Summary The effect of soil water status on the critical phosphorus concentration (CPC) determined in apices and whole tops ofStylosanthes hamata cv. Verano was investigated in a glasshouse trial. The species was grown with six rates of P and three ranges of soil water potential and was harvested at 10 and 14 weeks after germination. The CPC of both whole tops and apices decliced between the two harvests. At the first harvest the CPC of both whole tops and apices increased as the soil water potential decreased but at the second harvest there was no effect of soil water potential on CPC. It is suggested that at the earlier harvest water stress was delaying physiological development, resulting in a CPC characteristic of chronologically younger tissue, but that by the second harvest the decline in CPC with age had ceased for all water treatments. 相似文献

The excavations at Christ Church, Spitalfields (1984-86) produced a sample of 968 human skeletons which were interred between 1729 and 1859. Of these, 387 were recovered in association with coffin plates stating name, age at death, and date of death. There are 138 adult females in the named sample and the obstetric histories of 94 have been reconstructed from historical documentation. Such variables as birth spacing, number of children, and age at first and last births are known for the majority of this sample. Any individual about whose history there is any doubt has been excluded from the analysis. A middle-class group, they were largely of high nutritional status and, by the standards of the day, lived in sanitary and comfortable conditions. Both males and females have a mean age at death of 56 years. The presence or absence, the typology, the severity, the width and the length of the preauricular sulcus, the presence or absence and the number of pits on the dorsal aspect of the pubic body, sulci along the anterior sacrum adjacent to the auricular facet, and the extension of the pubic tubercle were evaluated in relation to the obstetric histories of these females. Statistical analysis has demonstrated a relationship between the presence of pubic tubercle extension and parity status and between the degree of extension and the number of children borne (P < .02). Statistically there is no significant relationship (P > .05) between either the preauricular sulcus or pubic pitting and parity status. Sacral scarring is significantly associated (P < .05) with parity status, but as it was evident in only eight females it has little practical application. Sample sizes are small, and it must be considered that statistical evaluation of larger samples might detect associations between variables not demonstrated here. Neuronotypic Differentiation Results in Reduced Levels and Altered Distribution of Synaptophysin in PC 12 Cells 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract: Several synaptic vesicle proteins including synap-tophysin and p65/synaptotagmin are expressed by the pheochromocytoma cell line PC12. Stimulation of these cells with nerve growth factor for 7 days induces morphologic neuronotypic differentiation, but the levels of synaptophysin are markedly reduced. Stimulation with cyclic AMP analogs also produces neuronotypic differentiation of PC12 cells, and the degree of morphologic differentiation induced by these agents parallels their ability to effect reduction in synaptophysin levels. By contrast, levels of p65/synaptotagmin are increased following neuronotypic differentiation. The contrasting effects of neuronotypic differentiation on levels of synaptophysin and p65/synaptotagmin indicate potential differences in the regulation of these proteins in PC12 cells. Immunocytochemical labeling of undifferentiated PC12 cells reveals concentrations of synaptophysin in the perinuclear region. After neuronotypic differentiation, there is reduction in perinuclear labeling and concentration of label in swellings along PC12 cell processes. At the ultra-structural level, synaptophysin labeling is found on similar organelles in both undifferentiated and nerve growth factor-stimulated PC12 cells. Although the highest labeling densities were seen on small clear vesicles, specific labeling was also seen on dense core vesicles. The presence of synaptophysin on both small clear vesicles and dense core vesicles indicates potential functional similarities in these vesicle types. The changes in the levels and immunocytochemical distribution of synaptophysin after neuronotypic differentiation suggest possible functional heterogeneity among morphologically similar populations of small clear vesicles. 相似文献

There has been considerable interest in recent years in possible neurochemical abnormalities in Tourette's Syndrome (TS). In studies combining neuropsychological and neurochemical measurements, we have investigated the possible roles of trace amines in this disorder. Urinary levels of free -phenylethylamine (PEA) and plasma levels of its precursor amino acid phenylalanine were decreased in TS patients when compared to values in normal children. These urinary PEA levels in TS patients were inversely related to several scores from the Tourette's Syndrome Global Scale (TSGS). Further investigation of the group of subjects with low urinary PEA indicated that they also had low levels of MHPG, normetanephrine, 5-HT andm- andp-tyramine. Patients with low PEA were also compared on an extensive battery of neuropsychological measures and observed to perform significantly worse than TS patients with normal urinary PEA levels. Biochemical measurements also suggest a possible abnormality in tryptamine turnover in TS since urinary levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA; the acid metabolite of tryptamine) are significantly lower in TS patients than in normal controls. 相似文献

The extracellular and surface polysaccharides produced by Rhizobium species constitute a composite macromolecular interface between the bacterial cell and its environment. Several of these polysaccharides are involved in the complex series of interactions leading to the establishment of an effective Rhizobium-legume symbiosis. Extracellular heteropolysaccharides (EPSs) are found in culture supernatants, while capsular polysaccharides adhere to the cell surface. Cyclic (1–2)--d glucan is a periplasmic oligosaccharide that has also been found in the culture supernatants of some strains. The lipopolysaccharides (LPSs), which form part of the outer membrane and contain the O-somatic antigens, comprise the other major group of extracellular polysaccharides. Tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) and tumours from six patients with squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (SCCHN) were investigated. The six tumours all expressed major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I antigens both in vivo and as tumor cell lines grown in vitro. In addition, the cancer cells either overexpressed the tumour-suppressor gene product p53 or harboured human papilloma virus 16/18 (HPV). The TIL were expanded in vitro in the presence of interleukin-2, immobilised anti-CD3 mAb and soluble anti-CD28 mAb. Expanded TIL cultures contained both CD4+and CD8+T cells, but generally contained few CD56+CD3-cells of the natural killer (NK) phenotype. CD8+T cells dominated the individual TIL cultures from five of the six patients and showed significant autologous tumour cell lysis. In TIL cultures derived from four of these tumour-reactive TIL cultures, killing could be partially blocked by an anti-MHC class I mAb. TIL cultures reacting with autologous tumour cells also showed strong TCR/CD3-redirected cytotoxicity when assayed against hybridoma cells expressing anti-TCR/CD3 mAb as well as natural-killer(NK)-like activity. A number of TIL cultures devoid of autologous tumour cell lysis were capable of lysing the natural-killer(NK)-sensitive K562 cell line suggesting that the SCCHN cells themselves are resistant to NK-like lysis. In conclusion, TIL cultures from head and neck carcinomas contain T cells which, upon expansion in vitro, can lyse autologous tumour cells in a MHC-class-I-restricted fashion. Thus, the results of the present study document that carcinomas of the head and neck in some patients are infiltrated by cytotoxic T cell precursors potentially capable of rejecting the autologous tumour. 相似文献
