Selective brain cooling (SBC) of varying strengths has been demonstrated in a number of mammals and appears to play a role in systemic thermoregulation. Although primates lack obvious specialization for SBC, the possibility of brain cooling in humans has been debated for many years. This paper reports on the use of mathematical modeling to explore whether surface cooling can control effectively the temperature of the human cerebrum. The brain was modeled as a hemisphere with a volume of 1.33 1 and overlying layers of cerebrospinal fluid, skull, and scalp. Each component was assigned appropriate dimensions, physical properties and physiological characteristics that were determined from the literature. The effects of blood flow and of thermal conduction were modeled using the steady-state form of the bio-heat equation. Input parameters included core (arterial) temperature: normal (37°C) or hyperthermic (40°C), air temperature: warm (30°C) or hot (40°C), and sweat evaporation rate: 0, 0.25, or 0.50 l · m−2 · h−1. The resulting skin temperatures of the model ranged from 31.8°C to 40.2°C, values which are consistent with data obtained from the literature. Cerebral temperatures were generally insensitive to surface conditions (air temperature and evaporation rate), which affected only the most superficial level of the cerebrum (≤1.5 mm) The remaining parenchymal temperatures were 0.2–0.3°C above arterial temperatures, regardless of surface conditions. This held true even for the worst-case conditions combining core hyperthermia in a hot environment with zero evaporative cooling. Modeling showed that the low surface-to-volume ratio, low tissue conductivity, and high rate of cerebral perfusion combine to minimize the potential impact of surface cooling, whether by transcranial venous flow or by conduction through intervening layers to the skin or mucosal surfaces. The dense capillary network in the brain assures that its temperature closely follows arterial temperature and is controlled through systemic thermoregulation independent of head surface temperature. A review of the literature reveals several independent lines of evidence which support these findings and indicate the absence of functionally significant transcranial venous flow in either direction. Given the fact that humans sometimes work under conditions which produce face and scalp temperatures that are above core temperature, a transcranial thermal link would not necessarily protect the brain, but might instead increase its vulnerability to environmentally induced thermal injury. In this decade, the demands of energy saving and diverse personal thermoregulation requirements along with the emergence of wearable electronics and smart textiles give rise to the resurgence of personal thermal management (PTM) technologies. PTM, including personal cooling, heating, insulation, and thermoregulation, are far more flexible and extensive than the traditional air/liquid cooling garments for the human body. Concomitantly, many new advanced materials and strategies have emerged in this decade, promoting the thermoregulation performance and the wearing comfort of PTM simultaneously. In this review, an overview is presented of the state‐of‐the‐art and the prospects in this burgeoning field. The emerging materials and strategies of PTM are introduced, and classed by their thermal functions. The concept of infrared‐transparent visible‐opaque fabric (ITVOF) is first highlighted, as it triggers the work on advanced PTM by combining it with radiative cooling, and the corresponding implementations and realizations are subsequently introduced, followed by wearable heaters, flexible thermoelectric devices, and sweat‐management Janus textiles. Finally, critical considerations on the challenges and opportunities of PTM are presented and future directions are identified, including thermally conductive polymers and fibers, physiological/psychological statistical analysis, and smart PTM strategies.  相似文献

Thermoregulation is critical to the survival of animals. Tropical environments can be particularly thermally challenging as they reach very high, even lethal, temperatures. The thermoregulatory responses of tropical freshwater turtles to these challenges are poorly known. One common thermoregulatory behaviour is diurnal basking, which, for many species, facilitates heat gain. Recently, however, a north-eastern Australian population of Krefft's river turtles (Emydura macquarii krefftii) has been observed basking nocturnally, possibly to allow cooling. To test this, we determined the thermal preference (central 50% of temperatures selected) of E. m. krefftii in an aquatic thermal gradient in the laboratory. We then conducted a manipulative experiment to test the effects of water temperatures, both lower and higher than preferred temperature, on diurnal and nocturnal basking. The preferred temperature range fell between 25.3°C (±SD: 1.5) and 27.6°C (±1.4) during the day, and 25.3°C (±2.4) and 26.8°C (±2.5) at night. Based on this, we exposed turtles to three 24 h water temperature treatments (‘cool’ [23°C], ‘preferred’ [26°C] and ‘warm’ [29°C]) while air temperature remained constant at 26°C. Turtles basked more frequently and for longer periods during both the day and night when water temperatures were above their preferred range (the ‘warm’ treatment). This population frequently encounters aquatic temperatures above the preferred thermal range, and our results support the hypothesis that nocturnal basking is a mechanism for escaping unfavourably warm water. Targeted field studies would be a valuable next step in understanding the seasonal scope of this behaviour in a natural environment.  相似文献

Three desert perennials from the Wahiba Sands, Oman were studied for their ability to withstrand high air temperatures combined with low water availability. Plants were also sprayed with antitranspirant to reduced water loss. This limited the potential for evaporative leaf cooling and resulted in high leaf temperatures in Prosopis cineraria (Druce) and Zygophyllum qatarense (Hadidi). Diurnal measurements were made of leaf and air temperature and of of photosynthesis and transpiration. Antitranspirants did not significantly reduce transpiration in Heliotropium kotschyi (Guerke), which contained high concentrations of the quaternary compound betaine. Transpiration continued through the hottest periods of the day and appeared to be essential for leaf cooling. All species appeared to have a threshold leaf temperature above which photosynthesis was severely impaired. Samples were taken for analysis of amino acids, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and low molecular weight carbohydrates in conjunction photosynthesis and transpiration in order to examine any possible protective functions. In Prosopis cineraria the background concentration of the cyclitol, pinitol was high but there was no increase in response to the antitranspirant induced increase in leaf temperatures. Proline concentration increased in leaves of Zygophyllum qatarense throughout the day but this did not appear to be related to leaf temperature.  相似文献

Summary Bacteria from water cooling systems developed resistance to three different bactericides i.e. quarternary ammonium compound (QAC), isothiazolone and thiocarbamate. Resistance was induced by exposing isolates to increasing sublethal concentrations for a period of 10 weeks.Bacillus subtilis became resistant to 1000 mg l–1 QAC. Cross-resistance was also detected, e.g. isothiazolone induced resistance to QAC and thiocarbamate.  相似文献
