Variation partitioning analyses combined with spatial predictors (Moran's eigenvector maps, MEM) are commonly used in ecology to test the fractions of species abundance variation purely explained by environment and space. However, while these pure fractions can be tested using a classical residuals permutation procedure, no specific method has been developed to test the shared space‐environment fraction (SSEF). Yet, the SSEF is expected to encompass a major driver of community assembly, that is, an induced spatial dependence effect (ISD; i.e. the reflection of a spatially structured habitat filter on a species distribution). A reliable test of this fraction is therefore crucial to properly test the presence of an ISD on ecological data. To bridge the gap, we propose to test the SSEF through spatially‐constrained null models: torus‐translations, and Moran spectral randomisations. We investigated the type I error rate and statistical power of our method based on two real environmental datasets and simulations of tree distributions. Ten types of tree distribution displaying contrasted aggregation properties were simulated, and their abundances were sampled in 153 regularly‐distributed 20 × 20 m quadrats. The SSEF was tested for 1000 simulated tree distributions either unrelated to the environment, or filtered by environmental variables displaying contrasting spatial structures. The method proposed provided a correct type I error rate (< 0.05). The statistical power was high (> 0.9) when abundances were filtered by an environmental variable structured at broad scale. However, the spatial resolution allowed by the sampling design limited the power of the method when using a fine‐scale filtering variable. This highlighted that an ISD can be properly detected providing that the spatial pattern of the filtering process is correctly captured by the sampling design of the study. Nest‐site selection is an important component of species socio‐ecology, being a crucial factor in establishment of group living. Consequently, nest‐site characteristics together with space‐use proxies may reveal the social organization of species, which is critical when direct observation of social interactions is hindered in nature. Importantly, nest‐site choice is expected to be under strong selective pressures and the object of intra‐ and interspecific competition. Although the bulk of research on sociality focuses on its ecological drivers, our study introduces interspecific competition as a potential factor that could influence social evolution. We investigated the influence of habitat and interspecific competition on the social organization of two sister species of the African four striped mouse, Rhabdomys dilectus dilectus and Rhabdomys bechuanae, in a similar macroenvironment. These species diverged in allopatry and occupy distinct environmental niches. We radiotracked 140 adults to identify their nest‐sites, determine nest characteristics and record groups that shared nest‐sites. Group cohesion was estimated from nest‐site fidelity, group association strength, and home range overlap within versus between group members. We compared the two species in sympatry versus parapatry to determine the impact of species interference on sociality. In parapatry, the two species selected distinct nest‐site types, interpreted as different anti‐predator strategies: R. bechuanae selected fewer, spaced, less concealed nest‐sites whereas R. d. dilectus selected clumped and less visible nest‐sites. Rhabdomys bechuanae also showed more cohesive and stable social groups than R. d. dilectus. In sympatry, compared to R. bechuanae, R. d. dilectus occupied similar nest‐sites, however slightly more exposed and clumped, and displayed similar nest‐site fidelity and group association strength. We conclude that although habitat selection may be an important driver of social divergence in Rhabdomys, species interference, by limiting R. d. dilectus movements and forcing nest‐site sharing may induce new ecological pressures that could influence its social evolution. 相似文献

Four Neotropical small and medium felids—the ocelot, jaguarundi, margay, and southern tiger cat—have overlapping geographic distributions in the endangered Atlantic Forest. Local studies show that these felids avoid areas with high human impact, but the three smaller ones use human‐modified areas more frequently than do ocelots. To understand how landscape changes affect the habitat distribution of these four felids in the Atlantic Forest of Argentina, we used maximum entropy models to analyze the effect of environmental and anthropogenic factors. We estimated niche breadth and overlap among these felids. The conversion of the native forest to land uses without trees was the most important variable that determined the habitat distribution of the four species. For all four species, the optimal habitat covered about 1/3 of the study area and corresponds mainly to the native forest areas. Nearly 50% of these areas had some level of protection. The niche width was higher for the small felids than for ocelots. Niche overlap was high for all species pairs, but higher among the small felids and lower for each of these with the ocelot. The four felids were negatively affected by native forest loss, with ocelots being more sensitive than the smaller felids. The conversion of unprotected forest areas to other types of land uses would imply a greater habitat loss for these felids. The protection of current remnants of Atlantic Forest in Argentina is important for the long‐term conservation of the four felids. Abstract in Spanish is available with online material. 相似文献

CASP13 has investigated the impact of sparse NMR data on the accuracy of protein structure prediction. NOESY and 15N-1H residual dipolar coupling data, typical of that obtained for 15N,13C-enriched, perdeuterated proteins up to about 40 kDa, were simulated for 11 CASP13 targets ranging in size from 80 to 326 residues. For several targets, two prediction groups generated models that are more accurate than those produced using baseline methods. Real NMR data collected for a de novo designed protein were also provided to predictors, including one data set in which only backbone resonance assignments were available. Some NMR-assisted prediction groups also did very well with these data. CASP13 also assessed whether incorporation of sparse NMR data improves the accuracy of protein structure prediction relative to nonassisted regular methods. In most cases, incorporation of sparse, noisy NMR data results in models with higher accuracy. The best NMR-assisted models were also compared with the best regular predictions of any CASP13 group for the same target. For six of 13 targets, the most accurate model provided by any NMR-assisted prediction group was more accurate than the most accurate model provided by any regular prediction group; however, for the remaining seven targets, one or more regular prediction method provided a more accurate model than even the best NMR-assisted model. These results suggest a novel approach for protein structure determination, in which advanced prediction methods are first used to generate structural models, and sparse NMR data is then used to validate and/or refine these models. 相似文献

