Understanding the origins and introduction pathways of invasive species is a fundamental issue for invasion biology, which is necessary for predicting and preventing future invasion. Once an invasive species is established in a new location, this location could serve as a stepping‐stone for further invasions. However, such “stepping‐stone” effect has not been widely investigated. Using the published literature and records, we compiled the first found locations of 127 top invasive species in China. Our study showed that the most common landing spots of these invasive species were Hong Kong (22 species) and Taiwan (20 species), which accounted for one‐third of the invasive species in China. Our analysis revealed that the invasive species in mainland China were more likely to transport from Hong Kong than Macau, a neighboring region with a similar area and colonial history. Similarly, more invasive species were also first landed on Taiwan than Hainan, a nearby island sharing similar climate conditions. Together, our findings indicate that Hong Kong and Taiwan are the most important stepping‐stones for invasive species to the mainland of China and suggesting that the increasing trade exchange of China's coastal ports constitutes a potential risk for the spread of more invasive species. We suppose that they would be the future stepping‐stones for invasive species to the mainland of China and these coastal ports regions where improved biosecurity is needed now.  相似文献

Classical models of breeding habitat selection rarely deal with the question of information gathering for patch quality assessment. In this paper, we present two models comparing the fitness outcomes of behavioural strategies based on conspecific reproductive success as a cue to assess local environmental quality before selecting a new breeding habitat. The models deal with two phases of the life-cycle of a territorial migratory species: recruitment to a breeding population (model 1) and breeding site fidelity of subsequent breeding attempts (model 2). The first model shows that prospecting breeding patches before recruiting is the best strategy if the environment is predictable and contains a low proportion of good patches, even if it implies losing a breeding opportunity. The second model shows that dispersing after a breeding attempt according to the patch's breeding success rather than the individual's own success is the bests own success is the best strategy if the environment is patchy. These results underline the importance of studying the spatio-temporal variations of factors affecting reproductive success when considering the importance of habitat selection strategies based on conspecifics. Moreover, they allow the understanding of individual behaviour patterns observed in natural populations and their potential consequences at the metapopulation level.  相似文献

Daily searches of the plumage of 62 kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) chicks were carried out for 3 weeks to determine the attachment duration of the tick Ixodes uriae. All ticks recorded were nymphs and their mean duration of attachment was 5.2±1.7 days (n=93). Seventy-four per cent of the ticks survived to engorgement and were assumed to have fed successfully. The mean duration of attachment of successful ticks was 5.8±1.0 days (n=69), significantly longer than that of unsuccessful ticks (3.3±2.1 days, n=24). There was no difference in survival rates to engorgement between ticks attached to feathered and unfeathered parts of the body (78.3 and 79.2%, respectively), but the duration of attachment of successful ticks was significantly longer on unfeathered compared to feathered areas. There were no significant differences in the survival to engorgement or duration of attachment between ticks found on young (c.11 days) and old (>11 days) kittiwake nestlings. The attachment duration was not related to the total number of ticks found on the host or the number of ticks present in the immediate vicinity of the site of attachment. This work provides important data on the parameter of attachment durations of nymphal I. uriae on free-living kittiwakes; the data can be used for incorporation into the application of population modelling.  相似文献

Sandeels, especiallyAmmodytes marinus are a major component of the diet of many predatory fish, seabirds and seals. The industrial fishery for sandeels is now the largest of the North Sea fisheries. A sandeel fishery in the Shetland area began in 1974 but has recently declined. This change was accompanied by dramatic declines in the breeding success of certain seabirds, particularly Arctic terns and kittiwakes. Current information on seabirds and sandeels in the Shetland area is reviewed and areas where further research is needed, highlighted. The Shetland problem illustrates the difficulties of reconciling conservation and exploitation when fundamental ecological and behavioural knowledge is lacking, and also the need to obtain further information on the ecological impact of industrial fisheries.  相似文献

This essay contrasts early and later colonial collecting by anthropologists and museum scientists in Melanesia with the postcolonial collecting in which I participated in the 1980s under the auspices of the Australian Museum (1987). My contention is that museum collections made during early colonialism took place in a relatively hierarchical and androcentric context of moral difference. In subsequent phases of the colonial era, as well as in the ongoing postcolonial period, anthropological collecting sought, and continues to seek, egalitarian and gender inclusive dialogue with vendors; in part by drawing from local metaphors and idioms to express status inclusivity.  相似文献

