To evaluate the influence of overwintering individuals of zooplankton on spring zooplankton communities, the dynamics of zooplankton
communities with or without overwintering individuals were observed in experimental ponds from fall to spring. An insecticide,
carbaryl, was used to regulate the overwintering individuals. In ponds which received insecticide applications in November
or January, all cladoceran and rotiferan species were eliminated by the treatments and did not reappear until late March or
early April, even when the chemical disappeared rapidly. The low water temperature may delayed the establishment of the populations
from resting eggs. In these ponds, populations of various cladoceran and rotiferan species, which seemed to be originated
from resting eggs, were built up in the spring. In control ponds,Daphnia ambigua orD. longispina overwintered as juveniles and adults and established a large spring population earlier than other cladocerans and rotifers
overwintering as resting eggs. The latter zooplankters did not increase in the spring probably because their growth was suppressed
by the precedingDaphnia species through competition. In nature, even if the number of overwintering individuals is small, they may have a potential
to build up a large population earlier than the individuals hatching from resting eggs. As a result, the species which have
overwintered as individuals seem to predominate in the spring and have a large influence on the spring zooplankton community. 相似文献

Aboveground biomass and litterfall ofPinus pumila scrubs, growing on the Kiso mountain range in central Japan, were investigated from 1984 to 1985. The biomass of two research
plots (P1 and P2) with different scrub heights was estimated by two methods, the stratified clip technique and the allometric
method. Aboveground total biomass estimated by the latter method reached 181 ton d.w. ha−1 in P1 and 132 ton d.w. ha−1 in P2. Creeping stems contributed to about half of the total biomass. Although estimates of woody organs differed between
the two plots, leaf biomass estimates were almost the same at 15.5 ton d.w. ha−1. The canopies of the twoP. pumila scrubs were characterized by a large mean leaf area density of 5.0 m2 m−3. Despite this large area density, relatively moderate attenuation of light intensity was observed. Specific leaf area generally
increased with reduced leaf height. Annual total litterfall was estimated to be 3.60 ton d.w. ha−1 yr−1 in P1 and 2.39 ton d.w. ha−1 yr−1 in P2. Annual leaf fall in both plots was approximately 2.0 ton d.w. ha−1 yr−1. Leaves fell mainly in early autumn. Annual loss rates of branches, estimated as the sum of annual branch litterfall and

The mode of antitumor action of rHu-TNF was elucidated in BALB/c mice bearing Meth A fibrosarcoma 7 days after transplantation with respect to time course, dose-response relationships and selectivity of the effects. The maximal cytotoxic effect on tumor cells revealed by inhibition of DNA synthesis and maximal lesional effect on tumor vasculature revealed by change in blood pool-size in the tissue were detected at 30 min and I h after administration of rHu-TNF, respectively. The dose-response relationship between cytotoxic and tumoricidal effects of rHu-TNF was irrespective of administration route. ED50s of these antitumor effects afteri.v. administration of rHu-TNF were about 50 times as high as ED50s afteri.t. administration. ED50 ofi.t. given rHu-TNF for vascular effect was about 20 times as high as that for cytotoxicity while ED50 ofi.v. rHu-TNF for vascular effect was only 2–3 times as high as that for cytotoxicity. The whole body autoradiographies with [125I] HSA giveni.v. to see the blood influx into tumor tissue and [14C]thymidine given i.v. to see DNA synthesis in the whole body after administration of rHu-TNF revealed that the distribution of radioactivity was markedly changed in the tumor alone without any detectable change in other whole body tissues.In conclusion, thein vivo antitumor effect of rHu-TNF giveni.t. ori.v., appears to be exerted through the direct action on Meth A sarcoma rather than indirectly on tumor vasculature. Summary A gas transport system based upon the physico-chemical effect of thermo-osmosis of gases in described for the black alder, Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. Air is transported through the alder's stem to the roots, thus improving O2 supply to respiring tissues of the root system. The gas transport system is investigated by means of a tracer gas technique (11% ethane in air, v/v). Gas transport depends on any source of radiant heat generating a temperature difference between the tree's stems and the atmosphere. The amount of gas transported in leafless trees is four times higher than the amount of gas reaching the roots by gas