We show in this paper that the evolution of cannibalistic consumer populations can be a never ending story involving alternating levels of polymorphism. More precisely, we show that a monomorphic population can evolve toward high levels of cannibalism until it reaches a so-called branching point, where the population splits into two sub-populations characterized by different, but initially very close, cannibalistic traits. Then, the two traits coevolve until the more cannibalistic sub-population undergoes evolutionary extinction. Finally, the remaining population evolves back to the branching point, thus closing an evolutionary cycle. The model on which the study is based is purely deterministic and derived through the adaptive dynamics approach. Evolutionary dynamics are investigated through numerical bifurcation analysis, applied both to the ecological (resident-mutant) model and to the evolutionary model. The general conclusion emerging from this study is that branching-extinction evolutionary cycles can be present in wide ranges of environmental and demographic parameters, so that their detection is of crucial importance when studying evolutionary dynamics. 相似文献

Degradation of ecosystems is ongoing in Latin America but there is also a strong upswing in conservation and restoration efforts. SIACRE – the Ibero‐American and Caribbean Society for Ecological Restoration – is playing a key role in coordinating and promoting this trend at international, national, and subnational levels. In October 2014, SIACRE members organized the first national seminar on ecological restoration in Chile, with participants representing both academic and non‐academic sectors. This seminar served as the catalyst for this essay and was an historic event at the national level. Much work has been underway in the science and practice of restoration in Chile, but until now it has been fragmented. This first national seminar enabled helped the principal strengths and challenges that Chile has and must face in the transdisciplinary domain of ecological restoration. Since 2004, various meetings have been organized in the region, in order to communicate the importance of restoration, especially in Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Brazil, and more recently in Chile and Argentina. Here we trace the history of national and subnational restoration networks in Latin America and the Caribbean, and of SIACRE, and then outline some goals and challenges for the coming years. 相似文献

通过1959~1999年间4次按季节进行的底拖网调查,分析了莱州湾渔业资源和优势种组成以及群落结构的变化。结果表明,1998年平均渔获量大幅度下降,分别仅为1959、1982和1992~1993年的3.3%、7.3%和11.0%;虽然季节间优势种有一定的变动,但鳀鱼、黄鲫、斑鰶和赤鼻稜鳀等小型中上层鱼类自80年代以来已替代了带鱼、小黄鱼成为优势种;渔业资源群落结构也随时间发生了较大的变化,多样性自1959~1982年增加,然后呈下降趋势。
外部的扰动特别是捕捞,在中等强度下会使鱼类多样性增加,但过高的捕捞强度又会使多样性下降。目前莱州湾渔业资源群落结构简单,处于较不平衡状态,群落演替将继续,在外部扰动大幅度降低的情况下,具有较强恢复力的小型中上层种类资源能够很快恢复和增长。 相似文献

Millions of people worldwide are infected with filarial nematodes, responsible for lymphatic filariasis (LF) and other diseases causing chronic disablement. Elimination programs have resulted in a substantial reduction of the rate of infection in certain areas creating a need for improved diagnostic tools to establish robust population surveillance and avoid LF resurgence. Glycans from parasitic helminths are emerging as potential antigens for use in diagnostic assays. However, despite its crucial role in host–parasite interactions, filarial glycosylation is still largely, structurally, and functionally uncharacterized. Therefore, we investigated the glycan repertoire of the filarial nematode Brugia malayi. Glycosphingolipid and N-linked glycans were extracted from several life-stages using enzymatic release and characterized using a combination of MALDI-TOF-MS and glycan sequencing techniques. Next, glycans were purified by HPLC and printed onto microarrays to assess the host anti-glycan antibody response. Comprehensive glycomic analysis of B. malayi revealed the presence of several putative antigenic motifs such as phosphorylcholine and terminal glucuronic acid. Glycan microarray screening showed a recognition of most B. malayi glycans by immunoglobulins from rhesus macaques at different time points after infection, which permitted the characterization of the dynamics of anti-glycan immunoglobulin G and M during the establishment of brugian filariasis. A significant level of IgG binding to the parasite glycans was also detected in infected human plasma, while IgG binding to glycans decreased after anthelmintic treatment. Altogether, our work identifies B. malayi glycan antigens and reveals antibody responses from the host that could be exploited as potential markers for LF. 相似文献

Na+ dependent [3H]glutamine uptake was found in liposomes reconstituted with solubilized rat kidney brush border in the presence of intraliposomal K+. The reconstituted system was optimised with respect to the critical parameters of the cyclic detergent removal procedure, i.e., the detergent used for the solubilization, the protein concentration, the detergent/phospholipid ratio and the number of passages through a single Amberlite column. Time dependent [3H]glutamine accumulation in proteoliposomes occurred only in the presence of external Na+and internal K+. The transporter showed low if there is any tolerance towards the substitution of Na+ or K+ for other cations. Valinomycin strongly stimulated the transport indicating that it is electrogenic. Intraliposomal glutamine had no effect. From the dependence of the transport rate on the Na+ concentration cooperativity index close to 1 was derived, indicating that 1 Na+ should be involved in the cotransport with glutamine. The electrogenicity of the transport originated from the Na+ transport. Optimal rate of 0.1 mM [3H]glutamine uptake was found in the presence of 50 mM intraliposomal K-gluconate. At higher K-gluconate concentrations the transport rate decreased. The activity of the reconstituted transporter was pH dependent with optimal function in the range pH 6.5-7.0. [3H]glutamine (and [3H]leucine) uptake was inhibited by all the neutral but not by the positively or negatively charged amino acids. The sulfhydryl reagents HgCl2, mersalyl, p-hydroxymercuribenzoate and the substrate analogue 2-aminobicyclo[2,2,1]heptane-2-carboxylate strongly inhibited the transporter, whereas the amino acid analogue α-(methylamino)isobutyrate had no effect. The inhibition by mersalyl was protected by the presence of the substrate. On the basis of the Na+ dependence, the electrogenic transport mode and the specificity towards the amino acids, the reconstituted transporter was classified as B°-like. 相似文献
