Independent observer teams made concurrent counts of Irrawaddy dolphins Orcaella brevirostris and Ganges River dolphins Platanista gangetica gangetica in mangrove channels of the Sundarbans Delta in Bangladesh. These counts were corrected for missed groups using mark-recapture models. For Irrawaddy dolphins, a stratified Lincoln-Petersen model, which incorporated group size and sighting conditions as covariates, and a Huggins conditional likelihood model, which averaged models that individually incorporated group size, sighting conditions, and channel width as covariates, generated abundance estimates of 397 individuals (CV = 10.2%) and 451 individuals (CV = 9.6%), respectively. For Ganges River dolphins, a stratified Lincoln-Petersen model, which incorporated group size as a covariate, and a Huggins conditional likelihood model, which averaged the same models described above, generated abundance estimates of 196 individuals (CV = 12.7%) and 225 individuals (CV = 12.6%), respectively. Although the estimates for both models were relatively close, the analytical advantages of the Huggins models probably outweigh those of the Lincoln-Petersen models. However, the latter should be considered appropriate when simplicity is a priority. This study found that waterways of the Sundarbans support significant numbers of Irrawaddy and Ganges River dolphins, especially compared to other areas where the species have been surveyed.  相似文献

An efficient recursive polynomial multiplication method is proposed for exact unconditional power calculation for unordered 2 × K contingency table with up to moderate sample size. Our method can be applied to the family of cell-additive statistics which includes the Freeman-Halton statistic, the Pearson χ2 statistic and the likelihood ratio statistic. The number of transgenic mouse lines expressing Cre in either type of pigment cells (melanocytes and retinal pigment epithelium, RPE) is limited, and the available lines do not always offer sufficient specificity. In this study, we addressed this issue and we report on the generation of a MART‐1::Cre BAC transgenic mouse line, in which the expression of Cre recombinase is controlled by regulatory elements of the pigment cell‐specific gene MART‐1 (mlana). When MART‐1::Cre BAC transgenic mice were bred with the ROSA26‐R reporter line, ß‐galactosidase expression was observed in RPE from E12.5 onwards, and in melanocyte precursors from E17.5, indicating that the MART‐1::Cre line provides Cre recombinase activity in pigment‐producing cells rather than in a particular lineage. In addition, breeding of this mouse line to mice carrying a conditional allele of RBP‐Jκ corroborated the reported phenotypes in both pigment cell lineages, inducing hair greying and microphthalmia. Our results thus suggest, that the MART‐1::Cre line may serve as a novel and useful tool for functional studies in melanocytes and the RPE.genesis 49:403–409, 2011. © 2011 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Conditional strategies are the most common form of discrete phenotypic plasticity. In a conditional strategy, the phenotype expressed by an organism is determined by the difference between an environmental cue and a threshold, both of which may vary among individuals. The environmental threshold model (ETM) has been proposed as a mean to understand the evolution of conditional strategies, but has been surprisingly seldom applied to empirical studies. A hindrance for the application of the ETM is that often, the proximate cue triggering the phenotypic expression and the individual threshold are not measurable, and can only be assessed using a related observable cue. We describe a new statistical model that can be applied in this common situation. The Latent ETM (LETM) allows for a measurement error in the phenotypic expression of the individual environmental cue and a purely genetically determined threshold. We show that coupling our model with quantitative genetic methods allows an evolutionary approach including an estimation of the heritability of conditional strategies. We evaluate the performance of the LETM with a simulation study and illustrate its utility by applying it to empirical data on the size-dependent smolting process for stream-dwelling Atlantic salmon juveniles.  相似文献

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are multifunctional growth factors belonging to the transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) multigene family. Current evidence indicates that they may play different and even antagonistic roles at different stages of limb development. Refined studies of their function in these processes have been impeded in the mouse due to the early lethality of null mutants for several BMP ligands and their receptors. Recently, however, these questions have benefited from the very powerful Cre-loxP technology. In this review, I intend to summarize what has been learned from this conditional mutagenesis approach in the mouse limb, focusing on Bmp2, Bmp4 and Bmp7 while restricting my analysis to the initial phases of limb formation and patterning. Two major aspects are discussed, the role of BMPs in dorsal-ventral polarization of the limb bud, together with their relation to apical ectodermal ridge (AER) induction, and their role in controlling digit number and identity. Particular attention is paid to the methodology, its power and its limits.  相似文献

Motivated by the modelling of non-Gaussian data or positivelycorrelated data on a lattice, extensions of Besag's automodelsto exponential families with multi-dimensional parameters havebeen proposed recently. We provide a multiple-parameter analogueof Besag's one-dimensional result that gives the necessary formof the exponential families for the Markov random field's conditionaldistributions. We propose estimation of parameters by maximumpseudolikelihood and give a proof of the consistency of theestimators for the multi-parameter automodel. The methodologyis illustrated with examples, in particular the building ofa cooperative system with beta conditional distributions. Wealso indicate future applications of these models to the analysisof mixed-state spatial data.  相似文献

Rats were trained to discriminate short or long durations of houselight illumination using a choice procedure. During the test phase of each trial, the left and right levers were presented with an auditory cue above one of them on (cued lever) while the other was off (uncued lever). The auditory cue was presented immediately after sample offset and the levers were inserted after the auditory cue had been presented for 2 s. For half of the rats, the correct response following the short sample was to press the cued lever, while following the long sample, it was to press the uncued lever. This was reversed for the remaining rats. Following acquisition of the discrimination, two different types of delay tests were administered. In the first set, the delay between offset of the sample and onset of the auditory cue was manipulated (Cue Delay Test). In the second set, the delay between onset of the auditory cue and entry of the levers into the chamber was manipulated (Response Delay Test). Cue Delay testing resulted in a choose-long bias at the longer delays. Response Delay testing did not result in a systematic response bias and there was little forgetting over the delay interval. These data suggest that the rats did not stop the internal clock when the nominal sample was offset, but allowed it to keep running until the auditory cue was presented. The data from the Response Delay Test indicate that either a response decision was made based on the clock reading as soon as the auditory cue was presented, or the clock reading itself was retained over the delay with no subjective shortening and little forgetting.  相似文献
