Two novel dinuclear copper(II) complexes of formulae [Cu2(tren)2(bpda)](ClO4)4 (2) and [Cu2(tren)2(tpda)](ClO4)4 (3) containing the tripodal tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) terminal ligand and the 4,4′-biphenylenediamine (bpda) and 4,4″-p-terphenylenediamine (tpda) bridging ligands have been synthesized and structurally, spectroscopically, and magnetically characterized. Their experimentally available electronic spectroscopic and magnetic properties have been reasonably reproduced by DFT and TDDFT calculations. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 2 shows the presence of dicopper(II) cations where the bpda bridging ligand adopts a bismonodentate coordination mode toward two [Cu(tren)]2+ units with an overall non-planar, orthogonal anti configuration of the N-Cu-N threefold axis of the trigonal bipyramidal CuII ions and the biphenylene group. The electronic absorption spectra of 2 and 3 in acetonitrile reveal the presence of four moderately weak d-d transitions characteristic of a slightly distorted trigonal bipyramid stereochemistry of the CuII ions. TDDFT calculations on 2 identify these transitions as those taking place between the four lower-lying, doubly occupied a2 (dyz)2, b2 (dxz)2, b1 (dxy)2, and a1 (dx2-y2)2 orbitals and the upper, singly occupied a1 (dz2)1 orbital of each trigonal bipyramidal CuII ion. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of 2 and 3 show the occurrence of moderate (J = −8.5 cm−1) to weak intramolecular antiferromagnetic couplings (J = −2.0 cm-1) [H = −JS1·S2 with S1 = S2 = SCu = ½] inspite of the relatively large copper-copper separation across the para-substituted biphenylene- (r = 12.3 Å) and terphenylenediamine (r = 16.4 Å) bridges, respectively. DFT calculations on 2 and 3 support the occurrence of a spin polarization mechanism for the propagation of the exchange interaction between the two unpaired electrons occupying the dz2 orbital of each trigonal bipyramidal CuII ion through the predominantly π-type orbital pathway of the oligo-p-phenylenediamine bridges, as reported earlier for the parent compound [Cu2(tren)2(ppda)](ClO4)4·2H2O (1) with the 1,4-phenylenediamine (ppda) bridging ligand. Finally, a rather slow exponential decay of the antiferromagnetic coupling (-J) with the number of phenylene repeat units, -(C6H4)n- (n = 1-3), has been found both experimentally and theoretically along this series of oligo-p-phenylenediamine-bridged dicopper(II) complexes. These results further support the ability of linear π-conjugated oligo-p-phenylene spacers to transmit the exchange interaction between the unpaired electrons of the two CuII centers with intermetallic distances in the range of 7.5-16.4 Å.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of mopane canopy cover on litter decomposition in a semi‐arid African savannah. We used a randomized block design with five blocks of 100 × 100 m demarcated in a 10‐ha pocket of open mopane woodland. Litterbags were placed beneath large (8.3 m crown diameter) and small mopane trees (2.7 m crown diameter) and in the intercanopy area. Decomposition was fastest in the intercanopy area exposed to solar radiation (k = 0.35 year?1), intermediate beneath small trees (k = 0.28 year?1) and slowest beneath large trees (k = 0.23 year?1). Soil temperatures beneath small and large trees were 3–5 and 6–9°C lower than in the intercanopy area, respectively. Bacterial and fungal counts were significantly higher (P < 0.05) beneath large than small trees and in the intercanopy area. The amount of N and P released did not vary significantly among sampling sites. Soil moisture in the dry season was similar among sampling sites but rainy‐season soil moisture was significantly greater (P < 0.05) beneath large than small trees and in the intecanopy area. Mopane canopy cover retarded litter decomposition suggesting that photodegradation could be an important factor controlling carbon turnover in semi‐arid African savannahs.  相似文献

The host specificity of the recently described ciliate species Tetrahymena utriculariae was tested in a greenhouse growth experiment, which included 14 different species of aquatic Utricularia as potential host plants. We confirmed the high specificity of the interaction between Ureflexa and Tutriculariae, the former being the only tested host species able to maintain colonization for prolonged time periods. We conclude that this plant–microbe relationship is a unique and specialized form of digestive mutualism and the plant–microbe unit a suitable experimental system for future ecophysiological studies.  相似文献

The genetic variation in flowering phenology may be an important component of a species’ capacity to colonize new environments. In native populations of the invasive species Ulex europaeus, flowering phenology has been shown to be bimodal and related to seed predation. The aim of the present study was to determine if this bimodality has a genetic basis, and to investigate whether the polymorphism in flowering phenology is genetically linked to seed predation, pod production and growth patterns. We set up an experiment raising maternal families in a common garden. Based on mixed analyses of variance and correlations among maternal family means, we found genetic differences between the two main flowering types and confirmed that they reduced seed predation in two different ways: escape in time or predator satiation. We suggest that this polymorphism in strategy may facilitate maintain high genetic diversity for flowering phenology and related life‐history traits in native populations of this species, hence providing high evolutionary potential for these traits in invaded areas.  相似文献

