The impact of the presence of us humans as well as our activities to nature has led to over-exploitation of natural resources and to dramatic changes in land-use including the use of artificial fertilizers contributes to the deterioration of the natural environment. The population density, industrial processes and the use of fertilizers are the main causes for the eutrophication of river systems, estuaries and seas. There are several ways to determine the actual nutrient levels back to the 1950s, back to 1900 or even back to 1800. Available data indicate that the natural background concentrations of nutrients (pristine conditions or the period prior to the widespread use of artificial fertilizers and detergents) were dramatically lower than today. Available time series on chemical and biological data collected from different parts of the world show the (sometimes tremendous) increase in nutrient levels and the related productivity. The same time series, however, also show the decreases in values when measures were taken to reduce the nutrient emissions. Investigations of different systems all over the world show that nearly every system responses differently to eutrophication. Especially physical boundary conditions play an important role in the manifestation of the ultimate effect of local eutrophication. Apart from the physical boundary conditions also the transformation and retention of nutrients in estuarine and coastal systems contribute to system specific responses. Depending on all these different conditions, site specific responses with even site specific problems may occur. The challenge of this millennium is to really reach a balance between nature and mankind including its population size. A beneficial step in this discussion is assessing criteria to reduce eutrophication back to a level acceptable to both humans and nature.  相似文献

Morphological reconstruction and biogeochemical characterisation of the lagoon of Comacchio (Italy) were carried out in order to provide recommendations for the recovery, conservation and sustainable management of the Fattibello-Spavola coastal lagoon ecosystem. Samples were taken in two seasons: July 1997 and November 1998. The irregular morphology of the Fattibello lagoon affects depositional processes and seawater exchange (tidal currents). Several depressions retain part of the dense water of the saline wedge; these stagnant waters became sinks for fine terrigenous and organic matter. The basin is already extensively supplied with N and P compounds from land. The inflow is demonstrated by the large quantity of organic C, N and organic and inorganic P compounds in the superficial sediment. The ratios between the various forms of macronutrients indicate that the organic matter is primarily of autochthonous origin, with relatively low C/N ratios (8.4±0.6 and 8.1±0.6 in July and November, respectively). Shallow areas were almost always oxygenated by tidal currents and thus rich in organisms, with a predominance of molluscs and Ficopomatus enigmaticus. However, the trophic equilibrium of the ecosystem was affected by the accumulation of organic matter in the depressions, favoured by the increased hydrodynamics during the autumn. These accumulations generate high oxygen consumption and release considerable quantities of nutrients into the water column, with the risk of serious dystrophy throughout the basin during the summer. Local dredging and an improvement of the circulation have been suggested and carried out to contain these processes. Reclamation measures in the longer term were proposed.  相似文献

Changes in the rate of primary production as an indication of trophic status of aquatic ecosystems have been one of the major indicators of their health. Despite different approaches been devised for evaluating this process, few are useful for comparison and generalization of their results. The coastal zone ecosystems of Yucatan (SE Mexico) exhibit hydrological variability closely associated with the groundwater discharges, which are the only freshwater sources in the coastal ecosystems. In order to learn about the trophic status of karstic tropical coastal lagoons, three of them (Celestun, Chelem and Dzilam) located in Yucatan (SE, Mexico) were monitored for inorganic nutrients, Chl-a, phytoplankton and macrophyte productivity. The nitrate concentrations suggest that the trophic status was influenced by fresh water springs, being meso-eutrophic in Celestun, oligotrophic in Chelem, and mesotrophic in Dzilam. In the case of ammonium ions, the three lagoons were mesotrophic, indicating that processes such as remineralization play an important role in the trophic dynamic of these shallow ecosystems. According to phosphate concentrations, Celestun and Dzilam were mesotrophic, and Chelem was oligotrophic. External inputs of phosphate and bioturbation by waterfowl may be responsible of these differences. Primary productivity at Celestun was greater than at Chelem and Dzilam lagoons and the contribution by seagrasses was significant in all three. It is found that indices based on nutrient concentration and phytoplankton biomass are useful as an indication of trophic status in groundwater influenced coastal lagoons. Moreover, estimations on the total system productivity, and the relative contribution of each primary producer, is a holistic approach useful for understanding trophic dynamic in shallow tropical coastal ecosystems.  相似文献

