This study measured the mean age, duration, and sequence of the emergence of permanent dentition in Nigerian children and compared the findings with other population groups. The cross‐sectional study involved 1,078 Nigerian children, aged 4–16 years old, from selected primary and secondary schools in the Ife Central local government area in Ile‐Ife, Osun State. In general, compared to boys, girls had an earlier mean age of emergence of all the permanent teeth. Children from high socioeconomic class had an earlier mean age of emergence for the maxillary incisors (6.43 and 7.58 years) and mandibular incisors (5.28 and 6.44 years) compared to children from middle and low socioeconomic classes, although socioeconomic effects were more mixed for premolars and molars. Compared to their counterparts in the USA, Australia, Belgium, and Iran, Nigerian children showed an earlier mean age of emergence of all the permanent teeth studied except for Pakistani boys, who had an earlier mean age of emergence of the maxillary premolars and second molar. Poorer economic status has been associated with delayed dental development; however, when compared to other populations, the Nigerian children in this study have earlier mean emergence ages than children from wealthier countries such as the USA and Australia. Estimating striae of Retzius periodicity nondestructively using partial counts of perikymata 下载免费PDF全文

Accurate age estimations for enamel formation and the timing of enamel hypoplasia have traditionally only been available through histological analyses of dental thin sections, which is a difficult and destructive process. However, an association between striae of Retzius periodicity, crucial for accurate aging, and the total number of striae in imbricational enamel has been reported in the literature. This means periodicity can be estimated nondestructively but is reliant on all perikymata being visible along the crown surface. Therefore, crowns with worn or damaged surfaces may not be able to be assessed, potentially limiting sample sizes. We tested this relationship in a modern New Zealand sample and investigated whether reliable associations might be identified using only partial perikymata counts from the cervical half of the crown. Using mandibular canines (n = 11), the distribution of perikymata per decile was recorded using high definition replica surfaces. Thin sections of the same crowns were used to assess periodicity histologically along with striae of Retzius distributions. A strong correlation between total striae numbers and periodicity was also identified in our sample. Furthermore, we report strong correlations that allow periodicity to be estimated from perikymata counts using only 10% of crown height when certain deciles are used. Based on these findings, we propose a simple matrix that can be developed for nondestructively estimating periodicity based on the range of perikymata counts in the sixth to ninth deciles. doi:10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2009.00320.x Oral health and access to dental care: a qualitative investigation among older people in the community Objective: The aim of this study was to explore older persons’ beliefs and attitudes towards oral health and access to and use of dental care services. Background: As the proportion of dentate older people increases, the need and demand for dental services will rise (J Public Health Dent, 60, 2000, 276). Design: Focus groups and semi‐structured interviews were used for data collection. Setting and subjects: The study participants included 63 older people in Perth, WA. Results: Five major themes emerged from the interviews – the need for information and knowledge; accessibility of services; cost and affordability of oral care; fear and anxiety regarding dental visits and relationships with dentists. Attitudes and behaviours were slow to change in this group. Conclusion: This investigation provided important perspectives regarding oral health and dental access for older people residing in the community and demonstrated the importance of understanding this group when considering provision and use of services. 相似文献

Several methods for determining the diversity of Lactobacillus spp were evaluated with the purpose of developing a realistic approach for further studies. The patient population was comprised of young children with an oral disease called severe early childhood caries. The ultimate goal of these studies was to ascertain the role of lactobacilli in the caries process. To accomplish that goal, we evaluated several methods and approaches for determining diversity including AP-PCR, chromosomal DNA fingerprinting, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Central to these methods was the gathering and screening of isolates from cultivation medium. Using various estimates of diversity, we addressed the question as to how many isolates represent the overall diversity and how cultivation compares to non-cultivation techniques. Finally, we proposed a working approach for achieving the goals outlined framed by both practical constraints in terms of time, effort and efficacy while yielding a reliable outcome. 相似文献

