Water quality and algal populations in the Vaal River Barrage Reservoir have been monitored extensively for many decades, because of its importance as a water source for the most densely populated area in South Africa. Although Aulacoseira granulata (Ehrenberg) Simonsen is frequently found and at it times dominates algal assemblages in the Barrage, Aulacoseira ambigua (F.Meister) Tuji & D.M.Williams has never before been recorded at this locality. During a countrywide proficiency-testing scheme for algae counting, coordinated by Rand Water, spiral-shaped diatom colonies with distinctly curved cells were detected during May 2015. Upon investigation, it was found that the spiral colonies were Aulacoseira ambigua f. japonica, its presence in the fresh waters of South Africa being recorded for the first time. Since their first appearance during May 2015, colonies of Aulacoseira ambigua f. japonica have been constantly present in the surface waters of the Barrage. Their presence at this site can be linked to increasing eutrophication in the Vaal River, because the spiral form is known to prefer eutrophic conditions. Centric diatoms rarely form spiral colonies and there is some confusion in the literature as to the identity of this particular form, therefore in this paper we discuss this taxon, its nomenclature and ecological significance.  相似文献

Apis cerana and Apis mellifera normally display different strategies in cooling hive temperature, raising the question whether they would coordinate their efforts in to achieve stable thermoregulation in mixed colonies. The results show that the normal temperatures in the brood area in mixed colonies are more similar to those of pure A. cerana colonies than pure A. mellifera colonies. Under heat stress, A. cerana workers are more sensitive, and initiate fanning earlier than A. mellifera workers. In mixed colonies, the former become the main force for thermoregulation. When worker bees of both species were fanning together at the entrance, their own species-specific postures were adopted, but due to a significantly smaller number of A. mellifera workers engaged in fanning, the cooling efficiency of mixed colonies were closest to that of pure A. cerana colonies.  相似文献

Abstract

Nests of both common (Vespula vulgaris) and German wasps (V. germanica) sometimes overwinter in New Zealand. Three overwintering common wasp colonies were found in low-altitude honeydew beech forest; about 2% of the colonies initiated there in 1988 survived the winter. Wasp traffic rates from nests in Nelson city and a nation wide survey of wasp abundance, showed that more German wasp than common wasp workers were on the wing in winter and spring. German wasp colonies in Nelson city were more likely to overwinter than were common wasp colonies. Of the active German wasp colonies recorded in Nelson in January and February 1989, only two (4%) had previously overwintered, but these two nests accounted for 38% of all German wasp workers estimated to leave nests in the area. Had other overwintering colonies not been poisoned, overwintering colonies might have accounted for up to 11 % of nests and produced up to 64% of German wasp workers on the wing in January and February 1989.

Overwintering common wasp colonies did not produce queens or drones in their first year or second spring, but all 10 overwintering German wasp colonies examined produced sexuals at both times. German wasp queens produced in winter and spring may influence the number of colonies successfully initiated and affect the population dynamics of German wasps in New Zealand.  相似文献

Weak and small honey bee colonies are supposed to be more susceptible to infestations by the small hive beetle [Aethina tumida, small hive beetle (SHB)]. To test this, we established 24 nucleus colonies [12 with and 12 without previous SHB removal (= screening)]. Four weeks later, we compared beetle numbers and the occurrence of SHB reproduction to the corresponding full‐sized colonies. Full‐sized colonies with no screening were infested with significantly more SHBs than all other groups (mean ± standard deviation = 46.9 ± 26.7). Regardless of this, none of the full‐sized colonies showed damage or evidence of SHB reproduction. In contrast, five nucleus colonies collapsed and SHB larvae were found in an additional seven colonies. Our study demonstrates that SHB infestation levels which are harmless to full‐sized colonies may have a negative impact on small nucleus colonies.  相似文献

Traditionally, living organisms have often been classified into two main categories: unicellular and multicellular. In recent years, however, the boundary between these two groups has become less strict and clear than was previously presumed. Studies on the communities formed by unicellular microorganisms have revealed that various properties and processes so far mainly associated with metazoa are also important for the proper development, survival and behaviour of muticellular microbial populations. In this review, we present various examples of this, using a yeast colony as representative of a structured organized microbial community. Among other things, we will show how the differentiation of yeast cells within a colony can be important for the long-term survival of a community under conditions of nutrient shortage, how colony development and physiology can be influenced by the environment, and how a group of colonies can synchronize their developmental changes. In the last section, we introduce examples of molecular mechanisms that can participate in some aspects of the behaviour of yeast populations.  相似文献

