From 2000 to 2002, sediment contamination by Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn was analysed in the Pialassa Baiona salt marsh, which receives petrochemical wastewaters from the industrial district of Ravenna (Italy). The recent contamination levels were compared with data of previous studies carried out in 1982, in order to assess whether environmental policies and remedial measures reduced sediment pollution. Sedimentary profiles of Cu and Pb were homogeneous along the uppermost 0–10 cm horizon, which corresponded to the sedimentation in the last 30 years. Concentrations of Zn attained a peak (up to 800 mg kg−1 dry weight) in the 0–4 cm sediment horizon, which was assumed to correspond to the last 10–15 years. A wide-spread contamination by Hg was detected in the salt marsh as well as in the main channel with peaks up to 20–40 mg kg−1 dry weight. Nonetheless, recent sediments resulted less contaminated, since Hg discharge from industrial plants ceased about 20 years ago. Contamination levels by Hg values were two orders of magnitude higher than the international sediment quality standards. Cadmium, which was analysed for the first time in 2000–2002, attained a peak in the surface layers (1–2.5 mg kg−1 d.w.), with a progressive decline along the sediment column. Through comparison with pre-industrial values detected in the deeper sediment horizons (before 1920), Hg showed the highest enrichment factor, up to 300 times. Cd and Zn concentrations in recent sediments were from 2 to 10 times higher than background values. In terms of possible adverse effects, Hg posed the highest risk, and Cd and Zn were frequently above the recommended thresholds. 相似文献

Unionid (Mollusca: Unionidae) densities have declined dramatically throughout the Laurentian Great Lakes after the introduction of dreissenid mussels (Mollusca: Dreissenidae). Recent surveys in some Great Lake coastal wetlands have found abundant unionid populations, but the factors that reduce zebra mussels on unionids in these habitats are not well understood. In 2001–2002, we tested effects of predation and unionid burrowing on corbiculids, sphaeriids and dreissenids in a Great Lake coastal wetland in western Lake Erie. In one experiment, we reduced access by molluscivores using exclosures with two mesh sizes (1.3 cm × 1.3 cm; 5 cm × 10 cm) and sampled bivalves after 15 months. Small mesh exclosures had higher numbers of dreissenids, Corbicula fluminea and sphaeriids (54.9, 3.8, 22.6 individuals/m2, respectively) than large mesh exclosures (0.0, 1.13, 0.13 individuals/m2, respectively) or open controls (0.3, 1.0, 0.1 individuals/m2, respectively). Numbers of dreissenids on C. fluminea were higher in small mesh exclosures (3.8 dreissenids/Corbicula) than in large mesh exclosures (0.1 dreissenids/Corbicula) or cageless controls (0␣dreissenids/Corbicula). In a second experiment, we held two species of live unionids (Leptodea fragilis, Quadrula quadrula) and immobile Pyganodon grandis shells in exclosures (2.5 cm × 2.5 cm mesh) with either 5 cm, 10 cm, or 20 cm deep sediments and sampled bivalves after 2 months. There were fewer dreissenids on L. fragilis than P. grandis shells, but there was no difference in the number of dreissenids on Q. quadrula and P. grandis shells. Numbers of attached dreissenids were higher inside (189–494 dreissenids/unionid) than outside (8–11 dreissenids/unionid) exclosures, and densities of sphaeriid and C. fluminea clams were also higher inside (21.8, 4.7 individuals/m2, respectively) than outside (0.4, 0.9 individuals/m2, respectively) exclosures. Numbers of attached dreissenids were higher on unionids that could burrow below the sediments (20 cm depth) than unionids in shallow sediments (5 cm depth) for unexplained reasons. The Mar Menor is a sheltered and hypersaline lagoon, with salinity ranges between 38 and 51 psu. The lagoon is threatened by several pressures and in the last decades detrimental impact on the natural community structure and dynamics have increased. In the watershed, agricultural practices are rapidly evolving from extensive dry crop farming to intensively irrigated crops, with increasing loads of nutrient and pollutants to the lagoon. Hydrological conditions, nutrients and chlorophyll a concentrations were analysed in 1997 and 2002–2003 in a grid of 20 stations in the lagoon. Different time scales, from daily to inter-annual, were considered. In the considered periods, the dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) increased whilst phosphate decreased significantly. These contrasting patterns depended upon the increased agricultural loading for DIN and were due to the implementation of the wastewater works for phosphates. In 1997 and 2002, the highest nitrate concentrations were usually found on the west coast of the lagoon, close to the mouths of the main watercourses. In parallel, the lowest concentrations were detected at the inner coastline along “La Manga” sandy bar and “El Estacio” channel. Based on weekly data, correlations between chlorophyll a concentrations and environmental variables disagreed with traditional eutrophication models. Relationships between chlorophyll a and nutrients were negative, suggesting that in the short term phytoplankton controlled nutrient concentrations. Moreover, nitrate and phosphorous seemed to alternate as limiting factors. The relationships between chlorophyll a became positive when considering time lags and analysed at longer time scales (monthly or seasonal means), thus suggesting a very rapid response of primary producers to nutrient enrichment. A significant correlation between chlorophyll a concentration and fish larvae density was also found at all time scales analysed, suggesting a top-down control of the trophic web. 相似文献

