Life history theory predicts that individuals should maximize lifetime reproductive success (LRS) by breeding as soon as they reach sexual maturity, yet many species delay breeding, either because there are insufficient available mates or breeding sites, or because delayed breeding yields higher LRS. Accipitriform species, such as Cooper's Hawk Accipiter cooperii, exhibit both delayed breeding and delayed plumage maturation. However, in certain circumstances, first‐year females in non‐definitive plumage do breed and apparently compete with older females for high‐quality breeding territories. We predicted that these young females are at a competitive disadvantage compared with older females and that older females would have both higher reproductive success and be able to acquire higher quality nesting territories. We conducted brood counts and measured prey delivery rates by male Cooper's Hawks in an expanding urban population located in Albuquerque, New Mexico (USA), to assess our prediction. We found that older females had higher reproductive success, fledging 1.6 more offspring than younger females, and that they occupied territories where males provisioned at higher rates of 0.37 more prey items per 2‐h period. Our results showed that older females fared better than first‐year females but it is unclear if this is the result of passive or active competition. Older females initiated nesting 14.3 days sooner than first‐year females and thus may have filled vacant, high‐quality territories before first‐year females began seeking mates. Additionally, first‐year females were never observed persistently to confront older females for breeding territories, but they did actively compete against each other. First‐year females may defer to older females who, in a direct competitive interaction, would be most likely to prevail. Thus, delayed plumage maturation in Cooper's Hawks may serve to focus competition for nesting territories within age classes.  相似文献

Bioluminescence is a biochemical process occurring in many organisms. Bacterial bioluminescence has been investigated extensively that lead to many applications of such knowledge. Quorum sensing in the bioluminescent bacteria is a chemical signal process to recognize the strength of its own population to start luminescence in harmony. There is a mechanism in these bacteria to also recognize inter‐species strength. When there is a higher number of these bacteria, the possibility and frequency of cell–cell physical contact will be high. In this study, the physical proximity was artificially enhanced between cells and the effect on luminescence in the concentrated cells in the normal culture medium and in the presence of other non‐bacterial cell‐free supernatants was investigated. The role of such physical contact in the quorum sensing in the bioluminescence is not known. Increase in the luminescence of V. fischeri when concentrated shows that the presence of physical proximity facilitates the quorum sensing for their bioluminescence. Juvenile brown trout Salmo trutta from natural populations reacted to the presence of piscivorous brown trout by increasing the use of refuges. In contrast, second‐generation hatchery fish and the offspring of wild fish raised under hatchery conditions were insensitive to predation risk. The diel pattern of activity also differed between wild and hatchery brown trout. Second‐generation hatchery fish were predominantly active during daytime regardless of risk levels. Wild fish, however, showed a shift towards nocturnal activity in the presence of predators. These findings emphasize the potential role of domestication in weakening behavioural defences. They support the idea that the behavioural divergence between wild and domesticated individuals can arise from a process of direct or indirect selection on reduced responsiveness to predation risk, or as a lack of previous experience with predators.  相似文献

Typically, excitatory synaptic coupling is thought of as an influence that accelerates and propagates firing in neuronal networks. This paper reviews recent results explaining how, contrary to these expectations, the presence of excitatory synaptic coupling can drastically slow oscillations in a network and how localized, sustained activity can arise in a network with purely excitatory coupling, without sustained inputs. These two effects stem from interactions of excitatory coupling with two different forms of intrinsic neuronal dynamics, and both serve to highlight the fact that the influence of synaptic coupling in a network depends strongly on the intrinsic properties of cells in the network.This work was partially supported by the National Science Foundation, under award DMS-0414023  相似文献

In order to investigate the role of water network in collagen structure, measurement of dielectric permittivity was performed on bovine Achilles' tendon as a function of water content. The data show a sudden decrease of the permittivity at each measured frequency value when the tendon humidity decreases. A similar behaviour is shown by the total number of photons emitted in delayed luminescence (DL) experiments. The comparison of the two results is in agreement with the hypothesis that DL is connected to the excitation and subsequent decay of collective electronic states, whose properties depend on the organized structure of the system.  相似文献

New complexes based on a coordination interaction between a pyridyl-porphyrin (namely 5,10,15-tritolyl-20-(4-pyridyl)porphyrin, 5,10,15-tritolyl-20-(3-pyridyl)porphyrin or 5,10,15-triphenyl-20-(4-pyridyl)porphyrin) and a Keggin-type polyoxometalate (α-[MSiW11O39]6−, M = Co2+ or Ni2+) are formed in solution. The formation of these complexes is clearly evidenced by steady-state and time-resolved luminescence measurements. A strong quenching of the porphyrin fluorescence, accompanied by an important shortening of the fluorescence lifetime, is observed upon addition of the POM and formation of the complexes. Using a variant of the Job’s method from the luminescence spectra, the association constants of the complexes have been estimated to be around 106 L mol−1. Paramagnetic 1H NMR experiments confirm the formation of the complexes. Indeed, in addition to broadenings of the signals, the coordination binding of the POM to the porphyrin induces large high-frequency shifts for the protons of the pyridyl group coordinated to the paramagnetic metal, and low-frequency shifts for all the other resonances.  相似文献

