The composition and abundance of macroalgal propagules contained in sea water arriving at intertidal rocky shores was estimated monthly at Pelancura, central Chile, from June to December, 1984. Samples from surface water and from water running off rocky platforms with mixed algal vegetation were cultured in laboratory conditions and examined for development of sporelings. Thirty eight macroalgal entities grew in the cultures, 75% of them with opportunistic life-styles. The total number of sporelings was similar in the surface water of sites separated by 300 m. Marked variability in composition and number of sporelings was, however, observed between samples taken simultaneously at one site and between different months, suggesting patchiness in the dispersal of propagules. Marked differences were established in the ratio run-off water/surface water in the number of sporelings, which could be related to the dispersal shadows of the various taxa. Sporelings of late successional algae showed marked spatial and temporal variations in number. Some taxa of opportunistic algae were characterized by the development of several thousand sporelings per litre of sea water while in others the number of sporelings was two or three orders of magnitude less, suggesting differences in reproductive effort.  相似文献

Any living or non-living surface immersed in seawaterrapidly acquires a bacterial biofilm. For living marineorganisms, biofilm formation can result in the death ofthe host, and thus there is strong evolutionary pressure formarine eukaryotes to evolve mechanisms which inhibit orcontrol the development of biofilms on their surfaces.Some marine eukaryotes are indeed successful incontrolling biofilms on their surfaces, and in manyinstances this control is achieved by the production ofinhibitory chemicals which act at or near the surface ofthe organism. In some cases these natural inhibitors aresimply toxic to bacteria. However, increasingly it appearsthat at least some of these compounds act by interferingspecifically with bacterial characteristics which effect theability of bacteria to colonize their hosts, such asattachment, surface spreading, or the production ofextracellular macromolecules. As an example, theAustralian seaweed Delisea pulchra appears tocontrol bacterial colonization by interfering with abacterial regulatory system (the acylated homoserinelactone system) that regulates several colonizationrelevant bacterial traits. Understanding how marineorganisms control specific bacterial colonization traitsshould provide us with insights into new technologies forthe control of biofilms on artificial surfaces.  相似文献

具有解钾活性的硅酸盐细菌──胶质芽孢杆菌(R.mucilaginesus)W9-12与具有杀虫活性的苏云金芽孢杆菌(B.thuringensis)Bt179208原生质体质进行了融合。W9-12原生质体形成率为99.7%.再生率为24.9%,Bt179208原生质体形成率为99.9%,再生率为35%。以PEG为助融剂进行原生质体融合.得到56个融合子.融合率为5.92×10-6。融合子在双抗选择培养基上连续传代10次,得到12个稳定的融合子,生物测定表明,融合子既具有一定的杀虫活性又具有一定的解钾活性。  相似文献

Biosorption of lead and nickel by biomass of marine algae   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15  
Screening tests of different marine algae biomas types revealed a high passive biosorptive uptake of lead up to 270 mg Pb/g of biomass in some brown marine algae. Members of the order Fucales perfomed particularly well in this descending sequence: Fucus > Ascophyllum > Sargassum. Although decreasing the swelling of wetted biomass particles, their reinforcement by crosslinking may significantly affect the biosorption performance. Lead uptakes up to 370 mg Pb/g were observed in crosslinked Fucus vesiculosus and Ascophyllum nodosum. At low equilibrium residual concentrations of lead in solution, however, ion exchange resin Amberlite IR-120 had a higher lead uptake than the biosorbent materials. Biological invasions threaten biodiversity worldwide. Nonetheless, a unified theory linking disturbance and resistance to invasion through a mechanistic understanding of the changes caused to biodiversity is elusive. Building on different forms of the disturbance‐biodiversity relationship and on the Biotic Resistance Hypothesis (BRH), we constructed conceptual models showing that, according to the main biodiversity mechanism generating invasion resistance (complementary vs. identity effects), disturbance can either promote or hinder invasion. Following the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis (IDH), moderate levels of disturbance (either frequency or intensity) are expected to enhance species richness. This will promote invasion resistance when complementarity is more important than species identity. Negative effects of severe disturbance on invasion resistance, due to reductions in species richness, can be either overcompensated or exacerbated by species identity effects, depending on the life‐traits becoming dominant within the native species pool. Different invasion resistance scenarios are generated when the diversity‐disturbance relationship is negative or positive monotonic. Predictions from these models were experimentally tested on rocky reefs. Macroalgal canopies differing in species richness (1 vs. 2 vs. 3) and identity, were exposed to either a moderate or a severe pulse disturbance. The effects of different canopy‐forming species on the seaweed, Caulerpa cylindracea, varied from positive (Cystoseira crinita) to neutral (Cystoseira barbata) to negative (Cystoseira compressa). After 2 years, severely disturbed plots were monopolized by C. compressa and supported less Ccylindracea. Our study shows that the effects of disturbance on invasion depend upon its intensity, the main mechanism through which biodiversity generates invasion resistance and the life‐traits selected within the native species pool. Disturbance can sustain invasion resistance when promoting the dominance of competitively subordinate species possessing traits that allow outperforming invaders.  相似文献

