Two phototoxic plants of the Asteraceae family were studied in relation to species of phytophagous insects for which they are hosts:Argyrotaenia velutinana Wlk. feeding onChrysanthemum leucanthemum L. andChlorochlamys chloroleucaria (Guenée) colonizingRudbeckia hirta L. The toxicity of these two plants is related to the presence of acetylenes and thiophenes that induce a light-mediated production of deleterious singlet oxygen and other free radicals (phototoxicity). Results showed that females ofA. velutinana laid their eggs preferentially in the shade and the larvae adopted hiding behaviors, such as bending of ligulate corollas and silk spinning to build opaque shelters. By avoiding direct exposure to the sun, both behaviors may reduce phototoxicity associated with ingested plant materials. Furthermore, larvae ofC. chloroleucaria demonstrated a preference in the field for pollen, which constitutes a nonphototoxic tissue of their host plant. Experimental alterations of these specific behaviors induced important biological consequences for larvae of both insects such as mortality or reduction of larval growth rate. These results reinforce the idea that behavior may constitute an efficient adaptation to avoid phototoxicity.  相似文献

Wide-band tracheids are a specialized tracheid type in which an annular or helical secondary wall projects deeply into the cell lumen. They are short, wide and spindle-shaped, and their bandlike secondary walls cover little of the primary wall, leaving most of it available for water diffusion. Wide-band tracheids appear to store and conduct water while preventing the spread of embolisms. They may be the most abundant tracheary element in the xylem, but they are always accompanied by at least a few vessels. Typically, fibers are absent wherever wide-band tracheids are present. Wide-band tracheids occur in the primary and secondary xylem of succulent stems, leaves and roots in genera of all three subfamilies of Cactaceae but were not found in the relictual genusPereskia, which lacks succulent tissues. In the large subfamily Cactoideae, wide-band tracheids occur only in derived members, and wide-band tracheids of North American Cactoideae are narrower and are aligned in a more orderly radial pattern than those of South American Cactoideae. Wide-band tracheids probably arose at least three times in Cactaceae.  相似文献

Tetrahymena was grown at up to 260 atm to see if the bilayer-ordering effect of pressure increased the proportion of unsaturated fatty acids in the membrane lipids. Both whole cells and microsomes showed no such change in their fatty acid composition. The most striking effect was seen in the former which showed a pressure-dependent increase in the proportion of C16:0 in relation to C16:Δ9. Bacillus stearothermophilus cells vary the lipid fatty acid composition of cytoplasmic membranes with growth temperature. Spin label studies of such membranes have been interpreted to indicate lateral lipid phase separations at the growth temperature. We have now used freeze-fracture electron microscopy to confirm the spin label studies. Freeze-fracture faces of protoplasts indicate slight but distinct protein aggregation at the growth temperature. Aggregation increases rapidly with decreasing quench temperature in wild-type cells. In contrast we were unable to demonstrate extended protein segregation in membranes of a temperature-sensitive mutant that contains more than 58% branched fatty acids. Storage of protoplasts for prolonged times below the lipid phase transition results in the appearance of corrugated fracture faces with 300- to 500-Å repeat patterns, although this organism does not synthesize lecithins.  相似文献

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb. cv S.170) plants were grown in environments differing only in temperature: 6/4, 16/14 or 21/19°. The content of total and individual sugars and amino acids in leaf laminae and roots did not relate closely to the hardiness of the organ. The unsaturation of lipid fatty acids alone was clearly unrelated to hardiness because the difference in unsaturation was greater in the neutral lipids, glycolipids and phospholipids from roots than from leaves but only the latter differed in hardiness. Total amounts of lipids could have been related to hardiness but phospholipids and glycolipids in the roots were not. At least some of these changes may be related to adaptation of growth to temperature.  相似文献

Barleygrass ( Hordeum leporinum ) from Australian low-P (phosphorus) soils and commercial barley ( H. vulgare ) with high fertilizer requirements were grown in solution culture at 3 levels of P supply. The high-P-adapted barley produced more biomass at all levels of P supply and was more responsive to added P in terms of rate of tillering, rate of leaf production, final leaf size, and therefore total shoot weight compared to barleygrass. In both species root: shoot ratio decreased in response to improved tissue P status, even at P levels where total biomass did not respond to P supply. Removal of endosperm reserves of barley reduced total biomass to a greater extent than it altered phosphate absorption rate, thus increasing tissue P status and making plants less responsive to added P. Similarly, barleygrass had a slower growth rate but a comparable P absorption rate to that of barley. Thus barleygrass also accumulated tissue P and was unresponsive to added P. All phosphorus chemical fractions increased in response to improved tissue P status, but to differing extents (inorganic-P > nucleic acid-P > lipid-P > ester-P), suggesting that all P fractions (particularly inorganic P) serve, in part, a storage function. Both barleygrass and barley without endosperm had higher concentrations of all P fractions (particularly inorganic P) than did unaltered barley, but this was due entirely to their higher P status (due to slow growth) rather than to any major difference in P metabolism between species. We conclude that slow growth is more important than interspecific differences in P metabolism, P absorption, or efficiency of P utilization in explaining the success of barleygrass and other low-P-adapted species on infertile soils.  相似文献

Summary In sexually mature male sticklebacks, the renal tubular cells are transformed from ion reabsorbing to mucus secreting cells and in these fish concomitant changes take place in the glomeruli.The present study compares glomerular structure of immature males in fresh water (controls) to those of mature males in fresh water and to immature male sticklebacks in seawater. Glomerular structure is markedly altered in the latter two groups and the changes are similar to a large extent. In these two groups the renal capsules and glomeruli are smaller and the lumina of the glomerular capillaries decrease in diameter, while the number and size of the endothelial fenestrations are reduced. Mesangial cells proliferate and the mesangial matrix greatly expands in both the centrolobular region and the subendothelial space around the capillaries. The secretory activity of the podocytes is enhanced and is responsible for the observed increase in thickness of the outer layer of the basal lamina, the lamina rara externa. The area covered by the filtration slit membranes is reduced, probably as a consequence of fusion of the pedicels of the podocytes. The permeability characteristics of the glomerular filtration barrier for macromolecules, as studied with ferritin injections, remain unaltered. However, the observed differences point to a reduction of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) during maturation in male sticklebacks, as well as during adaptation of sticklebacks to seawater. This conclusion is in line with physiological evidence.  相似文献