Hydrogen peroxide production by the NADPH oxidase Duox1 occurs during activation of respiratory epithelial cells stimulated by purified bacterial ligands, such as lipopolysaccharide. Here, we characterize Duox activation using intact bacterial cells of several airway pathogens. We found that only Pseudomonas aeruginosa, not Burkholderia cepacia or Staphylococcus aureus, triggers H2O2 production in bronchial epithelial cells in a calcium-dependent but predominantly ATP-independent manner. Moreover, by comparing mutant Pseudomonas strains, we identify several virulence factors that participate in Duox activation, including the type-three secretion system. These data provide insight on Duox activation by mechanisms unique to P. aeruginosa.  相似文献

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from selected transitions of Eu(III) in resolved single crystals of Na3[Eu(ODA)3].2NaClO4.6H2O are compared to CPL results obtained from solutions containing perturbed racemic mixtures of Eu(2,6-pyridine-dicarboxylate)3 (3-) and enantiomerically pure d-f helicate LambdaLambda-(-)EuCr(L8)3] in order to determine an empirical relationship between helicity and CPL spectra. Comparison of the CPL results, even for the magnetic dipole allowed transitions of Eu(III) where one measures large chiral discrimination, shows that the signs and magnitudes do not correlate with the overall helicity of the Eu(III) site. It is concluded that the symmetry of the Eu(III) site in LambdaLambda-(-)EuCr(L8)3 is not close enough to D3 to allow for the confirmation of the presumed spectra:structure correlation.  相似文献

The present study was designed to characterize pharmacological, biophysical and electrophysiological properties of the recombinant human cardiac I Ks (KCNQ1/KCNE1) channels at physiological temperature. Human cardiac KCNQ1 and KCNE1 genes were cotransfected into HEK 293 cells, and a cell clone stably expressing both genes was selected. Membrane currents were recorded using a perforated patch-clamp technique. The typical I Ks was slowly activated upon depolarization voltages in HEK 293 cells stably expressing human cardiac KCNQ1 and KCNE1 genes, and the current was inhibited by I Ks blockers HMR 1556 and chromanol 293B, with 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC50s) of 83.8 nM and 9.2 μM, respectively. I Ks showed a significant temperature-dependent increase in its magnitude upon elevating bath temperature to 36°C from room temperature (21°C). The current was upregulated by the β-adrenoceptor agonist isoproterenol, and the effect was reversed by H89. In addition, I Ks was inhibited by Ba2+ in a concentration-dependent manner (IC50 = 1.4 mM). Action potential clamp revealed a “bell-shaped” time course of I Ks during the action potential, and maximal peak current was seen at the plateau of the action potential. A significant use- and frequency-dependent increase of I Ks was observed during a train of action potential clamp. These results indicate that the recombinant human cardiac I Ks stably expressed in HEK 293 cells is similar to native I Ks in drug sensitivity and regulated by Ba2+ and β-adrenoceptor via the cyclic adenosine monophosphate/protein kinase A pathway. Importantly, the current exhibits significant temperature dependence, a bell-shaped time course during action potential and prominent use- or frequency-dependent accumulation during a train of action potentials.  相似文献

Spraying low concentrated (0.5–5.0 mM) solutions of NaHSO3 on Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.) leaves resulted in enhancement (maximal about 15 % at 1 mM NaHSO3) of net photosynthetic rate (P N) for 6 d. The potential photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2, Fv/Fm) and the quantum yield of PS2 electron transport (ΦPS2) were increased under strong photon flux density (PFD). The slow phase of millisecond delayed light emission (ms-DLE) was increased, showing that the transmembrane proton motive force related to photophosphorylation was enhanced. We also observed that low concentrations of NaHSO3 promoted the production of ATP in irradiated leaves. We suggest that the increase in P N in Satsuma mandarin leaves caused by low concentrations of NaHSO3 solution may have been due to the stimulation of photophosphorylation and, hence, the increase in photochemical efficiency through speeding-up of PS2 electron transport. Photoinhibition of photosynthesis in leaves was modified by NaHSO3 treatment under high PFD. Hence the increase in leaf dry mass seems to be associated with the mitigation of photoinhibition caused by strong PFD.  相似文献