Tetranychus urticae is a major agricultural pest with worldwide distribution that has caused considerable damage to vegetable crops in north‐eastern Brazil. The aim of the present study was to investigate the chemical and lethal/sublethal effects of essential oils from the peels of the lime (Citrus aurantiifolia), lemon (C. limon), mandarin orange (C. reticulata) and (C. reticulata × C. sinensis) as well as selected constituents (linalool, α‐terpineol, α‐pinene, β‐pinene, terpinolene and limonene) against T. urticae. The greatest yield was achieved with the mandarin and tangerine peel oils. The chemical analysis (gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry) of the essential oils from the Citrus fruit peels enabled the identification of 127 compounds, revealing a predominance of monoterpenes. Limonene was the major constituent, and α‐pinene, β‐pinene, linalool and α‐terpineol were found in substantial quantities. Regarding the susceptibility of T. urticae, the Citrus oils and selected constituents were more effective by fumigation than residual contact. The C. reticulata oil was the most toxic by fumigation, and the C. limon oil was the most toxic by residual contact. The constituent α‐terpineol exhibited the highest toxicity with both methods. At a sublethal concentration, the oils and selected constituents had significant effects on the fecundity, feeding preference and oviposition of the mite. Citrus oils and their constituents are potentially useful for the future integrated management of T. urticae due to their lethal and sublethal properties. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the action of these essential oils against non‐target organisms and determine the cost–benefit ratio for the formulation of an acaricide harvested from agro‐industrial waste from citric fruit processing activities for use in the integrated control of T. urticae. 相似文献

To investigate feeding‐related decisions in Aedes aegypti (L.), adults are presented with simple diets of paired gustatory stimuli conveying information concerning energy content, nutrient richness, osmotic balance and food toxicity in a two‐diet matrix assay. Assessment of mosquito gut contents indicates that both sexes accept single sugar diets in a dose‐dependent manner. When presented with a choice between two different yet equimolar sugar solutions, more individuals of both sexes accept the disaccharides, sucrose and trehalose, than the monosacharrides, fructose and glucose. The combination of pyranose and furanose sugars in solution, either physically associated (as in sucrose) or present as monomers (as glucose and fructose), is accepted over solutions containing a single sugar moiety. Using the two‐diet matrix assay, mosquito diet‐choice is also tested between two equimolar sucrose ‘driver’ solutions in which one is presented with various concentrations of another potential feeding cue ‘test’ compound (i.e. each of the 20 naturally‐occurring amino acids, sodium chloride, quinine or caffeine). Diet‐choice between the ‘driver’ sucrose‐only solution and the solution of the ‘driver’ sucrose containing a ‘test’ amino acid is influenced by sex, amino acid concentration and sucrose concentration. There is also an example of synergism between the diet components, leucine and sucrose. Mosquitoes demonstrate a dose‐dependent acceptance of sucrose‐only diets over sodium chloride‐containing sucrose when presented together. Interestingly, the sucrose‐only diet is accepted by more mosquitoes than all concentrations of the saline‐containing sucrose diets except those approximately isotonic to mosquito haemolymph, at which concentration mosquitoes show no clear choice between the diets. More individuals of both sexes accept sucrose‐only diets than the diets of caffeine‐containing sucrose in a dose‐dependent manner. Only females, however, respond to quinine‐containing sucrose diets and modulate this behaviour in relation to the energetic reward: more females imbibed quinine‐containing sucrose at the higher sucrose concentration (1 m ). A systematic characterization of diet selection behaviour of A. aegypti is presented for 27 putative feeding cues potentially involved in nectar/honeydew feeding. Correlations between protein structures and amino acid sequences are widely used for protein structure prediction. For example, secondary structure predictors generally use correlations between a secondary structure sequence and corresponding primary structure sequence, whereas threading algorithms and similar tertiary structure predictors typically incorporate interresidue contact potentials. To investigate the relative importance of these sequence-structure interactions, we measured the mutual information among the primary structure, secondary structure and side-chain surface exposure, both for adjacent residues along the amino acid sequence and for tertiary structure contacts between residues distantly separated along the backbone. We found that local interactions along the amino acid chain are far more important than non-local contacts and that correlations between proximate amino acids are essentially uninformative. This suggests that knowledge-based contact potentials may be less important for structure predication than is generally believed. 相似文献

We present a new automatic algorithm, named VoTAP (Vo ronoï T essellation A ssignment P rocedure), which assigns secondary structures of a polypeptide chain using the list of α‐carbon coordinates. This program uses three‐dimensional Voronoï tessellation. This geometrical tool associates with each amino acid a Voronoï polyhedron, the faces of which unambiguously define contacts between residues. Thanks to the face area, for the contacts close together along the primary structure (low‐order contacts) a distinction is made between strong and normal ones. This new definition yields new contact matrices, which are analyzed and used to assign secondary structures. This assignment is performed in two stages. The first one uses contacts between residues close together along the primary structure and is based on data collected on a bank of 282 well‐refined nonredundant structures. In this bank, associations were made between the prints defined by these low‐order contacts and the assignments performed by different automatic methods. The second step focuses on the strand assignment and uses contacts between distant residues.
