Sexually selected traits that are costly are predicted to be more condition dependent than nonsexually selected traits. Assuming resource limitation, increased allocation to a sexually selected trait may also come at a cost to other fitness components. To test these predictions, we varied adult food ration to manipulate condition in the colour dimorphic bug, Phymata americana. We compared the degree of condition dependence in a sexually selected trait expressed in males to a nonsexually selected trait expressed in males and females. We also evaluated the effects of condition on longevity of both sexes. We found that the expression of these colour pattern traits was strongly influenced by both diet and age. As expected, the strength of condition dependence was much more pronounced in the sexually selected, male-limited trait but the nonsexual trait also exhibited significant condition dependence in both sexes. The sexually selected male trait also exhibited a higher coefficient of phenotypic variation than the nonsexually selected trait in males and females. Diet had contrasting effects on male and female longevity; increased food availability had positive effects on female lifespan but these effects were not detected in males, suggesting that males allocated limited resources preferentially to sexually selected traits. These results are consistent with the expectation that optimal allocation to various fitness components differs between the sexes.  相似文献

Evolutionary significance of ontogenetic colour change in animals   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Ontogenetic colour changes are non-reversible colour changes associated with normal progressive development of an individual of a species. This paper provides the first review of the evolutionary significance of this phenomenon in animals. Proximate mechanisms and environmental cues are briefly discussed and a conceptual framework for understanding the ultimate reasons for ontogenetic colour change is established. Changes in size, vulnerability, reproductive status, habitat and metabolism are often associated with ontogenetic colour change and can aid in understanding its adaptive significance. Neutral or non-adaptive ontogenetic colour changes due to phylogenetic inertia and developmental constraints are also considered. Existing studies of ontogenetic colour changes in marine invertebrates, terrestrial invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals are discussed within this framework. A need is identified for more experimental tests of hypotheses for the significance of ontogenetic colour change.  相似文献

The onset of sexual behaviour in three age classes of male guppy Poecilia reticulata occurred in synchrony with the appearance of body colouration and anal fin differentiation but not with sperm production. There was also a positive correlation between sperm production and sexual behaviour in the two older age classes.  相似文献

Five qualitative and seven quantitative colouration and spotting pattern features were measured in 23 brown trout Salmo trutta populations and two hatchery stocks. Simultaneously, the LDH‐C1 *, a diagnostic locus fixed for *90 and *100 alleles in stocking and native populations from southern Europe, respectively, was analysed to classify the brown trout studied according to their origin: native, hatchery stock and hybrids. The three genotypes showed significant differences in the colouration and spotting features and a discriminant function analysis could correctly identify 79% of the individuals. The most discriminating variables were dorsal fin margin colour, number of opercular spots, presence of the preopercular mark and diameter of black spots. Given the low cost, ease and possibility of field identification of native fish, the results indicate great opportunities for the application of morphological‐based classification models on the conservation and management of native brown trout stocks.  相似文献

We explored Hamilton and Brown's autumn signalling hypothesis in mountain birch (Betula pubescens). As predicted by the hypothesis, early autumn colour change (i.e. high degree of autumn colouration in September) was negatively correlated with insect damage the following season. Furthermore, as expected, indices of physiological stress (i.e. leaf fluctuating asymmetry) and reproductive investment (i.e. catkin production) were positively correlated with insect damage the following season. Indirectly, we also found support for the idea that the proposed handicap signal (i.e. early autumn senescence) might be associated with an honesty ensuring cost in terms of lost primary production. Further work is, however, required to determine whether the link between autumn colours and insect damage observed in this study is causal.  相似文献

This field study describes the camouflage pattern repertoire, associated behaviours and speed of pattern change of Nassau groupers Epinephelus striatus at Little Cayman Island, British West Indies. Three basic camouflaged body patterns were observed under natural conditions and characterized quantitatively. The mean speed of pattern change across the entire body was 4·44 s (range = 0·97–9·87 s); the fastest pattern change as well as contrast change within a fixed pattern occurred within 1 s. Aside from apparent defensive camouflage, E. striatus used camouflage offensively to approach crustacean or fish prey, and three successful predation events were recorded. Although animal camouflage is a widespread tactic, dynamic camouflage is relatively uncommon and has been studied rarely in marine teleosts under natural conditions. The rapid changes observed in E. striatus suggest direct neural control of some skin colouration elements, and comparative studies of functional morphology and behaviour of colour change in other coral‐reef teleosts are likely to reveal new mechanisms and adaptations of dynamic colouration.  相似文献

