The seasonal decline in clutch size in birds can be a response to the environmentally conditioned decrease in prospects for offspring or a consequence of a lower physical ability of late‐breeding females. To find out which of the explanations apply in Tree Swallows Tachycineta bicolor, we assessed whether replacement clutch size in this species is affected by an individual female's ability to lay a certain number of eggs. To do this, we measured the decline in clutch size as a function of laying date between first and replacement clutches in individuals that re‐nested following natural failure, and compared this with the rate of decline in clutch size with laying date for Tree Swallows that laid only a single clutch in that season. Additionally, we assessed whether the clutch size and the rate of its seasonal decline varied across years. We accounted for the truncated and under‐dispersed nature of clutch size data by using a Bayesian approach in the analysis. We found little variation in the rate of clutch size decline across years at our breeding site. Accounting for this seasonal decline in clutch size, mean clutch size was similar between single‐time breeding females and those that laid replacement clutches, implying that the number of eggs laid on the second attempt by female Tree Swallows is determined by laying date, rather than by the female's physical ability to produce a clutch of a certain size.  相似文献

跳跃变异是环境变化影响下水文过程发生急剧变化的一种重要表现形式,体现了水文非线性系统对外界干扰的响应.目前研究主要是对序列跳跃变异发生的时间、次数等进行识别和检验,但缺乏对其变异程度进行定量描述和分级,给开展流域环境变化研究及其影响评价带来很大困难.本文选取相关系数作为基础指标,提出了一种理论严密且便于应用的水文序列跳跃变异分级方法,并利用统计试验验证了文中方法对变异点显著性的检验精度,以及跳跃变异分级原理的合理性和分级方法的可靠性.经推导相关系数与跳跃变异相对幅度的关系,选取不同显著水平下的若干典型相关系数值作为分级阈值,将跳跃变异程度划分为无变异、弱变异、中变异、强变异、巨变异5个等级.通过应用于分析我国不同气候区的5个实测水文序列,结合物理成因分析验证了该方法的实用性.  相似文献

Summary Nonstationary electric currents are described which are generated by the Na,K-pump. Flat membrane sheets 0.2–1 m in diameter containing a high density of oriented N,K-ATPase molecules are bound to a planar lipid bilayer acting as a capacitive electrode. In the aqueous phase adjacent to the bound membrane sheets, ATP is released within milliseconds from an inactive, photolabile precursor (caged ATP) by an intense flash of light. After the ATP-concentration jump, transient current and voltage signals can be recorded in the external circuit corresponding to a translocation of positive charge across the pump protein from the cytoplasmic to the extracellular side. These electrical signals which can be suppressed by inhibitors of the Na,K-ATPase require the presence of Na+ but not of K+ in the aqueous medium. The intrinsic pump currentI p (t) can be evaluated from the recorded current signal, using estimated values of the circuit parameters of the compound membrane system.I p (t) exhibits a biphasic behavior with a fast rising period, followed by a slower decline towards a small quasistationary current. The time constant of the rising phase ofI p (t) is found to depend on the rate of photochemical ATP release. Further information on the microscopic orgin of the current transient can be obtained by double-flash experiments and by chymotrypsin modification of the protein. These and other experiments indicate that the observed charge-translocation is associated with early events in the normal transport cycle. After activation by ATP, the pump goes through the first steps of the cycle and then enters a long-lived state from which return to the initial state is slow.  相似文献

The kinetics of the main phase transition in dipalmytoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) vesicles have been investigated using our iodine laser-Tjump technique with fluorescence detection. A set of three fluorescent probes has been used to sense different parts of the bilayer hydrocarbon chain region. The well established membrane probes DPH and TMADPH as well as DPHPC, a labelled DPPC molecule. We report three relaxation signals in the s and ms time range, which are detected with all three probes. The aim of this study is to assess and compare the performance of commonly used hierarchical, partitional (k-means) and Gaussian model-based (Expectation–Maximization algorithm) clustering techniques to appropriately identify subgroup patterns within vertical ground reaction force data, using a continuous waveform analysis. In addition, we also compared the performance across each technique using normalized and non-normalization input scores. Both generated and real data (one hundred and twenty two vertical jumps) were analyzed. The performance of each cluster technique was measured by assessing the ability to explain variances in jump height using a stepwise regression analysis. Only k-means (normalized scores; 82%) and hierarchical clustering (normalized scores; 85%) were able to extend the ability to describe variances in jump height beyond that achieved using the group analysis (i.e. one cluster; 78%). Further, our findings strongly indicate the need to normalize the input data (similarity measure) when clustering. In contrast to the group analysis, the subgroup analysis was able to identify cluster specific phases of variance, which improved the ability to explain variances in jump height, due to the identification of cluster specific predictor variables. Our findings therefore highlight the benefit of performing a subgroup analysis and may explain, at least in part, the contrasting findings between previous studies that used a single group level of analysis.  相似文献