diffusion. Two-thirds of the gas is transported in the wood, only one-third in the bark. Intercellular spaces inside the porous lenticels of the bark are responsible for this kind of gas transport. Summary In an uneven-aged, multi-species oak-hornbeam forest at Báb, SW Slovakia (former IBP Forest Research Site), a series of micrometeorological and ecophysiological measurements started in 1985. The aims of the work are to improve understanding of physiological processes (photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration) of adult trees and stand microclimate, to collect data for simulation of the canopy (stand) photosynthesis and for ecological synthesis of the functioning of the forest ecosystem. In this paper, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), air temperature (AT) and relative humidity (RH), wind speed (WS), and CO2 concentration ([CO2]) in and above the forest are characterized for the fully leaved season, using diurnal courses, vertical profiles and isodiagrams (isopleths). Approximately 50% of incident PAR was absorbed by the upper 4–5 m layer of leaves and only approximately 5% or less penetrated to the forest floor. Vertical gradients of AT and RH were generally low, but large differences in diurnal ranges of AT and RH were observed between vertical levels. The upper leaf canopy greatly reduced WS, and at a height of about 14 m above the ground it was close to zero. The highest diurnal [CO2] maximum and variations occurred at 1 m above the ground, and the lowest above the forest. In good light conditions in the forest, the entire leaf canopy (overstorey and understorey canopy) is a large sink of CO2. Summary The patch-clamp technique is used here to investigate the kinetics of Ca2+ block in single high-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channels. These channels are detected in the membrane surounding cytoplasmic drops fromChara australis, a membrane which originates from the tonoplast of the parent cell. The amplitudes and durations of single channel events are measured over a wide range of membrane potential (–300 to 200 mV). Ca2+ on either side of the channel reduces its K+ conductance and alters its ion-gating characteristics in a voltage-dependent manner. This Ca2+-induced attenuation of conductance is analyzed using the theory of diffusion-limited ion flow through pores. Interaction of external Ca2+ with the channel's ion-gating mechanism is examined in terms of a kinetic model for ion-gating that includes two voltage-dependent gating mechanisms. The kinetics of channel block by external Ca2+ indicates that (i) external Ca2+ binds at two sites, a superficial site and a deep site, located at 8 and 40% along the trans-pore potential difference, (ii) the external vestibule cannot be occupied by more than one Ca2+ or K+, and (iii) the kinetics of Ca2+ binding at the deep site is coupled with that of a voltage-dependent gate on the external side of the channel. Summary Polypeptides, synthesized from a mixture of amino acid amides by microwave heating during repeated hydration-dehydration cycles, showed hydrolase- and oxidoreductase-like catalytic activities. Poly(GAVDH), polypeptides synthesized from an equimolar mixture (each 0.1 M) of glycinamide,l-alaninamide,l-valinamide,l-aspartic acid -amide, andl-histidinamide, catalyzed the hydrolysis of PNPAc. The hydrolytic rate of PNPAc with poly(GAVDH) was the quadruple of that ofl-histidine alone. Though the kcat values of different resulting polypeptides were 103–106 times less than those of native hydrolases, the Km value of the polypeptides further containing phenylalanine residues was nearly equal to that of the esterase. This result indicates the presence of hydrophobic interaction between a substrate and the polypeptides. Resulting polypeptides also showed catalytic activity for the reduction of ferricyanide ion [Fe(CN)3–] with NADH. The polypeptides seemed to have a strong affinity for adenine nucleotides, because the reaction was inhibited by adenine derivatives such as NAD+ and AppA. Summary Amino acid amides effectively reacted to produce polypeptides in response to microwave heating during repeated hydration-dehydration cycles. The polypeptides, formed from a mixture of glycinamide, alaninamide, valinamide, and aspartic acid -amide, had molecular weights ranging from 1000 to 4000 daltons. Amino acids were incorporated into the polypeptides in proportion to the starting concentrations, with the exception of glycine whose incorporation was 1.5 times higher than that of the other amino acids. The polypeptides had some definite secondary structure, such as -helix and -sheet, in aqueous solution. This reaction provides not only a convenient method for abiotic peptide formation but also a convenient method for the chemical synthesis of peptides. 相似文献
