In the context of competing risks, the cumulative incidence function is often used to summarize the cause-specific failure-time data. As an alternative to the proportional hazards model, the additive risk model is used to investigate covariate effects by specifying that the subject-specific hazard function is the sum of a baseline hazard function and a regression function of covariates. Based on such a formulation, we present an approach to constructing simultaneous confidence intervals for the cause-specific cumulative incidence function of patients with given risk factors. The use of video playback, digitally-modified video images, and animations is a potentially powerful tool for exploring the interactions between morphological and behavioral components of complex sexually selected traits. The utility of digitally-modified video was evaluated by the responses of females to male images in which either the behavioral components of display or the colors of ornamentation were manipulated. Females were presented with paired male images that varied only in the size of the orange or blue spot on the body (19.1% vs. 8.6%), courtship duration (7sec vs. 2.3sec), or courtship rate (3 displays min-1 vs. 1 display min-1). Females preferred male images with more vigorous courtship displays (both duration and rate) but did not discriminate between images differing in spot size. The results of the present study suggest that females discriminate more strongly between variation in male behavior than in their morphological attributes. The results of morphological manipulations should be interpreted with caution, however, because several factors could have contributed to the lack of female responses to color spot variation. Among them are lowered resolution of the computer image, which fails to capture the precision and complexity of the color pattern. Despite these potential difficulties, digitally-modified video promises to be a powerful method to study complex visual communication systems, where the function of and interaction between the various morphological and behavioral components is as yet poorly understood.  相似文献

Previous research has suggested that some children have a preference for sour tastes. The origin of this preference remains unclear. We investigated whether preference for sour tastes is related to a difference in rated sour intensity due to physiological properties of saliva, or to an overall preference for intense and new stimuli. Eighty-nine children 7-12 years old carried out a rank-order procedure for preference and category scale for perceived intensity for four gelatins (i.e. 0.0 M, 0.02 M, 0.08 M, 0.25 M added citric acid) and four yellow cards that differed in brightness. In addition, we measured their willingness to try a novel candy and their flow and buffering capacity of their saliva. Fifty-eight percent of the children tested preferred one of the two most sour gelatins. These children had a higher preference for the brightest color (P < 0.05) and were more likely to try the candy with the unknown flavor (P < 0.001) than children who did not prefer the most sour gelatins. Preference for sour taste was not related with differences in rated sour intensity, however those who preferred sour taste had a higher salivary flow (P < 0.05). These findings show that a substantial proportion of young children have a preference for extreme sour taste. This appears to be related to the willingness to try unknown foods and preference for intense visual stimuli. Further research is needed to investigate how these findings can be implemented in the promotion of sour-tasting food such as fruit.  相似文献

Melanocortin receptor 1 (MC1R) gene, one of the important candidate genes for coat color trait, was used to analyze the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in Chinese native pig breeds by PCR-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP). The study had also taken 3 imported pig breeds as control. The results showed that the three mutations G284A, T309C and T364C found in Chinese native pigs were consistent to the mutation found in the European Large Black individuals. However, 68CC or C492T and G728A were only found in the imported individuals, which were obviously different from the Chinese native pigs. Accordingly, we presumed that the coat colors of Chinese native pigs belonged to dominant black color system, which was completely distinct to that of imported pig breeds. Thus it was implied thatMC1R gene was not the principal factor affecting the coat color differences of Chinese native pig breeds, but could be used to trace the molecular evolution of pig breeds.  相似文献

Many living primates that feed on hard food have been observed to have thick-enameled molars. Among platyrrhine primates, members of the tribe Pitheciini (Cacajao, Chiropotes, and Pithecia) are the most specialized seed and nut predators, and Cebus apella also includes exceptionally hard foods in its diet. To examine the hypothesized relationship between thick enamel and hard-object feeding, we sectioned small samples of molars from the platyrrhine primates Aotus trivergatus, Ateles paniscus, Callicebus moloch, Cebus apella, Cacajao calvus, Chiropotes satanas, Pithecia monachus, and Pithecia pithecia. We measured relative enamel thickness and examined enamel microstructure, paying special attention to the development of prism decussation and its optical manifestation, Hunter-Schreger Bands (HSB). Cebus apella has thick enamel with well-defined but sinuous HSB overlain by a substantial layer of radial prisms. Aotus and Callicebus have thin enamel consisting primarily of radial enamel with no HSB, Ateles has thin enamel with moderately developed HSB and an outer layer of radial prisms, and the thin enamel of the pitheciins (Cacajao, Chiropotes, and Pithecia) has extremely well-defined HSB. Among platyrrhines, two groups that feed on hard objects process these hard foods in different ways. Cebus apella masticates hard and brittle seeds with its thick-enameled cheek teeth. Pitheciin sclerocarpic foragers open hard husks with their canines but chew relatively soft and pliable seeds with their molars. These results reveal that thick enamel per se is not a prerequisite for hard object feeding. The Miocene hominoid Kenyapithecus may have included hard objects in its diet, but its thick-enameled molars indicate that its feeding adaptations differed from those of the pitheciins. The morphology of both the anterior and posterior dentition, including enamel thickness and microstructure, should be taken into consideration when inferring the dietary regime of fossil species.  相似文献