Forest fragmentation facilitates the invasion of exotic species. This threat may be especially severe if forest fragments are surrounded by plantations of exotic species like Pinus radiata, an aggressive colonizer and shade-intolerant tree that has invaded successfully several native ecosystems of the southern hemisphere. In this study, we experimentally tested if the conditions of a successful seedling establishment P. radiata are fulfilled at the Coastal Maulino forest, an endemic fragmented forest of central Chile. Results demonstrated that seeds are dispersed into the native forests, however seedling establishment occurs only at the edges. We conclude that this exotic species is not invading native forests up to date. However, we suggest to conduct evaluations of seed rain and seedling establishment in the long term, in order to monitor the fate of this exotic species in fragmented native forest of Central Chile. 相似文献

Environmental and socioeconomic restructuring has had profound consequences for coastal communities in Canada. The decline of traditional resource-based industries—fisheries, forestry, and mining—and the emergence of new economic activities, such as tourism and aquaculture, compounded by concurrent shifts in social programs, have affected the health of environments, communities, and people. Drawing on research conducted as part of the interdisciplinary major collaborative research initiative Coasts Under Stress, we examined the implications of interactive restructuring for the health of people and communities on Canada’s east and west coasts. The research is guided by a socioecological framework that identifies the pathways from interactive restructuring through health determinants to health risks and health outcomes. The utility of the proposed framework is exemplified by a specific place-based example in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and a case-based example from coastal communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. A focus on interactive restructuring draws our attention to the many challenges associated with promoting health in a context of rapid and often accelerating environmental and institutional change that is relevant to other areas and contexts. 相似文献

Populations of obligately estuarine taxa are potentially small and isolated and may lack genetic variation and display regional differentiation as a result of drift and inbreeding. Hybridization with a wide‐ranging marine congener should introduce genetic variation and reduce the effects of inbreeding depression and genetic drift. However, high levels of hybridization can cause demographic and genetic swamping. In southeastern Australia hybridization occurs between obligately estuarine Black bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri) and migratory marine Yellowfin bream (Acanthopagrus australis). Here, we surveyed genetic variation at eight microsatellite loci and the mitochondrial control region of juvenile fish from five coastal lagoons (including temporal replication in two lagoons) (total n = 970) to determine the frequency and persistence of hybridization, and its likely consequence for the estuarine restricted A. butcheri. Of 688 juvenile fish genotyped 95% were either A. australis (347) or hybrids (309); only 5% (32) were A. butcheri. Most hybrids were later generation hybrids or A. butcheri backcrosses, which are likely multi‐generational residents within lagoons. Far greater proportions of hybrid juveniles were found within two lagoons that are generally closed to the ocean (>90% hybrid fish within generally closed lagoons vs. 12–27% in permanently or intermittently open lagoons). In both lagoons, this was consistent across multiple cohorts of fish [79–97% hybrid fish (n = 282)]. Hybridization and introgression represent a major threat to the persistence of A. butcheri and have yet to be investigated for large numbers of estuarine taxa. 相似文献

