Effects of extreme,fluctuating temperature events on life history traits of the grain aphid,Sitobion avenae 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Altered temperatures affect insects’ life history traits, such as development period and fecundity, which ultimately determine population growth rates. Understanding insects’ thermal biology is therefore integral to population forecasting and pest management decision‐making such as when to utilise crop spraying or biological control. Aphids are important crop pests in temperate regions, causing considerable yield losses. The aphid thermal‐biology literature is, however, heavily biased towards the effects of rising mean temperatures, whereas the effects of fluctuating, extreme climatic events (e.g., heat waves and sub‐zero cold periods) are largely overlooked. This study assessed the effects of laboratory‐simulated heat waves and sub‐zero cold periods on the survival, development period, and fecundity of the grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Microsiphini), in addition to assessing maternal effects on the birth weight and development period of the offspring of exposed individuals. Exposure to heat stress periods (total of 16 h at 30 °C) significantly reduced aphid fecundity and increased physiological development period (in day‐degrees) resulting in a reduced population growth rate. Cold exposure (total of 1.33 h at ?15 °C) reduced population growth rate due to an elongated development period (in days), but did not affect fecundity or physiological development period (in day‐degrees). Both cold and heat stress significantly reduced aphid survival. Maternal experience of heat stress reduced nymphal birth weight although nymphal development period was not affected by either cold or heat stress. The results suggest that including the effects of fluctuating, extreme temperature events on aphid life history in population forecast models is likely to be of great importance to pest management decision‐making. The demonstration of maternal effects on birth weight also suggests that cross‐generational effects of heat waves on population growth rates could occur. 相似文献

Identification of alleles towards the selection for improved seedling vigour is a key objective of many wheat breeding programmes. A multiparent advanced generation intercross (MAGIC) population developed from four commercial spring wheat cultivars (cvv. Baxter, Chara, Westonia and Yitpi) and containing ca. 1000 F2‐derived, F6:7 RILs was assessed at two contrasting soil temperatures (12 and 20 °C) for shoot length and coleoptile characteristics length and thickness. Narrow‐sense heritabilities were high for coleoptile and shoot length (h2 = 0.68–0.70), indicating a strong genetic basis for the differences among progeny. Genotypic variation was large, and distributions of genotype means were approximately Gaussian with evidence for transgressive segregation for all traits. A number of significant QTL were identified for all early growth traits, and these were commonly repeatable across the different soil temperatures. The largest negative effects on coleoptile lengths were associated with Rht‐B1b (?8.2%) and Rht‐D1b (?10.9%) dwarfing genes varying in the population. Reduction in coleoptile length with either gene was particularly large at the warmer soil temperature. Other large QTL for coleoptile length were identified on chromosomes 1A, 2B, 4A, 5A and 6B, but these were relatively smaller than allelic effects at the Rht‐B1 and Rht‐D1 loci. A large coleoptile length effect allele (a = 5.3 mm at 12 °C) was identified on chromosome 1AS despite the relatively shorter coleoptile length of the donor Yitpi. Strong, positive genetic correlations for coleoptile and shoot lengths (rg = 0.85–0.90) support the co‐location of QTL for these traits and suggest a common physiological basis for both. The multiparent population has enabled the identification of promising shoot and coleoptile QTL despite the potential for the confounding of large effect dwarfing gene alleles present in the commercial parents. The incidence of these alleles in commercial wheat breeding programmes should facilitate their ready implementation in selection of varieties with improved establishment and early growth. 相似文献

Odorant‐binding proteins (OBPs) are soluble proteins mediating chemoreception in insects. In previous research, we investigated the molecular mechanisms adopted by aphids to detect the alarm pheromone (E)‐β‐farnesene and we found that the recognition of this and structurally related molecules is mediated by OBP3 and OBP7. Here, we show the differential expression patterns of 5 selected OBPs (OBP1, OBP3, OBP6, OBP7, OBP8) obtained performing quantitative RT‐PCR and immunolocalization experiments in different body parts of adults and in the 5 developmental instars, including winged and unwinged morphs, of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. The results provide an overall picture that allows us to speculate on the relationship between the differential expression of OBPs and their putative function. The expression of OBP3, OBP6, and OBP7 in the antennal sensilla suggests a chemosensory function for these proteins, whereas the constant expression level of OBP8 in all instars could suggest a conserved role. Moreover, OBP1 and OBP3 are also expressed in nonsensory organs. A light and scanning electron microscopy study of sensilla on different body parts of aphid, in particular antennae, legs, mouthparts, and cornicles‐cauda, completes this research providing a guide to facilitate the mapping of OBP expression profiles. 相似文献

