The experimental study of the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem function has mainly addressed the effect of species and number of functional groups. In theory, this approach has mainly focused on how extinction affects function, whereas dispersal limitation of ecosystem function has been rarely discussed. A handful of seed introduction experiments, as well as numerous observations of the effects of long‐distance dispersal of alien species, indicate that ecosystem function may be strongly determined by dispersal limitation at the local, regional and/or global scales. We suggest that it is time to replace biodiversity manipulation experiments, based on random draw of species, with those addressing realistic scenarios of either extinction or dispersal. Experiments disentangling the dispersal limitation of ecosystem function should have to take into account the probability of arrival. The latter is defined as the probability that a propagule of a particular species will arrive at a particular community. Arrival probability depends on the dispersal ability and the number of propagules of a species, the distance a species needs to travel, and the permeability of the matrix landscape. Current databases, in particular those in northwestern and central Europe now enable robust estimation of arrival probability in plant communities. We suggest a general hypothesis claiming that dispersal limitation according to arrival probability will have ecosystem‐level effects different from those arising due to random arrival. This hypothesis may be rendered more region‐, landscape‐ or ecosystem‐specific by estimating arrival probabilities for different background conditions. 相似文献

Systematics and taxonomy of hares of the genus Lepus (Lagomorpha) are under contentious debate, and phylogenetic relationships among many taxa are not well understood. Here we study genetic differentiation and evolutionary relationships among North African hares, currently considered subspecies of Lepus capensis , cape hares ( L. capensis ) from the Cape province in South Africa, and brown hares ( L. europeaus ) from Europe and Anatolia, using maternally (mtDNA) and biparentally (allozymes) inherited markers. A polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of a c. 1.8 kb long segment of the mitochondrial control region using eight hexanucleotide-recognizing restriction endonucleases yielded 28 haplotypes, and horizontal starch gel electrophoresis of proteins encoded by 25 structural gene loci revealed 52 alleles at 18 polymorphic loci. Diverse phylogenetic analyses (neighbor joining dendrogram, median joining network, multidimensional scaling of pairwise distances, AMOVA, F -statistics, hierarchical F -statistics) of genetic variants revealed marked substructuring of mtDNA into three phylogeographic groups, namely an African, a central European, and an Anatolian, but a somewhat less pronounced overall differentiation of the nuclear genome, despite a relatively high number of population-specific (private) alleles. However, all our results are not incongruent with Petter's (1959: Mammalia 23 , 41; 1961: Z. f. Säugetierkunde 26 , 30; 1972 : Société Des Sciences Naturelles et Physiques du Maroc 52 , 122) hypothesis that North African hares generally belong to L. capensis and that brown hares should be included in this species as well. 相似文献

The influence of diet on the growth of Stenonema vicarium (Walker) (Ephemeroptera: Heptageniidae) 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Laboratory studies compared the growth rate of Stenonema vicarium (Walker) nymphs on diets of detritus and natural stream periphyton. In three consecutive runs of the experiment, growth rates
were consistently higher on periphyton (mean growth rate = 2.1% wet wt. d−1) than detritus (mean = 1.8% wet wt. d−1). The starting date of each run also significantly influenced growth rates. In each treatment growth rates generally decreased
over the course of the 3 runs, and ca. one-half of the nymphs in the last run did not molt or grow. It appeared that growth

Changes in glycerol production and two parameters related to energy metabolism i. e. the heat production rate and the ATP pool, were assayed during growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Debaryomyces hansenii in 4 mM and 1.35 M NaCl media. For both of the yeasts, the specific ATP pool changed during the growth cycle and reached maximum values around 10 nmol per mg dry weight in both types of media. The levels of glycerol were markedly enhanced by high salinity. In the presence of 1.35 M NaCl, D. hansenii retained most of its glycerol produced intracellularly, while S. cerevisiae extruded most of the glycerol to the environment. The intracellular glycerol level of S. cerevisiae equalled or exceeded that of D. hansenii, however, with values never lower than 3 mol per mg dry weight at all phases of growth. When D. hansenii was grown at this high salinity the intracellular level of glycerol was found to correlate with the specific heat production rate. No such correlation was found for S. cerevisiae. We concluded that during salt stress, D. hansenii possesses the capacity to regulate the metabolism of glycerol to optimize growth, while S. cerevisiae may not be able to regulate when exposed to different demands on the glycerol metabolism. 相似文献