The study of animal communication systems is an important step towards gaining greater understanding of the processes influencing diversification because signals often play an important role in mate choice and can lead to reproductive isolation. Signal evolution can be influenced by a diversity of factors such as biophysical constraints on the emitter, the signalling environment, or selection to avoid heterospecific matings. Furthermore, because signals can be costly to produce, trade‐offs may exist between different types of signals. Here, we apply phylogenetic comparative analyses to study the evolution of acoustic and visual signals in Asian barbets, a clade of non‐Passerine, forest‐dependent birds. Our results suggest that evolution of acoustic and visual signals in barbets is influenced by diverse factors, such as morphology and signalling environment, suggesting a potential effect of sensory drive. We found no trade‐offs between visual and acoustic signals. Quite to the contrary, more colourful species sing significantly longer songs. Song characteristics presented distinct patterns of evolution. Song frequency diverged early on and the rate of evolution of this trait appears to be constrained by body size. On the other hand, characteristics associated with length of the song presented evidence for more recent divergence. Finally, our results indicate that there is a spatial component to the evolution of visual signals, and that visual signals are more divergent between closely related taxa than acoustic signals. Hence, visual signals in these species could play a role in speciation or reinforcement of reproductive isolation following secondary contacts.  相似文献

Inter‐ and intraspecific variation in eggshell colouration has long fascinated evolutionary biologists. Among species, such variation may accomplish different functions, the most obvious of which is camouflage and background matching. Within species, it has been proposed that inter‐female variation in eggshell pigmentation patterns can reflect egg, maternal or paternal traits and hence may provide cues to conspecifics about egg, maternal or paternal phenotypic quality. However, the relationship between protoporphyrin‐based eggshell pigmentation and egg or maternal/paternal traits appears to be highly variable among species. We investigated patterns of intraspecific variation in Eurasian barn swallow Hirundo r. rustica protoporphyrin‐based eggshell pigmentation, and analysed its association with egg and clutch characteristics, maternal/paternal phenotypic traits and parental feeding effort. Eggshell pigmentation pattern significantly varied between breeding colonies, was significantly repeatable in first clutches laid by the same females in different years (intraclass correlation coefficient ranging between 0.56 and 0.63), but it was not significantly associated with egg traits, such as position in the laying sequence, egg mass, yolk testosterone concentration and antioxidant capacity. It was weakly or non‐significantly associated with female and male traits (sexual ornaments), but females laying darker (higher pigment intensity) first clutches had higher hatching success, suggesting that eggshell pigment intensity may predict fitness. Male nestling feeding effort was not predicted by eggshell pigmentation. In addition, females with darker breast plumage colouration (a melanin‐based trait related to fitness) laid highly protoporphyrin‐covered eggs, suggesting the presence of a previously unappreciated link between protoporphyrin biosynthesis and plumage melanisation. Moreover, the proportion of male offspring increased in clutches originating from highly protoporphyrin‐covered eggs, suggesting that parents could acquire visual cues about their future brood sex composition before egg hatching. Our results support the idea that intraspecific signalling via eggshell pigmentation is a species‐specific rather than a general feature of avian taxa.  相似文献

Aposematism is defined as the use of conspicuous colouration to warn predators that an individual is chemically or otherwise defended. Mechanisms that drive the evolution of aposematism are complex. Theoretical and empirical studies show that conspicuousness can be either positively or negatively correlated with toxicity as once aposematism is established, species can allocate resources into becoming more conspicuous and/or increase secondary defences. Here, we investigated the evolution of conspicuousness and toxicity in marine opisthobranchs. Conspicuousness of colour signals was assessed using spectral reflectance measurements and theoretical vision models from the perspective of two reef fish signal receivers. The relative toxicity of chemicals extracted from each opisthobranch species was then determined using toxicity assays. Using a phylogenetic comparative analysis, we found a significant correlation between conspicuousness and toxicity, indicating that conspicuousness acts as an honest signal when signifying level of defence and provides evidence for aposematism in opisthobranchs.  相似文献

Fox squirrels ( Sciurus niger ) in the south-eastern U.S. coastal plain differ from those in the rest of the species' range by having black heads with white nose and ears. Postcranially on the dorsum, they also show interindividual colour variation, ranging from all-light agouti to all-black non-agouti. I present results of experiments undertaken to test whether the evolution of these pigmentary features can be attributed to interactions with predators. Comparative static crypsis (when the squirrels are still) was tested by determining how well specimens of the squirrel morphs matched their backgrounds in terms of intensity (brightness) distributions and patch size. Comparative dynamic effects (when the squirrels are moving) were tested using captive red-tailed hawks ( Buteo jamaicensis ) and models of the fox squirrel morphs. Results indicated that morphs of coastal-plain fox squirrels with all-light backs are better static matches to unburned backgrounds than are the darker morphs with which they coexist. Against fire-blackened backgrounds, fox squirrel morphs with intermediate and all-black backs are better intensity matches than those with all-light backs, but the dark morphs are not better patch-length matches than light morphs. The superiority of dark morphs in intensity matching for a short time after a fire does not seem sufficient to account for their long-term maintenance. Hawks responded more slowly to moving fox squirrel models with intermediate amounts of black on the back than to all-light or all-dark morphs; this result suggests a possible factor that would favour retention of genes for dorsal blackness in the coastal-plain population. Patchy black and white heads appear to promote static crypsis of south-eastern fox squirrels, and hawks reacted more slowly to moving squirrel models with such colouration than to those with plain heads.  相似文献
