Global warming has been implicated in widespread demographic changes in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar populations, but projections of life-history responses to future climate change are lacking. Here, we first exploit multiple decades of climate and biological data from the Burrishoole catchment in the west of Ireland to model statistical relationships between atmospheric variables, water temperature, and freshwater growth of juvenile Atlantic salmon. We then use this information to project potential changes in juvenile growth and life-history scheduling under three shared socioeconomic pathway and representative concentration pathway scenarios from 1961 to 2100, based on an ensemble of five climate models. Historical water temperatures were well predicted with a recurrent neural network, using observation-based atmospheric forcing data. Length-at-age was in turn also well predicted by cumulative growing degree days calculated from these water temperatures. Most juveniles in the Burrishoole population migrated to sea as 2-year-old smolts, but our future projections indicate that the system should start producing a greater proportion of 1-year-old smolts, as increasingly more juveniles cross a size-based threshold in their first summer for smoltification the following spring. Those failing to cross the size-based threshold will instead become 2-year-old smolts, but at a larger length relative to 2-year-old smolts observed currently, owing to greater overall freshwater growth opportunity. These changes in age- and size-at-seaward migration could have cascading effects on age- and size-at-maturity and reproductive output. Consequently, the seemingly small changes that our results demonstrate have the potential to cause significant shifts in population dynamics over the full life cycle. This workflow is highly applicable across the range of the Atlantic salmon, as well as to other anadromous species, as it uses openly accessible climate data and a length-at-age model with minimal input requirements, fostering improved general understanding of phenotypic and demographic responses to climate change and management implications.  相似文献

It is generally assumed that, in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, immature 40S ribosomal subunits are not competent for translation initiation. Here, we show by different approaches that, in wild‐type conditions, a portion of pre‐40S particles (pre‐SSU) associate with translating ribosomal complexes. When cytoplasmic 20S pre‐rRNA processing is impaired, as in Rio1p‐ or Nob1p‐depleted cells, a large part of pre‐SSUs is associated with translating ribosomes complexes. Loading of pre‐40S particles onto mRNAs presumably uses the canonical pathway as translation‐initiation factors interact with 20S pre‐rRNA. However, translation initiation is not required for 40S ribosomal subunit maturation. We also provide evidence suggesting that cytoplasmic 20S pre‐rRNAs that associate with translating complexes are turned over by the no go decay (NGD) pathway, a process known to degrade mRNAs on which ribosomes are stalled. We propose that the cytoplasmic fate of 20S pre‐rRNA is determined by the balance between pre‐SSU processing kinetics and sensing of ribosome‐like particles loaded onto mRNAs by the NGD machinery, which acts as an ultimate ribosome quality check point.  相似文献

豆腐柴叶含有丰富的果胶。文中结合盐酸浸提法的基础上,采用醇氨降酯法提取豆腐柴叶的果胶并检测,提取率为部颁19.5%,pH值为2.9,水分和灰分分别为5.13%和8.67%,半乳糖含量为65%,酯化度为38.5%,所提取的低酯果胶的基本性质与国标检测标准接近。果胶成品经AB-8树脂柱纯化后,所提果胶的成分经硅胶板薄层层析初步测定,果胶多糖成分为葡萄糖,果糖,D-甘露糖3种,果胶的溶解度与温度呈正相关性,pH值对其溶解度影响不大。  相似文献

Animals balance the risk of predation against other vital needs by adjusting their spatial behavior to match spatiotemporal variation in predation risk. To map this ‘landscape of fear’, prey use evolutionary rules of thumbs that are associated with the activity and hunting efficiency of predators. In addition, prey acquire perceptual information about the presence, identity and state of potential predators and use these cues to focus their acute anti‐predatory responses. Our goal was to explore if and how prey also use such perceptual information that decays with time to update their spatiotemporal risk assessment. We placed scorpions in freshly dug burrows and recorded the spatial activity and defense behavior of their isopod prey upon encountering the burrows straight after settling the scorpions and seven days later. To corroborate our understanding, we also examined the isopods’ detailed reactions towards deserted scorpion burrows. The isopods reacted defensively to scorpion burrows during their first encounter. After seven days, proportionally more isopods approached the scorpion burrows on their way out for foraging and fewer isopods encountered it on their way back. No changes in the spatial activity were observed towards deserted burrows. In addition, on the eighth day, more isopods entered the risky area near the scorpion burrows when leaving their own burrow than on the first encounter. The results suggest that isopods used predator cues to readjust the ‘landscape of fear’. Yet, rather than avoiding the dangerous areas altogether, the isopods implemented risky inspection behavior, validating whether the danger is actual. Our findings imply that inspection behavior toward predators can be used for future planning of prey spatial activity, offsetting possible ‘information decay costs’.  相似文献

