus rubra L., Q. alba L., Q. prinus L.). A model was developed to evaluate radial volume increment growth at three time periods: before defoliation, during defoliation and after defoliation, as a function of species, defoliation intensity and crown position. Volume increment during these same time periods was also compared at different stem locations. Trees were defoliated for two consecutive years and results indicated that volume loss was greater during the second year of defoliation with complete recovery taking 2–3 years after defoliation. Oaks in thinned stands had similar reductions in annual volume increment during defoliation as those in the unthinned stand. Annual volume increment demonstrated a decreasing trend from stump to base of the live crown and volume increment of the lowest log (from stump height to 1.37 m), was always higher than upper log sections, even during defoliation. Both earlywood and latewood increments were reduced during defoliation; however, latewood reductions were distributed along entire stems while earlywood reductions were greater on upper stem sections within the crown.  相似文献

Abstract. Forest herbs differ greatly in their capacity to recolonize secondary forests established on former agricultural land. We investigated whether interspecific differences in recruitment or growth can account for differences in colonization success. Seeds and adults of two species with limited colonization capacities (Anemone nemorosa and Primula elatior) and two species with high colonization capacities (Ranunculus ficaria and Geum urbanum) were introduced in ancient and recent forest sites within the Muizen forest (Belgium). At all sites, half of the plots were also cleared of above‐ground vegetation. Seedling establishment was similar in recent and ancient forest sites. However, both the number and subsequent survival of seedlings of the two hemicryptophytes (G. urbanum and P. elatior) were significantly lower when vegetation cover was present, while seedling number and survival of the two geophytes (A. nemorosa and R. ficaria) were less influenced by vegetation cover. Adult performance of P. elatior and G. urbanum was significantly better in the nutrient enriched recent forest stands and in the absence of vegetation cover. Performance of A. nemorosa and R. ficaria was not affected by any of these factors. We conclude that the extent of seed limitation is probably the main cause for the different colonization capacities of the species investigated.  相似文献

This article investigates the biology of Byasa impediens, presenting its life-table data and analyzing its habitat requirements and the key factors threatening the survival of this species. This study also aims to detect specific protection methods to guarantee the long-term survival of Byasa impediens in Baishuijiang Reserve. Byasa impediens is bivoltine in Baishuijiang Reserve. The pupae overwinter on shrubs or on branches of trees. The eclosion of the first generation starts in mid-April. The adults of the first generation emerge in large numbers in mid-late May, and the second generation emerges from late June to mid-July. The two generations overlap. The adult males emerge 7–10 days earlier than the adult females. Their flight behavior is determined by factors such as perching along small rivers and gullies, and visiting flowers. The males are strong fliers. On the contrary, the flying ability of the females is weak; therefore, they just visit flowers, mate, and lay eggs near the natal area. The ratio of female to male is 1:4.1. The maximum lifespan of the males is 26 days, with an average of 6.9 days, whereas the maximum lifespan of the females is 21 days, with an average of 7.6 days. The pregnant eggs per female are 31.5 on average. The incubation period of the first generation is 12–14 days, whereas that of the second generation is 7–9 days. The larvae feed mainly on Aristolochia heterophylla. The larval period of the first generation lasts for 30 days with five instars and that of the second generation lasts for 30–40 days with five or six instars. The pupal period of the first generation begins in early June and lasts for 20–26 days whereas for the second generation, it begins between late July and late September. The adults prefer the following nectar plants: Albizzia julibrissin, Bauhinia glauca, Clerodendrum bungei, and Sambucus chinensis. The plant Aristolochia heterophylla is distributed at an altitude of 900–1680 m, and the most suitable range is 1200–1500 m. The host plants grow mainly along the paths and along the borders of forests where the canopy is rather open and shrubby undergrowth is found. The plant can hardly be found when the canopy density of the forest is greater than 80%. The elevation range most suitable for the larvae is 1200–1500 m. The ideal habitat of host plants also seems to be the ideal habitat of Byasa impediens. The key factors that adversely affect the population of Byasa impediens are loss and deterioration of habitats. The loss and deterioration of the habitats result in a decrease in the numbers of host plants and a more restricted distribution of the potential habitats. The habitat is easily influenced by anthropogenic activities, such as herding, cultivating, and using pesticides, which in turn influences the growth of the host plant Aristolochia heterophylla and the larvae of butterflies. Abnormal climatic conditions and natural enemies are the key factors affecting population density. The hot and dry weather in summer and the heavy rain in autumn considerably reduce the survival rate of eggs and larvae. The ichneumon parasitoids reduce the survival rate of the over-wintering pupae. The primary natural enemies of the larvae include spiders, earwigs, wasps, bugs, and ichneumon parasitoids. Other natural enemies of pupae and adults are birds. The most important conservation measures are preservation and reconstruction of the natural habitat, which includes rebuilding forests, enhancing management, enforcing existing laws, and developing eco-tourism. Creating a core-patch near all patches at a central area is also an important measure for conservation. In the most ideal habitat, appropriate shrub cutting can increase the growth of host plants, thereby promoting expansion of the Byasa impediens population.  相似文献
