Microcebus murinus, a small nocturnal Malagasy primate, exhibits adaptive energy-saving strategies such as daily hypothermia and gregarious patterns during diurnal rest. To determine whether ambient temperature (Ta), food restriction and nest sharing can modify the daily body temperature (Tb) rhythm, Tb was recorded by telemetry during winter in six males exposed to different ambient temperatures (Ta=25, 20, 15°C) and/or to a total food restriction for 3 days depending on social condition (isolated versus pair-grouped). At 25°C, the daily rhythm of Tb was characterized by high Tb values during the night and lower values during the day. Exposure to cold significantly decreased minimal Tb values and lengthened the daily hypothermia. Under food restriction, minimal Tb values were also markedly lowered. The combination of food restriction and cold induced further increases in duration and depth of torpor bouts, minimal Tb reaching a level just above Ta. Although it influenced daily hypothermia less than environmental factors, nest sharing modified effects of cold and food restriction previously observed by lengthening duration of torpor but without increasing its depth. In response to external conditions, mouse lemurs may thus adjust their energy expenditures through daily modifications of both the duration and the depth of torpor.  相似文献

Two similar field trials were carried out during 2003 in a hot tropical region of eastern Ethiopia to investigate the effect of leaf and soil applied paclobutrazol on the growth, dry matter production and assimilate partitioning in potato. A month after planting paclobutrazol was applied as a foliar spray or soil drench at rates of 0, 2, 3, and 4 kg a.i. paclobutrazol ha–1. Plants were sampled during treatment application and subsequently 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks after treatment application. The data was analyzed using standard growth analyses techniques. None of the growth parameters studied was affected by the method of paclobutrazol application. Paclobutrazol decreased leaf area index, crop growth rate, and total biomass production, and increased specific leaf weight, tuber growth rate, net assimilation rate, and partitioning coefficient of potato. At all harvesting stages, paclobutrazol reduced the partitioning of assimilate to the leaves, stems, and roots and stolons and increased allocation to the tubers. Although paclobutrazol decreased the total biomass production it improved tuber yield by partitioning more assimilates to the tubers. Paclobutrazol improved the productivity of potato under tropical conditions by redirecting assimilate allocation to the tubers.  相似文献

Intensity of the cholesterol-to-coprostanol conversion in the intestine, as assessed by the coprostanol-to-cholesterol ratio in faeces, was found highly variable among 15 human volunteers, ranging from absent to almost complete cholesterol conversion. The number of coprostanoligenic bacteria in the same faecal samples, as estimated by the most probable number method, was found to be less than 10(6) cellsg-1 of fresh stools in the low-to-inefficient converters and at least 10(8) cellsg-1 of fresh stools in the highest converters, indicating that the population level of cultivable faecal coprostanoligenic bacteria correlated with the intensity of cholesterol-to-coprostanol conversion in the human gut. Microbial communities of the samples were profiled by temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TTGE) of bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicons. Dendrogram analysis of the TTGE profiles using the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and a unweighted pair group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA) algorithm clearly separated banding patterns from low-to-inefficient and high converters in two different clusters suggesting a relationship between TTGE profiles and coprostanoligenic activity. Principal components analysis further demonstrated that a large subset of bands rather than some individual bands contributed to this clustering.  相似文献

This study tested a new experimental apparatus to estimate thermal preferences of fish. The apparatus was designed to minimise the effect of the thermal history of the fish and allow for easy feeding. The set-up consisted of two connected sections of an aquarium, both receiving an excess of food, with slightly different water temperatures. Initially, the fish spent most of its time in one of the sections, but when the temperatures were slowly increased (or decreased), the fish spent increasingly more time in the other. The temperature at which the fish spent equal time in both sections was defined as the preferred temperature. Brown trout, Salmo trutta, preferred the reported optimal temperature for growth of the species. However, Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, selected a significantly lower temperature than its optimal temperature for growth and thus contradicted the general view of good correlation between the optimal temperature for growth and preferred temperature of fish. The reason for this may be that charr is optimising its growth efficiency instead of its growth rate. Individuals that utilise a limited resource in an optimal way, by selecting a temperature where the growth efficiency is maximised, will possibly be favoured. Several factors affect the distribution of fish in lakes, but the difference in thermal preference between charr and trout might partly explain the frequently observed niche segregation of these two species in Scandinavian lakes.  相似文献

Regulation of river flow and the amount of winter rainfall are the major factors affecting the water temperature of the spawning grounds, for green sturgeon in the Klamath River. During the primary spawning period of green sturgeon, mid-April to June, the water temperature may vary from 8 to 21°C. To estimate the potential implications of this modified thermal regime, we examined the survival and development in three progeny groups of green sturgeon embryos from zygote to hatch, at constant incubation temperatures (11–26°C). Temperatures 23–26°C affected cleavage and gastrulation and all died before hatch. Temperatures 17.5–22°C were suboptimal as an increasing number of embryos developed abnormally and hatching success decreased at 20.5–22°C, although the tolerance to these temperatures varied between progenies. The lower temperature limit was not evident from this study, although hatching rate decreased at 11°C and hatched embryos were shorter, compared to 14°C. The mean total length of hatched embryos decreased with increasing temperature, although their wet and dry weight remained relatively constant. We concluded that temperatures 17–18°C may be the upper limit of the thermal optima for green sturgeon embryos, and that the river thermal regime during dry years may affect green sturgeon reproduction.  相似文献

