We explored mechanisms determining the upper altitudinal limit of ephemeropterans from two different genera: Leptohyphes Eaton, 1882 Eaton, A.E. (1882), ?An Announcement of New Genera of the Ephemeridae?, The Entomologist's Monthly Magazine, 18, 207208. [Google Scholar] (Leptohyphidae) and Lachlania Hagen, 1868 Hagen, H.A. (1868), ?On Lachlania Abnormis: A New Genus and Species from Cuba Belonging to the Ephemerina?, Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, 11, 372375. [Google Scholar] (Oligoneuriidae). For this, we (1) surveyed the two taxa in 165 stream sites along a wide altitudinal gradient; (2) sampled benthic fauna at short altitudinal intervals along a stream, from 2780 to 3150 m above sea level; (3) collected adults at the lowest and highest sites; and (4) transplanted nymphs from the lowest to the highest study site in our stream to determine survival over time. Densities of the two taxa declined gradually with altitude and both disappeared between 2950 and 3080 m a.s.l. The upper altitudinal limit in the stream seemed to be most closely related to mean oxygen saturation, temperature, and current velocity. Adults were collected where the nymphs were found, but not at the upstream site where the nymphs were absent, implying limited upstream dispersal of adults and some of the altitudinal constraint lying at the adult stage. Short-term survival of transplanted nymphs was lower than that of controls, suggesting that the distribution was limited at the juvenile stage, and that at least some of the altitudinal constraint is related to the abiotic stream environment.  相似文献

Hydraulic redistribution (HR), the movement of water from wet to dry patches in the soil via roots, occurs in different ecosystems and plant species. By extension of the principle that HR is driven by gradients in soil water potential, HR has been proposed to occur for plants in saline soils. Despite the inherent spatial patchiness and salinity gradients in these soils, the lack of direct evidence of HR in response to osmotic gradients prompted us to ask the question: are there physical or physiological constraints to HR for plants in saline environments? We propose that build‐up of ions in the root xylem sap and in the leaf apoplast, with the latter resulting in a large predawn disequilibrium of water potential in shoots compared with roots and soil, would both impede HR. We present a conceptual model that illustrates how processes in root systems in heterogeneous salinity with water potential gradients, even if equal to those in non‐saline soils, will experience a dampened magnitude of water potential gradients in the soil–plant continuum, minimizing or preventing HR. Finally, we provide an outlook for understanding the relevance of HR for plants in saline environments by addressing key research questions on plant salinity tolerance.  相似文献

The EPR properties of in vivo and in vitro C14X–PS I and C51X–PS I (X = D, S, A or G) mutants of PsaC are compared in an attempt to extract information about electron transfer not contained in any one of these studies in isolation. This analysis indicates that 1) sulfur from an external 'rescue thiolate' is preferred over oxygen from an aspartate or serine replacement amino acid as a ligand to the FA and FB iron-sulfur clusters; 2) the inherent spectroscopic symmetry in the FA and FB clusters of unbound PsaC is lost when PsaC is docked to its site on the PsaA/PsaB heterodimer; 3) the bound 'rescue thiolate' ligand in the modified site of the FA cluster, but not the FB, cluster is displaced when PsaC is docked to its site on the PsaA/PsaB heterodimer; 4) the free energy of binding PsaC to the PsaA/PsaB heterodimer drives the otherwise-unfavorable ligand replacement in the FA site. These and other findings argue that the substitute ligands support a [4Fe–4S] cluster at the modified site, but the cluster is in either a ground spin state of S 3/2 or S = 1/2 depending on the chemical identity of the ligand, on whether PsaC is unbound or bound, and on the reduction state of the cluster in the unmodified site. By a comparative analysis of the spin state distribution of the in vivo and in vitro C14X–PS I and C51X–PS I (X = D, S, A or G) mutants, and with knowledge from the X-ray crystal structure that PsaC is bound asymmetrically to the PS I reaction center, an independent case is made that PsaC is oriented so that the FA cluster is proximal to FX and the FB cluster is distal to FX. These results are compared and contrasted with the results of in vivo mutagenesis studies of PsaC in Anabaena variabilis ATCC 29413 and in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. In all cases, the primary data can be interpreted to support the sequence of electron transfer as FX FA FB ferredoxin.  相似文献

