Representative examples from the literature are presented to support the hypothesis. 3. Further, we discuss the regulation of expression of two opioid peptides, preproenkephalin and preprodynorphin, in laminae I and II of the spinal cord and in nucleus caudalis of the trigeminal nuclear complex, where they may play a role in pain modulation. 4. The evolution of human speech and syntax, which appear to be the defining characteristics of modern human beings, is discussed. Speech depends on the morphology of the mouth, tongue, and larynx which yield the human «vocal tract», and neural mechanisms that facilitate the perception of speech and make possible the control of the articulatory gestures that underly speech. The neural mechanisms that underly human syntax may have derived by means of the Darwinian process of preadaption from the structures of the brain that first evolved to facilitate speech motor control. ABSTRACT.
- 1 A negative relationship between intrinsic rate of increase, r, and body size has only clearly been shown using data for species drawn from a number of phyla and covering several orders of magnitude in size. Analyses for more closely related species are equivocal.
- 2 Data for ninety-one species of insects, from nine orders, were used to examine the correlation between intrinsic rate of increase and size.
- 3 Intrinsic rate of increase was negatively correlated with both length and weight across orders, but no relationship could be shown within orders.
- 4 Generation times were positively related to body size, but there was no relationship between net reproductive rate (RQ) and size.
- 5 These results support the hypothesis that documented relationships between species size and colonization success in insects could be a consequence of the scaling of intrinsic rate of increase with size.

Summary In a geographically wide distribution the life cycles of different populations of the cabbage moth Mamestra brossicae are adapted to a remarkable diversity of climatic conditions. This is undoubtedly a proof of its success in adaptation. Some populations living in regions characterized by a drought period interrupting the growth season are capable of distinguishing between one critical day length signalling the onset of the drought period and another signalling the end of the growth season. This study, therefore, is primarily concerned with the geographical patterns in the variability of the adaptional responses of populations exposed to environmental conditions requiring different strategies and tactics in, synchronizing individual, life cycles. It is also a contribution to our understanding of evolutionary mechanisms maintaining median responses to photoperiodically inductive day lengths in geographically different populations. The populations investigated originated from regions differing in predictability of the incidence, onset and duration of a drought period: Freiburg (48.0°N, Southern Germany), Avignon (44.0°N, Southern France), and Argelès (42.5°N, Southern France). Geographical variation with respect to both onset and duration of a drought period consequently results in clinal variation of the variability of innate day length thresholds triggering aestival dormancy and of innate duration of aestivation. In this paper we considered the influence of geographically changing temperatures on aestival dormancy induction. Even in southern populations of M. brassicae a temperature dependent switch off-mechanism exists which prevents aestival dormancy under certain environmental conditions. The effective temperatures vary geographically, too. The mechanism of formation of quinone methide from the sclerotizing precursor N-acetyldopamine (NADA) was studied using three different cuticular enzyme systems viz. Sarcophaga bullata larval cuticle, Manduca sexta pharate pupae, and Periplaneta americana presclerotized adult cuticle. All three cuticular samples readily oxidized NADA. During the enzyme-catalyzed oxidation, the majority of NADA oxidized became bound covalently to the cuticle through the side chain with the retention of o-diphenolic function, while a minor amount was recovered as N-acetylnorepinephrine (NANE). Cuticle treated with NADA readily released 2-hydroxy-3′,4′-dihydroxyacetophenone on mild acid hydrolysis confirming the operation of quinone methide sclerotization. Attempts to demonstrate the direct formation of NADA-quinone methide by trapping experiments with N-acetylcysteine surprisingly yielded NADA-quinone-N-acetylcysteine adduct rather than the expected NADA-quinone methide-N-acetylcysteine adduct. These results are indicative of NADA oxidation to NADA-quinone and its subsequent isomerization to NADA-quinone methide. Accordingly, all three cuticular samples exhibited the presence of an isomerase, which catalyzed the conversion of NADA-quinone to NADA-quinone methide as evidenced by the formation of NANE—the water adduct of quinone methide. Thus, in association with phenoloxidase, newly discovered quinone methide isomerase seems to generate quinone methides and provide them for quinone methide sclerotization. 相似文献

