Switzerland is one of the few countries where high fertility rates have been reported in cattle hydatid cysts and where the cattle/dog cycle is the most important for the maintenance of Echinococcus granulosus. The developmental and morphological characteristics of E. granulosus of Swiss cattle origin were studied and compared with that of E. granulosus of domestic animal origin from Great Britain and Australia, countries where bovine hydatid cysts are usually sterile and cattle play little role in the life-cycle of the parasite. Adult E. granulosus of Swiss cattle origin differed markedly in its developmental characteristics compared to other isolates, particularly in its rate of maturation in dogs, producing eggs as early as 35 days post-infection. The morphology of E. granulosus of Swiss cattle origin was characteristic and it could be easily distinguished from other isolates of the parasite. Further, E. granulosus of Swiss cattle origin was found to closely resemble that occurring in cattle in South Africa where high fertility rates have also been reported in bovine hydatid cysts. It is concluded that a strain of E. granulosus exists which is adapted to cattle and that further studies are required to determine whether this strain warrants formal taxonomic status as the species E. ortleppi which was originally described for the parasite of South African cattle origin.  相似文献

Relationships of gymnomorph gastropods (Mollusca: gastropoda)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The gastropod families Onchidiidae, Vaginulidae, Rathouisiidae and Rhodopidae have been classified in a subclass Gymnomorpha, in which the genus Smeagol has been more recently included, on the basis of characters related with limacization which should not be used for classification at suprafamilial levels. When only characters not related with limacization are taken into account, the onchidiids are very similar to the ellobiids; Smeagol may be considered an otinid slug; vaginulids and rathouisiids form a monophyletic group of pulmonates, the Rathouisioidea. It is proposed to reject the Rhodopidae from the Pulmonata, and to include the onchidiids and the Rathouisioidea in the order Archeopulmonata, together with the ellobiids, the otinids and the Amphiboloidea.  相似文献

Ethylene production was determined in excised tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) root cultures of Meloidogyne javanica susceptible and resistant cultivars infected with M. javanica. Uninfected cultivars produced very low amounts of ethylene. Relatively high amounts of ethylene were produced by the infected susceptible cultivars. Peak production of 1.6 n moles * g root⁻¹ * h¹⁻ occurred between 9 and 16 days after inoculation (DAI). The period of high ethylene production coincided with that of rapid increase in gall weight. Low amounts of ethylene were also released by the infected resistant cultivar between 9 and 12 DAI, which follows the hypersensitivity reaction. Ethylene production in infected intact plants during the period of rapid gall growth was twice as much as in uninfected plants during the same time. Exposing excised root cultures to 0.5 or l0 ppm ethylene accelerated the rate of increase in gall weight of M. javanica infected roots. In contrast, overall root growth was inhibited by these treatments, compared to infected roots which were not exposed to ethylene.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that locomotor speed and endurance show a negative genetic correlation using a genetically variable laboratory strain of house mice (Hsd:ICR: Mus domesticus). A negative genetic correlation would qualify as an evolutionary “constraint,” because both aspects of locomotor performance are generally expected to be under positive directional selection in wild populations. We also tested whether speed or endurance showed any genetic correlation with body mass. For all traits, residuals from multiple regression equations were computed to remove effects of possible confounding variables such as age at testing, measurement block, observer, and sex. Estimates of quantitative genetic parameters were then obtained using Shaw's (1987) restricted maximum-likelihood programs, modified to account for our breeding design, which incorporated cross-fostering. Both speed and endurance were measured on two consecutive trial days, and both were repeatable. We initially analyzed performances on each trial day and the maximal value. For endurance, the three estimates of narrow-sense heritabilities ranged from 0.17 to 0.33 (full ADCE model), and some were statistically significantly different from zero using likelihood ratio tests. The heritability estimate for sprint speed measured on trial day 1 was 0.17, but negative for all other measures. Moreover, the additive genetic covariance between speeds measured on the two days was near zero, indicating that the two measures are to some extent different traits. The additive genetic covariance between speed on trial day 1 and any of the four measures of endurance was negative, large, and always statistically significant. None of the measures of speed or endurance was significantly genetically correlated with body mass. Thus, we predict that artificial selection for increased locomotor speed in these mice would result in a decrease in endurance, but no change in body mass. Such experiments could lead to a better understanding of the physiological mechanisms leading to trade-offs in aspects of locomotor abilities.  相似文献

Arbutus unedo is a sclerophyllous evergreen, characteristic of Mediterranean coastal scrub vegetation. In Italy, trees of A. unedo have been found close to natural CO2 vents where the mean atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is about 2200 μmol mol?1. Comparisons were made between trees growing in elevated and ambient CO2 concentrations to test for evidence of adaptation to long-term exposure to elevated CO2. Leaves formed at elevated CO2 have a lower stomatal density and stomatal index and higher specific leaf area than those formed at ambient CO2, but there was no change in carbon to nitrogen ratios of the leaf tissue. Stomatal conductance was lower at elevated CO2 during rapid growth in the spring. In mid-summer, under drought stress, stomatal closure of all leaves occurred and in the autumn, when stress was relieved, the conductance of leaves at both elevated and ambient CO2 increased. In the spring, the stomatal conductance of the new flush of leaves at ambient CO2 was higher than the leaves at elevated CO2, increasing instantaneous water use efficiency at elevated CO2. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements suggested that elevated CO2 provided some protection against photoinhibition in mid-summer. Analysis of A/Ci curves showed that there was no evidence of either upward or downward regulation of photosynthesis at elevated CO2. It is therefore anticipated that A. unedo will have higher growth rates as the ambient CO2 concentrations increase.  相似文献

This study investigates the behavioural and neural mechanisms involved in the oviposition behaviour of the turnip root fly,Delia floralis (Fallen). Behavioural studies showed that glucosinolates modulated the oviposition behaviour of the flies on artificial leaves as well as the number of eggs laid in the soil at the base of these leaves. Electrophysiological responses to glucosinolates were obtained from type A and type D sensilla on the prothoracic and mesothoracic tarsi, as well as from the long contact sensilla on the labellum. The neural responses from these sensilla were positively correlated with the oviposition behaviour of the flies and with the number of eggs laid. Of the eleven glucosinolates tested in the behavioural and electrophysiological tests, the flies were most responsive to glucobrassicanapin, gluconapin and glucobrassicin. The type D tarsal sensilla were more responsive to the glucosinolates than either the type A tarsal sensilla or the labellar sensilla. The structure-activity investigations showed that slight modifications to the chemical composition of the glucosinolates resulted in changes in neural activity.  相似文献

The distribution of stomata over both leaf surfaces may affect both the photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency of species, implying that species with different photosynthetic and water requirements may also have different stomatal distributions. A database containing data on the distribution of stomata on the leaves of 469 British plant species was used to look for relationships between stomatal distribution (including both location on the leaf and density) and both habitat and morphological variables. Statistical models were applied to the data that minimized any effects that phylogenetic constraints may have had on the data.
Hypostomaty is common in woody species, species which typically occur in shaded habitats and species with large or glabrous leaves. Amphistomaty, however, predominates in species which occur in non-shaded habitats, species with small, dissected or hairy leaves, and in annual species. Amphistomaty, therefore, tends to occur in species where CO2 may be limiting photosynthesis (unshaded environments), or where there are structures to prevent water loss from the leaf (e.g. hairs). Hypostomaty, however, occurs in slow-growing species (e.g. trees), species with leaves which have large boundary layers (large or entire leaves) and in species where CO2 is unlikely to limit photosynthesis (shaded habitats).  相似文献
