Few endoparasite species are pigmented. Acanthocephalans are an exception however, with several species being characterised by yellow to orange colouration both at the immature (cystacanth) and adult stages. However, the functional and adaptive significance of carotenoid-based colourations in acanthocephalans remains unclear. One possibility is that the carotenoid content of acanthocephalan cystacanths acts as a protective device against ultra-violet radiation (UVR) passing through the translucent cuticle of their crustacean hosts. Indeed, acanthocephalans often bring about behavioural changes in their aquatic intermediate hosts that can increase their exposure to light. Carotenoid composition and damage due to ultra-violet - B (UVB) radiation were investigated in three acanthocephalan parasite species that induce contrasting behavioural alterations in their common intermediate host, the crustacean amphipod Gammarus pulex. The fish acanthocephalans Pomphorhynchus laevis and Pomphorhynchus tereticollis both induce a positive phototaxis in gammarids, such that infected hosts spend more time out of shelters, while remaining benthic. The bird acanthocephalan Polymorphus minutus, on the other hand, induces a negative geotaxis, such that infected hosts typically swim close to the water surface, becoming more exposed to UV radiation. We show that differences in cystacanth colouration between acanthocephalan species directly reflect important differences in carotenoid content. The two fish parasites exhibit a contrasting pattern, with P. tereticollis harbouring a large diversity of carotenoid pigments, whereas P. laevis is characterised by a lower carotenoid content consisting mainly of lutein and astaxanthin. The highest carotenoid content is found in the bright orange P.minutus, with a predominance of esterified forms of astaxanthin. Exposure to UVB radiation revealed a higher susceptibility in P. laevis larvae compared with P. tereticollis and P. minutus, in terms of sublethality (decreased evagination rate) and of damage to DNA (increased cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers production). Although we found important and correlated interspecific differences in carotenoid composition and tolerance to high UVB radiation, our results do not fully support the hypothesis of adaptive carotenoid-based colourations in relation to UV protection. An alternative scenario for the evolution of carotenoid accumulation in acanthocephalan parasites is discussed.  相似文献

Black and tan animals have tan-coloured ventral body surfaces separated by sharp boundaries from black-coloured dorsal body surfaces. In the at mouse mutant, a retroviral 6 kb insertion located in the hair cycle-specific promoter of the murine Asip gene encoding agouti signalling protein causes the black and tan phenotype. In rabbits, three ASIP alleles are thought to exist, including an at allele causing a black and tan coat colour that closely resembles the mouse black and tan phenotype. The goal of our study was to identify the functional genetic variant causing the rabbit at allele. We performed a WGS-based comparative analysis of the ASIP gene in one black and tan and three wt agouti-coloured rabbits. The analysis identified 75 at-associated variants including an 11 kb deletion. The deletion is located in the region of the hair cycle-specific ASIP promoter and thus in a region homologous to the site of the retroviral insertion causing the at allele in mice. We observed perfect association of the genotypes at this deletion with the coat colour phenotype in 49 rabbits. The comparative analysis and the previous knowledge about the regulation of ASIP expression suggest that the 11 kb deletion is the most likely causative variant for the black and tan phenotype in rabbits.  相似文献

There have been many different and conflicting definitions of mimicry. Some of the definitions of mimicry include crypsis and others do not. Each definition includes different groups of phenomena and uses different criteria to distinguish mimetic from non-mimetic phenomena. The confusion is eliminated by a consideration of the criteria of all definitions. This shows that there are in fact three major criteria dividing six phenomona, rather than a single dichotomy between mimicry and crypsis (Table 2). The criteria are defined by the results of a mistake in discrimination between the model and mimìc: (a) the mistake does or does not depend upon relationship between mimic and background; (b) the mistake has or has no effect on the population dynamics or evolution of the model and (c) the mistake affects dynamics or evolution of one or of many models. The main reason for the contusion about mimicry and crypsis is that each author's definition includes differing and partially overlapping subsets of the six classes: crypsis; masquerade; Batesism; Müllerism; polymorphism and convergence.  相似文献

A simple and efficient installation for drying plants that is both rapid and preserves colour, and which works on the principle of autonomous thermal convection, is presented. The described apparatus offers significant advantages including: uniform heat distribution and short drying times; a system for applying pressure to prevent shrinkage, which uses polyurethane foam sheets and elastic straps; a compact, space-saving system suitable for field or laboratory applications; absorbent materials which can be re-used immediately; ability to run off differing power supplies (110/220 V) and to use infra-red lamps of varying specifications; low cost and ease of use.  相似文献

The considerable constraints that can be imposed on the evolution of primary metabolic pathways are apparent in the carbon pathway of photosynthesis in plants. Here, the unfortunate dual nature of the key enzyme, rubisco, to act as both a carboxylase and an oxygenase has led to a variety of adaptations in higher plants to maintain the efficiency of photosynthesis as a response to climatic stress.
Constraints on secondary metabolism are less apparent, although evolution can proceed by both loss of enzymic ability (as in the shikimate pathway) and by gain (as in the mevalonate pathway). One evolutionary trend in angiosperms is towards more highly toxic allelochemicals to provide protection from herbivory or microbial attack. One constraint on alkaloid evolution is the concomitant need to develop a metabolic pathway to recycle the nitrogen for other purposes. In the terpenoid series of compounds, there is a correlation between increasing oxygenation of a carbon skeleton and increasing toxicity. However, increasing oxygenation, especially peroxide formation, may produce a compound too unstable to act effectively against predators. In the evolution of blue flower colour, the synthesis of delphinidin 3-glucoside is only the first step in the production of a stable pigment complex capable of providing intense in vivo colouration. In the coevolution of plants and animals, some insects (e.g. the Monarch butterfly) have developed the ability to sequester and store plant toxins to avoid the cost of synthesis but here again there are clear constraints on the processes involved.  相似文献