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is a polyglutamine disorder caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the coding region of a gene encoding ataxin-3, a protein of yet unknown function. Based on a comprehensive computational analysis, we propose a structural model and structure-based functions for ataxin-3. Our predictive strategy comprises the compilation of multiple sequence and structure alignments of carefully selected proteins related to ataxin-3. These alignments are consistent with additional information on sequence motifs, secondary structure, and domain architectures. The application of complementary methods revealed the homology of ataxin-3 to ENTH and VHS domain proteins involved in membrane trafficking and regulatory adaptor functions. We modeled the structure of ataxin-3 using the adaptin AP180 as a template and assessed the reliability of the model by comparison with known sequence and structural features. We could further infer potential functions of ataxin-3 in agreement with known experimental data. Our database searches also identified an as yet uncharacterized family of proteins, which we named josephins because of their pronounced homology to the Josephin domain of ataxin-3.  相似文献

Short range side chain‐backbone hydrogen bonded motifs involving Asn and Gln residues have been identified from a data set of 1370 protein crystal structures (resolution ≤ 1.5 Å). Hydrogen bonds involving residues i ? 5 to i + 5 have been considered. Out of 12,901 Asn residues, 3403 residues (26.4%) participate in such interactions, while out of 10,934 Gln residues, 1780 Gln residues (16.3%) are involved in these motifs. Hydrogen bonded ring sizes (Cn, where n is the number of atoms involved), directionality and internal torsion angles are used to classify motifs. The occurrence of the various motifs in the contexts of protein structure is illustrated. Distinct differences are established between the nature of motifs formed by Asn and Gln residues. For Asn, the most highly populated motifs are the C10 (COδi …NHi + 2), C13 (COδi …NHi + 3) and C17 (NδHi …COi ? 4) structures. In contrast, Gln predominantly forms C16 (COεi …NHi ? 3), C12 (NεHi …COi ? 2), C15 (NεHi …COi ? 3) and C18 (NεHi …COi ? 4) motifs, with only the C18motif being analogous to the Asn C17structure. Specific conformational types are established for the Asn containing motifs, which mimic backbone β‐turns and α‐turns. Histidine residues are shown to serve as a mimic for Asn residues in side chain‐backbone hydrogen bonded ring motifs. Illustrative examples from protein structures are considered. Backgroud A newly acquired rhesus macaque was suffering from rapid destruction of the left cheek caused by necrotizing stomatitis. Methods To restore reconstructive surgery and intensive care with antibiotics, wound protection, wound healing agents, and debridement were applied. Results Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis were isolated from the culture of the lesion, and the antibiotic susceptibility test revealed methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection. Vancomycin and ampicillin‐sulbactam effectively treated the bacterial infections, and reconstructive surgery was performed once the infection was cleared. Topical application of recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) was useful to treat exposed wound of the noma lesion. Conclusions Simian noma associated with methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) had not previously been reported in non‐human primates. Although noma associated with MRSA is hard to cure because of its rapid and destructive progress, the aggressive therapy used in this study led to the successful resolution of an acute necrotic stomatitis lesion in a rhesus macaque.  相似文献

This study aimed to examine miR‐140 expression in clinical samples from tuberculosis (TB) patients and to explore the molecular mechanisms of miR‐140 in host‐bacterial interactions during Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M tb) infections. The miR‐140 expression and relevant mRNA expression were detected by quantitative real‐time PCR (qRT‐PCR); the protein expression levels were analysed by ELISA and western blot; M tb survival was measured by colony formation unit assay; potential interactions between miR‐140 and the 3′ untranslated region (UTR) of tumour necrosis factor receptor‐associated factor 6 (TRAF6) was confirmed by luciferase reporter assay. MiR‐140 was up‐regulated in the human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from TB patients and in THP‐1 and U937 cells with M tb infection. Overexpression of miR‐140 promoted M tb survival; on the other hand, miR‐140 knockdown attenuated M tb survival. The pro‐inflammatory cytokines including interleukin 6, tumour necrosis‐α, interleukin‐1β and interferon‐γ were enhanced by M tb infection in THP‐1 and U937 cells. MiR‐140 overexpression reduced these pro‐inflammatory cytokines levels in THP‐1 and U937 cells with M tb infection; while knockdown of miR‐140 exerted the opposite actions. TRAF6 was identified to be a downstream target of miR‐140 and was negatively modulated by miR‐140. TRAF6 overexpression increased the pro‐inflammatory cytokines levels and partially restored the suppressive effects of miR‐140 overexpression on pro‐inflammatory cytokines levels in THP‐1 and U937 cells with M tb infection. In conclusion, our results implied that miR‐140 promoted M tb survival and reduced the pro‐inflammatory cytokines levels in macrophages with M tb infection partially via modulating TRAF6 expression.  相似文献