Crop plant compensation for herbivory and the population dynamics of herbivores are two key elements in defining an herbivore's pest status. We studied the dynamics of natural, unmanipulated populations of the aphid Aphis gossypii on seedling plantings of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum and Gossypium barbadense, over a 4-year period in California's Central Valley. Aphid populations colonized all plantings, but reached densities in excess of 0.5 aphids/leaf during only one year (1991), when outbreaks occurred. Outbreak populations were, however, ephemeral; predation and parasitism suppressed aphid populations prior to the initiation of flower bud production, when cotton plant growth may become photosynthate-limited. Effective natural biological control was observed despite the action of hyperparasitoids and the heavy mortality of immature parasitoids that occurred when predators consumed parasitized aphids.We conducted manipulative experiments during 1991 and 1992 to quantify the ability of pre-reproductive G. hirsutum to compensate for aphid herbivory. In 1991 aphid populations in the high-damage treatment reached densities as high as any observed naturally during the past 37 years. Damage symptoms were severe: leaf area was reduced by up to 58% and total above-ground plant biomass was reduced by 45%. By the time of crop harvest, however, plants had compensated fully for the early damage in each of the three traits that define cotton's economic value: the timing of crop maturation, the yield of cotton fiber, and the quality of cotton fiber. Aphid feeding damage did, however, produce some changes in plant architecture that persisted throughout the growing season, including a decrease in the number of vegetative branches. In 1992 aphid populations and associated damage were much lighter, but the qualitative responses to herbivory were consistent with those observed in 1991. Plant compensation for early damage was complete for economically significant measures, and vegetative branch production was again suppressed in mature cotton plants. There was no evidence for a change in the suitability of G. hirsutum as a host plant for A. gossypii as a result of early damage (induced resistance).We conclude that pre-reproductive G. hirsutum, which has not yet begun strong allocations to reproductive structures or established architectural complexity, has retained effective means of compensating for herbivory. In contrast to other systems exhibiting strong compensation, G. hirsutum appears to compensate in part by enhancing apical dominance. Andropogon gayanus (gamba grass) is an introduced pasture grass that threatens Australia's tropical savannas by modifying fire regimes and species composition. To understand the establishment requirements of A. gayanus, we undertook a field experiment to determine the effect of canopy cover and ground layer disturbance on seedling emergence and survival. Seed was sown under three canopy treatments (undisturbed, artificial canopy gap, and natural canopy gap) and under three ground layer treatments (Control, Vegetation disturbed, and Soil disturbed). Results have shown that A. gayanus can establish and survive regardless of canopy cover or ground disturbance, although such site disturbances will increase establishment success. Disturbance of both the overstorey canopy and the ground layer increased A. gayanus emergence, whereas seedling survival to 12 mo after seed sowing was affected by ground layer disturbance alone. Disturbance of the canopy increased light transmission, which may have promoted germination. Ground layer disturbance may also have increased light transmission and suitable sites for establishment, and reduced competition for resources, such as water and nutrients. The ability of A. gayanus to spread along disturbed areas, establish in relatively undisturbed savannas, and resprout after fire within 6 mo after seedling emergence suggests that this species will become increasingly widespread in Australia's tropical savannas. SSRs(Simple sequence repeats)是一类广泛存在于动植物基因组的DNA短串联重复序列,是重要的基因组分子标记。比较不同基因组同源SSR的差异,有利于了解相近物种间的进化过程。文章使用雷蒙德氏棉基因组(D5)、亚洲棉基因组(A2)全基因组序列和陆地棉(AD1)的限制性酶切基因组测序数据,进行全基因组SSR扫描,比较了A组和D组的SSR分布情况,通过识别3个基因组之间的同源SSR,比较它们之间同源SSR重复序列的差异。结果发现,A组和D组同源SSR的分布规律非常相似,但A组与AD组的同源SSR保守性比D组与AD组同源SSR的保守性强。与AD组同源SSR相比,A组中重复序列长度增长的SSR数量约为长度缩短的SSR数量的5倍,在D组中这一比值约为3倍。可以推测,四倍体AD组在与A组、D组的平行进化过程中,由于基因组融合,导致SSR的重复序列长度变化速率与二倍体A、D组有差异,同时这种差异可能导致了AD组SSR重复序列长度在进化过程中与二倍体相比有变短的趋势。文章首次对3个棉花基因组的同源SSR进行了系统地比较,发现了同源SSR在棉属四倍体基因组和二倍体基因组中的显著差异,为进一步揭示棉属基因组的进化规律提供了基础。 相似文献

Summary We have sequenced cDNA clones representing each of the three distinct groups of storage proteins of the cotton seed. Characteristics of their mRNAs and derived proteins are given. Dot matrix analysis of the nucleotide and amino acid sequences shows that 2 of these groups of proteins have a great deal of vestigial homology at low stringency and should be considered subfamilies of a single storage protein gene family. The remaining group is quite distinct and should be considered a separate multigene family. It also can be divived into 2 subfamilies based on the presence or absence of glycosyl residues and other sequence differences.These proteins are processed to smaller species during embryogenesis, and all of the mature storage proteins of cotton can be traced back to these 2 gene families.In view of these relationships we propose that these 2 families be called the and globulins of cotton storage proteins, each comprised of an A and B subfamily. 相似文献

A field trial was performed on a hop yard throughout 2006, 2007 and 2008 in order to analyze the within‐plant distribution of Phorodon humuli (Schrank) and its natural enemies. The aphid population was higher on the leaves of the middle section of the main stem. Specifically, the population was significantly higher at 2 and 3.25 m than at 6 m during the three years. Natural enemies consisted of aphidophagous predators of which Coccinella septempunctata was recorded in the highest number. Its number was greater where the aphid population was higher, with a significantly higher number of eggs, larvae and adults at 2 and 3.25 m than at 6 m. Lacewing eggs were also frequently observed, with a significantly higher population where the number of aphids was higher. The number of winged aphids was higher at 3.25 m than at 2 m within a plant. Understanding hop aphid distribution within the hop canopy is important in developing sampling programs, in evaluating injury and helps the development of sustainable management practices. 相似文献