The present study investigates the effects of a chronic administration of diazepam, a benzodiazepine widely used as an anxiolytic, on locomotor activity and body core temperature rhythms in male Wistar rats housed under 12:12 light:dark (LD) cycle conditions. Diazepam was administered subcutaneously for 3 wks in a dosage of 3 mg/kg body weight/day, 1 h before the onset of darkness. Diazepam increased the level of locomotor activity from the first day until the end of treatment, and also increased the amplitude of the activity circadian rhythm, but only on the third wk of treatment. Diazepam exerted no effects on the length of the period and did not affect the phase of the locomotor activity rhythm. The body temperature rhythm of rats was affected neither by short-term (a single injection) nor by long-term (every day for 3 wks) diazepam treatment. Diazepam lacked effect on body core temperature even on the first day of administration, thereby ruling out the possibility of drug tolerance development. The fact that diazepam affects locomotor activity, but not core body temperature, suggests that different mechanisms mediate the actions of diazepam on locomotor activity and on core body temperature.  相似文献

Thermo-optically induced structural reorganizations have earlier been identified in isolated LHCII, the main chlorophyll a/b light harvesting complexes of Photosystem II, and in granal thylakoid membranes [Cseh et al. (2000) Biochemistry 39: 15250–15257; Garab et al. (2002) Biochemistry 41: 15121–15129]. According to the thermo-optic mechanism, structural changes can be induced by fast, local thermal transients due to the dissipation of excess excitation energy. In this paper, we analyze the temperature and light-intensity dependencies of thermo-optically induced reversible and irreversible reorganizations in the chiral macrodomains of lamellar aggregates of isolated LHCII and of granal thylakoid membranes. We show that these structural changes exhibit non-Arrhenius type of temperature dependencies, which originate from the ‘combination’ of the ambient temperature and the local thermal transient. The experimental data can satisfactorily be simulated with the aid of a simple mathematical model based on the thermo-optic effect. The model also predicts, in good accordance with experimental data published earlier and presented in this paper, that the reorganizations depend linearly on the intensity of the excess light, a unique property that is probably important in light adaptation and photoprotection of plants.  相似文献

Pollen competition and selection have significant evolutionary consequences, but very little is known about how they can be modulated. We have examined in cherry (Prunus avium L.) how pollen performance is affected by the genotype of the pollen and by the environmental conditions under which it grows, namely the pistilar tissue and temperature. The different pollen donor genotypes tested in this work differed in their behaviour both in vitro and in vivo and this behaviour was modulated depending on the female recipient they grew on. Furthermore, there was a significant temperature-genotype interaction that affected the pollen tube population census that succeeded in reaching the base of the style. The combination of these three factors, while enabling a capacity of response to variations in environmental pressures, could maintain variability in pollen performance avoiding the fixation of the genes that control pollen tube growth rate.  相似文献

Endostatin, a 20kDa C-terminal fragment of collagen XVIII, is a potent anti-angiogenic protein and inhibitor of tumor growth. Recombinant endostatin was prepared from Escherichia coli deposited as insoluble, inactive inclusion bodies. In the present study, we produced soluble and biologically active recombinant human endostatin (rhEndostatin) in E. coli by employing both co-expression of the molecular chaperones and lower temperature fermentation. Two groups of chaperones Trigger factor and GroEL-GroES (GroEL/ES), DnaK-DnaJ-GrpE and GroEL/ES, were co-expressed, respectively, with rhEndostatin at different temperatures (37, 25, and 16 degrees C). It revealed that low temperature or molecular chaperones alone could enhance the production of active rhEndostatin; meanwhile, combinational employment of low temperature cultivation (16 degrees C) together with co-expression of DnaK-DnaJ-GrpE and GroEL/ES was more effective to prevent aggregation of rhEndostatin. The production of soluble rhEndostatin was about 36 mg/L, and at least 16 mg of rhEndostatin was purified from 1L flask culture. The purified rhEndostatin specifically inhibited the proliferation of endothelial cell-bovine capillary endothelial cell in a dose-dependent manner, and it showed potent anti-angiogenic capability on the chorioallantoic membrane of chick embryo in vivo. Our study provides a feasible and convenient approach to produce soluble and biologically active rhEndostatin.  相似文献

AIMS: A better understanding of the role of antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the protection of Aspergillus niger spores against thermal stress. METHODS AND RESULTS: Conidiospores from A. niger 26 were subjected to wide range of temperatures (30, 50, 60 and 80 degrees C). The stress response was investigated by the determination of spore germination and mycelial growth of survivors under submerged cultivation. Exposure to any temperature above the optimal value induced an increase in SOD and CAT activities. PAGE demonstrated enhanced level of Cu/ZnSOD under stress conditions. We compared the influence of heat shock and superoxide-generating agent paraquat on growth and antioxidant enzyme defence and found different response to the both type of stresses. CONCLUSIONS: Heat stress elicits the enhanced synthesis of enzymes whose functions are to scavenge reactive oxygen species. These results suggested an association between thermal and oxidative stress. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Evidence is provided for the possibility that oxidative stress plays a major role in the effect of heat in low eucaryotes such as A. niger. This knowledge may be of importance in controlling both fermentation and pathogenicity.  相似文献
