Complete accounts of the natural products chemistry of Bonnemaisonia nootkana, B. asparagoides, B. hamifera and Trailliella intricata are described. In contrast to the chemistry of the closely related alga Asparagopsis, Bonnemaisonia spp. do not produce halomethanes, but instead an array of C7-C9 halogen-containing ketones, alcohols and carboxylic acids. Biomimetic syntheses of these compounds suggest they are precursors and products of in vivo Favorsky rearrangements.  相似文献

Under far-red (>650 nm) illumination Anacystis nidulans grows poorly and develops a low chlorophyll content. During continued culture over many generations there are increases in growth rate and in the chlorophyll/phycocyanin ratio, usually occurring in concomitant and stepwise fashion. From such selection cultures six clones have been established which differ from the parent in pigment content and show improved growth rate in far-red light. From the evidence at hand the six clones are presumed to be spontaneous mutants selected under the photosynthetically restrictive condition of far-red illumination.  相似文献

Scenedesmus protuberans Fritsch was grown in light-limited continuous cultures with a light-dark cycle, at temperatures of 20° and 28° C. At 20° irradiances of 12 and 38 W m–2 were used, at 28° 38 W m–2.The relationships between growth rate and light uptake rate were of diphasic linear character. With the lower growth rates the relationships were defined with the parameters e , i.e. the specific maintenance rate constant, and c, the true efficiency of light energy conversion into biomass. The e -value was dependent on temperature, the c on irradiance.In cultures, incubated in prolonged darkness, decrease rates of biomass were comparable to the derived e -values.Both diphasic linear relationships between growth rate and light uptake rate and the same order of magnitude of e -values could be derived from literature data on other green algae.  相似文献

Factors influencing the species composition, distribution and abundance of benthic invertebrates were determined in a eutrophic subarctic lake from April 1978 to April 1979. Collections were made at five stations located at depths of 4 to 13 m. The largest populations of up to 5 × 103 animals m–2 were found in the deepest part of the lake. of the 24 species recorded in this area, the chironomidsProcladius denticulatus, Dicrotendipes modestus, Chironomus decorus andGlyptotendipes barbipes were most common. The strong development of benthos in the profundal zone was attributed to a consistently large supply of food and warm (4 °C) winter temperatures on bottom. Slightly smaller populations (up to 4 × 103 animals, m–2), composed of 19–23 species, occurred in shallower water, a reflection of lower (1.5 °C) winter temperatures. In the anoxic northern part of the lake, only 4–8 species were found in low numbers (400–1 000 animals m–2). This was likely due to low (<5% saturation) oxygen levels in water and high organic content (18.5%) of the sediments.  相似文献

Analyses of four years of in situ sulfate uptake by microplankton communities in two,trophically different lakes showed that about 12% of the experiments had dark uptake equal to or higher than uptake at ambient light. Three axenic algal cultures subjected to different light intensities showed that sulfate uptake patterns, relative to primary productivity, vary with species and although sulfate uptake tends to decrease at lower light levels, at or very near darkness, in physiologically active (young) cultures sulfate uptake frequently increases dramatically. The field data, when summarized according to the light received, shows the same trends seen in the axenic cultures. It is concluded that sulfate uptake is only loosely associated with inorganic carbon uptake (primary productivity) and that under some circumstances a low level of light may increase the sulfate uptake rate.  相似文献

A sampling technique for collecting lotic periphyton on sedimentary substrates using a peristaltic pump is described. Quantitative samples of periphyton standing crop and colonization rate are collected by the same procedure. The technique eliminates human disturbance problems associated with floating artificial samplers by establishing permanent sampling sites directly on submerged substances.  相似文献

The results discussed in this paper represent the first seasonal ecological study carried out on the phytoplankton of the Lake of Menteith. All measured nutrients reached maximum levels during the winter, with silicate showing particularly high concentrations (up to 85 µg at Si l–1). During the summer period phosphate, nitrate and silicate showed almost complete exhaustion in surface waters. The lake water was consistently alkaline, never falling below pH 7, while the alkalinity ranged from 20 to 24 mg CaCO3 l–1. Generally, the nutrient status of the main inflow had a rapid effect on the water quality of the lake.The region of the lake under investigation showed no thermal stratification at any period of the year, although continuous thermal gradients were recorded in the winter. The continual circulation of the water mass probably prevented oxygen saturation from falling below 77% even following a large phytoplankton bloom and subsequent decomposition.From an examination of net phytoplankton samples the Lake of Menteith could be described as blue-green or blue-green/diatom in nature. From the quantitative study, large pulses of Melosira, Asterionella and Fragilaria were recorded in the spring. The disappearance of the species appears to be related to silicate limitation. The summer growth of Asterionella may have been promoted by a nitrogen source other than nitrate and nitrite, both of which were reduced to critical levels. This alternative source of combined nitrogen may have been contributed by nitrogen-fixing algae in the lake. Monitoring river periphyton with artificial benthic substrates   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
The objective of this research was to identify the materials and methods necessary to study the attached algal community on a river bottom in deep water. The study site was the Susquehanna River near Falls, Pennsylvania. Artificial substrates of smooth glass, frosted glass, Vermont slate, sandy slate (flagstone) and acrylic plate were placed on the stream bottom in detritus free sample holders by scuba divers. Both monthly and long-term cumulative samples were collected from the plates employing scuba and a Bar-Clamp sampler. River stones (natural substrates) were collected for comparison. Samples were analyzed in a Palmer Cell under a Bausch and Lomb research microscope. Diatoms were the most important colonizers of river stones, with the genera Nitzschia and Navicula most abundant. Highest periphyton densities occurred on natural substrates in winter with a maximum of 2.2 × 104 units/ mm2. Artificial substrates with one month exposure periods accumulated maximum periphyton density from May through October with relatively low densities in winter. Cumulative artificial substrates were most like river stones in patterns of colonization. Effect of Alloxan was studied on a nitrogen-fixing blue-green alga: Westiellopsis prolifica in pure cultures. Concentrations of Alloxan, 10 g to 50 g/ml stimulate the growth of the alga and increase the chlorophyll, carotin and phycocyanin content of the cultures.  相似文献

Extractable glutamine synthetase activity of the cyanobacterium Anabaena cylindrica was reduced by approximately 50% when N2-fixing cultures were treated with 10 mM NH 4 + or were placed in darkness. The deactivated enzyme could be rapidly reactivated (within 5 min) by adding 40 mM 2-mercaptoethanol to the biosynthetic reaction mixture. The enzyme could also be reactivated in vivo by replacing the culture in light or by removing NH 4 + . When the enzyme was deactivated by simultaneously adding NH 4 + and placing the culture in darkness, reactivation occurred on reillumination and removal of NH 4 + . The removal of NH 4 + in darkness did not result in reactivation. On in vitro reactivation of glutamine synthetase from dark or NH 4 + -treated cultures the maximum glutamine synthetase activity observed frequently exceeded that of glutamine synthetase extracted from untreated cultures. Anacystis nidulans showed a similar type of reversible dark deactivation to A. cylindrica but Plectonema boryanum and a Nostoc did not. With A. cylindrica, a direct positive correlation between the size of the intracellular pool of glutamate and biosynthetic glutamine synthetase activity occurred during light/dark shifts, and on treatment with NH 4 + . The changes in activity of glutamine synthetase in A. cylindrica in response to light resemble in some respects the light modulation of enzymes of the oxidative and reductive pentose phosphate pathways noted in cyanobacteria by others.  相似文献