Flight initiation was analysed in the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria L. using conventional and high‐speed video systems. Flight was initiated by three methods: normal jump, free fall and controlled catapult. Parameters evaluated were time from release to wing‐opening, body angle, speed, height gain, wing‐opening, initial wing‐beat frequency. Fastest wing‐opening occurred following a normal jump. A catapult device allowed manipulation of the launching parameters: speed and angles at launching. It appeared that in an artificially catapulted start there was a minimum speed (v > 0.75 m/s) required to initiate flight. However, under free‐fall conditions a mean speed of v = 0.6 m/s at wing‐opening was observed. When the different parameters of the controlled catapult start were equal to those for normal jump then the time to wing‐opening was found to be extended for the catapult launch. However, other parameters were not affected, occasionally even a ‘kick in air’ was observed. The catapult launches indicated that within about three wing‐beat cycles the animals showed active flight, with positive lift and constant or increasing speed, compared to a ballistic trajectory. Our results indicate that a controlled catapult device will prove useful to the study of sensory and central processes underlying free flight initiation.  相似文献

The kinetics of interfacial proton transfer reaction is an important factor in proton transport across membranes. The following experimental system was designed in order to measure this kinetics. Sonicated liposomes having the protonophore SF6847 was suspended in Tris buffer. Application of a temperature jump (in ∼ 3 μs) caused a drop in the aqueous phase pH which was subsequently sensed by the membrane-bound SF6847. The kinetics of this interfacial proton transfer reaction was monitored on μs timescales. The estimated bimolecular rate constant of 2×1011 M−1 s#x2212;1 for this process show that there is no kinetic barrier for the transfer of protons from the aqueous phase to the membrane-water interface.  相似文献

Autotomy is the ability to spontaneously self‐amputate a limb or other appendage, often as a reflexive action. This limb amputation typically occurs as a specialized defensive response to an attack from a predator and thereby enables the prey to escape from predation. Despite the benefits of escape, autotomized organisms lose the body part and its associated function. Here, we investigated the jumping behavior and performance of one‐leg‐autotomized and intact rice grasshoppers, Oxya yezoensis, to examine changes in jumping behavior after autotomy. The take‐off elevation of autotomized grasshoppers was 7.8° lower than in intact grasshoppers, resulting in nearly a 45° angle of take‐off, which maximized the jumping distance. Kinematic analyses of the jumping manner revealed that the angle of the femur during jumping differed between intact and autotomized grasshoppers, suggesting that the grasshoppers behaviorally change the take‐off elevation after autotomy. According to analyses of jumping performance, the degree of decline in performance differed between horizontal distance and vertical height. Even though they jumped on only one hind leg, one‐leg‐autotomized grasshoppers realized 69% performance along a horizontal distance relative to intact grasshoppers. In contrast, autotomized grasshoppers realized only a 44% performance in vertical height compared to intact grasshoppers. The difference in take‐off elevation between autotomized and intact grasshoppers is likely related to the observed difference in the magnitude of the decline in performance between horizontal distance and vertical height. These results suggest that rice grasshoppers may alter their take‐off elevation after limb autotomy to minimize the reduction in jumping distance.  相似文献

The relaxation kinetics of aqueous lipid dispersions after a pressure jump (p-jump) were investigated using time-resolved FTIR spectroscopy. The methylene stretching vibrational band and the carbonyl band were analyzed to detect changes in conformational order of the hydrocarbon chains and to follow the degree of hydration of the head group, respectively. The kinetics of the transition was found to consist of multiple processes with relaxation constants from seconds down to milliseconds. Faster processes are also present, but could not be resolved by our instrument. This is the first investigation showing directly the time resolved change in chain order in lipid bilayers induced by a p-jump. The results obtained with this IR detection method support previous results that the change in chain order after a perturbation is a multi-step process with the initial molecular events occurring with time constants shorter than milliseconds.  相似文献

Barrier-free downhill folding has been proposed for the peripheral subunit-binding domain BBL. To date, ultrafast kinetic experiments on BBL, which are crucial for a mechanistic understanding of folding, have been hampered by the lack of good intrinsic spectroscopic probes. Here, we present a detailed kinetic characterization of three single-point tryptophan mutants of BBL that have suitable fluorescence properties for following microsecond and nanosecond folding kinetics using temperature jump fluorescence spectroscopy. Experiments were performed at pH 7, which is optimal for stability and minimizes complications that arise from the presence of an alternative native-state conformation of BBL at lower pH. We examined the dependence of rate and equilibrium constants on concentration of denaturant and found that they follow well-established laws allowing kinetic transients to be related to events in folding and compared with equilibrium data. Logarithms of rate constants versus denaturant concentration yielded plots (chevrons) that are characteristic of barrier-limited folding for all mutants investigated, including a truncated sequence that was previously used in the proposal of downhill folding. The thermodynamic quantities calculated from the rate constants were in excellent agreement with those directly determined from equilibrium denaturation based on empirical two-state equations. We found that sequence truncation of BBL as used in studies proposing downhill folding leads to a large loss in helical content and protein stability, which were exacerbated at the low pH used in those studies.