The effects of exposure to a 50 Hz magnetic field (maximum of 41.7 to 43.6 mT) on the membrane protein structures of living HeLa cells were studied using attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy. One min of such exposure shifted peak absorbance of the amide I band to a smaller wave number, reduced peak absorbance of the amide II band, and increased absorbance at around 1600 cm(-1). These results suggest that exposure to the ELF magnetic field has reversible effects on the N-H inplane bending and C-N stretching vibrations of peptide linkages, and changes the secondary structures of alpha-helix and beta-sheet in cell membrane proteins.  相似文献

The significance of female color polymorphism in Odonata remains controversial despite many field studies. The importance of random factors (founder effects, genetic drift and migration) versus selective forces for the maintenance of this polymorphism is still discussed. In this study, we specifically test whether the female color polymorphism of Ischnura graellsii (Odonata, Coenagrionidae) is under selection in the wild. We compared the degree of genetic differentiation based on RAPD markers (assumed to be neutral) with the degree of differentiation based on color alleles. Weir and Cockerham's theta values showed a significant degree of population differentiation for both sets of loci (RAPD and color alleles) but the estimated degree of population differentiation (theta) was significantly greater for the set of RAPD loci. This result shows that some sort of selection contributes to the maintenance of similar color morph frequencies across the studied populations. Our results combined with those of previous field studies suggest that at least in some I. graellsii populations, density-dependent mechanisms might help to prevent the loss of this polymorphism but cannot explain the similarity in morph frequencies among populations.  相似文献

Crop-weed hybridization can potentially influence the evolutionary ecology of wild populations. Many crops are known to hybridize with wild relatives, but few studies have looked at the long-term persistence of crop genes in the wild. This study investigated one factor in the hybridization process in radish: differential pollinator visitation to wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum) vs. crop-wild F1 hybrids (R. sativus x R. raphanistrum). Wild genotypes had yellow flowers, a recessive single-locus trait, whereas hybrids always had white or pale pink flowers. In experimental arrays in northern Michigan, total pollinator visitation was significantly biased toward wild plants when the frequencies of wild and hybrid plants were equal. Syrphid flies, the most frequent visitors, preferred wild plants while bumble bees showed no preference. This pattern was also observed when hybrid plants were overrepresented in the array (12 hybrid:2 wild). In contrast, when hybrid plants were rare (2 hybrid:12 wild), neither morph was preferred by any pollinator group. Later in the summer, pollinators were also observed in a large experimental garden with nearly equal frequencies of wild and hybrid plants. Cabbage butterflies (Pieris rapae) strongly overvisited wild plants, while bumble bees showed a slight preference for hybrids. Taken together, these studies suggest that F1 hybrids may not be at a disadvantage with regard to pollinator visits when they occur at low frequencies or when bumble bees are frequent flower visitors. Thus, variation in the proportion of white-flowered morphs among wild radish populations could be influenced by different histories of crop-to-wild hybridization, as well as by variation in the composition of local pollinator taxa.  相似文献

The evolution of sexual dichromatism in tanagers (family Thraupidae) was studied from a phylogenetic perspective using a molecular-based phylogeny. Mapping patterns of sexual dimorphism in plumage onto the phylogeny reveals that changes in female plumage occur more frequently than changes in male plumage. Possible explanations for this pattern include sexual selection acting on female plumage and natural selection for background matching. The results of this study and other recent phylogenetic and comparative studies suggest that factors affecting female plumage are important in shaping patterns of sexual dimorphism.  相似文献
