A field experiment was performed in a New Mexico (U.S.A.) stream to investigate the relation between size and diversity of substrate and numbers and diversity of colonizing insects. Baskets with either small gravel, large gravel, or a 1 : 1 mixture of the two sizes were placed in a riffle area and colonization was monitored for 19 days.Colonization was rapid, and both total number of individuals and number of species colonizing the substrates had stopped increasing by the end of the experiment. Fewer individuals colonized baskets downstream, suggesting that the drift is a major source of insect colonists. Small substrate supported more individuals and more species than the larger stones. Total number of individuals and the number of species on the mixed substrate were between numbers on small and large substrate. These results do not support previous generalizations on the relation between substrate size and complexity and the structure of invertebrate communities in streams. Results of the study are compared with the findings of recent experimental studies and it is suggested that earlier generalizations on the role of substrate size and complexity need to be reexamined.Order of authors was determined by the flip of a coin. Cortactin is an F‐actin binding protein that has been suggested to play key roles in various cellular functions. Here, we generated mice carrying floxed alleles of the cortactin (Cttn) gene (Cttnflox/flox mice). Expression of Cre recombinase in mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) isolated from Cttnflox/flox embryos depleted cortactin within days, without disturbing F‐actin distribution and localization of multiple actin‐binding proteins. Cre‐mediated deletion of Cttn also did not affect cell migration. To obtain mice with a Cttn null allele, we next crossed Cttnflox/flox mice with transgenic mice that express Cre recombinase ubiquitously. Western blot and immunocytochemical analysis confirmed complete elimination of cortactin expression in MEFs carrying homozygously Cttn null alleles. However, we found no marked alteration of F‐actin organization and cell migration in Cttn null‐MEFs. A method is presented that allows for a life cycle assessment (LCA) to provide environmental information on an energy infrastructure system while it evolves. Energy conversion facilities are represented in an agent-based model (ABM) as distinct instances of technologies with owners capable of making decisions based on economic and environmental information. This simulation setup allows us to explore the dynamics of assembly, disassembly, and use of these systems, which typically span decades, and to analyze the effect of using LCA information in decision making.
We were able to integrate a simplified LCA into an ABM by aligning and connecting the data structures that represent the energy infrastructure and the supply chains from source to sink. By using an appropriate database containing life cycle inventory (LCI) information and by solving the scaling factors for the technology matrix, we computed the contribution to global warming in terms of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents in the form of a single impact indicator for each instance of technology at each discrete simulation step. These LCAs may then serve to show each agent the impact of its activities at a global level, as indicated by its contribution to climate change. Similar to economic indicators, the LCA indicators may be fed back to the simulated decision making in the ABM to emulate the use of environmental information while the system evolves. A proof of concept was developed that is illustrated for a simplified LCA and ABM used to generate and simulate the evolution of a bioelectricity infrastructure system.  相似文献

Litter decomposition, a fundamental process of nutrient cycling and energy flow in freshwater ecosystems, is driven by a diverse array of decomposers. As an important component of the heterotrophic food web, meiofauna can provide a trophic link between leaf‐associated microbes (i.e., bacteria and fungi)/plant detritus and macroinvertebrates, though their contribution to litter decomposition is not well understood. To investigate the role of different decomposer communities in litter decomposition, especially meiofauna, we compared the litter decomposition of three leaf species with different lignin to nitrogen ratios in litter bags with different mesh sizes (0.05, 0.25, and 2 mm) in a forested stream, in China for 78 days. The meiofauna significantly enhanced the decomposition of leaves of high‐and medium‐ quality, while decreasing (negative effect) or increasing (positive effect) the fungal biomass and diversity. Macrofauna and meiofauna together contributed to the decomposition of low‐quality leaf species. The presence of meiofauna and macrofauna triggered different aspects of the microbial community, with their effects on litter decomposition varying as a function of leaf quality. This study reveals that the meiofauna increased the trophic complexity and modulated their interactions with microbes, highlighting the important yet underestimated role of meiofauna in detritus‐based ecosystems.  相似文献

Translocator protein (TSPO) is a high-affinity cholesterol- and drug-binding mitochondrial protein. Nuclear receptor subfamily 5 group A member 1 or steroidogenic factor 1 (Nr5a1)-Cre mice were previously used to generate steroidogenic cell-specific Tspo gene conditional knockout (cKO) mice. TSPO-depleted homozygotes showed no response to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in stimulating adrenal cortex corticosterone production but showed increased epinephrine synthesis in the medulla. No other phenotype was observed under normal growth conditions. During these studies, we noted that pairing two cKO mice resulted in the generation of small pups. These pups showed low growth rate at weaning, which has been linked to the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in adulthood. Experimental verification of T2D symptoms via blood testing of the adult mice, including glycated hemoglobin and insulin C-peptide measurements, showed that these Tspo cKO mice exhibited sustained hyperglycemia, a sign of prediabetes, likely due to the augmentation of hepatic glucose production mediated by the increased epinephrine. We also observed increased expression of the S100a8 gene, which is upregulated after chronic glucose stimulation. Taken together, the observed prediabetes phenotype and lack of response to ACTH indicate that Tspo cKO mice (Nr5a1-Cre+/?, Tspofl/fl) could provide a useful model to study the link between diabetes and stress.  相似文献

The influence of structural complexity on the foraging success for host eggs (Ephestia kuehniella Zeller) by Trichogramma minutum Riley was investigated in the laboratory. Naive females were released into arenas with structurally different paper models or foliage (simple: trembling aspen Populus tremuloides Michx., complex: balsam fir Abies balsamea L.). Observations of individual females were made every 15 min and searching success was measured by the number of host egg clusters found and the amount of time taken to find them, within a period of 196 min. Females found significantly more egg clusters and were quicker at finding them on the sample paper and foliage surfaces than on the most complex paper or foliage surfaces. Older females (2–3 days) were more successful and searched quicker than younger (<24 h) females on all paper surfaces. The timed observations suggested that wasps which spent more time walking had a significantly decreased probability of finding an egg mass and were significantly slower at finding them. Females that spent more time on paper surfaces had an increased probability of finding an egg mass. The significance of searching differences is discussed in relation to the potential effects of plant surfaces on Trichogramma movements and to the physiological readiness of the wasp.  相似文献

To cope with the daunting challenges posed by system complexity while maximizing their organizational interests, resource management institutions must implement strategies aimed at reducing some of the particular dimensions of complexity. Virtually all of the recent initiatives to improve resource management—ecosystem management, adaptive management, stakeholder negotiation, disturbance prevention, multiple mandates for resource management agencies, resource homogenization, restoration ecology, the creation of protected areas, the restoration of local-user rights, and algorithmic resource exploitation rules—are vulnerable to inappropriate interest-driven simplifications, many of which result from patterns of perverse learning. A research agenda designed to identify better means of coping with complexity and the effects of organizational interests could help to improve resource and environmental management.