To determine how the territorial strategies affect reproductive success of the polygynous ant Tetramorium tsushimae in Japan, we investigated territorial behaviors and reproductive success of their colonies in the field. We found that most of the reproductives were produced largely by the colonies that hold large territories. We investigated the nesting site temperature preferences of the colonies. Colonies strongly preferred high temperature areas of 27.5 to 30 °C as the rearing sites of reproductives. Growth rates of reproductives were positively correlated with rearing temperature as have been reported in other ant species. It was suggested that the colonies secure the high temperature zone to gain the high reproductive success. Furthermore, most of the rearing sites of reproductives were located along the border between neighboring territories. It was suggested that the colonies might compete for the high temperature zone to increase their reproductive success and that this results in the larger territories with multiple nest sites. Despite the fact that many animals live in groups, there is still no clear consensus about the ecological or evolutionary mechanisms underlying colonial living. Recently, research has suggested that colonies may be important as sources of social information. The ready availability of information from conspecifics allows animals to make better decisions about avoiding predators, reducing brood parasitism, migratory phenology, mate choice, habitat choice and foraging. These choices can play a large part in the development and maintenance of colonies. Here we review the types of information provided by colonial animals and examine the different ways in which decision‐making in colonies can be enhanced by social information. We discuss what roles information might take in the evolution, formation and maintenance of colonies. In the process, we illustrate that information use permeates all aspects of colonial living.  相似文献

Understanding the processes that shape artificial reef (AR) communities is critical if these are to be implemented for reef restoration or enhancement purposes. A study of the post-recruitment survival of coral colonies transplanted onto a 19-year-old AR and its adjacent natural reef (NR) was carried out at Eilat (Red Sea) in order to test the hypothesis that differences in benthic communities between the two reefs are derived from differential survival processes. Transplanted miniature coral colonies were monitored in situ on both reef types. It was found that the survival of those of the soft coral Dendronephthya hemprichi on the AR was nearly double that of those transplanted onto the NR. Similarly, survival of nubbins of the stony coral Pocillopora damicornis on the AR was over three-fold greater than on the NR. We suggest that the observed differential survival resulted from the unique suites of environmental conditions at the two habitats, mainly in terms of sedimentation load and current velocities, yet not from differences in substratum type (artificial vs. natural). The results demonstrate the role played by survival processes in shaping coral assemblages on ARs and NRs, and indicate that post-recruitment survival must be considered when designing ARs for restoration or enhancement purposes.  相似文献

This study was conducted to examine the phenomenon of task partitioning among associations of foundresses of the primitively eusocial wasp Belonogaster juncea juncea (F.). The time–activity budget for five main behavioral categories (foraging, building, feeding, inactivity, and reproduction) for each foundress belonging to trigynic associations was recorded using the instantaneous scanning technique. After ranking the individuals on the basis of agonistic encounters, data were submitted to a canonical discriminant analysis. The results show behavioral differences between individuals of each rank. The proportion of time allocated to foraging behavior is a good rank index. The females of the first rank spent less time on foraging behavior and significantly more time (13.6% of their time) on reproductive behavior than females of other ranks. The females of the second rank also spent less time on foraging behavior and showed a tendency toward building behavior. The females of the third rank spent significantly more time (77.28% of their time) on foraging behavior. The behavioral profile of each foundress was therefore determined by its rank on the dominance scale.  相似文献

The detection of very rare mRNA species in a complex RNA preparation by current RNA blotting techniques is not straightforward. To be able to determine the size of mRNA molecules representing 10(-6) to 10(-7) of the total mass of an RNA preparation, a quantitative comparison of the level of detection of denatured mRNA species electrophoretically separated on agarose gels, followed by transfer to either nitrocellulose or diazobenzyloxymethyl (DBM) paper and hybridization to specific cDNA probes was carried out. Different transfer procedures were analyzed. Optimal conditions have been found which allowed the detection of RNA bands containing as little as 5 pg of a specific sequence within a few days of autoradiography following hybridization with highly labeled [32P]cDNA probes. Using this procedure it was shown that the low amounts of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) mRNA sequences present in adult rat liver are mature AFP mRNA molecules.  相似文献
