Aim Patterns of fire regimes across Australia exhibit biogeographic variation in response to four processes. Variations in area burned and fire frequency result from differences in the rates of ‘switching’ of biomass growth, availability to burn, fire weather and ignition. Therefore differing processes limit fire (i.e. the lowest rate of switching) in differing ecosystems. Current and future trends in fire frequency were explored on this basis. Location Case studies of forests (cool temperate to tropical) and woodlands (temperate to arid) were examined. These represent a broad range of Australian biomes and current fire regimes. Methods Information on the four processes was applied to each case study and the potential minimum length of interfire interval was predicted and compared to current trends. The potential effects of global change on the processes were then assessed and future trends in fire regimes were predicted. Results Variations in fire regimes are primarily related to fluctuations in available moisture and dominance by either woody or herbaceous plant cover. Fire in woodland communities (dry climates) is limited by growth of herbaceous fuels (biomass), whereas in forests (wet climates) limitation is by fuel moisture (availability to burn) and fire weather. Increasing dryness in woodland communities will decrease potential fire frequency, while the opposite applies in forests. In the tropics, both forms of limitation are weak due to the annual wet/dry climate. Future change may therefore be constrained. Main conclusions Increasing dryness may diminish fire activity over much of Australia (dominance of dry woodlands), though increases may occur in temperate forests. Elevated CO2 effects may confound or reinforce these trends. The prognosis for the future fire regime in Australia is therefore uncertain. 相似文献

Both structural and thermodynamic studies are necessary to understand the ribosome assembly. An initial step was made in studying the interaction between a 16S rRNA fragment and S7, a key protein in assembling the prokaryotic ribosome small subunit. The apparent dissociation constant was obtained for complexes of recombinant Escherichia coliandThermus thermophilusS7 with a fragment of the 3" domain of the E. coli16S rRNA. Both proteins showed high rRNA-binding activity, which was not observed earlier. The interaction of melittin and a truncated analogue of melittin with an immobilised phosphatidylcholine monolayer has been studied using dynamic elution techniques. The melittin analogue (21Q analogue) had five amino acids omitted from the C-terminal region of melittin. The influence of temperature and methanol concentration on the binding affinity of the two peptides was determined and compared to the binding behaviour of two control molecules N-acetyltryptophanamide and diphenylalanine. Both peptides exhibited non-linear dependence of affinity on % methanol at different temperatures, while N-acetyltryptophanamide and diphenylalanine exhibited linear behaviour. In addition, both melittin and the 21Q analogue exhibited significant band broadening under a range of experimental conditions, which was not evident for N-acetyltryptophanamide and diphenylalanine. As melittin is known to adopt a significant degree of -helical conformation in the presence of lipids, the results suggest that melittin and the 21Q analogue adopt different conformations and orientations upon binding to the immobilised phosphatidylcholine surface. Overall, the results of this study demonstrate that the immobilised lipid monolayer provides a powerful system to rapidly assess the affinity of peptides for different lipid surfaces. 相似文献

This work investigated the biodegradation capabilitiesof indigenous microorganisms exposed to differentcombinations of aromatic hydrocarbons. Considerablediversity was found in the catabolic specificity of 55strains. Toluene was the most commonly degradedcompound, followed by p-xylene, m-xyleneand ethylbenzene. Strains capable of degradingo-xylene and benzene, which were theleast-frequently-degraded compounds, exhibited broaderbiodegradation capabilities. Kappa statistics showeda significant correlation between the abilities todegrade toluene and ethylbenzene, p-xylene andm-xylene, and p-xylene and o-xylene. The ability to degrade naphthalene was correlated tothe ability to degrade other alkylbenzenes, but notbenzene. In addition, the inability to degradebenzene was correlated to the inability to degradeo-xylene. Factorial analysis of variance showedthat biodegradation capabilities were generallybroader when aromatic hydrocarbons were fed asmixtures than when fed separately. Beneficialsubstrate interactions included enhanced degradationof benzene, p-xylene, and naphthalene whentoluene was present, and enhanced degradation ofnaphthalene by ethylbenzene. Such heuristicrelationships may be useful to predict biodegradationpatterns when bacteria are exposed to differentaromatic hydrocarbon mixtures. 相似文献

Dimerization of the erythropoietin receptor has long been accepted as the singular step in its mechanism of activation. Recent studies have revealed a regulator process for activation that is dependent on the actual configuration of the receptor-ligand dimer assembly. This aspect of the receptor subunit assembly appears to extend to the unliganded receptor, which can dimerize on the cell surface and diminish any spontaneous background signaling in the absence of ligand. This self-recognition, as well as the multiple ligand binding capabilities of the receptor binding site, is consistent with an emerging theme of plasticity in protein-protein and ligand-receptor interactions. 相似文献

Four mutations that reduce waxbloom in Brassica oleracea L. were examined for their effects on predation, mobility, and adhesion to the plant surface by the general predator Hippodamia convergens (Guérin-Menéville) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). The mutations reduce waxbloom to different degrees, but all produce a glossy phenotype. Plants tested were inbred lines, near isogenic lines, or segregating F2 populations, depending on the mutation. In an experiment on caged leaves, predation of Plutella xylostella L. larvae by H. convergens adult females was significantly greater on glossy types as compared with normal-wax or wild-type counterparts. Although the trend was the same for each mutation, individual comparisons between glossy and normal-wax lines or segregants were only significant for two of them, those producing mutant alleles gla and gld. Individual H. convergens were observed to spend more time walking on leaf edges and less time walking on leaf surfaces of normal-wax plants than glossy plants. Hippodamia convergens also obtained better adhesion to the surfaces of glossy plants than to normal-wax plants when tested using a centrifugal device. Two of the mutations produced similarly strong effects on predation, behaviour, and adhesion by H. convergens. These two are the same previously determined by us to provide the strongest similar effects on another generalist predator, Chrysoperla plorabunda (Fitch). The results indicate that waxbloom variation in nature could affect herbivore populations through its effects on generalist predators. 相似文献

Predation by Chrysoperla plorabunda (Fitch) (Chrysopidae) first instars on Plutella xylostella (L.) (Plutellidae) neonates was measured on nine Brassica oleracea L. types with different surface wax crystal morphology. Forty-eight-hour survival of P. xylostella caged on leaves was significantly reduced by C. plorabunda on plants expressing glossy mutations that reduce surface waxbloom, but not on plants with normal waxbloom. During 5-min observations, C. plorabunda spent more time walking and less time scrambling (moving the legs with no locomotion) on glossy types than on the normal-wax types. Adhesive force produced by C. plorabunda on plant surfaces was 20 to 200-fold greater on glossy types than on normal-wax types. All the glossy types provided an advantage to C. plorabunda over normal-wax types by increasing the force of attachment to the leaf suface by the larvae, which in turn increased time allocated to walking, leading to greater predation of P. xylostella larvae. Among glossy and normal wax types together, attachment force and time allocated to walking were significantly correlated with predation by C. plorabunda. Within glossy or normal-wax types, however, these correlations were not significant. Neither time allocated to walking, nor attachment to the leaf surface was a predictor of predation by C. plorabunda within glossy or normal-wax types. Although diverse mechanisms therefore contribute to differences in predation, the results show that reduction in waxbloom can substantially affect the mobility and effectiveness of this generalist predator. 相似文献