Viscometric properties of polymer are explored by the many-body dissipative particle dynamics (MDPD) using Lees–Edwards boundary conditions. The equation of state for the MDPD system is modified by fitting the density correction to different values of the cut-off radius. Due to the many-body interactions in MDPD, the viscosity contributed from the conservative force increases considerably with increasing repulsive coefficient, density and cut-off radius, and cannot be ignored compared to the ‘standard’ DPD case. The influence of these parameters on the MDPD viscosity is investigated, and we propose an equation to predict the viscosity in MDPD model. Additionally, the dumbbell polymer suspension model is investigated in the MDPD fluid, and the relations concerning first normal stress difference and shear rate, the relaxation time and spring constant, are consistent to theoretical works. We conclude that the MDPD model can be used to investigate the dynamics of non-Newtonian droplets.  相似文献

Rotaviruses ubiquitously infect children under the age of 5, being responsible for more than half a million diarrhoeal deaths each year worldwide. Host cell oligosaccharides containing sialic acid(s) are critical for attachment by rotaviruses. However, to date, no detailed three-dimensional atomic model showing the exact rotavirus interactions with these glycoconjugate receptors has been reported. Here, we present the first crystallographic structures of the rotavirus carbohydrate-recognizing protein VP8? in complex with ganglioside GM3 glycans. In combination with assessment of the inhibition of rotavirus infectivity by N-acetyl and N-glycolyl forms of this ganglioside, our results reveal key details of rotavirus-ganglioside GM3 glycan recognition. In addition, they show a direct correlation between the carbohydrate specificities exhibited by VP8? from porcine and by monkey rotaviruses and the respective infectious virus particles. These novel results also indicate the potential binding interactions of rotavirus VP8? with other sialic acid-containing gangliosides.  相似文献

Background: Epiphyte removal forms part of routine management in shade coffee plantations.

Aims: Assess the current status of three population orchids growing in Mexican shaded coffee plantations and evaluate the effect of perturbing the transient behaviour of different life stages.

Methods: We modelled the short-term response of eliminating I) non-reproductive juveniles, or II) reproductive adult plants from coffee bushes, on populations of Oncidium poikilostalix, Lepanthes acuminata and Telipogon helleri (Orchidaceae). First, we calculated the transient dynamics per se and second, we made a perturbation analysis on population inertia. Finally, we made a comparison with a traditional sensitivity analysis.

Results: All three species showed different positive asymptotic growth rate: O. poikilostalix (λmax = 1.106), L. acuminata (λmax = 1.209), and T. helleri (λmax = 1.012). The effect of eliminating the major part of the juvenile or adult orchids gave population inertia in relation to steady state, respectively, (+19%, -24%) for O. poikilostalix, (+17%, -28%) for T. helleri and (+57%, -35%) for L. acuminata.

Conclusions: Eliminating juveniles or adults affects in different ways the short-term dynamics due to differential impact on size stages that have the non-linear effects associated with important disturbances that currently affect orchids growing in coffee plantations.  相似文献

Some goals of bioelectronics—interfacing biology and electronics — are the understanding of supramolecular bioprocesses and the construction of supramolecular devices. The principles for the design and fabrication of machineries with functional components of molecular size are inspired by reflecting on biosystems, and it seems important to consider such principles. We first discuss attempts to construct supramolecular machines, and then we consider the bacterial reaction centre as an example where supramolecular engineering helps to elucidate a bioprocess. We then discuss possible mechanisms leading to the emergence of life-like systems in the light of the basic principles used to design supramolecular devices. Finally, we reflect on prospects in molecular engineering inspired by studying the emergence of life-like systems.  相似文献

Influenza virus assembles in the budozone, a cholesterol-/sphingolipid-enriched (“raft”) domain at the apical plasma membrane, organized by hemagglutinin (HA). The viral protein M2 localizes to the budozone edge for virus particle scission. This was proposed to depend on acylation and cholesterol binding. We show that M2–GFP without these motifs is still transported apically in polarized cells. Employing FRET, we determined that clustering between HA and M2 is reduced upon disruption of HA’s raft-association features (acylation, transmembranous VIL motif), but remains unchanged with M2 lacking acylation and/or cholesterol-binding sites. The motifs are thus irrelevant for M2 targeting in cells.  相似文献
