1. Numerous studies have reported the effects of learning or experience on parasitoid host preference and location. However, the integration of pre‐imaginal and adult experiences on the subsequent host preference and adult/offspring performance has been rarely tested in host–parasite interactions. 2. We present direct evidence that theses two kinds of experiences affect host preference and related fitness in the polyphagous parasitoid, Scleroderma guani. Two colonies of parasitoids were reared on Monochamus alternatus and Saperda populnea (Cerambycidae: Lamiinae). Individuals from the two colonies were given host‐switching experience for one generation (pre‐imaginal experience) while other individuals were given prior ovipositing experience on the two species, respectively (adult experience). 3. Scleroderma guani females demonstrated that their experiences determined adult behavioural responses and their subsequent performance to hosts. Females maximised both adult fitness (fecundity and longevity) and offspring fitness (survival and sex ratio) when they encountered hosts similar to their maternal hosts. Behavioural plasticity in host choice was affected by adult experience, resulting in improved adult feeding and ovipositing behaviour and further modifying adult fecundity and the offspring sex ratio. There was a positive correlation between oviposition preference and adult fecundity. 4. The results indicated that S. guani exhibited positive preference–performance correlations. This is most likely due to an adaptation to maternal hosts over multiple generations. However, foraging potential of adults to available cues from hosts may be driven quickly by an experience‐induced learning process rather than by natural selection processes shaped over many generations. 相似文献

We describe an ultra high performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC MS/MS) method suitable for a routine laboratory to determine endogenous and exogenous glucocorticoids in plasma, plasma ultrafiltrate, urine and saliva in a single analytical run. After addition of a multi-analyte internal standard, a standardised sample preparation procedure with solid phase extraction followed, before injecting into a tandem mass spectrometer with positive mode electron spray ionisation and multiple reactant monitoring acquisition. The chromatography time was 3 min. The limit of quantitation for cortisol and cortisone in plasma was 3.75 nmol/L and linearity extended to 2000 nmol/L. The limit of quantitation for cortisol in plasma ultrafiltrate and saliva was 0.6 nmol/L. The limit of quantitation for 11-deoxycortisol and prednisolone was 5 nmol/L and for dexamethasone 1 nmol/L. The intra-assay CV was <5% and the inter-assay CV <10% for all analytes in all matrices. Comparison with an immuno-assay (IA) plasma cortisol method resulted in a regression equation of UHPLC = 0.79 × IA + 31.12 with R2 = 0.960 (p < 0.0001). Comparison with a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) cortisol method yielded a regression equation of UHPLC = 1.06 × HPLC + 9.82, R2 = 0.992 (p < 0.0001). The simultaneous measurement of endogenous and exogenous glucocorticoids contributed to patient care in cases with dexamethasone and metyrapone dynamic tests and unsuspected therapeutic glucocorticoid use. 相似文献

The mechanism of water infiltration into a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) was investigated based on the molecular dynamics simulation. The influence of chemical functionalization treatment on unsaturated carbon atoms at the entrance of a SWCNT was explored. The chemical functionalisation treatment with hydroxyl groups can effectively reduce the critical pressure barrier and facilitate water molecules to invade a SWCNT. Conversely, the hydrogen groups can intensify the non-wetting ability of a SWCNT. In addition, the hydrogenated entrance system is of higher recovery performance under dynamic loading, while the system with hydroxylated entrance shows poor performance. AIMS: To determine the influence of soil-borne fungus Trichoderma harzianum on the biocontrol performance of Pseudomonas fluorescens strain CHA0 and its 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) overproducing derivative CHA0/pME3424 against Meloidogyne javanica. METHODS AND RESULTS: Amendment of the culture filtrate (CF) or methanol extract of the CF of a T. harzianum strain Th6 to P. fluorescens growth medium enhanced the production of nematicidal compound(s) by bacterial inoculants in vitro. In addition, bacteria overwhelmingly expressed phl'-'lacZ reporter gene when the medium was amended with CF of T. harzianum. Pseudomonas fluorescens and T. harzianum applied together in unsterilized sandy loam soil caused greater reduction in nematode population densities in tomato roots. CONCLUSIONS: Trichoderma harzianum improves root-knot nematode biocontrol by the antagonistic rhizobacterium P. fluorescens both in vitro and under glasshouse conditions. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The synergistic effect of T. harzianum on the production of nematicidal compound(s) critical in biocontrol may improve the efficacy of biocontrol bacteria against plant-parasitic nematodes. Considering the inconsistent performance of the biocontrol agents under field conditions, application of a mixture of compatible T. harzianum and P. fluorescens would more closely mimic the natural situation and might broaden the spectrum of biocontrol activity with enhanced efficacy and reliability of control. 相似文献