Imboassica lagoon is an urban coastal lagoon located in the municipality of Macaé (RJ), which has been exposed to a process of artificial eutrophication through the inflow of untreated sewage, as well as artificial openings of the sandbar that separates it from the ocean, provoking drastic modifications in this ecosystem. The sampling for the analysis of the community of macroinvertebrates associated with Charopyceae (Chara angolensis e C. fibrosa) were performed between October 1995 and October 1997, with a total of 9 samplings at two sampling stations: one located in the innermost area of the lagoon and another at the mouth of the main sewage channel, close to the sandbar. Throughout this period, four artificial sandbar-opening events were recorded, resulting in changes in the biomass of the macroalgae and in the densities of the macroinvertebrate populations. Through the analysis of the density of organisms per square meter, and density of organisms per 100 g dry weight of Chara, it was established that the biomass of the macroalgae has a direct influence on the density of the associated macrofauna. The greater development of the periphytic community in the area close to the inflow of sewage allows for the development of a community of macroinvertebrates with high densities, composed mainly of scraping organisms, such as the mollusc Heleobia australis (Hidrobiidae).  相似文献

Estimates of instantaneous mortality rate of mark-recaptured chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta juveniles in coastal waters of the Sea of Japan ranged from 0·033 to 0·268 day−1 in the 14–43 days after release. High mortality rate may have been caused by size-selective mortality or poor ability to adapt to the coastal environment inhabited by chum salmon juveniles soon after release. The results indicated that large-scale mark-recapture experiments are useful for estimating mortality during the early sea life that is considered to be a critical period for Pacific salmon.  相似文献

Both interspecific and intraspecific inter-lagoon differences, between the central Mediterranean coastal lakes of Fogliano and Caprolace, in the trophic patterns of the examined species Diplodus annularis, Diplodus puntazza, Diplodus sargus, Lithognathus mormyrus and Sparus aurata were revealed by means of correspondence analysis. The most evident inter-lagoon qualitative and quantitative diet changes were observed in S. aurata . Feeding similarities among species were synthesized for each lake by means of multidimensional scaling. Trophic interrelationships among sparid fish were different in the two lagoons, as a direct consequence of diet variations in each species. Such differences are interpreted as possibly reflecting differences in the overall structure of the benthic communities. Different feeding models could be identified, each corresponding to a peculiar adaptive strategy for the consumption of lagoon benthic resources. The use of benthophagous fish feeding habits as a tool for the monitoring of the structure and the dynamics of coastal lagoon communities is discussed.  相似文献

Natural ecosystems globally are often subject to multiple human disturbances that are difficult to restore. A restoration experiment was done in an urban fragment of native coastal sage scrub vegetation in Riverside, California that has been subject to frequent fire, high anthropogenic nitrogen deposition, and invasion by Mediterranean annual weeds. Hand cultivation and grass‐specific herbicide were both successful in controlling exotic annual grasses and promoting establishment of seeded coastal sage scrub vegetation. There was no native seedbank left at this site after some 30 years of conversion to annual grassland, and the only native plants that germinated were the seeded shrubs, with the exception of one native summer annual. The city green‐waste mulch used in this study (C:N of 39:1) caused short‐term N immobilization but did not result in decreased grass density or increased native shrub establishment. Seeding native shrubs was successful in a wet year in this Mediterranean‐type climate but was unsuccessful in a dry year. An accidental spring fire did not burn first‐year shrubs, although adjacent plots dominated by annual grass did burn. The shrubs continued to exclude exotic grasses into the second growing season, suggesting that successful shrub establishment may reduce the frequency of the fire return interval.  相似文献

Restoration of reclaimed marshes in the United Kingdom, referred to as managed realignment, is both a scientific and a political issue. A cross‐party House of Commons report to Government stressed that provision of long‐term sustainable coastal defenses must start with the premise that “coasts need space” and that government must work to increase public awareness, scientific knowledge, and political will to facilitate such a retreat from the almost sacrosanct existing shoreline. Government, in turn, has agreed with the basis of the report but is aware of conflicting interests, not least the European legislation, which has designated large areas of reclaimed marshes as Special Areas of Conservation that cannot legally be restored to their former tidal processes. Against this background, it is essential that scientific research provides convincing arguments for the necessity for managed realignment, the location, extent, and type of marshlands that need to be restored to provide sustainable flood defenses, maintain and enhance conservation status, and ensure a healthy functioning estuarine system. We examine the political and scientific issues involved, discuss model predictions and field experiments into realignment techniques, and outline the preliminary results of such experiments showing the evolution of restored intertidal wetlands in the United Kingdom.  相似文献