AIMS: This study was carried out to evaluate the presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and E. coli O157:H7 in shellfish from French coastal environments. METHODS AND RESULTS: Shellfish were collected in six growing areas or natural beds (B category) and nonfarming areas (D category) from July 2002 to August 2004. PCR detection of stx genes was performed on homogenized whole shellfish and digestive gland tissues enrichments. STEC strains were detected by colony DNA hybridization using a stx-specific gene probe and E. coli O157 strains were additionally searched by immunomagnetic separation with O157-specific magnetic beads. Stx genes were detected in 40 of 144 (27.8%) sample enrichments from mussels, oysters or cockles, 32 of 130 enrichments (24.6%) were from B-category areas and eight of 14 (57.1%) from the D-category area. Five strains carrying stx(1) or stx(1d) genes and one stx negative, eae and ehxA positive E. coli O157:H7 were isolated from six of 40 stx-positive enrichments. No relation was found between the total E. coli counts in shellfish and the presence of STEC strains in the samples. CONCLUSIONS: The STEC strains of different serotypes and stx types are present in shellfish from French coastal environments. It is the first isolation of STEC stx1d strains in France. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Shellfish collected in coastal environments can serve as a vehicle for STEC transmission. 相似文献

Aim To explore the relative effects of Quaternary climatic history vs. species-specific biological properties (high seed dispersability, high seed longevity, clonal growth) on phylogeographical structure in European Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean and Black Sea material of the coastal dune plant Calystegia soldanella (L.) R. Br.
Location Black Sea and European Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean coasts.
Methods Variation in amplified fragment length polymorphism was analysed at two different sampling levels. First, an entire-range sample from the Black Sea to the North Sea, including single individuals from sites evenly spread along this entire coast was analysed. Second, in a population-level sample, seven populations from the European Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean coasts were analysed.
Results Neither the entire-range nor the population-level sampling resulted in clear phylogeographical patterns. Instead, individuals from geographically distant areas were often genetically more similar to each other than individuals from the same area. Non-significant isolation-by-distance was found for both sampling approaches, and comparatively low levels of intrapopulational genetic variation were observed.
Main conclusions The lack of phylogeographical structure in C. soldanella , in comparison with the clear phylogeographical patterns observed in other coastal plant species analysed previously, is postulated to be the result of the specific biology of C. soldanella . The combination of high seed longevity, high dispersability of seeds by sea water and clonal growth and probable high clone age are likely to be responsible for the observed absence of phylogeographical structure. This implies that extreme biological properties such as those shown by C. soldanella can either erase or prevent the formation of historical patterns of genetic variation. 相似文献

Woody debris is an important habitat component, particularly in streams that lack other hard substrates. Research suggests
a general relationship between increasing invertebrate density, diversity, and taxa richness with increasing wood decay in
lotic systems, with some authors observing invertebrate taxonomic succession as decay proceeds. We designed a field experiment
using colonization of known-aged woody debris in two streams to examine patterns in invertebrate colonization, density, diversity,
richness, and succession. After aging woody debris 0–6 weeks in laboratory tanks and then placing the debris in the two subtropical,
coastal plain streams for five additional weeks, we did not detect any statistical relationship between invertebrate density,
diversity, evenness, richness, or life-history pattern with increasing woody debris decay, nor did we detect any relationships
between the colonization or abundance of individual taxa and the decompositional state of the wood. In this paper, we propose
two non-exclusive explanations for these trends based on opportunistic colonization and evolutionary filtering. Despite the
apparent unimportance of decompositional state, woody debris still supported many taxa and remains an important habitat component.
Our research further supports the importance of flooding and maintenance of intact riparian and floodplain forests to the
woody debris dynamics and macroinvertebrates in coastal plain lotic systems. 相似文献

In contrast to cold and eurythermal waters, benthic communities of warm brooks in temperate regions have been inadequately
studied. In order to investigate the effects of water thermal regime on the benthic communities of warm waters and their relationships
with those of cold and eurythermic ones, the macrozoobenthos was studied at eight sites in the Toplica River, and at four
sites in its tributary, the Termalni brook. Investigations were carried out seasonally from April 2000 to January 2001. Warm
waters of the Termalni brook were characterized by specific macrozoobenthos assemblages that exhibited significant differences
to the populations of eurythermal and cold waters of the Toplica River. The dominant taxa in the macrozoobenthos community
of warm waters were mainly Gastropoda species. Moreover, benthic communities of warm waters were characterized by lower diversity
and greater biomass in comparison with those of cold and eurythermal waters. The gradient of average annual temperatures represented
the main ecological factor influencing changes of diversity and biomass along the course of the investigated Termalni brook.
Inflow of warm waters at site T6 lead to a decrease in macrozoobenthos abundance and changes in qualitative and quantitative composition of the benthocoenosis
of a highland stream, but did not significantly alter diversity. 相似文献
