We revisited a classic study of morphological variation in the oldfield mouse ( Peromyscus polionotus ) to estimate the strength of selection acting on pigmentation patterns and to identify the underlying genes. We measured 215 specimens collected by Francis Sumner in the 1920s from eight populations across a 155-km, environmentally variable transect from the white sands of Florida's Gulf coast to the dark, loamy soil of southeastern Alabama. Like Sumner, we found significant variation among populations: mice inhabiting coastal sand dunes had larger feet, longer tails, and lighter pigmentation than inland populations. Most striking, all seven pigmentation traits examined showed a sharp decrease in reflectance about 55 km from the coast, with most of the phenotypic change occurring over less than 10 km. The largest change in soil reflectance occurred just south of this break in pigmentation. Geographic analysis of microsatellite markers shows little interpopulation differentiation, so the abrupt change in pigmentation is not associated with recent secondary contact or reduced gene flow between adjacent populations. Using these genetic data, we estimated that the strength of selection needed to maintain the observed distribution of pigment traits ranged from 0.0004 to 21%, depending on the trait and model used. We also examined changes in allele frequency of SNPs in two pigmentation genes, Mc1r and Agouti , and show that mutations in the cis -regulatory region of Agouti may contribute to this cline in pigmentation. The concordance between environmental variation and pigmentation in the face of high levels of interpopulation gene flow strongly implies that natural selection is maintaining a steep cline in pigmentation and the genes underlying it. 相似文献

Model biopolymers are powerful tools to guide the interpretation of physical properties in complex systems. (Pro-Pro-Gly)(10), (PPG)(10), is a collagen-model peptide, whose structure is known at high resolution. Herein, Raman microscopy data of (PPG)(10) powders and single crystals are reported. The spectra interpretation leads to an accurate assignment of three well-resolved amide bands corresponding to the three peptide bonds (PP, PG and GP) present in the (PPG)(10) structure. These data together with the availability of torsional angles phi and psi derived from the high-resolution crystal structure, provide the opportunity to test the validity of theoretical equations for the calculation of non-canonical amide III bands and represent a reference for theoretical calculations of vibrational spectra and for polyproline II detection in complex proteins. Spectroscopic data do not support the indication of two distinct and equally populated up and down conformations of the pyrrolidine rings observed in the (PPG)(10) crystal structure. 相似文献

We evaluated the association of red coloration with senescence in sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) leaves by assessing differences in leaf retention strength and the progression of the abscission layer through the
vascular bundle of green, yellow, and red leaves of 14 mature open-grown trees in October 2002. Computer image analysis confirmed
visual categorization of leaves as predominantly green, yellow or red, and chemical quantification of leaf pigment concentrations
verified that leaf color reflected underlying differences in leaf biochemistry. Significantly lower chlorophyll concentrations
within red and yellow leaves indicated that senescence was more advanced in leaves from these color categories relative to
green leaves. Among leaf types, only red leaves contained high concentrations of anthocyanins. There were significant differences
in leaf retention capacity among color categories, with the petioles of green leaves being the most firmly attached to twigs,
followed by red and then yellow leaves. Microscopic analysis indicated that yellow leaves had the most advanced extension
of the abscission layer through the vasculature, with green and red leaves having significantly less abscission layer progression
than yellow. A more limited progression of the abscission layer through vascular bundles may be evidence of delayed leaf senescence
that could extend resorption of mobile leaf constituents. Together, results from this study suggest an association between

During a survey of Norwegian lakes, photographic records were made of lake color as reflected by a white Secchi disk positioned at half of the depth of extinction. The pictorial distinction between different lakes is documented in this article. The pictures recorded can readily be transferred to a color model [e.g., Commission Internationale de L’Éclairage (CIE)-Lab]; from there, numerical color parameter values such as hue (h*, the quality of color) and chroma (C*, the intensity of color) may be assigned to each record. There are, however, limitations and obstacles connected with the transformation of color values recorded by a CCD camera (or film digitizers) to absolute numerical values comparable between different cameras and systems. A single CCD camera may be useful for documenting lake color, but there are technical limitations restricting its use as a scientific instrument for quantitative purposes. 相似文献

Common displays such as CRT or LCD screens have hmlted capabilities in displaying most color spectra correctly. The main disadvantage of these devices is that they work with three primaries and the colors displayed are the mixture of these three colours. Consequently these devices can be confusing in testing human color identification, because the spectral distribution of the colors displayed is the combined spectrum of the three primaries. We have developed a new instrument for spectrally correct color vision measurement. This instrument uses light emitting diodes (LEDs) and is capable of producing all spectra of perceivable colors, thus with appropriate test methods this instrument can be a reliable and useful tool in testing human color vision and in verifying color vision correction. 相似文献

