Biosynthesis of azetidine-2-carboxylic acid from methionine in Nicotiana tabacum

The administration of dl-methionine-[1¹⁴C] to Nicotia tabacum resulted in the formation of radioactive azetidine-2-carboxylic acid (isolated by dilution) which was specifically labelled on its carboxyl group. This result and other evidence strongly indicates that this imino acid is a normal component of tobacco.

Induction of mutants in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by guanidine hydrochloride II. Conditions that prevent induction

The induction of ⁻ “petite” mutants by guanidine hydrochloride (GuHCl) is inhibited in several conditions. Anaerobiosis inhibited the induction either with or without cell multiplication. Both nalidixic acid (NA) and cycloheximide (CH) inhibited the induction of mutants. On the other hand, chloramphenicol (CAP) produced a dual effect: at low concentration it stimulated, at high concentration it inhibited, the induction. The effect of these different inhibitors on the transformation of ⁺ mother cells into ⁻ by GuHCl is discussed.     

Isoperoxidases from tobacco tissue cultures

Two anodic isoperoxidases (A₁ and A₂) from tobacco tissue culture W-38 and two cathodic isoperoxidases (C₃ and C₄) from tobacco suspension culture WR-132 have been separated and characterized. Molecular weights for each of the isoperoxidases have been determined by two different methods. Only C₄ contained a carbohydrate component. The substrate specificity and the pH optima for the four enzymes with each of five substrates were determined.

New organic bases from amazonian Banisteriopsis caapi

Three new bases were isolated from Banisteriopsis caapi; they are harmine N-oxide, harmic acid methyl ester (methyl 7-methoxy-β-carboline 1-carboxylate) and harmalinic acid (7-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-β-carboline 1-carboxylic acid).     

Stimulation of sugar transport in rat diaphragm by 8-bromoguanosine 3′,5′-monophosphate

The cyclic GMP derivative, 8-bromo cyclic GMP, increases the uptake of D-xylose and of 2-deoxy D-glucose into intact rat diaphragm incubated in vitro. 8-Bromo cyclic GMP does not stimulate the incorporation of [¹⁴C] glucose into glycogen in the diaphragm, or the uptake of α-amino isobutyric acid into this tissue. The effect of 8-bromo cyclic GMP on the diaphragm is consistent with the hypothesis that cyclic GMP plays a role in the regulation of sugar transport in muscle.
