The main concern regarding methylmercury neurotoxicity relates to adverse effects on the brain during development. Many environmental chemicals may act as developmental neurotoxicants, but solid documentation from epidemiological studies exists only on methylmercury, lead, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Neurobehavioral tests may reveal subtle dysfunctions, but the tests chosen must be valid and appropriate for the setting. In a prospective study in the Faroe Islands, the main neuropsychological functions affected by prenatal methylmercury exposure were attention, language and memory. Deficits in visuospatial function were mainly related to postnatal exposures. These associations were stable after adjustment for confounders and exclusion of the children with the highest exposures to methylmercury and PCBs. Tests with good psychometric properties were more likely to show an association with mercury exposure. Greater sensitivity was also seen with tests administered by specialized academic staff rather than a trained technician. Despite highly significant effects on nervous system function, the deficits were subtle, and mercury exposure explained only a small part of the variation. Available evidence suggests that neurotoxicity may have severe implications on public health, but current methods are not amenable to application as sentinels of adverse health effects in environmental health surveillance.  相似文献

Delayed plumage maturation refers to the presence of nonadultlike immature plumages (juvenal plumage excluded). It is usually considered the result of selection for distinctive first-winter or first-summer appearance. In the present study, evolution of delayed plumage maturation is examined in the shorebirds: the sandpipers, plovers, gulls, and their allies. Nine plumage-maturation characters were identified, and their states were superimposed onto topologies generated during two recent investigations of shorebird relationships (Sibley and Ahlquist; revised Strauch). The characters were then optimized so as to assign character states to interior nodes of the trees in the most parsimonious way. Reconstructions of character evolution on six of the shortest revised Strauch trees were ambiguous with respect to delayed plumage maturation in the hypothetical ancestral shorebird. If plumage maturation was not delayed in the shorebird ancestor, optimization indicated that delay appeared when nonadultlike juvenal feathers were acquired. In contrast, on the single Sibley and Ahlquist tree, absence of delayed plumage maturation in the shorebird ancestor was indicated unambiguously, with three evolutionary novelties (nonadultlike juvenal feathers, seasonal plumage change, and a reduced first-spring molt) implicated in its acquisition. Optimization indicated that delayed plumage maturation in shorebirds can be explained plausibly without invoking selection for distinctive first-winter or first-summer appearance. Two of the novel conditions generating delayed plumage maturation (modified juvenal feathers and seasonal plumage change) did so only because they were acquired in a taxon possessing restricted first-year molts, which are primitive. Given these observations, it seems simplest to explain the delay in plumage maturation as an incidental consequence of the phylogenetic inertia of shorebird molts. The third novelty that generates delayed plumage maturation, a reduced first-spring molt, may have been acquired to reduce molt-associated energetic demands in young birds.  相似文献

A mathematical model was developed for resolved temporal transients of experimentally recorded delayed fluorescence (DF) induction signal. During an intermittent light regime, antennas of the photosynthetic apparatus were treated as targets, repeatedly hit by potentially absorbable photons within a series of consecutive light flashes. Formulas were derived for the number of antennas, cumulatively hit by a specific number of photons, as a function of the flash serial number (time). Model parameters included number of absorbable photons in one flash, antenna sizes, and their number. A series of induction curves were analyzed, obtained from a Zea mays leaf segment and differing in the previous dark period (t d). Each curve, consisting of the two most prominent DF transients (C and D), was fitted with several model types, differing in the number of absorbed photons. For both transients, the best fitting result was achieved when DF induction was linked to the second absorbed photon. As expected, model parameters related to antenna sizes showed weaker dependence on t d than those referring to antenna number. With restrictions applied to this model, the two DF induction transients may be related to two classes of photosynthetic antennas. Their different sizes may have a predominant influence on the efficiency of photon absorption and possibly time-dependent appearance of DF transients. The sedimentary features and fossils within the Wadi Hasa Marl Formation coupled with optical luminescence chronology indicate alternating wet and dry periods have occurred on the Jordanian plateau since the last interglacial. The Jurf Ed Darawish Member rests unconformably on the Maastrichtian Muwaqqar Chalk Marl Formation and is composed predominantly of poorly sorted, clast-supported conglomerate. Palaeocurrents and clast composition indicate provenance from Cretaceous sedimentary rocks and Tertiary basalts to the west and southwest of the study site and the facies suggest a flashy alluvial depositional environment probably similar to the modern wadis. The overlying Burma Member consists of bedded grey-green clayey silts and marls with calcrete profiles, up to 1.2 m thick, and isolated gravel lenses. The fine-grained sediments contain charophytes, ostracods, bivalves and various species of gastropod indicating normal freshwater lacustrine conditions. The calcretes contain a poorly preserved fauna suggesting lacustrine deposition followed by subaerial exposure and pedogenesis. Three optical luminescence ages have been obtained from the Burma Member which suggest that the member ranges in age from >111 ka through to <40 ka. The facies variations are indicative of climatic fluctuations in Jordan during this period and human artefacts are found embedded in the sediments. This preliminary study suggests that the Late Quaternary central Jordan sedimentary record may preserve valuable evidence of complex climatic variation which will supplement the data from the Jordan Valley where tectonic activity complicates the sedimentary record.  相似文献