In dogs and cats, unusual coat colour phenotypes may result from various phenomena, including chimerism. In the domestic cat, the tortoiseshell coat colour that combines red and non-red hairs is the most obvious way to identify chimeras in males. Several cases of tortoiseshell males have been reported, some of which were diagnosed as chimeras without any molecular confirmation. Here, we report the case of a female feline chimera identified thanks to its coat colour and confirmed through DNA profiling and a coat colour test. We ruled out the hypothesis of mosaicism and aneuploidy. All the data were consistent with a natural case of female chimerism.  相似文献

White spotting phenotypes in horses may be caused by developmental alterations impairing melanoblast differentiation, survival, migration and/or proliferation. Candidate genes for white‐spotting phenotypes in horses include EDNRB, KIT, MITF, PAX3 and TRPM1. We investigated a German Riding Pony with a sabino‐like phenotype involving extensive white spots on the body together with large white markings on the head and almost completely white legs. We obtained whole genome sequence data from this horse. The analysis revealed a heterozygous 1273‐bp deletion spanning parts of intron 2 and exon 3 of the equine KIT gene (Chr3: 79 579 925–79 581 197). We confirmed the breakpoints of the deletion by PCR and Sanger sequencing. Knowledge of the functional impact of similar KIT variants in horses and other species suggests that this deletion represents a plausible candidate causative variant for the white‐spotting phenotype. We propose the designation W28 for the mutant allele.  相似文献

The Beffa form of Simulium soubrense Vajime & Dunbar, a member of the S. sanctipauli sub-complex of the S. damnosum complex, was found breeding throughout rivers in the Togo-Benin Gap, as far north as 9 degrees 30'N. Its distribution changed with the season. In southern Togo there were seasonal fluctuations in the relative abundancies of the Beffa form and of S. damnosum/S.sirbanum. There was considerable temporal and regional variation in the frequencies of different colour morphs of adult flies. The flies in Benin tended to be darker. Infections with Onchocerca volvulus (Leuckart) appeared to be independent of the host's colour morph category. Larger flies harboured significantly more first stage Onchocerca larvae but no significant relations with fly size were found for second and third stage larvae.  相似文献

This study is an attempt to quantitatively determine variables of significance for predicting colour in small glacial lakes. Lake colour is an important variable in many lake ecological contexts. The data emanate from two extensive data-sets from Sweden, one of which concerns 1456 lakes, and the other 91 more well-suited lakes. Four year average values of lake colour were compared to catchment and morphometric parameters to help identify the processes which influence variability in colour between lakes. Various hypotheses concerning the factors regulating colour in lakes were formulated and tested. Various statistical tests were used to separate random influences from causal influences. Those “map parameters” with the most significant influence on colour were the theoretical lake water retention time, the percent of rocks, lakes and mires of the drainage area, the ratio between lake area and drainage area and the lake mean depth. Each model parameter provides only a limited explanation (statistical) of the variability in colour between lakes. The predictability of colour by these models can not be markedly improved by accounting for the distribution of the characteristics in the drainage area. The stability of the final model, which gives an r2-value of 0.74, has been tested with positive results. The model allows lake colour to be estimated from knowledge of “geological” characteristics of the lake and its drainage area. The variability between lakes from other factors, such as temperature, precipitation and/or contamination of acidifying substances and nutrients, may then be quantitatively differentiated from the impact of these “geological” factors.  相似文献

Considering the additional market value of pasture meat, many authentication methods were developed to discriminate it from meat produced in conventional systems. The visible reflectance spectroscopy technique has proved its efficiency under European conditions and breeds. The present study tested the reliability of this method to discriminate between pasture-fed (P) and stall-fed (S) lambs under North African conditions and investigated the effect of feeding system (FS) (P v. S) and breed (Barbarine; Queue Fine de l’Ouest; and Noire de Thibar) on weight and colour of perirenal, subcutaneous and caudal fat. A total of 18 P and 18 S lambs were used with 6 P and 6 S lambs for each breed. The colour and the reflectance spectrum of different fat tissues were measured. The FS affected weights of all fat tissues and all colour parameters of perirenal and subcutaneous fat (P ≤ 0.01); it almost affected redness and yellowness of caudal fat (P ≤ 0.05; P ≤ 0.01). In all adipose tissues, lightness was higher and both redness and yellowness were lower for S lambs than P lambs. The breed affected weight, lightness and redness of perirenal fat and weight and redness of subcutaneous fat with significant interaction with FS for subcutaneous fat data. To discriminate P lambs from S lambs, the reflectance spectrum of perirenal, subcutaneous and caudal fat at wavelengths between 450 and 510 nm (Method 1, M1) or at wavelengths between 400 and 700 nm using partial least squares discriminative analysis as a classification method (Method 2, M2) were used. M2 yielded to a higher proportion of correctly classified lambs compared with M1 (P = 0.001). The proportion of correctly classified lambs using M2 was 76.4, 75.0 and 80.0% for perirenal, subcutaneous and caudal fat for P lambs and 83.3, 76.4 and 100.0% for S lambs. Despite lower reliability in comparisons to European researches, this study confirmed the efficiency of visible reflectance spectroscopy technique applied on perirenal fat in feeding systems authentication under North African conditions and spotted the caudal fat as a new support for better classification of fat-tailed breeds.  相似文献
