Females of many species are frequently courted by promiscuous males of their own and other closely related species. Such mating interactions may impose strong selection on female mating preferences to favor trait values in conspecific males that allow females to discriminate them from their heterospecific rivals. We explore the consequences of such selection in models of the evolution of female mating preferences when females must interact with heterospecific males from which they are completely postreproductively isolated. Specifically, we allow the values of both the most preferred male trait and the tolerance of females for males that deviate from this most preferred trait to evolve. Also, we consider situations in which females base their mating decisions on multiple male traits and must interact with males of multiple species. Females will rapidly differentiate in preference when they sometimes mistake heterospecific males for suitable mates, and the differentiation of female preference will select for conspecific male traits to differentiate as well. In most circumstances, this differentiation continues indefinitely, but slows substantially once females are differentiated enough to make mistakes rare. Populations of females with broader preference functions (i.e., broader tolerance for males with trait values that deviate from females' most preferred values) will evolve further to differentiate if the shape of the function cannot evolve. Also, the magnitude of separation that evolves is larger and achieved faster when conspecific males have lower relative abundance. The direction of differentiation is also very sensitive to initial conditions if females base their mate choices on multiple male traits. We discuss how these selection pressures on female mate choice may lead to speciation by generating differentiation among populations of a progenitor species that experiences different assemblages of heterospecifics. Opportunities for differentiation increase as the number of traits involved in mate choice increase and as the number of species involved increases. We suggest that this mode of speciation may have been particularly prevalent in response to the cycles of climatic change throughout the Quaternary that forced the assembly and disassembly of entire communities on a continentwide basis.  相似文献

We have shown that ElrA and ElrB, Xenopus ELAV homologues, bind the Vg1 mRNA 3'UTR translation element in Xenopus oocytes and implicated ElrB in mediating translational repression during oogenesis. Here we report that, while ElrA and ElrB are 69% identical and both exhibit RNA binding in the nM range, recombinant ElrB, but not ElrA, is able to oligomerise. This oligomerisation is also seen with the endogenous protein. Both RNA binding and oligomerisation require the linker region flanked with two RNA recognition motifs. Our data demonstrate a novel and unique property of ElrB which may be important for its function as a translational regulator.  相似文献

Pollen abortion is one of the major reasons causing the inter-subspecific F1 hybrid sterility in rice and is due to allelic interaction of F1 pollen sterility genes. The microsporogenesis and microgametogenesis of Taichung 65 and its three F1 hybrids were comparatively studied by using techniques of differential interference contrast microscopy, semi-thin section light microscopy, epifluorescence microscopy and TEM. The results showed that there were differences among the cytological mechanisms of pollen abortion due to allelic interaction at the three F1 pollen sterility loci. The allelic interaction at S-a locus resulted in microspores unable to extend the protoplasm membrane with the enlargement of the microspore at the middle microspore stage and finally producing empty abortive pollen. The allelic interaction at S-b locus caused asynchronous development of microspores at the middle microspore stage producing stainable abortive pollen. The allelic interaction at S-c locus mainly led to the non-dissolution of the generative cell wall and finally caused the hybrid F1 mainly producing stainable abortive pollen. Genotypic identification indicated that the abortive pollen were those with S j allele.  相似文献

Bacterial unsaturated glucuronyl hydrolases (UGLs) together with polysaccharide lyases are responsible for the complete depolymerization of mammalian extracellular matrix glycosaminoglycans. UGL acts on various oligosaccharides containing unsaturated glucuronic acid (DeltaGlcA) at the nonreducing terminus and releases DeltaGlcA through hydrolysis. In this study, we demonstrate the substrate recognition mechanism of the UGL of Bacillus sp. GL1 by determining the X-ray crystallographic structure of its substrate-enzyme complexes. The tetrasaccharide-enzyme complex demonstrated that at least four subsites are present in the active pocket. Although several amino acid residues are crucial for substrate binding, the enzyme strongly recognizes DeltaGlcA at subsite -1 through the formation of hydrogen bonds and stacking interactions, and prefers N-acetyl-d-galactosamine and glucose rather than N-acetyl-d-glucosamine as a residue accommodated in subsite +1, due to the steric hindrance.  相似文献

