Animals are attracted to human food subsidies worldwide. The behavioral response of individuals to these resources is rarely described in detail, beyond chances of encounters. Seabirds for instance scavenge in large numbers at fishing boats, triggering crucial conservation issues, but how the response to boats varies across encounters is poorly known. Here we examine the behavioral response of wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans), equipped with GPS tags, to longline fishing boats operating near their colony for which we had access to vessel monitoring system data. We distinguish between encounters (flying within 30 km of a boat) and attendance behavior (sitting on the sea within 3 km of a boat), and examine factors affecting each. In particular, we test hypotheses that the response to encountered boats should vary with sex and age in this long‐lived dimorphic species. Among the 60% trips that encountered boats at least once, 80% of them contained attendance (but attendance followed only 60% of each single encounter). Birds were more attracted and remained attending longer when boats were hauling lines, despite the measures enforced by this fleet to limit food availability during operations. Sex and age of birds had low influence on the response to boats, except the year when fewer boats came fishing in the area, and younger birds were attending further from boats compared to older birds. Net mass gain of birds was similar across sex and not affected by time spent attending boats. Our results indicate albatrosses extensively attend this fishery, with no clear advantages, questioning impacts on foraging time budgets. Factors responsible for sex foraging segregation at larger scale seem not to operate at this fleet near the colony and are not consistent with predictions of optimal foraging theory on potential individual dominance asymmetries. This approach complements studies of large‐scale overlap of animals with human subsidies.  相似文献

Using oral histories, archival materials, and observations of present behavior, a largely hypothetical historical reconstruction of the natural resource exploitation and subsistence practices of Lese farmers and Efe foragers in the Ituri Forest of northeastern Zaïre is presented. Distinct epochs associated with the advent of forest agriculture, Belgian colonization, and post-independence economic collapse have resulted in changes in local population density, the range of forest resources exploited, and the spatial distribution and intensity of resource use. Broadly speaking, there has been a historical trend toward sedentism, spatial clumping of settlements, localization of resource exploitation, reduced importance of forest carbohydrates in the diet, and an increased reliance on agricultural products. Over time the Efe and Lese exchange system has changed, in relation to the items traded and the relative dependence of each partner on the exchange relationship. Involvement in this alliance has had a considerable impact on Efe settlement pattern, diet, and probably fecundity. It ultimately placed the Lese in a position of power over the Efe, and provided the farmers with means to enter a transient monetary economy. By providing a retrospective on Efe and Lese subsistence, we hope to demonstrate that to decipher the relative benefits and constraints of this contemporary exchange relationship, we must understand their historical etiology.  相似文献

A central question in the conservation and exploitation of nature is the time perspective used in decisions. According to the standard economic theory, decision makers tend to favour immediate benefits at the expense of more distant ones. In this essay, different economic and philosophical arguments for and against this practice are discussed. The conclusion is that although long-term decisions are qualitatively different from normal decisions, the difference cannot be represented in terms of a uniform discount rate. The latter part of the essay discusses the question of how societies can be made less myopic. As we need constitutional restrictions to protect minorities, we may also need similar restrictions to protect the interests of future generations.  相似文献

Sexual selection theory assumes that maximizing fitness is the ultimate goal in every mating decision. Fitness can be maximized directly by increasing the number of offspring (direct benefits) or indirectly by maximizing offspring's lifetime reproductive success (indirect benefits). Whereas there is considerable evidence in the literature for the influence of mating decisions on direct benefits, indirect benefits have been more elusive. Here, we review the variables that influence mating decisions made by females of freshwater fish and how these affect their fitness directly, as well as indirectly. Females enhance their fitness by matching their mating decisions to current environmental conditions, using a wide range of pre- and post-copulation mechanisms that enable them to maximize benefits from mating. Male sexual traits and courtship displays are signals used by females as a way of assessing male quality in terms of both direct and indirect benefits. Polyandry is very common among freshwater fish species, and indirect benefits have been hypothesized as drivers of its predominance. Despite intensive theoretical work, and multiple suggestions of the effects of indirect benefits, to date no study has been able to demonstrate experimentally the existence of indirect benefits in freshwater fish species. Additionally, most studies of direct benefits measure short-term benefits of mating decisions. In both cases, lifetime reproductive success is not assessed. Therefore, we are led to conclude that evidence as to whether female mating decisions result in direct and/or indirect benefits in freshwater fish species is still lacking. These results should be considered in light of the ongoing debate about the significance of indirect benefits in female mating decisions.  相似文献

Lee and Spurrier (1995) present one‐sided and two‐sided confidence interval procedures for making successive comparisons between ordered treatments. Their procedures have important applications for problems where the treatments can be assumed to satisfy a simple ordering, such as for a sequence of increasing dose‐levels of a drug. The two‐sided procedure provides both upper and lower bounds on the differences between successive treatments, whereas the one‐sided procedure only provides lower bounds on these differences. However, the one‐sided procedure allows sharper inferences regarding which treatments can be declared to be better than their previous ones. In this paper we apply the results obtained in Hayter , Miwa , and Liu (2000) to develop a new procedure which combines the good aspects of both the one‐sided and the two‐sided procedures. This new procedure maintains the inferential sensitivity of the one‐sided procedure while also providing both upper and lower bounds on the differences between successive treatments. Some new critical points are needed which are tabulated for the balanced case where the sample sizes are all equal. The application of the new procedure is illustrated with an example.  相似文献

