There is a demand in the livestock industry for alternative assessments of feed efficiency. Infrared thermography was tested for predicting heat production, methane production and for the detection of physiological events (e.g. heat increment of feeding) in dairy cattle. Multiple body locations were infrared scanned concomitantly with the measurement of the animals’ gaseous exchange. Infrared thermography can be successfully applied for assessing heat and methane production, through the analysis of feet temperature and temperature difference between left and right flanks, respectively. This technology is also useful for assessing physiological responses to milking and feeding. 相似文献

Abstract Most insect pheromones comprise multicomponent blends of geometric or optical isomers, and one major question is how insects produce species‐specific ratios of components for successful reproductive isolation. Key enzymes suggested to be involved in pheromone biosynthesis are acetyl‐coenzyme A carboxylase and fatty acyl synthetase, chain‐shortening enzymes, desaturases, elongases, reductases, oxidases, and alcohol acetyl transferases. The female pheromone composition of the Egyptian armyworm Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) is highly dependent on the origin of the strain. In this review, we present a summary of the different reported pheromone compositions of the moth, including from our recent studies on this subject, as well as the biosynthetic routes to the different components and the molecular approaches involved. In addition, the key role played in the proposed biosynthetic pathways by a number of important biosynthetic enzymes, such as chain shortening enzymes, desaturases and alcohol acetyl transferases, is outlined, as well as the latest developments on the inhibition of these enzymes. 相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in the andromonoecious Euphorbia nicaeensis: effects of gender and inflorescence development 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In andromonoecious taxa with separate floral types along the inflorescence, architectural or plastic effects can simulate floral sexual dimorphism. Both the primary and secondary sexual characteristics of the cyathia of the protogynous andromonoecious species Euphorbia nicaeensis were analysed according to their sex and arrangement on the inflorescence. METHODS: The production of male and hermaphrodite cyathia at each inflorescence level was surveyed in two natural populations. The longevity, size, pollen production and viability, and nectar secretion of both types of cyathia were checked between inflorescence levels and between sexes at the only level at which they occur together. This sampling method makes it possible to know whether differences between cyathia types are based on sex or are attributable to inflorescence development. KEY RESULTS: Male cyathia were produced predominantly at the first and second inflorescence levels, whereas at levels 3-5, the cyathia were almost exclusively hermaphrodite. Viable pollen production by male cyathia at the second inflorescence level was higher than that of hermaphrodite cyathia at the third level but, when males and hermaphrodites at the same level were compared, their pollen production was similar. Male and hermaphrodite cyathia were similar in size, irrespective of the inflorescence level, although the exclusively hermaphrodite cyathia of the last level were smaller. Both cyathium types produced similar amounts of sugar. However, male cyathia produced nectar during their whole lifespans, whereas hermaphrodites produced it exclusively during their male phase. Moreover, the nectary activity of male cyathia started earlier in the day than that of hermaphrodites. CONCLUSIONS: An apparent floral dimorphism exists in the primary sexual characteristics of Euphorbia nicaeensis because differences in pollen production between cyathium types are due to theirs positions. Similarly, differences affecting most secondary sexual characteristics are only apparent between the two cyathium types. However, E. nicaeensis shows a true but slight floral dimorphism in some of the secondary sex characters related to nectar secretion. The lack of nectar production by the female phase of the hermaphrodite cyathia of E. nicaeensis indicates that this is a deceit-pollinated species. 相似文献

The private game industry has grown across Africa since the mid-20th century. While considerable research has documented wildlife
production on commercial land in many eastern and southern African countries, few studies have focused specifically on the
integration of livestock and game production in Namibia and Zambia. This paper reports a survey of 43 commercial conservancy
members in Namibia and 23 game farmers in Zambia conducted between September 2004 and June 2005. The survey was based on inductive
sampling theory and queried farmers on how they have integrated wildlife production into their management practices. Farmers
in each country reported considerable integration of wildlife conservation and agricultural production. Namibian farmers reported
substantial problems with bush encroachment, whereas none of their Zambian counterparts raised similar complaints. This paper
describes the state of rangeland management on commercial farms in Namibia and Zambia and identifies important areas where
further research can contribute to the enhancement of this conservation-production system. 相似文献

山杏(Prunus armeniaca)是一种灌木状小乔木,在北京山区较为贫瘠、干旱的阳坡地带广泛分布。于2002年7月和2003年7~9月,采用种子收集筐估计了山杏种子的产量、种子雨的动态变化过程;在2003年的研究中,把收集筐中所获得的种子转入扣网之中以排除鸟类的影响,并设置了地表对照样方,调查和比较了扣网内和对照样方中、扣网和对照样方之间山杏种子被取食、搬离的动态变化及其差异性。研究表明,山杏种子的下落高峰发生于7月下旬至8月上旬,败育种子的下落早于完好种子且数量极少;在扣网内和对照样方中,被取食和被搬运的种子数量之间存在显著性差异,在扣网和对照样方之间.被取食和被搬运的种子数量的差异均未达到显著性水平;鼠类是种子雨期间取食山杏种子的主要动物.鸟类的作用可以忽略。 相似文献