Goal and Background Current Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) procedures have demonstrated certain limitations in the South African manufacturing
industry context. The aim of this paper is to propose a modified LCIA procedure, which is based on the protection of resource
groups.
Methods A LCIA framework is introduced that applies the characterisation procedure of available midpoint categories, with the exception
of land use. Characterisation factors for land occupation and transformation is suggested for South Africa. A distanceto-target
approach is used for the normalisation of midpoint categories, which focuses on the ambient quality and quantity objectives
for four resource groups: Air, Water, Land and Mined Abiotic Resources. The quality and quantity objectives are determined
for defined South African Life Cycle Assessment (SALCA) Regions and take into account endpoint or damage targets. Following
the precautionary approach, a Resource Impact Indicator (RII) is calculated for the resource groups. Subjective weighting
values for the resource groups are also proposed, based on survey results from the manufacturing industry sector and the expenditure
trends of the South African national government. The subjective weighting values are used to calculate overall Environmental
Performance Resource Impact Indicators (EPRIIs) when comparing life cycle systems with each other. The proposed approaches
are evaluated with a known wool case study.
Results and Discussion The calculation of a RJI ensures that all natural resources that are important from a South African perspective are duly considered
in a LCIA. The results of a LCIA are consequently not reliant on a detailed Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) and the number of midpoint
categories that converge on a single resource group. The case study establishes the importance of region-specificity, for
LCIs and LCIAs.
Conclusions The proposed LCIA procedure demonstrates reasonable ease of communication of LCIA results. It further allows for the inclusion
of additional midpoint categories and is adaptable for specific regions.
Recommendations and Outlook The acceptance of the LCIA procedure must be evaluated for different industry and government sectors. Also, the adequate incorporation
of Environmental Performance Resource Impact Indicators (EPRIIs) into decision-making for Life Cycle Management purposes must
be researched further. Specifically, the application of the procedures for supply chain management will be investigated. 相似文献

A high-performance thin layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method was developed in order to determine quantitatively the flavonoids in leaves of Passiflora alata, P. edulis, P. caerulea and P. incarnata. The content of orientin and isoorientin was determined, and the results were compared with those obtained using a quantitative HPLC-UV method. The latter employed rutin as standard and was developed to analyse flavonoid content from Passiflora leaves for the purpose of ensuring the quality of Passiflora phytomedicines. The results obtained using the two methods indicate that there are qualitative and quantitative differences in the flavonoids of the reference Passiflora species studied. The two methods were also employed to analyse commercial samples to illustrate their application in qualitative ('fingerprint') and quantitative determination, demonstrating their feasibility in the quality control of flavonoids from crude Passiflora drugs and phytomedicines. A mathematical model that incorporates mass transfer process and biofilm reactions is presented to predict the performance of a trickle-bed air biofilter (TBAB) for treating toluene (T) and acetone (ACE) mixtures. The model consists of a set of mass balance equations for T, ACE and oxygen in the bulk gas phase and within the biofilm. The gas phase T and ACE concentrations predicted by the model were in good agreement with the measured data available in a previous study. The important parameters were evaluated in the sensitivity analysis to determine their respective effects on the model performance. Four parameters were identified as strongly influencing the model performance, the surface area of the biofilm per unit volume of packing material (A
S), the empty-bed residence time (EBRT), the maximum specific growth rate of microorganism (

Low-molecular-mass beta-(2,6)-linked fructose-oligosaccharides (beta-(2,6)-FOS) were examined as a new carbohydrate source for growth of bifidobacteria. beta-(2,6)-FOS were prepared from microbial high-molecular-mass levan by acid hydrolysis and refined by cation-exchange chromatography. (13)C-NMR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of predominantly beta-(2,6)-fructosyl linkages in the oligosaccharides. More than 80% beta-(2,6)-FOS was recovered after in vitro incubation with amylolytic and proteolytic enzymes, implying resistance to degradation in the upper intestinal tract. Bifidobacterium adolescentis, B. longum, B. breve, and B. pseudocatenulatum were studied in vitro for their ability to metabolize beta-(2,6)-FOS. Growth, decrease in pH, formation of short- chain fatty acids (lactate, acetate, formate) and degradation of beta-(2,6)-FOS were markedly different among species. B. adolescentis showed the best growth, produced the highest amounts of organic acids and metabolized both short- and long-chain beta-(2, 6)-FOS. 相似文献