We present a mathematical model of the growth of coral subject to unidirectional ocean currents using concepts of porous-media flow and nonlinear dynamics in chemical systems. Linear stability analysis of the system of equations predicts that the growth of solid (coral) structures will be aligned perpendicular to flow, propagating against flow direction. Length scales of spacing between structures are selected based on chemical reaction and flow rates. In the fully nonlinear system, autocatalysis in the chemical reaction accelerates growth. Numerical analysis reveals that the nonlinear growth creates sharp fronts of high solid fraction that, as predicted by the linear stability, advance against the predominating flow direction. The findings of regularly spaced growth areas oriented perpendicular to flow are qualitatively supported on both a colonial and a regional reef scale. One potential approach to combat the impacts of climate change is the expansion of renewable energy installations, leading to an increase in the number of wave‐powered marine renewable energy installations (MREIs). The consequences of increased use of these devices for birds are unknown. Here we describe the wave‐powered energy‐generating devices currently either operational or in development and review the potential threats and benefits of these to marine birds, their habitats and prey. Direct negative effects include risk of collision, disturbance, displacement and redirection during construction, operation and decommissioning. Above‐water collision is a particular concern with wind‐powered devices, but, because of their low profiles, the collision risk associated with wave‐powered devices is likely to be much lower. Conversely, wave devices also pose the novel threat of underwater collision. Wave‐energy‐generating devices may indirectly impact marine birds by altering oceanographic processes and food availability, with implications for trophic cascades. Through appropriate mitigation, wave‐powered MREIs offer the potential to enhance habitats. Direct positive effects may include provision of roosting sites, and indirect positive effects may include prey aggregation due to suitable substrates for sessile organisms or because they act as de facto protected areas. The cumulative effect of these could be the improvement and protection of foraging opportunities for marine birds. Recent studies have been critical of the methods used in the assessment of wind‐powered MREI impacts, which lack sufficient sample sizes, controls or pre‐development comparisons. Here we suggest solutions for the design of future studies into the effects of MREIs. Wave‐powered MREIs are certain to become part of the marine environment, but with appropriate planning, mitigation and monitoring they have the potential to offer benefits to marine birds in the future.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Recent studies indicate that young seabird chicks exposed to relatively short periods of elevated levels of plasma corticosterone may suffer lifelong cognitive impairment that is detrimental to their survivorship and fitness as adults. We examined the chronic effects of investigator disturbance on the baseline and acute stress‐induced levels of plasma corticosterone of Black‐legged Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) chicks in Chiniak Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska, in 2005. Kittiwake chicks were assigned to one of three disturbance treatments: (1) routine handling, (2) exposure to investigator presence, but not handled, and (3) neither handled nor exposed to investigator presence prior to sampling. At 12–15 d posthatching, blood samples were collected to determine baseline and stress‐induced concentrations of corticosterone. We found no significant differences in baseline or stress‐induced levels of corticosterone among the three disturbance treatments. Our results suggest that Black‐legged Kittiwake chicks do not perceive investigator presence as a stressor. However, investigators studying kittiwakes at other locations should proceed with caution because sampling protocols and environmental conditions may differ, potentially causing chicks to perceive disturbances differently as well.  相似文献

Colony formation is highly import ant for the competitive advantage of the cyanobacterium Microcystis over other phytoplankton species. The laboratory‐grown colonial Microcystis strains isolated from Lake Taihu (China) maintained colonial forms under the low light condition (10 μE m–2 s–1). The cell surface hydrophobicities of the Microcystis colonies were measured by cyanobacterial adherence to xylene in comparison with unicellular Microcystis strains. The cells of the tested colonial strains were all hydrophobic, while the cells of the tested unicellular strains were all hydrophilic. Incubation under the higher light condition (75 μE m–2 s–1) leaded to the significant decrease in the cell hydrophobicities of the colonial Microcystis and the transition from colonial forms to unicellular forms. These findings indicated that the cell hydrophobicity of Microcystis may play a role in cell‐cell adherence and colony formation. Phosphate‐limitation, nitrate‐limitation and pH did not affect cell hydrophobicities of colonial Microcystis. Treatment with proteolytic enzymes had no effect on the cell hydrophobicity, indicating that cell surface proteins did not contribute to high cell hydrophobicity. (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Eradications of kiore or Pacific rats (Rattus exulans) from islands around New Zealand have been followed by responses from resident species of coastal plants, invertebrates, reptiles and seabirds. These responses are compared with an invasion by ship rats (Rattus rattus), which devastated populations of invertebrates, birds and bats. Post-eradication responses only approximate the effects of invasions because recovery is limited to the residual pool of native species. Greater effects of kiore are indicated by adding incompatible species confined to rat-free locations. The extended list includes at least 15 species of invertebrates, two species of frogs, tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus), 11 species of lizards and 9 species of seabirds. The analyses indicate direct and indirect effects of kiore similar to those reported after ship rat invasions. This is despite indications from the literature that kiore are the least damaging of the three commensal rat species.  相似文献