To assess distributional shifts of species in response to recent warming, historical distribution records are the most requisite information. The surface seawater temperature (SST) of Kochi Prefecture, southwestern Japan on the western North Pacific, has significantly risen, being warmed by the Kuroshio Current. Past distributional records of subtidal canopy‐forming seaweeds (Laminariales and Fucales) exist at about 10‐year intervals from the 1970s, along with detailed SST datasets at several sites along Kochi's >700 km coastline. In order to provide a clear picture of distributional shifts of coastal marine organisms in response to warming SST, we observed the present distribution of seaweeds and analyzed the SST datasets to estimate spatiotemporal SST trends in this coastal region. We present a large increase of 0.3°C/decade in the annual mean SST of this area over the past 40 years. Furthermore, a comparison of the previous and present distributions clearly showed the contraction of temperate species' distributional ranges and expansion of tropical species' distributional ranges in the seaweeds. Although the main temperate kelp Ecklonia (Laminariales) had expanded their distribution during periods of cooler SST, they subsequently declined as the SST warmed. Notably, the warmest SST of the 1997–98 El Niño Southern Oscillation event was the most likely cause of a widespread destruction of the kelp populations; no recovery was found even in the present survey at the formerly habitable sites where warm SSTs have been maintained. Temperate Sargassum spp. (Fucales) that dominated widely in the 1970s also declined in accordance with recent warming SSTs. In contrast, the tropical species, S. ilicifolium, has gradually expanded its distribution to become the most conspicuously dominant among the present observations. Thermal gradients, mainly driven by the warming Kuroshio Current, are presented as an explanation for the successive changes in both temperate and tropical species' distributions.  相似文献

An inositol-containing sphingophospholipid ceramidephosphoinositol (CPI) found for the first time in red macrophytic algae proved to be typical of the Rhodophyta. The CPI content varied among the algal species from trace amounts to 15.7% of the total phospholipids and depended on season. Red seaweeds provide a more convenient source of ceramidephosphoinositol than other organisms.  相似文献

We investigated patterns of genetic structure in two sister kelp species to explore how distribution width along the shore, zonation, latitudinal distribution and historical factors contribute to contrasting patterns of genetic diversity. We implemented a hierarchical sampling scheme to compare patterns of genetic diversity and structure in these two kelp species co‐distributed along the coasts of Brittany (France) using a total of 12 microsatellites, nine for Laminaria hyperborea and 11 for Laminaria digitata, of which eight amplified in both species. The genetic diversity and connectivity of L. hyperborea populations were greater than those of L. digitata populations in accordance with the larger cross‐shore distribution width along the coast and the greater depth occupied by L. hyperborea populations in contrast to L. digitata populations. In addition, marginal populations showed reduced genetic diversity and connectivity, which erased isolation‐by‐distance patterns in both species. As L. digitata encounters its southern range limit in southern Brittany (SBr) while L. hyperborea extends down to mid‐Portugal, it was possible to distinguish the effect of habitat continuity from range edge effects. We found that L. digitata did not harbour high regional diversity at its southern edge, as expected in a typical rear edge, suggesting that refuges from the last glacial maximum for L. digitata were probably not located in SBr, but most likely further north. For both species, the highest levels of genetic diversity were found in the Iroise Sea and Morlaix Bay, the two regions in which they are being currently harvested. Preserving genetic diversity of these two foundation species in these areas should, thus, be a priority for the management of this resource in Brittany.  相似文献

Antimicrobial Browning-Inhibitory Effect of Flavor Compounds in Seaweeds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Since ancient times, the antimicrobial properties of seaweeds have been recognized. However, antimicrobial activities of volatile compounds in seaweeds have not been explored so far. Here, essential oils from seaweeds including green, brown and red algae such as Laminaria japonica, Kjellmaniella crassifolia, Gracilaria verrucosa and Ulva pertusa were prepared by using SDE (simultaneous distillation and extraction) apparatus. Volatile compounds in the essential oils were identified as aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, alcohols and hydrocarbons by comparison of GC-retention times and MS data with those of authentic specimens. Flavor compounds such as (3Z)-hexenal, (2E)-hexenal and (2E)-nonenal in some essential oils showed strong antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli TG-1, and Erwinia carotovora. Inhibition of browning can be achieved during either of two stages, namely, oxidation reaction by tyrosinase or subsequent non-enzymatic polymerization. Tyrosinase activity was measured by monitoring absorbance at 475 nm originating from dopachrome formed from L-DOPA. Many kinds of aliphatic carboxylic acids, aldehydes and alcohols were used as inhibitors for PPO activity. The results indicated that the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds strongly inhibit tyrosinase activity. When seaweeds are damaged or macerated, the α,β-unsaturated aldehydes such as (2E)-hexenal and (2E)-nonenal are biosynthesized via the corresponding (3Z)-unsaturated aldehydes from linolenic acid and arachidonic acid. The flavor compounds that are formed could be valuable as safe antimicrobial browning-inhibitory agents of edible seaweed origin.  相似文献