Consumption of leaf detritus by a stream shredder: Influence of tree species and nutrient status 总被引:8,自引:3,他引:5
Four species of riparian vegetation (alder, birch, willow and poplar) were fertilized with nitrogen, phosphorus, nitrogen
+ phosphorus, or no fertilizer (control). The resulting leaf detritus (leached but not microbially colonized) was offered
to a stream shredder, Hydatophylax variabilis (Trichoptera: Limnephilidae). In one experiment, shredder consumption of leaf detritus from different nutrient treatments
(within tree species) was compared, and in a second experiment, consumption of different tree species (within nutrient treatments)
was compared. Larvae preferred leaf detritus from nitrogen + phosphorus treatments (except in poplar where nitrogen treatment
was preferred). Alder was preferred over other tree species for all treatments. Chemical and physical analyses of leaf litter
showed differences between tree species and nutrient treatments in nutrient content, tannins and leaf toughness. Leaf consumption
by larvae was positively associated with nitrogen content and negatively associated with condensed tannin content. Species
composition and nutrient status of riparian vegetation may strongly influence detrital food webs in streams. 相似文献

Blood was obtained from three species of macaques for a study of platelets. A rapidly mobilizable platelet pool was demonstrated in rhesus macaques given intravenous epinephrine. The number of platelets/ml of blood increased about 30% 3 to 5 min after epinephrine was given. The size distributions of the platelets were similar before and after injection. Platelet aggregability was increased after injection. Basal platelet aggregabilities, as measured by platelet aggregate ratios, were similar in rhesus macaques. We investigated patterns of resource partitioning between two brackish crustaceans (I. baltica and G. insensibilis) on trophic mosaics of fungal species colonizing vegetal detritus. Laboratory feeding experiments were carried out to assess consumption rates and diet selection of single individuals belonging to five populations. Adults of two co-occurring population of both G. insensibilis and I. baltica and one population of G. insensibilis, occurring alone in another habitat patch, were studied. Each individual were offered both fragments of Cymodocea nodosa conditioned by 8 fungal species and sterilized fragments as sole food source for 7 days. Both species preferred "conditioned" detritus but potential resource use was greater in G. insensibilis than in I. baltica. Individual niche breadth increased and phenotypic variability reduced in the allotopic sample. Trophic similarities were lower between individuals of co-occuring populations than between I. baltica and the allotopic G. insensibilis. The results suggest that co-occurrence is an important factor contributing to the enhancement of phenotypic variability and, consequently, to a trophic generalization at population level in G. insensibilis. Purified intact protoplasts were isolated from etiolated and greening leaves of Avena sativa. They were ruptured by forcing them through a 20-m aperture nylon net and immediately thereafter fractionated into a pure pellet of plastids (well above 70% of total plastids), a layer of mitochondria only slightly contaminated by other cellular constituents (about 50% of total mitochondria), and a cytoplasmic supernatant. This was achieved within 60 s by an integrated method of homogenation of protoplasts and centrifugal filtration of the homogenate on a gradient of silicone oils, contained together with the nylon net in 450 l microtubes, and verified by comparing the levels of activity of specific markers within the three fractions obtained. With appropriate modifications to immediately quench metabolic reactions within the fractions, this method allows the determination of metabolite levels within plastids, mitochondria, and the cytoplasmic compartment of intact protoplasts. The applicability of this technique is demonstrated by the determination of ATP in the plastids, mitochondria, and the cytoplasm of protoplasts obtained from etiolated and greening primary leaves of Avena. The levels of ATP, corrected for contamination of the fractions by each other, exhibit a pronounced transient increase during greening, especially within the cytoplasm.Abbreviations BSA

Tetrahymena pyriformis cells in the logarithmic phase of growth accumulate 2.5–3.75 times as much calcium per unit volume as is present in the growth medium. It appears that most of this calcium is stored in a non-ionic form, with approximately 30% existing in the cilia, near its site of action in effecting ciliary reversal. The exchange of extracellular 45Ca2+ with the major internal pools is extremely rapid, exhibiting a of less than 0.5 h. Relationships between soil invertebrate populations and primary production of a tallgrass prairie were investigated using the insecticide-nematicide carbofuran and a range of mowing intensities to manipulate invertebrate densities and resource quantity and quality. The trophic composition of nematode populations was monitored through each of two growing seasons. Earthworm and macroarthropod densities and primary production were assessed at the end of the second season. Invertebrate densities were generally reduced in carbofuran-treated plots, although individual weights of surviving macroarth-ropod herbivores increased significantly (p<0.05). Carbofuran failed to affect estimates of above- or belowground plant biomass after two years of treatment. Changes in resource quantity and quality resulted in rapid responses by dominant invertebrate consumer populations. A 28% reduction in live root mass and a 24% increase in root detritus following two years of mowing was associated with a 54% decrease in herbivorous nematode densities, a 47% increase in microbivorous nematode densities, and a 41% increase in native earthworm biomass. 相似文献