The reproductive ability of female tephritids can be limited and prevented by denying access to host plants and restricting the dietary precursors of vitellogenesis. The mechanisms underlying the delayed egg production in each case are initiated by different physiological processes that are anticipated to have dissimilar effects on lifespan and reproductive ability later in life. The egg‐laying abilities of laboratory‐reared females of the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata Wiedmann) and melon fly (Bactrocera cucurbitae Coquillett) from Hawaii are delayed or suppressed by limiting access to host fruits and dietary protein. In each case, this is expected to prevent the loss of lifespan associated with reproduction until protein or hosts are introduced. Two trends are observed in each species: first, access to protein at eclosion leads to a greater probability of survival and a higher reproductive ability than if it is delayed and, second, delayed host access reduces lifetime reproductive ability without improving life expectancy. When host access and protein availability are delayed, the rate of reproductive senescence is reduced in the medfly, whereas the rate of reproductive senescence is generally increased in the melon fly. Overall, delaying reproduction lowers the fitness of females by constraining their fecundity for the remainder of the lifespan without extending the lifespan. © 2013 The Royal Entomological Society  相似文献

The examination of four species of luminous bacteria Photobacterium leiognathi, Photobacterium phosphoreum, Vibrio fischeri and Vibrio harveyi has enabled us to reveal some nutrient medium components effecting growth, luminescence intensity and luciferase synthesis. These agents are nucleic components (nucleotides, nucleosides and amine bases), amino acids and vitamins, which are part of hydrolysates from the biomass of various lithotrophic microorganisms, hydrogen-oxidizing, ironoxidizing and carboxydobacteria. The effect of promoting agents essentially alters the physiological state and ultrastructure of the cells of luminous bacteria and increases luciferase biosynthesis two- to three-fold compared to a control.  相似文献

Life‐history theory predicts trade‐offs in energy allocation between different life‐history traits when resources are limited, i.e. certain traits should be negatively correlated. However, individuals differ in their ability to acquire resources, which can lead to positive correlations between traits at the population level. Here, we investigated the consequences of the allocation in horn growth and body mass on survival in a bovid (Rupicapra rupicapra) with capture‐mark re‐sighting data on 161 females. In female ungulates, body mass often covaries positively with demographic performance and the few studies on horn size suggest that this trait could be a signal of individual quality. Thus, we expected to measure positive correlations between the allocation in these traits and female survival. However, body mass was not correlated to female survival and there was only a negative, though marginal, effect of horn growth. Hence, it seems that the allocation in growth is not an indicator of female quality. Future studies could investigate the importance of growth on female reproduction to evaluate its effect on lifetime reproductive success. Moreover, it is important to confirm in other populations our result that suggests a cost of the allocation in horn growth to better understand the presence of horns in female bovids. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 113 , 516–521.  相似文献

Although forest and savanna biomes predominate in tropics regions, the factors that control their distribution remain unclear. South American savannas occur in regions that are considered warm and humid enough to support forests, indicating that agents other than climate determine the occurrence of one or the other physiognomy. Herbivory, fire and water deficit have been considered environmental filters that limit the forest species encroachment in savanna physiognomies, but the effects of these filters on the capability of these species to recruit from seeds remain poorly understood. In this study we investigated how stress factors characteristic of savanna environments, such as soil desiccation, heat shocks and high temperatures affect the survival and germination of seeds from savanna and forest tree species. We found that desiccation (to 5%) reduced the germination percentage of forest seeds, but had no effect on the germination of savanna seeds. Forest seeds were less tolerant to heat shocks of 140°C and 200°C, and showed lower germination percentage at temperatures of 35 and 40°C, when compared with savanna seeds. Savanna seeds presented longer germination times and higher germination variance than forest seeds, indicating a risk‐spreading germination strategy among savanna species. The low tolerance of forest seeds to desiccation, heat shock and high temperatures may explain the low recruitment of forest trees into savanna physiognomies. Climate change models predict lower soil moisture, higher temperatures and higher fires frequency for South America biomes. Our results suggest that savanna species are likely to be more capable of withstanding the effects of these changes than forest species.  相似文献
