Using corrosion casting, we demonstrate and describe a new vascular system--the vertebral venous plexus--in eight snake species representing three families. The plexus consists of a network of spinal veins coursing within and around the vertebral column and was previously documented only in mammals. The spinal veins of snakes originate anteriorly from the posterior cerebral veins and form a lozenge-shaped plexus that extends to the tip of the tail. Numerous anastomoses connect the plexus with the caval and portal veins along the length of the vertebral column. We also reveal a posture-induced differential flow between the plexus and the jugular veins in two snake species with arboreal proclivities. When these snakes are horizontal, the jugulars are observed fluoroscopically to be the primary route for cephalic drainage and the plexus is inactive. However, head-up tilting induces partial jugular collapse and shunting of cephalic efflux into the plexus. This postural discrepancy is caused by structural differences in the two venous systems. The compliant jugular veins are incapable of sustaining the negative intraluminal pressures induced by upright posture. The plexus, however, with the structural support of the surrounding bone, remains patent and provides a low-pressure route for venous return. Interactions with the cerebrospinal fluid both allow and enhance the role of the plexus, driving perfusion and compensating for a posture-induced drop in arterial pressure. The vertebral venous plexus is thus an important and overlooked element in the maintenance of cerebral blood supply in climbing snakes and other upright animals.  相似文献

The present study enlightens the role of Bacillus cereus ACE4 on biodegradation of commercial corrosion inhibitors (CCI) and the corrosion process on API 5LX steel. Bacillus cereus ACE4, a dominant facultative aerobic species was identified by 16S rDNA sequence analysis, which was isolated from the corrosion products of refined diesel-transporting pipeline in North West India. The effect of CCI on the growth of bacterium and its corrosion inhibition efficiency were investigated. Corrosion inhibition efficiency was studied by rotating cage test and the nature of biodegradation of corrosion inhibitors was also analyzed. This isolate has the capacity to degrade the aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbon present in the corrosion inhibitors. The degraded products of corrosion inhibitors and bacterial activity determine the electrochemical behavior of API 5LX steel.  相似文献

Understanding microbial inhibition of corrosion. A comprehensive overview   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Microorganisms are able to drastically change the electrochemical conditions at the metal/solution interface by biofilm formation. These changes can range from the induction or acceleration of corrosion to corrosion inhibition. Any inhibitory action developed by bacteria may be accomplished within the varied and complex biofilm/corrosion products interactions occurring on a biofouled metal surface.Biocorrosion and its counter process, microbial inhibition of corrosion, are rarely linked to a single mechanism or to a single species of microorganisms. Microorganisms can induce corrosion inhibition according to two general mechanisms or their combination: i) neutralizing the action of corrosive substances present in the environment; ii) forming protective films or stabilizing pre-existing protective films on a metal. Different practical cases illustrating these mechanisms are presented in this overview. It must be stressed that some times the inhibitory action of bacteria can be reversed to a corrosive action in bacterial consortia located within biofilm thickness.  相似文献

To investigate if corrosion inhibition by aerobic biofilms is a general phenomenon, carbon steel (SAE 1018) coupons were exposed to a complex liquid medium (Luria–Bertani) and seawater-mimicking medium (VNSS) containing fifteen different pure-culture bacterial suspensions representing seven genera. Compared to sterile controls, the mass loss in the presence of these bacteria (which are capable of developing a biofilm to various degrees) decreased by 2- to 15-fold. The extent of corrosion inhibition in LB medium depended on the nature of the biofilm: an increased proportion of live cells, observed with confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM) and image analysis, decreased corrosion. Corrosion inhibition in LB medium was greatest with Pseudomonas putida (good biofilm formation), while metal coupons exposed to Streptomyces lividans in LB medium (poor biofilm formation) corroded in a manner similar to the sterile controls. Pseudomonas mendocina KR1 reduced corrosion the most in VNSS. It appears that only a small layer of active, respiring cells is required to inhibit corrosion, and the corrosion inhibition observed is due to the attached biofilm. Mammalian embryos have an intimate relationship with their mothers, particularly with the placental vasculature from which embryos obtain nutrients essential for growth. It is an interesting vascular bed because maternal vessel number and diameter change dramatically during gestation and, in rodents and primates, the terminal blood space becomes lined by placental trophoblast cells rather than endothelial cells. Molecular genetic studies in mice aimed at identifying potential regulators of these processes have been hampered by lack of understanding of the anatomy of the vascular spaces in the placenta and the general nature of maternal-fetal vascular interactions. To address this problem, we examined the anatomy of the mouse placenta by preparing plastic vascular casts and serial histological sections of implantation sites from embryonic day (E) 10.5 to term. We found that each radial artery carrying maternal blood into the uterus branched into 5-10 dilated spiral arteries located within the metrial triangle, populated by uterine natural killer (uNK) cells, and the decidua basalis. The endothelial-lined spiral arteries converged together at the trophoblast giant cell layer and emptied into a few straight, trophoblast-lined "canals" that carried maternal blood to the base of the placenta. Maternal blood then percolated back through the intervillous space of the labyrinth toward the maternal side of the placenta in a direction that is countercurrent to the direction of the fetal capillary blood flow. Trophoblast cells were found invading the uterus in two patterns. Large cells that expressed the trophoblast giant cell-specific gene Plf (encoding Proliferin) invaded during the early postimplantation period in a pattern tightly associated with spiral arteries. These peri/endovascular trophoblast were detected only approximately 150-300 microm upstream of the main giant cell layer. A second type of widespread interstitial invasion in the decidua basalis by glycogen trophoblast cells was detected after E12.5. These cells did not express Plf, but rather expressed the spongiotrophoblast-specific gene Tpbp. Dilation of the spiral arteries was obvious between E10.5 and E14.5 and was associated with a lack of elastic lamina and smooth muscle cells. These features were apparent even in the metrial triangle, a site far away from the invading trophoblast cells. By contrast, the transition from endothelium-lined artery to trophoblast-lined (hemochorial) blood space was associated with trophoblast giant cells. Moreover, the shaping of the maternal blood spaces within the labyrinth was dependent on chorioallantoic morphogenesis and therefore disrupted in Gcm1 mutants. These studies provide important insights into how the fetoplacental unit interacts with the maternal intrauterine vascular system during pregnancy in mice.  相似文献

