The external gills of anuran amphibians are transient structures, covered by the development of the operculum and regressing soon afterwards. Their functional role has been regarded as equivocal. However, detailed morphological analysis has been limited. Analysis of 21 species from six families using scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed diversity at the anatomical and cellular levels in extent and length of gill filaments, numbers of surface ciliated cells, width of water‐blood barrier distance, and evidence of gill motility. The most highly developed external gills were found in species with delayed hatching, such as Phyllomedusa trinitatis, or in species in which hatchlings hang from the surface film of temporary ponds, such as Phrynohyas venulosa in which gills added 26–38% to body surface area. In one family, the bufonids, all four species examined had poorly developed gills, but in other families where we examined several species, the hylids and leptodactylids, there was considerable diversity of external gills, suggesting flexible adaptation to incubation and hatching environment. Since the discovery that Legionella pneumophila can survive and grow within free-living amoebae, there has been an increasing number of microbial species shown to have similar relationships. These include many bacterial species, fungi, other protozoa (e.g. Cryptosporidium) and viruses. Among bacteria, mycobacteria are of particular importance because of their role in human and animal infections. This review will consider the progress made in understanding the relationships between mycobacteria and amoebae, and their consequences in terms of ecology and epidemiology.  相似文献

1. Omnivory is an important interaction that has been the centre of numerous theoretical and empirical studies in recent years. Most of these studies examine the conditions necessary for coexistence between an omnivore and an intermediate consumer. Trait variation in ecological interactions (competition and predator tolerance) among intermediate consumers has not been considered in previous empirical studies despite the evidence that variation in species-specific traits can have important community-level effects. 2. I conducted a multifactorial microcosm experiment using species from the Sarracenia purpurea phytotelmata community, organisms that inhabit the water collected within its modified leaves. The basal trophic level consisted of bacterial decomposers, the second trophic level (intermediate consumers) consisted of protozoa and rotifers, and the third trophic level (omnivore) were larvae of the pitcher plant mosquito Wyeomyia smithii. Trophic level number (1, 2 and 3), resources (low and high), omnivore density (low and high) and intermediate consumer (monoculture of five protozoa and rotifers) identity were manipulated. Abundance of the basal trophic level, intermediate consumers, and growth of the omnivore were measured, as well as time to extinction (intermediate consumers) and time to pupation (mosquito larvae). 3. The presence of different intermediate consumers affected both bacteria abundance and omnivore growth. At high resource levels, Poteriochromonas, Colpidium and Habrotrocha rosa reduced bacteria densities greater than omnivore reduction of bacteria. Mosquito larvae did not pupate at low resource levels except when Poteriochromonas and Colopoda were present as intermediate consumers. Communities with H. rosa were the only ones consistent with the prediction that omnivores should exclude intermediate consumers at high resources. 4. These results had mixed support for predictions from omnivory food web theory. Intermediate consumers responded and affected this community differently under different community structures and resource levels. Consequently, variation in species-specific traits can have important population- and community-level effects and needs to be considered in food webs with omnivory.  相似文献

Our aim was to investigate the non-target effects on soil micro-organisms in agricultural environments caused by chemical control agents (CCAs) and microbial biocontrol agents (mBCAs), including the recovery from these effects. This was a desk study in which quantifiable endpoints, such as numbers of colony forming units (CFU), were derived from a series of studies and the combined data then analysed with a meta-regression analysis. Three analyses of the same dataset were performed. The first analysis, which was performed at the level of the CCAs and mBCAs in general, revealed that the effects of CCAs differed significantly from those of mBCAs. The second analysis, which included the type of non-target group (bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, and protozoa) as additional input, revealed that mBCAs have greater effects than CCAs on fungi at study initiation, that CCAs had greater effects than mBCAs on bacteria and protozoa and that when effects were measured, recovery occurred within 100 days post-treatment initiation. The final analysis, which included the type of CCA (fungicide, insecticide, herbicide) or mBCA (antagonist) as additional input, revealed that (1) antagonists had a greater effect on fungi than insecticides and fungicides, (2) insecticides and to a lesser extent fungicides had a larger effect on bacteria than fungicides and antagonists, and (3) recovery of the CFU occurred within 100 days for all types of pesticides, mBCAs as well as CCAs, and for all non-target groups. The findings are discussed in view of the regulatory context of admittance of mBCAs to the market.  相似文献

Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba dispar are two microscopically indistinguishable amoebae living in the human colon. The former is a pathogen, whereas the latter is a nonpathogenic commensal. Using a model system of in vitro cocultures and PCR detection of the Entamoeba species, we found that the nonpathogenic species can rapidly outgrow the pathogen in xenic cultures.  相似文献

Methanogenesis in rice field soils starts soon after flooding while potentially competing processes like reduction of sulphate and iron take place. Early methanogenesis is mainly driven by hydrogen, while later in the season acetate tends to become more important. Anaerobic ciliates are abundant during this period, and their endosymbionts use hydrogen produced by the ciliates to reduce carbon dioxide to methane. These endosymbiotic methanogens are protected from the competition for substrates with other bacteria that may control methanogenesis outside the protozoan cells. Thus, we focussed on early methanogenesis and on the potential contribution from ciliates and their endosymbionts. Only ciliates of the genus Metopus were found to harbour methanogens, as identified by the F(420)-fluorescence of the endosymbionts. We followed the population dynamics of the ciliates with time, and calculated the ratio of symbiotic methane production to overall methanogenesis. Symbiotic methane production was calculated from the species-specific numbers of methanogenic endosymbionts times the cell-specific methane production of the symbionts. According to this calculation, the symbionts' contribution to overall methane production was only 6.4% at the beginning and decreased with time. In a second experiment, colchicine and cycloheximide were used to inhibit all eukaryotes, comparing the remaining methane production rate to a control without inhibitors. In the inhibition experiment, the contribution from symbionts decreased from 40% to 6% during the first days after flooding, and dropped to near zero within 2 weeks. However, nearly all methane produced from H(2)/CO(2) could be attributed to the ciliates' symbionts between days 5 and 10 after flooding. Both experiments showed that the contribution of methanogenic symbionts to overall methane production is a transient phenomenon, restricted to the first 2 weeks.  相似文献

Protozoan movement and feeding regimes in soil biofilms were observed with inverted microscopes and Utermohl plankton counting chambers (4 mm deep). In a new use for these counting chambers, the three-dimensional appearance of a soil pore network can be simulated using long working distance objectives (40x). Protozoa were often associated with soil surfaces and penetrated soil crevices of less than 3 microm in diameter by either distorting their body outlines or with slender pseudopodia of less than 2 microm at the tips. Many ciliates repeatedly collided with soil particles and released attached bacteria into the soil solution for subsequent predation.  相似文献