为了检测犬MC1R基因T105A基因座的多态性,并分析该多态性与犬毛色表型的相关性,抽取111只外科手术学实验用杂种犬血液并提取DNA,记录毛色表型。采用PCR-RFLP技术,对MC1R基因T105A基因座进行基因多态性分析,并对该基因座DNA进行克隆测序;用二元变量相关分析的统计学方法分析基因座多态性与毛色性状之间的相关性。经PCR-RFLP分析结果表明,T105A基因座序列具有多态性,表现为A、B二个等位基因和AA、AB及BB 3种基因型。A、B等位基因频率分别为72.97%和27.03%,基因杂合度(H)为0.39。基因型AA频率为55.86%,BB为9.91%,AB为34.23%。对T105A多态性片段DNA克隆测序后发现,MC1R基因在编码第105位氨基酸的密码子第一个碱基存在由G到A的单碱基突变,该突变导致第105位氨基酸发生由丙氨酸向苏氨酸的改变。统计分析结果表明MC1R基因T105A基因座的多态性与毛色性状不存在显著的相关性,这可能是由于外科手术学实验用犬是杂种犬,其遗传背景不同所致,尚须在纯种犬群体中进一步研究MC1R基因对毛色的影响。
Abstract: In order to detect the polymorphism of T105A in MC1R gene in dogs and to analyze the relationship between the genetic polymorphisms and phenotypes of dog coat color, the blood samples of 111 cross-breed dogs were taken and their genomic DNAs were extracted. The phenotypes of dog coat color were recorded. The T105A locus of MC1R gene in the canine was detected through the technology of PCR-RFLP. Furthermore, the polymorphic fragments at T105A were sequenced. The relationships between the polymorphism of T105A and coat color trait were analyzed by the statistical methods of bivarate correlation analysis. By the method of PCR-RFLP, the T105A polymorphism was found with two alleles A and B and three genotypes AA, AB and BB. The frequencies of two alleles were 72.97% and 27.03%, respectively. The heterozygosity of T105A locus was 0.39. The frequencies of three genotypes were 55.86%, 34.23% and 9.91%, respectively. According to the results of sequencing, one base change from G to A at the position 105 was found at T105A locus and it altered amino acid at the position 105 from alanine to threonine. According to the statistical analysis, no significant association between the polymorphism of MC1R gene and the coat color was found and the result may be due to the differences of genetic background. Further research on MC1R gene should be done in pure breed dogs. 相似文献

Adventitious roots of Primula acaulis Jacq. are characterized by broad cortex and narrow stele during the primary development. Secondary thickening of roots occurs
through limited cambial growth together with secondary dilatation growth of the persisting cortex. Close to the root tip,
at a distance of ca. 4 mm from the apex, Casparian bands (state I of endodermal development) within endodermal cells develop synchronously. During
late, asynchronous deposition of suberin lamellae (state II of endodermal development), a positional effect is clearly expressed
- suberization starts in the cells opposite to the phloem sectors of the vascular cylinder at a distance of 30 – 40 mm from
the root tip. The formation of secondary walls in endodermis (state III of endodermal development) correlates with the beginning
of secondary growth of the root at a distance of ca. 60 mm. Endodermis is the only cortical layer of primrose, where not only cell enlargement but also renewed cell division
participate in the secondary dilatation growth. The original endodermal cells additionally divide anticlinally only once.
Newly-formed radial walls acquire a typical endodermal character by forming Casparian bands and deposition of suberin lamellae.
A network of endodermal Casparian bands of equal density develops during the root thickening by the tangential expansion of
cells and by the formation of new radial walls with characteristic wall modifications. These data are important since little
attention has been paid up till now to the density of endodermal network as a generally significant structural and functional
trait of the root.

The mate choice and mating pattern of a benthic goby Rhinogobius sp. CB (cross band type) were investigated in the Kamo River, Shikoku, Japan. During the breeding season, gravid females assumed a nuptial color and either males or females initiated a courtship display. Males preferentially courted a female of similar size to lead her to his nest, whereas females courted more frequently when they encountered a large male. Eggs in any one nest were always at the same developmental stage. Sampling data of nesting males and females indicated that, in more than half the nests, males gathered more than one female before spawning. In some nests with eggs, two or three females had spent ovaries, indicating that the eggs were laid by multiple females within a short span of time. However, a comparison between the total number of eggs which females would spawn in one nest and the number of eggs actually deposited suggested that eggs were contributed by one female in most nests. This low level of polygyny in spite of multiple female availability is attributed to a limited available spawning area of the nest. 相似文献

Here we report the seed morphology and anatomy of some Nigerian pulses, an investigation that revealed a wide diversity of
characteristics in a small collection of seeds. Although these genera share common features, their anatomical differences
make it possible to generate a key for identification and classification. Sizes ranged from 5 to 7 x 5 x 3 mm forCajanus cajan up to 25 to 30 x 18 x 19 mm forCanavalia ensiformis. Seed colors were monochromatic black/brown to dichromatic eye/mottled (streaked), and surfaces were either smooth-glossy
or puckered. Forms varied from ellipsoid or oblong-ellipsoid to spheroid or reniform, and halos (hilar rims) were either complete
or incomplete. Lens shapes were spot, linear, broadly linear, or deltoid. The hila were elliptic to linear (or in-between),
with sizes ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 mm (Mucuna pruriens) up to 1.5 to 3.0 mm (Phaseolus vulgaris). Their positions could be completely covered, as inP. vulgaris, partially covered and raised above the seed surface (Vigna subterranea), or naked (without any funicular residue) arid level with the surface, as in Gensiformis (Tce1 ). The aril caps were collar-like inLablab purpureus or cushion-like, as inM. pruriens. Palisade cell sizes ranged from 80.7pm inGlycine max to 1733 μm inC. ensiformis (Tce1), and their shapes varied from a uniformly wall-thickened type (T1), to a bulbous-end type (T2), to one with a corrugated structure on the inner wall (T3). Although these anatomical variations exist, they may not warrant demarcation into sub-familiar or generic classifications.