P-glycoprotein as multidrug transporter: a critical review of current multidrug resistant cell lines
MDR has been studied extensively in mammalian cell lines. According to usual practice, the MDR phenotype is characterized by the following features: cross resistance to multiple chemotherapeutic agents (lipophilic cations), defective intracellular drug accumulation and retention, overexpression of P-gp (often accompanied by gene amplification), and reversal of the phenotype by addition of calcium channel blockers. An hypothesis for the function of P-gp has been proposed in which P-gp acts as a carrier protein that actively extrudes MDR compounds out of the cells. However, basic questions, such as what defines the specificity of the pump and how is energy for active efflux transduced, remain to be answered. Furthermore, assuming that P-gp acts as a drug transporter, one will expect a relationship between P-gp expression and accumulation defects in MDR cell lines. A review of papers reporting 97 cell lines selected for resistance to the classical MDR compounds has revealed that a connection exists in most of the reported cell lines. However, several exceptions can be pointed out. Furthermore, only a limited number of well characterized series of sublines with different degrees of resistance to a single agent have been reported. In many of these, a correlation between P-gp expresson and transport properties can not be established. Co-amplification of genes adjacent to the mdr1 gene, mutations [122], splicing of mdr1 RNA [123], modulation of P-gp by phosphorylation [124] or glycosylation [127], or experimental conditions [26,78] could account for some of the complexity of the phenotype and the absence of correlation in some of the cell lines. However, both cell lines with overexpression of P-gp without increased efflux [i.e., 67,75] and cell lines without P-gp expression and accumulation defects/increased efflux [i.e., 25,107] have been reported. Thus, current results from MDR cell lines contradict - but do not exclude - that P-gp acts as multidrug transporter. Other models for the mechanism of resistance have been proposed: (1) An energy-dependent permeability barrier working with greater efficacy in resistant cells. This hypothesis is supported by studies of influx which, although few, all except one demonstrate decreased influx in resistant cells; (2) Resistant cells have a greater endosomal volume, and a greater exocytotic activity accounts for the efflux. Furthermore, large amounts of P-gp in the plasma membrane altering the ultrastructure and generalized changes, such as increases or decreases in membrane fluidity, alterations in lipid composition, changes in transmembrane pH gradient and membrane potential have been described in MDR cell lines and could account for some of the findings. 相似文献

The relative appearance of the parietal muscles in the development of the zooids has been studied in several ctenostomatous and “cheilostomatous” species. A comparison of the different on-togenetical sequences demonstrated that a “cheilostomatous” type of organization of the zooids with a great probability has been achieved in minimum three times independentl and originated from different ctenostomatous sub-grous: the Membranidea from plesiomorgic victorelloids (ancestors of Bulbella with not yet developed peristomial tube), the Inoviceiata (Aetea) from advanced forms of victorelloids with reduced primary parietal muscles (perhaps stcies related to Pottsiella), and Penetrantia from arachnidioid or vesicularioid ancestors (?). Therefore, the classical orders α“Ctenostomata” and “Cheilostomata” represent only “stage groups” but no monohyletic systematical units. The haematology and phospholipase activity and mast cell numbers of the small intestine and colon of rats was studied 10 days after infection with various numbers of larvae of N. brasiliensis. A significant reduction in the RBC occurred after infections with 200 and 5000 larvae but not with 1000 larvae. Hb was significantly reduced after infection with 200 larvae and increases in the MCV and MCH indicated the development of a macrocytic anaemia. Reticulocyte count was increased at all levels of infection except after 200 larvae. WBC was increased at all levels of infection except in the 5000 larvae group. Lymphocytes were significantly increased in all groups except those infected with 5000 larvae. Neutrophils increased only at the lower levels of infection. The most marked changes occurred in eosinophil numbers, significant increases occurring with increasing levels of infection. However, after infection with 5000 larvae the numbers were significantly lower than after infection with 200 or 1000 larvae. Phospholipase activity, which is believed to be related to tissue eosinophil levels, was significantly increased at all infection levels in the proximal small intestine. Significant increases in the distal ileum and colon occurred mainly after infection with 1000 and 5000 larvae. Mast cell numbers did not change significantly at any infection level. It is suggested that the pathology observed, here in the form of anaemia, is multifactorial in origin and is largely a function of the immune response, the development and expression of which is dependent on the level of infection, with suppression of immune damage occurring at the high levels of infection when pathogenesis may involve a direct effect of the worms. 相似文献
