It has been hypothesized Rotylenchulus reniformis (Rr) has a competitive advantage over Meloidogyne incognita (Mi) in the southeastern cotton production region of the United States. This study examines the reproduction and development of Meloidogyne incognita (Mi) and Rotylenchulus reniformis (Rr) in separate and concomitant infections on cotton. Under greenhouse conditions, cotton seedlings were inoculated simultaneously with juveniles (J2) of M. incognita and vermiform adults of R. reniformis in the following ratios (Mi:Rr): 0:0, 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100. Soil populations of M. incognita and R. reniformis were recorded at 3, 6, 9, 14, 19, 25, 35, 45, and 60 days after inoculations. At each date, samples were taken to determine the life stage of development, number of egg masses, eggs per egg mass, galls, and giant cells or syncytia produced by the nematodes. Meloidogyne incognita and R. reniformis were capable of initially inhibiting each other when the inoculum ratio of one species was higher than the other. In concomitant infections, M. incognita was susceptible to the antagonistic effect of R. reniformis. Rotylenchulus reniformis affected hatching of M. incognita eggs, delayed secondary infection of M. incognita J2, reduced the number of egg masses produced by M. incognita, and reduced J2 of M. incognita 60 days after inoculations. In contrast, M. incognita reduced R. reniformis soil populations only when its proportion in the inoculum ratio was higher than that of R. reniformis. Meloidogyne incognita reduced egg masses produced by R. reniformis, but not production of eggs and secondary infection.  相似文献

The interaction between Meloidogyne incognita and Criconemella xenoplax on nematode reproduction and growth of Lovell peach was studied in field microlots and the greenhouse. Meloidogyne incognita suppressed reproduction of C. xenoplax in both field and greenhouse experiments. Tree growth, as measured by trunk diameter, was reduced (P ≤ 0.05) in the presence of M. incognita as compared with C. xenoplax of the uninoculated control trees 26 months following inoculation. A similar response regarding dry root weight was also detected in greenhouse-grown seedlings after 5 months. The presence of C. xenoplax did not affect Lovell tree growth. A synergistic effect causing a reduction (P ≤ 0.05) in tree growth was recorded 26 and 38 months following inoculation. The presence of M. incognita increased levels of malonyl-1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid content in leaves of trees grown in field microplots 19 months after inoculaoon. Meloidogyne incognita appears to be a more dominant parasite than C. xenoplax on Lovell peach.  相似文献

Heterodera schachtii significantly (P = 0.05) reduced sugarbeet root growth below that of uninoculated controls at 20, 24, and 28 C, and Ditylenchus dipsaci significantly (P = 0.05) reduced root growth below that of uninoculated controls at 16, 20, 24, and 28 C. A combination of H. schachtii and D. dipsaci significantly (P = 0.05) reduced root growth below that of single inoculations of H. schachtii at all temperatures and D. dipsaci at 20, 24, and 28 C. Single inoculations of H. schachtii and D. dipsaci significantly (P = 0.05) reduced top growth of sugarbeet below that of uninoculated controls at 20, 24, and 28 C, and 16, 20, 24, and 28 C, respectively. A combination of the two nematodes significantly (P = 0.05) reduced top growth below that of single inoculations of H. schachtii at all temperatures. However, a combination of the two nematodes failed to significantly (P = 0.05) reduce top growth below that of single inoculations of D. dipsaci at any temperature. Inoculations of either H. schachtii or D. dipsaci did not affect penetration of the other nematode, and D. dipsaci did not affect development and reproduction of H. schachtii. D. dipsaci did not reproduce on sugarbeet.  相似文献

Pathogenicity and reproduction of single and combined populations of Meloidogyne arenaria and M. incognita on a susceptible soybean (Glycine max cv. Davis) were investigated. Significant galling and egg mass production were observed on roots of greenhouse-grown soybean inoculated with M. arenaria and M. incognita, in combination and individually. M. arenaria produced more galls and egg masses than M. incognita, whereas in combined inoculation with both nematode species, gall and egg production was intermediate. In growth chamber tests, inoculations with M. arenaria and M. incognita, singly or in combination, produced more galls and egg masses at 30 C than at 25 C. At 25 C, M. arenaria alone produced significantly more galls and egg masses than the combined M. arenaria plus M. incognita, while M. incognita produced the fewest. At 30 C, numbers of egg masses produced by M. arenaria did not differ significantly from combined M. arenaria and M. incognita. In temperature tank tests, M. incognita produced more galls and egg masses at 28 C than at 24 C soil temperature. In contrast, numbers of galls, egg masses, and eggs of M. arenaria were slightly higher at 24 C than at 28 C. Combined inoculum of both nematode species produced greater numbers of galls at 24 C than at 28 C.  相似文献

Photosynthetic and growth characteristics of Mosla chinensis and M. scabra were compared at three irradiances similar to shaded forest understory, forest edge, and open land. At 25 % full ambient irradiance, M. chinensis and M. scabra had similar photosynthetic characteristics, but saturation irradiance, compensation irradiance, and apparent quantum yield of M. chinensis were higher than those of M. scabra at full ambient irradiance and 70 % full ambient irradiance. At the same irradiance treatment, specific leaf area and leaf area ratio of M. chinensis were lower than those of M. scabra. Photon-saturated photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency of M. chinensis, however, were not significantly higher than those of M. scabra, and the leaf area and total biomass were lower than those of M. scabra. As a sun-acclimated plant, the not enough high photosynthetic capacity and lower biomass accumulation may cause that M. chinensis has weak capability to extend its population and hence be concomitant in the community.  相似文献