1. Patch-leaving decisions are of utmost importance in determining parasitoid foraging success. Parasitoids are known to use both marks left by hosts (chemical or otherwise) and ovipositions to assess host availability and to decide when to leave a host patch.
2. Previous studies have shown that, depending on the species, ovipositions either increase (an incremental mechanism) or decrease (a decremental mechanism) the patch residence times of parasitoids. Reports in the literature conflict on which mechanism is used by Venturia canescens , a parasitoid of pyralid moth larvae.
3. We hypothesize that, as a consequence of saturation in the capacity of the parasitoid to discriminate between host densities at high host numbers, V. canescens uses a decremental mechanism at low host numbers and an incremental one at high host numbers. We call this a 'switching mechanism'.
4. Our experiments show that even if discrimination capacity saturates, V. canescens uses a decremental mechanism over a wide range of host densities.
5. The distribution of hosts in different fruits species under field conditions suggests a switching mechanism would not evolve in natural situations.
6. A model of patch departure in V. canescens is constructed and tested using an independent set of experiments. The model suggests that the patch leaving mechanism in V. canescens is a stochastic decremental one. As might be expected from Weber's Law, the initial leaving tendency is a convex decreasing function of kairomone concentration. The leaving tendency increases exponentially with the time spent in the patch without ovipositing. Ovipositions cause a sudden increase in leaving tendency.
7. Simulations suggest that a decremental mechanism would be out-competed by either one indifferent to ovipositions or an incremental one, only when travel times are much larger than those that are likely to occur in the field.  相似文献

Neurotrophins, via activation of Trk receptor tyrosine kinases, serve as mitogens, survival factors and regulators of arborization during retinal development. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and TrkB regulate neuronal arborization and survival in late retinal development. However, TrkB is expressed during early retinal development where its functions are unclear. To assess TrkB/BDNF actions in the early chick retina, replication-incompetent retroviruses were utilized to over-express a dominant negative truncated form of TrkB (trunc TrkB), or BDNF and effects were assessed at E15. Clones expressing trunc TrkB were smaller than controls, and proliferation and apoptosis assays suggest that decreased clone size correlated with increased cell death when BDNF/TrkB signaling was impaired. Analysis of clonal composition revealed that trunc TrkB over-expression decreased photoreceptor numbers (41%) and increased cell numbers in the middle third of the inner nuclear layer (INL) (23%). Conversely, BDNF over-expression increased photoreceptor numbers (25%) and decreased INL numbers (17%). Photoreceptors over-expressing trunc TrkB demonstrated no increase in apoptosis nor abnormalities in lamination suggesting that TrkB activation is not required for photoreceptor cell survival or migration. These studies suggest that TrkB signaling regulates commitment to and/or differentiation of photoreceptor cells from retinal progenitor cells, identifying a novel role for TrkB/BDNF in regulating cell fate decisions.  相似文献

The history of environmental decision-making in the United States is primarily one of antagonism, conflict, and litigation. Four sectors of American society are typically at odds over why and how to solve environmental problems—government regulators, businesses proponents, environmental advocates, and members of affected communities. Dissimilar worldviews are at the heart of most environmental disputes, and people in the four sectors tend to have diverse perspectives and philosophies that affect how they interpret and respond to environmental issues. To promote integrated, cost-effective decisions, the public health paradigm (prevention first, intervention second, treatment third), as embodied in the Precautionary Principle and the concept of Sustainable Development, should be mutually adopted as a joint framework for prioritizing solutions to pressing environmental problems. The core public health principle of prevention first is a simple yet powerful tenet that can help foster better environmental choices that are more effective, efficient, and equitable.  相似文献

Females should adjust their mating preferences when the costs of being selective vary. Here, we focus on the cost of laying unfertilized eggs. Oviparous species lose their fertilizable oocytes if remain virgin for too long. Thus, females who are at a high risk of laying infertile eggs should be selected against rejecting a mating opportunity under such circumstances. We test this prediction using the blood-sucking bug Rhodnius prolixus females, which exhibit stereotyped discrimination behaviour to undesired copula. Under laboratory conditions, we compared the copulatory rejection behaviour between females at their first ovarian cycle (12 days old adults, at low risk of ovipositing infertile eggs) and females at their second ovarian cycle (26 days old adults, at high risk of ovipositing infertile eggs). Since R. prolixus female rejection behaviour is mainly exhibited in the presence of potential mates, we also manipulated the presence and absence of additional males. We found that rejection behaviour significantly decreases both when females enter their second ovarian cycle (and are at high risk of losing unfertilized eggs) and under the absence of additional males. We discuss the possible effects of the risk of losing fertilizable eggs on female mating preferences.  相似文献

For marine top predators like seabirds, the oceans represent a multitude of habitats regarding oceanographic conditions and food availability. Worldwide, these marine habitats are being altered by changes in climate and increased anthropogenic impact. This is causing a growing concern on how seabird populations might adapt to these changes. Understanding how seabird populations respond to fluctuating environmental conditions and to what extent behavioral flexibility can buffer variations in food availability can help predict how seabirds may cope with changes in the marine environment. Such knowledge is important to implement proper long‐term conservation measures intended to protect marine predators. We explored behavioral flexibility in choice of foraging habitat of chick‐rearing black‐legged kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla during multiple years. By comparing foraging behavior of individuals from two colonies with large differences in oceanographic conditions and distances to predictable feeding areas at the Norwegian shelf break, we investigated how foraging decisions are related to intrinsic and extrinsic factors. We found that proximity to the shelf break determined which factors drove the decision to forage there. At the colony near the shelf break, time of departure from the colony and wind speed were most important in driving the choice of habitat. At the colony farther from the shelf break, the decision to forage there was driven by adult body condition. Birds furthermore adjusted foraging behavior metrics according to time of the day, weather conditions, body condition, and the age of the chicks. The study shows that kittiwakes have high degree of flexibility in their behavioral response to a variable marine environment, which might help them buffer changes in prey distribution around the colonies. The flexibility is, however, dependent on the availability of foraging habitats near the colony.  相似文献