In recent years, several sensor-based approaches have been established to early detect single plant stresses, but the challenge of discriminating between simultaneously occurring stressors still remains. Earlier studies on wheat plants strongly affected by pathogens and nitrogen deficiency indicated that chlorophyll fluorescence might be suited to distinguish between the two stressors. Nevertheless, there is lack of information on the pre-symptomatic detection of synchronized occurrence of slight N-deficiency and the early stages of pathogen infection. The usefulness of the blue, green, and yellow fluorescence signals in this context has not yet been explored. We hypothesized that differentiation between wheat plants’ physiological reaction due to N-deficiency and leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) as well as N-deficiency and powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici) might be accomplished by means of UV laser-induced fluorescence spectral measurements between 370 and 620 nm in addition to chlorophyll fluorescence (640-800 nm). Plants were provided with either a normal or a modified Hoagland nutrient solution in order to induce a slight N deficit. Pathogen inoculation was carried out on the second fully developed leaf. Four experimental groups were evaluated: (a) N-full-supply [N+]; (b) N-deficiency [N−]; (c) N-full-supply + pathogen [N+/LR] or [N+/PM]; (d) N-deficiency + pathogen [N−/LR] or [N−/PM]. The results revealed that, in addition to the amplitude ratio of R/FR fluorescence, B/G fluorescence also facilitated reliable and robust discrimination among the four experimental groups. The discrimination among the experimental groups was accomplished as early as one and two days after inoculation for powdery mildew and leaf rust infection, respectively. During the 3 days evaluation period, the differences among the treatment groups became more evident. Moreover, several other amplitude ratios and half-bandwidth ratios proved to be suited to early detect fungal infection, irrespective of the nitrogen status of the plant.  相似文献

No-go decay (NGD) and non-stop decay (NSD) are eukaryotic surveillance mechanisms that target mRNAs on which elongation complexes (ECs) are stalled by, for example, stable secondary structures (NGD) or due to the absence of a stop codon (NSD). Two interacting proteins Dom34(yeast)/Pelota(mammals) and Hbs1, which are paralogues of eRF1 and eRF3, are implicated in these processes. Dom34/Hbs1 were shown to promote dissociation of stalled ECs and release of intact peptidyl-tRNA. Using an in vitro reconstitution approach, we investigated the activities of mammalian Pelota/Hbs1 and report that Pelota/Hbs1 also induced dissociation of ECs and release of peptidyl-tRNA, but only in the presence of ABCE1. Whereas Pelota and ABCE1 were essential, Hbs1 had a stimulatory effect. Importantly, ABCE1/Pelota/Hbs1 dissociated ECs containing only a limited number of mRNA nucleotides downstream of the P-site, which suggests that ABCE1/Pelota/Hbs1 would disassemble NSD complexes stalled at the 3'-end, but not pre-cleavage NGD complexes stalled in the middle of mRNA. ABCE1/Pelota/Hbs1 also dissociated vacant 80S ribosomes, which stimulated 48S complex formation, suggesting that Pelota/Hbs1 have an additional role outside of NGD.  相似文献

Lsm1 forms part of a cytoplasmic protein complex, Lsm1-7-Pat1, involved in the degradation of mRNAs. Here, we show that Lsm1 has an important role in promoting genomic stability in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Budding yeast cells lacking Lsm1 are defective in recovery from replication-fork stalling and show DNA damage sensitivity. Here, we identify histone mRNAs as substrates of the Lsm1-7-Pat1 complex in yeast, and show that abnormally high amounts of histones accumulate in lsm1Δ mutant cells. Importantly, we show that the excess of histones is responsible for the lsm1Δ replication-fork instability phenotype, since sensitivity of lsm1Δ cells to drugs that stall replication forks is significantly suppressed by a reduction in histone gene dosage. Our results demonstrate that improper histone stoichiometry leads to genomic instability and highlight the importance of regulating histone mRNA decay in the tight control of histone levels in yeast.  相似文献

1. Ecologists continue to debate whether the assembly of communities of species is more strongly influenced by dispersal limitations or niche‐based factors. Analytical approaches that account for both mechanisms can help to resolve controls of community assembly. 2. We compared littoral snail assemblages in Lake Tanganyika at three different spatial scales (5–25 m, 0.5–10 km and 0.5–27 km) to test whether spatial distance or environmental differences are better predictors of community similarity. 3. At the finest scale (5–25 m), snail assemblages shifted strongly with depth but not across similar lateral distances, indicating a stronger response to environmental gradients than dispersal opportunities. 4. At the two larger scales (0.5–27 km), both environmental similarity and shoreline distance between sites predicted assemblage similarity across sites. Additionally, canonical correspondence analysis revealed that snail abundances were significantly correlated with algal carbon‐to‐nitrogen ratio and wave energy. 5. Our results indicate that the factors governing assemblage structure are scale dependent; niche‐based mechanisms act across all spatial scales, whereas community similarity declines with distance only at larger spatial separations.  相似文献
