Associating quantitative genetic traits with quantitative behaviors is a relatively unexplored region of sensory neurobiology. The visual system is an ideal place to test models associating these levels of sensory perception. In this study, we reared cichlid fish from Lake Malawi in different ambient light environments. We then tested the visual sensitivities of these fish using the optomotor response (OMR) behavioral paradigm and measured the relative expression of cone opsin genes. We found that the light environment experienced by fish during development can alter gene expression, particularly as it applies to the long wavelength-sensitive (LWS) opsin gene. Also, fish from different rearing conditions exhibited different behavioral sensitivities. We combined these data with predictions of opsin pigment absorption by the different OMR stimuli to determine which cone types are most likely to influence the OMR behavior. While we hypothesized that this behavior would be controlled by a random-wiring model reflecting the expression of both medium wavelength-sensitive (MWS) and LWS opsins, our models suggest that only the LWS pigment is required to predict behavior. Furthermore, analyses show that LWS expression variation accounts for ~20% of the observed behavioral variance. This work confirms that sensory gene expression influences behavior in a predictable fashion. It also suggests that the neural wiring of basal visual pathways in cichlid fish may differ from that observed in mammals and zebrafish, but is similar to that described in goldfish. This finding has important implications for the evolution of the magnocellular neural pathway in teleosts.  相似文献

Hormones play a pivotal role in reproductive behavior and havebeen implicated in mediating mate choice decisions. Here weasked whether the differences in female reproductive state dependenton changes in hormone levels correspond to changes in femaleaffiliation with males. In the African cichlid fish, Astatotilapiaburtoni, males shift between reproductive (territorial; T) andnon-reproductive (non-territorial; NT) states depending on socialcontext while females alternate between gravid (egg bearing;G) and non-gravid (NG) reproductive states independent of socialconditions. Moreover, the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis controllingreproduction and reproductive hormones is substantially remodeledin both males and females depending on reproductive state. Tomeasure affiliative preference, gravid and non-gravid femaleswere given the choice of associating with T or NT males. Gravidfemales preferentially associated with T males, whereas non-gravidfemales showed no preference. To discover whether gravid femalesuse male size independent of dominance status as a cue for theirchoice, gravid females were given a choice between territorialmales of different sizes. Gravid females preferred the smallerof two T males, but the smaller T males were significantly moreactive. Our results show that associative change could be animportant behavioral mediator between hormonal cues and reproductivesuccess, and that females use a hierarchy of cues in decision-making,preferring to affiliate with T over NT males and, among T males,preferring more active animals.  相似文献

The evolutionary outcome of interspecific hybridization, i.e. collapse of species into a hybrid swarm, persistence or even divergence with reinforcement, depends on the balance between gene flow and selection against hybrids. If female mating preferences are open-ended but sign-inversed between species, they can theoretically be a source of such selection. Cichlid fish in African lakes have sustained high rates of speciation despite evidence for widespread hybridization, and sexual selection by female choice has been proposed as important in the origin and maintenance of species boundaries. However, it had never been tested whether hybridizing species have open-ended preference rules. Here we report the first experimental test using Pundamilia pundamilia, Pundamilia nyererei and their hybrids in three-way choice experiments. Hybrid males are phenotypically intermediate. Wild-caught females of both species have strong preferences for conspecific over heterospecific males. Their responses to F1 hybrid males are intermediate, but more similar to responses to conspecifics in one species and more similar to responses to heterospecifics in the other. We suggest that their mate choice mechanism may predispose haplochromine cichlids to maintain and perhaps undergo phenotypic diversification despite hybridization, and that species differences in female preference functions may predict the potential for adaptive trait transfer between hybridizing species.  相似文献

Morphological dimorphism in the mouth-opening direction ('lefty' versus 'righty') has been documented in several fish species. It has been suggested that this deflection is heritable in a Mendelian one-locus, two-allele fashion. Several population models have demonstrated that lateral dimorphism is maintained by negative frequency-dependent selection, resulting from interactions between predator and prey species. However, other mechanisms for the maintenance of lateral dimorphism have not yet been tested. Here, we found that the scale-eating cichlid fish Perissodus microlepis exhibited disassortative mating, in which reproductive pairings between lefties and righties occurred at higher than expected frequency (p<0.001). A previous study reported that a lefty-righty pairing produces a 1:1 ratio of lefty:righty young, suggesting that disassortative mating contributes to the maintenance of lateral dimorphism. A combination of disassortative mating and negative frequency-dependent selection may stabilize lateral dimorphism more than would a single mechanism.  相似文献

Twelve short tandem repeat markers were successfully isolated from a cichlid, Haplochromis chilotes, in Lake Victoria, and characterized in Haplochromis pyrrhocephalus. The microsatellite regions of these markers were found to have between two and 48 alleles with heterozygosity ranging from 0.07 to 0.97. No loci showed significant departures from the Hardy–Weinberg or linkage equilibrium after the Bonferroni correction (P > 0.05). Cross‐species amplification in other cichlids of Lake Victoria, Haplochromis laparogramma, Lithochromis rubripinnis, L. rufus and Haplochromis sp. ‘rockkribensis’, was successful.  相似文献

