Introduction
Overweight and obesity are increasing at an alarming rate among older people. This is mainly because this population is predominantly sedentary. The aim of this study was to classify, according to the body mass index (BMI), a group of older active women and to evaluate the different basic physical abilities as a function of this.Material and methods
The BMI and fitness were evaluated in 60 elderly active women (mean age: 66.14 ± 6.59 years) using the 2-minute step test, arm curl test, chair stand test, back scratch test, chair-sit and reach-test, flamenco test, and 8-foot up-and-go test.Results
It was found that 52.23% of the women studied had a normal BMI and 47.76% were slightly overweight. There were no cases of obesity or underweight. Women with normal BMI had better values in all tests than overweight women. Significant differences were found in the flamenco test (P < .05), and 8-foot up-and-go test (P < .01).Conclusions
Older women who usually do physical activity had a normal or slightly overweight BMI. It was also found that women with lower BMI have better resistance, flexibility, balance and strength. 相似文献73.
Over the last decade, approaches to the development of surfaces that perturb settlement and/or adhesion by barnacles have diversified substantially. Although, previously, coatings research focussed almost exclusively on biocidal technologies and low modulus, low surface-free-energy ‘fouling-release’ materials, novel strategies to control surface colonisation are now receiving significant attention. It is timely, therefore, to review the current ‘state of knowledge’ regarding fouling-resistant surface characteristics and their mechanisms of action against settling larvae of barnacles. The role of the barnacle in marine fouling is discussed here in the context of its life cycle and the behavioural ecology of its cypris larva. The temporary and permanent adhesion mechanisms of cyprids are covered in detail and an overview of adult barnacle adhesion is presented. Recent legislation has directed academic research firmly towards environmentally inert marine coatings, so the actions of traditional biocides on barnacles are not described here. Instead, the discussion is restricted to those surface modifications that interfere with settlement-site selection and adhesion of barnacle cypris larvae; specifically, textural engineering of surfaces, development of inert ‘non-fouling’ surfaces and the use of enzymes in antifouling. 相似文献

The control of complex, developmentally regulated loci and partitioning of the genome into active and silent domains is in part accomplished through the activity of DNA-protein complexes termed chromatin insulators. Together, the multiple, well-studied classes of insulators in Drosophila melanogaster appear to be generally functionally conserved. In this review, we discuss recent genomic-scale experiments and attempt to reconcile these newer findings in the context of previously defined insulator characteristics based on classical genetic analyses and transgenic approaches. Finally, we discuss the emerging understanding of mechanisms of chromatin insulator regulation. The aetiology of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) is defined by a diversity of factors, and recent studies suggest that premorbid personality could be a risk factor for BPSD. This study aimed to review studies on the relationship between premorbid personality and BPSD.Studies were identified using PsycInfo, MedLine, and PubMed. The searches combined terms for premorbid personality, dementia and BPSD. Ten studies have been included in this review.Eight out of ten studies show a relationship between premorbid personality and BPSD. Neuroticism is associated with behavioural disturbances and anxiety. Extraversion is associated with wandering. Low agreeableness is associated with affective disturbance and aggression-related behaviours and high agreeableness is associated with wandering. The studies found no congruent results for openness and conscientiousness.In conclusion, premorbid personality may increase the risk of developing BPSD during the course of the disease. Even so, the relationship between personality and BPSD is complex due to multifactorial aetiology. 相似文献

Substrate specificity of Auloporida (Tabulata) from the Ska?y Fm. (Upper Eifelian-Lower Givetian) of the Holy Cross Mts., Poland, has been recognized. Kyrtatrypa sp., a rare species in the formation (under 5%), was the most often encrusted brachiopod (59% of investigated specimens), while the most often occurring brachiopod, Aulacella eifeliensis (de Verneuil) was nearly not encrusted. The majority of encrusted brachiopods were larger than 20 mm, while smaller brachiopods occur abundantly in the Formation. The substrate specificity has been caused mainly by the ornamentation of the host's shell. The position of corallites along the commissure of the brachiopod shell proves that auloporids often encrusted living hosts. The epizoan probably used water currents produced by brachiopod's lophophore impoverishing the host's food composition, their relationship can therefore be described as scramble competition. 相似文献

Streptomyces peucetius var. caesius is an aerobic bacterium that produces doxorubicin as a secondary metabolite. A mixture design was applied for the screening of suitable complex medium components in the cultivation of S. peucetius var. caesius N47, which is an -rhodomycinone-accumulating mutant strain. -Rhodomycinone is a non-glycosylated precursor of doxorubicin. Best growth results were obtained with soy peptone and beef extract. A central composite face-centered (CCF) experimental design was constructed for the investigation of pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) effects on the cultivation growth phase. Another CCF was applied to the production phase to investigate the effects of aeration, pH, temperature and stirring rate on -rhodomycinone production. An increase in cultivation temperature increased both cell growth and glucose consumption rate. Best -rhodomycinone productivities were obtained in temperatures around 30°C. DO control increased all growth phase responses, but aeration in the production phase coupled with pH decrease resulted in rapid -rhodomycinone decay in the medium. In non-aerated production phases a pH change resulted in better productivity than in experiments without pH change. A pH increase with a temperature decrease seemed most beneficial for productivity. This implies that dynamic control strategies in batch production of -rhodomycinone could increase the overall process productivity. 相似文献

We studied, under laboratory conditions, the larval development of a rhizocephalan barnacle Sacculina pilosellaVan Kampen et Boschma, 1925, which parasitizes the kelp crab Pugettia quadridens(de Haan) in Vostok Bay, Sea of Japan. It is shown that at 22–23°C, the whole cycle of larval development takes about 3 days. The larvae of S. pilosellaare lecithotrophic; their development, like in other rhizocephalans, comprises five naupliar instars. Like the larvae of all sacculinids, the nauplii of S. pilosellahave no flotation collar. In their structure, the larvae of S. pilosellaare similar to the nauplii of the typical sacculina, S. carcini(elongated body outline, long furcal branches, and weakly pronounced segmentation of the abdomen). On the other hand, the characteristic outgrowth inbetween the furcal branches that is characteristic of stages IV and V in S. carciniand S. polygeneais absent in the larvae of S. pilosella.The first seta on the antennula of S. pilosellacompletely disappears only at stage IV; however, at stage III, it is already significantly reduced. No morphological differences have been revealed between male and female larvae of S. pilosellaexcept certain size differences. 相似文献