The use of teeth as tools provides clues to past subsistence patterns and cultural practices. Five Holocene period hunter‐fisher‐gatherer mortuary sites from the south‐western region of Lake Baikal, Siberia, Russian Federation, are observed for activity‐induced dental modification (AIDM) to further characterize their adaptive regimes. Grooves on the occlusal surfaces of teeth are observed in 25 out of 123 individuals (20.3%) and were most likely produced during the processing of fibers from plants and animals, for making items such as nets and cordage. Regional variation in the frequency of individuals with occlusal grooves is found in riverine versus lakeshore sites. This variation suggests that production of material culture items differed, perhaps in relation to different fishing practices. There is also variation in the distribution of grooves by sex: grooves are found predominately in females, except at the Late Neolithic‐Bronze Age river site of Ust'‐Ida I where grooves are found exclusively in males. Occlusal grooves were cast using polyvinylsiloxane and maxillary canine impressions were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine striation patterns. Variation in striae orientation suggests that a variety of activities, and/or different manufacturing techniques, were involved in groove production. Overall, the variability in occlusal groove frequency, sex and regional distribution, and microscopic striae patterns, points to the multiplicity of activities and ways in which people used their mouths and teeth in cultural activities. Dental markers have been used to unravel particularities of paleodiet, subsistence, social structure, and health. This article aims to compare oral pathology among four pre‐Columbian groups with different degrees of agricultural and socio‐cultural development but comparable ecological conditions who lived on the coastal desert of Peru. Three of these groups are assigned to distinct phases of the Formative Period (2500–1 BC), a time critical for our understanding of the development of agriculture and social complexity. The fourth group corresponds to the Late Intermediate Period (1000–1470 AD), when agriculture had its apogee and society was highly stratified. In this study we test whether there is an increase (1) in the frequency of carious lesions and (2) in caries depth, and (3) if there is a shift from occlusal to extra‐occlusal caries locations with the development of agriculture. Therefore, we analyze the frequencies of carious lesions and antemortem tooth loss (AMTL), the caries distributions by age, sex, and type of tooth, as well as the tissues affected by, and the location of the carious lesions. Since there are no significant differences in the frequencies of carious lesions and AMTL between the groups, we reject hypothesis 1. In contrast, caries depth does increase, and caries location changes from occlusal to extra‐occlusal sites with agricultural development. However, we can only corroborate hypothesis 2 and 3 when taking into consideration dental wear. Thus, we recommend that caries depth and locations should be used with evaluations of dental wear to reconstruct subsistence in ancient populations. Life history theory predicts environmental factors to affect changes in life history strategies. However, owing to the interrelationships between body mass and life history variables, it is difficult to discern causal relationships, especially in large-bodied mammals and using a comparative approach. The situation is exacerbated in palaeobiologi-cal studies, where many of the variables cannot be observed directly. Specifically, mortality risk has been identified as one of the most important factors determining life history strategies, but its assessment is difficult. This hampers analyses of life history evolution. This study thus explored the possibility to extract previously untapped information from hard tissue, i.e. teeth, which may be useful for life history reconstruction. Histological sections of 25 molars of bovids, representing all subfamilies and spanning a wide range of body masses, were analysed with regard to: (i) molar crown formation times in relation to female body mass and gestation length, and (ii) metabolic disturbances from early to late forming teeth in relation to habitat type occupied, diet consumed and habitual walking style employed. It was found that molar crown formation times in bovids are highly correlated with gestation length once the effects of body mass have been removed. This differs from primates and indicates similarities in pre- and postnatal growth rates in these mammals. Closed-habitat species exhibit relatively fewer disturbances during development than open-country species, but the reverse holds for adult specimens. This accords with what is known about the ecological and behavioural adaptations of the species and is predicted by life history theory. It could thus be confirmed that teeth may provide vital information about life history variables. Exploitation of this information will allow hypotheses to be tested regarding the evolutionary changes in life history strategies of extinct species. 相似文献

AIMS: To evaluate the effect of Nidus Vespae extract and chemical fractions on the viability and architecture of Streptococcus mutans biofilms. METHODS AND RESULTS: The raw material was first extracted using 95% ethanol/water. Subsequent fractions were prepared from this extract using cyclohexane/ethyl acetate, petroleum ether/ethyl acetate and chloroform/methanol. The biomass dry weight and total protein of samples treated with Nidus Vespae extract and chemical fractions were significantly less than those treated with the vehicle control (P < 0.05). Biofilms treated with Nidus Vespae also resulted in lower percentage of polysaccharide composition. The pH decrease in the biofilm matrix was retarded by Nidus Vespae compared with the vehicle control. Architecture of biofilms treated with Nidus Vespae was different than in the vehicle control and 0.05% chlorhexidine. CONCLUSIONS: Chloroform/methanol fraction was the most effective treatment. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The significant antibiofilm activity demonstrated by Nidus Vespae shows it to be a promising source of novel anticariogenic agents. 相似文献