Olfactory sensitivity of the Mozambique tilapia to conspecific odours   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Electro-olfactogram (EOG) recordings from female Mozambique tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus gave large responses (up to 45 mV) to water previously occupied by sexually active males. Male body-fluids also elicited very strong olfactory responses with thresholds of detection of c . 1: 106.9 (bile), 1: 105.2 (urine) and 1: 104.9 (faeces). Considering the likely rates of release of these fluids, it is the urine that provides the strongest olfactory stimulus for females. Crude fractionation of the male water and body-fluids implicated: (a) sulphated compounds, possibly steroids, as the most potent odorant in the urine (and water previously occupied by males), and (b) bile acids in the faeces and bile. Although the olfactory system of Mozambique tilapia was found to be sensitive to a range of amino acids and bile acids, steroids present in Mozambique tilapia plasma and steroids known to act as pheromones in other species elicited negligible responses. Although the present study clearly suggests that chemical communication might be important in Mozambique tilapia, the exact chemical identity of the compounds involved, and their biological functions, remain to be elucidated.  相似文献

Small but significant differences were found in allele frequencies among five populations (overall F ST estimate (θ)=0·004, P=0·006; overall R ST estimate (RHO)=0·019, P <0·00001) of the demersal cichlid Copadichromis sp.'virginalis kajose', collected from five locations in Lake Malawi. Pairwise F ST estimates revealed significant differences between the most southerly population (Cape Maclear), and the three most northerly populations (Mbamba Bay, Metangula and Chilola). Pairwise R ST estimates also revealed significant differences between some populations, but no geographical pattern was discernible. There was no evidence of isolation by distance using either the shortest straight-line distance between samples, or the distance around the shoreline following a 50 m depth contour. F ST estimates were considerably lower than found in previous studies on the mbuna (rock-dwelling species), but higher than those found in a study of three pelagic cichlid species from Lake Malawi. Substructuring in C. sp.'virginalis kajose' appears to be on a similar scale to the Atlantic cod.  相似文献

Mechanisms of speciation in cichlid fish were investigated by analyzing population genetic models of sexual selection on sex-determining genes associated with color polymorphisms. The models are based on a combination of laboratory experiments and field observations on the ecology, male and female mating behavior, and inheritance of sex-determination and color polymorphisms. The models explain why sex-reversal genes that change males into females tend to be X-linked and associated with novel colors, using the hypothesis of restricted recombination on the sex chromosomes, as suggested by previous theory on the evolution of recombination. The models reveal multiple pathways for rapid sympatric speciation through the origin of novel color morphs with strong assortative mating that incorporate both sex-reversal and suppressor genes. Despite the lack of geographic isolation or ecological differentiation, the new species coexists with the ancestral species either temporarily or indefinitely. These results may help to explain different patterns and rates of speciation among groups of cichlids, in particular the explosive diversification of rock-dwelling haplochromine cichlids.  相似文献

Gravid female Malawian Pseudotropheus cichlids spent significantly more time with males that they subsequently chose as mates, indicating that time spent near a male is a valid and accurate method of measuring female preference. Furthermore, females preferred to mate with males that had longer pelvic fins and a larger number of eggspots on their anal fins. In some instances, females chose to mate with both of the males with which they were presented, possibly because they were unable to discriminate between them.  相似文献

Astatotilapia burtoni is a member of the “modern haplochromines,” the most species‐rich lineage within the family of cichlid fishes. Although the species has been in use as research model in various fields of research since almost seven decades, including developmental biology, neurobiology, genetics and genomics, and behavioral biology, little is known about its spatial distribution and phylogeography. Here, we examine the population structure and phylogeographic history of A. burtoni throughout its entire distribution range in the Lake Tanganyika basin. In addition, we include several A. burtoni laboratory strains to trace back their origin from wild populations. To this end, we reconstruct phylogenetic relationships based on sequences of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region (d‐loop) as well as thousands of genomewide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) derived from restriction‐associated DNA sequencing. Our analyses reveal high population structure and deep divergence among several lineages, however, with discordant nuclear and mtDNA phylogenetic inferences. Whereas the SNP‐based phylogenetic hypothesis uncovers an unexpectedly deep split in A. burtoni, separating the populations in the southern part of the Lake Tanganyika basin from those in the northern part, analyses of the mtDNA control region suggest deep divergence between populations from the southwestern shoreline and populations from the northern and southeastern shorelines of Lake Tanganyika. This phylogeographic pattern and mitochondrial haplotype sharing between populations from the very North and the very South of Lake Tanganyika can only partly be explained by introgression linked to lake‐level fluctuations leading to past contact zones between otherwise isolated populations and large‐scale migration events.  相似文献