In this article we describe a field study of biofouling and microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of admiralty brass heat exchanger tubes in contact with running fresh water on the river Tagus close to Almaraz nuclear power plant in Spain. Dezincification originated by biofouling and MIC was studied using impedance, polarization resistance, gravimetric, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. Close correlation was observed between the biofilms formed and the corrosion process (dezincification) using the different experimental techniques. Impedance data showed a capacitive behavior including two time constants. Kramers-Kronig (KK) transforms were used to validate impedance data. The admiralty tubes' impedance data satisfied the KK relations.  相似文献

Maritime hydraulic components are often exposed to harsh environmental conditions which can lead to accelerated deterioration, reduced function, equipment failure and costly repair. Two leading causes of maritime hydraulic failure are biofouling accumulation and corrosion. This study examined the antifouling performance of three candidate replacement high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coatings relative to the performance of the current baseline air plasma spray (APS) ceramic coating for protection of hydraulic actuators. Following 20 weeks immersion at tropical and temperate field exposure sites, the control APS ceramic accumulated significantly greater levels of biofouling compared to the HVOF coatings. More specifically, the magnitude of growth of real-world nuisance hard fouling observed on in-service hydraulic components (eg calcareous tubeworms and encrusting bryozoans) was significantly greater on the APS ceramic relative to HVOF coatings. Possible explanations for the observed patterns include differences in surface topography and roughness, the electrochemical potential of the surfaces and the colour/brightness of the coatings.  相似文献

In the context of a geological disposal of radioactive waste in clayey formations, the consequences of microbial activity are of concern regarding the corrosion of metallic components. The purpose of the present work was to characterize the microbial diversity that may have impacted corrosion processes at the interface between re-compacted argillite and steel coupons after 10 years of interaction inside the Toarcian argillite layer in Tournemire (France) under in situ conditions. Several types of steel coupons were introduced in 1999 in two boreholes (so-called CR6 and CR8) drilled in the geological formation and filled with re-compacted argillite. CR6 borehole was drilled horizontally from a century-old railway tunnel and coupons were placed in the undisturbed argillite. CR8 borehole was drilled vertically under the tunnel, in conditions influenced by the draining of the Cernon fault water. CR6 and CR8 boreholes were overcored 10 years later and steel coupons as well as re-compacted argillite samples were analyzed separately. The characterization of their microbial diversity was carried out using culture media and molecular methods using 16S rRNA genes cloning. Data resulting from both approaches were complementary. Isolates and clone sequences were affiliated to only 3 bacterial phyla: Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. The biodiversities differed depending on the steel type and the borehole considered, indicating the influence of both iron-clay interactions and in situ environmental conditions. This analysis has highlighted the presence of sulphate-reducing bacteria, iron-reducing bacteria and isolates capable to develop at high temperatures. These microorganisms can grow at the interfaces between materials in a very short period of time compared with planned durations of disposal. Thus, these results should be considered to assess the consequences of microbial activities on the evolution of the metallic components like overpacks.  相似文献

Heterotrophic bacterial biomass and growth rates were examined in stromatolites formed from four different types of benthic cyanobacterial mats. Bacteria in algal mats were counted using direct microscopy and biomass was estimated from the numbers of bacteria. Heterotrophic bacterial growth rates were estimated from the rate of incorporation of tritiated thy‐midine into DNA. Pustular mat, which occurs in the upper in‐tertidal zone, contained relatively few bacteria in the surface layers (0–5 mm), having about 0.2 x 106 cells mm‐3, or 20 mgC m‐2 per millimetre depth. Other mats in the lower intertidal and subtidal zones had from 1 x 106 cells mm‐3 to 8 x 106 cells mm‐3. Heterotrophic bacterial productivities were 2.1 to 5.0 mgC m‐2 h‐1. Turnover times were an average of 1 day in the sandy sediment and 5 days in the colloform mat. Although these results are minimum estimates, they indicate that heterotrophic bacteria contribute substantially to the carbon cycle in stromatolites, by utilizing about 20 to 30% of primary production.  相似文献

Bacteria are attracted to surfaces. Their surface adhesion, with subsequent binary fission and exopolymer production, leads to the formation of biofilms. Such biofilms consist of bacterial cells in a matrix of their own exopolysaccharide glycocalyces. In addition to the bulk fluid and the surface, biofilms constitute a third physical phase. The close proximity of the bacterial cells in the biofilm matrices assists the formation of metabolically dependent consortia. The chemical and physical activities of these microbial communities produces a heterogeneous system at the colonised surface. Metabolites, produced at specific points on the surface, can lead to the development of effective anodes and cathodes at adjoining locations on the surface. In this way the fouling of a surface by bacterial biofilm development facilitates focal attack on that surface. This pit formation is characteristic of bacterial surface activities as diverse as dental decay and metal corrosion. In this review, we examine bacterial adhesion, biofilm formation and several instances of focal bacterial attack on colonised surfaces. However, pathogenic biofilms and the fouling of biological surfaces, with the exception of caries formation, is outside the scope of this paper.  相似文献