There are two broad approaches to quantifying landscape C dynamics – by measuring changes in C stocks over time, or by measuring fluxes of C directly. However, these data may be patchy, and have gaps or biases. An alternative approach to generating C budgets has been to use process‐based models, constructed to simulate the key processes involved in C exchange. However, the process of model building is arguably subjective, and parameters may be poorly defined. This paper demonstrates why data assimilation (DA) techniques – which combine stock and flux observations with a dynamic model – improve estimates of, and provide insights into, ecosystem carbon (C) exchanges. We use an ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) to link a series of measurements with a simple box model of C transformations. Measurements were collected at a young ponderosa pine stand in central Oregon over a 3‐year period, and include eddy flux and soil CO2 efflux data, litterfall collections, stem surveys, root and soil cores, and leaf area index data. The simple C model is a mass balance model with nine unknown parameters, tracking changes in C storage among five pools; foliar, wood and fine root pools in vegetation, and also fresh litter and soil organic matter (SOM) plus coarse woody debris pools. We nested the EnKF within an optimization routine to generate estimates from the data of the unknown parameters and the five initial conditions for the pools. The efficacy of the DA process can be judged by comparing the probability distributions of estimates produced with the EnKF analysis vs. those produced with reduced data or model alone. Using the model alone, estimated net ecosystem exchange of C (NEE)=?251±197 g C m?2 over the 3 years, compared with an estimate of ?419±29 g C m?2 when all observations were assimilated into the model. The uncertainty on daily measurements of NEE via eddy fluxes was estimated at 0.5 g C m?2 day?1, but the uncertainty on assimilated estimates averaged 0.47 g C m?2 day?1, and only exceeded 0.5 g C m?2 day?1 on days where neither eddy flux nor soil efflux data were available. In generating C budgets, the assimilation process reduced the uncertainties associated with using data or model alone and the forecasts of NEE were statistically unbiased estimates. The results of the analysis emphasize the importance of time series as constraints. Occasional, rare measurements of stocks have limited use in constraining the estimates of other components of the C cycle. Long time series are particularly crucial for improving the analysis of pools with long time constants, such as SOM, woody biomass, and woody debris. Long‐running forest stem surveys, and tree ring data, offer a rich resource that could be assimilated to provide an important constraint on C cycling of slow pools. For extending estimates of NEE across regions, DA can play a further important role, by assimilating remote‐sensing data into the analysis of C cycles. We show, via sensitivity analysis, how assimilating an estimate of photosynthesis – which might be provided indirectly by remotely sensed data – improves the analysis of NEE. 相似文献

Abundance and Production of Riparian Trees in the Lowland Floodplain of the Queets River, Washington 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Riparian zones associated with alluvial rivers are spatially dynamic, forming distinct vegetative mosaics that exhibit sharp
contrasts in structure and processes related to the underlying biophysical template. The productivity of riparian plants,
especially trees, influences streamside community characteristics as well as the forms and fluxes of organic matter to adjacent
streams – thereby strongly impacting patterns of channel morphology, water flow, sedimentation, and habitat in rivers. As
part of a comprehensive investigation of riparian dynamics in coastal rain forest rivers of the Pacific Northwest (USA), we
examined riparian tree abundance (density, basal area, and biomass) and rates of production (basal area growth [BAI] and bole
wood biomass increase [P]) of seven common species – red alder (Alnus rubra), Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa), vine maple (Acer circinatum) and willow (Salix spp.) – in the lowland floodplain of the Queets River (Olympic National Park), Washington. Measurements were made annually
for three years (1999 – 2001) in 16 permanent plots on three biophysical templates that formed a toposequence – active floodplain,
young terrace and mature terrace. Stem density was highest in the active floodplain (∼27,000 stems/ ha), decreasing in the
young terrace (∼2,700 stems /ha) and the mature terrace (∼500 stems/ha). Basal area and total stem biomass were lowest in
the active floodplain (∼16 m2/ha and ∼18 Mg dry weight/ha, respectively) and higher on the young terrace (∼32 m2/ha and ∼134
Mg dry weight/ha) and on the mature terrace (∼69 m2/ha and ∼540 Mg dry weight /ha). Total plot-scale BAI was not significantly
different among the physical templates with mean values ranging from approximately 1.4 (low terrace) to approximately 2.8
m2/ha/y (active floodplain). In contrast, P was significantly higher on the mature terrace (10.3 Mg/ha) than the active floodplain
(3.2 Mg/ha) but there was no significant difference between young terrace (6.5 Mg/ha) and mature terrace. For the entire Queets
River floodplain (57 km2 over 77 km of river length), the mature terrace contributed 81% of the total annual production (28,764 Mg) whereas the active
floodplain and young terrace accounted only for 5 and 14%, respectively. Overall, we show that riparian trees grow quickly
in this coastal Pacific Northwest system and that the older riparian forests on mature terraces are the main contributors
to stem production at the plot and floodplain scales for at least 350 years after stand initiation. This suggests that, in
combination with the rapid lateral migrations of many alluvial rivers, the older riparian forests on those terraces are important
and sustained sources of organic matter (especially large woody debris, LWD) that, over decades to centuries, shape the character
of coastal rivers in the Pacific Northwest. 相似文献