The root‐knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita is known to increase the severity of bacterial wilt in many solanaceous crops. In Japan, several bacterial wilt‐resistant rootstocks that have the M. incognita resistance (Mi) gene in their genome have been developed for tomatoes. In this study, we aimed to examine whether the presence of Mi gene‐breaking M. incognita population affects the development of bacterial wilt in bacterial‐wilt‐resistant tomato rootstocks with Mi in their genetic background. We also aimed to examine the possibility of using high‐grafted tomatoes to control bacterial wilt in plants infected by M. incognita. Our results indicate that the resistance to bacterial wilt was easy to break in usual‐grafted tomato plants infected with M. incognita and that M. incognita enhanced the vertical movement of Ralstonia solanacearum in the bacterial‐wilt‐resistant tomato rootstocks. In addition, our results suggest that high grafting led to significantly less wilting in the plants infected by M. incognita than did usual grafting.  相似文献

Interactions among Meloidogyne incognita, Pratylenchus brachyurus, and soybean genotype on plant growth and nematode reproduction were studied in a greenhouse. Coker 317 (susceptible to both nematodes) and Gordon (resistant to M. incognita, susceptible to P. brachyurus) were inoculated with increasing initial population densities (Pi) of both nematodes individually and combined. M. incognita and P. brachyurus individually usually suppressed shoot growth of both cultivars, but only root growth on Coker 317 was influenced by a M. incognita × P. brachyurus interaction. Reproduction of both nematodes, although dependent on Pi, was mutually suppressed on Coker 317. P. brachyurus reproduced better on Gordon than on Coker 317 but did not affect resistance to M. incognita. Root systems of Coker 317 were split and inoculated with M. incognita or P. brachyurus or both to determine the nature of the interaction. M. incognita suppressed reproduction of P. brachyurus either when coinhabiting a half-root system or infecting opposing half-root systems; however, P. brachyurus affected M. incognita only if both nematodes infected the same half-root system.  相似文献

Individuals of free-living organisms are often infected simultaneously by a community of parasites. If the co-infecting parasites interact, then this can add significantly to the diversity of host genotypexparasite genotype interactions. However, interactions between parasite species are usually not examined considering potential variation in interactions between different strain combinations of co-infecting parasites. Here, we examined the importance of interactions between strains of fish eye flukes Diplostomum spathaceum and Diplostomum gasterostei on their infectivity in naive fish hosts. We assessed the infection success of strains of both species in single-strain exposures and in co-exposures with a random strain of the other species. Parasite infection success did not consistently increase or decrease in the co-exposure treatment, but depended on the combinations of co-infecting parasite strains. This disrupted the relative infectivity of D. spathaceum strains observed in single-strain exposures. The infection success of D. gasterostei strains was independent of exposure type. These results suggest that interactions among parasite species may be strain specific and potentially promote maintenance of genetic polymorphism in parasite populations.  相似文献

Most studies of virulence of infection focus on pairwise host–parasite interactions. However, hosts are almost universally co-infected by several parasite strains and/or genotypes of the same or different species. While theory predicts that co-infection favours more virulent parasite genotypes through intensified competition for host resources, knowledge of the effects of genotype by genotype (G × G) interactions between unrelated parasite species on virulence of co-infection is limited. Here, we tested such a relationship by challenging rainbow trout with replicated bacterial strains and fluke genotypes both singly and in all possible pairwise combinations. We found that virulence (host mortality) was higher in co-infections compared with single infections. Importantly, we also found that the overall virulence was dependent on the genetic identity of the co-infecting partners so that the outcome of co-infection could not be predicted from the respective virulence of single infections. Our results imply that G × G interactions among co-infecting parasites may significantly affect host health, add to variance in parasite fitness and thus influence evolutionary dynamics and ecology of disease in unexpected ways.  相似文献

The first stage of malaria infections takes place inside the host''s hepatocytes. Remarkably, Plasmodium parasites do not infect hepatocytes immediately after reaching the liver. Instead, they migrate through several hepatocytes before infecting their definitive host cells, thus increasing their chances of immune destruction. Considering that malaria can proceed normally without cell traversal, this is indeed a puzzling behaviour. In fact, the role of hepatocyte traversal remains unknown to date, implying that the current understanding of malaria is incomplete. In this work, we hypothesize that the parasites traverse hepatocytes to actively trigger an immune response in the host. This behaviour would be part of a strategy of superinfection exclusion aimed to reduce intraspecific competition during the blood stage of the infection. Based on this hypothesis, we formulate a comprehensive theory of liver-stage malaria that integrates all the available knowledge about the infection. The interest of this new paradigm is not merely theoretical. It highlights major issues in the current empirical approach to the study of Plasmodium and suggests new strategies to fight malaria.  相似文献