Ras regulates signal transduction pathway function by dynamically interacting with various effectors. To understand the basis for Ras function, its conformational dynamics were measured in the absence and presence of effectors using single molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between probes located on the Switch II region and GTP. The time trajectories of FRET efficiency from GTP-bound Ras showed that this conformation spontaneously varies among multiple states. Among them, a low FRET state was identified as an inactive state. The transition involving the inactive conformational state occurred in the time range of seconds. In contrast, fluctuation occurring most probably between multiple active high FRET conformational states lasted approximately 30 ms but converged to a specific conformational state upon binding to an effector. Thus, Ras conformation spontaneously fluctuates to readily interact with various effectors.  相似文献

The review focuses on the anisotropy of proton transfer at the surface of biological membranes. We consider (i) the data from “pulsed” experiments, where light-triggered enzymes capture or eject protons at the membrane surface, (ii) the electrostatic properties of water at charged interfaces, and (iii) the specific structural attributes of proton-translocating enzymes. The pulsed experiments revealed that proton exchange between the membrane surface and the bulk aqueous phase takes as much as about 1 ms, but could be accelerated by added mobile pH-buffers. Since the accelerating capacity of the latter decreased with the increase in their electric charge, it was concluded that the membrane surface is separated from the bulk aqueous phase by a barrier of electrostatic nature. The barrier could arise owing to the water polarization at the negatively charged membrane surface. The barrier height depends linearly on the charge of penetrating ions; for protons, it has been estimated as about 0.12 eV. While the proton exchange between the surface and the bulk aqueous phase is retarded by the interfacial barrier, the proton diffusion along the membrane, between neighboring enzymes, takes only microseconds. The proton spreading over the membrane is facilitated by the hydrogen-bonded networks at the surface. The membrane-buried layers of these networks can eventually serve as a storage/buffer for protons (proton sponges). As the proton equilibration between the surface and the bulk aqueous phase is slower than the lateral proton diffusion between the “sources” and “sinks”, the proton activity at the membrane surface, as sensed by the energy transducing enzymes at steady state, might deviate from that measured in the adjoining water phase. This trait should increase the driving force for ATP synthesis, especially in the case of alkaliphilic bacteria.  相似文献

Spider venom sphingomyelinases D catalyze the hydrolysis of sphingomyelin via an Mg(2+) ion-dependent acid-base catalytic mechanism which involves two histidines. In the crystal structure of the sulfate free enzyme determined at 1.85A resolution, the metal ion is tetrahedrally coordinated instead of the trigonal-bipyramidal coordination observed in the sulfate bound form. The observed hyperpolarized state of His47 requires a revision of the previously suggested catalytic mechanism. Molecular modeling indicates that the fundamental structural features important for catalysis are fully conserved in both classes of SMases D and that the Class II SMases D contain an additional intra-chain disulphide bridge (Cys53-Cys201). Structural analysis suggests that the highly homologous enzyme from Loxosceles bonetti is unable to hydrolyze sphingomyelin due to the 95Gly-->Asn and 134Pro-->Glu mutations that modify the local charge and hydrophobicity of the interfacial face. Structural and sequence comparisons confirm the evolutionary relationship between sphingomyelinases D and the glicerophosphodiester phosphoesterases which utilize a similar catalytic mechanism.  相似文献

Social relationships are essential for maintaining human mental health, yet little is known about the brain mechanisms involved in the development and maintenance of social bonds. Animal models are powerful tools for investigating the neurobiological mechanisms regulating the cognitive processes leading to the development of social relationships and for potentially extending our understanding of the human condition. In this review, we discuss the roles of the neuropeptides oxytocin and vasopressin in the regulation of social bonding as well as related social behaviors which culminate in the formation of social relationships in animal models. The formation of social bonds is a hierarchical process involving social motivation and approach, the processing of social stimuli and formation of social memories, and the social attachment itself. Oxytocin and vasopressin have been implicated in each of these processes. Specifically, these peptides facilitate social affiliation and parental nurturing behavior, are essential for social recognition in rodents, and are involved in the formation of selective mother-infant bonds in sheep and pair bonds in monogamous voles. The convergence of evidence from these animal studies makes oxytocin and vasopressin attractive candidates for the neural modulation of human social relationships as well as potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of psychiatric disorders associated with disruptions in social behavior, including autism.  相似文献

Previous experiments have demonstrated that green lacewing (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) adults could be attracted to field crops using artificial honeydew. To be effective as a biological control method, such a technique would require that the increase in female abundance translate in an increase egg deposition. An experiment was conducted to evaluate whether the honeydew-feeding females of the green lacewing Chrysoperla rufilabris (Burmeister) avoid laying eggs in the presence of conspecific eggs. The potential risk associated with oviposition in a site already occupied by conspecific eggs was also studied. The preference of C. rufilabris larvae for kin and non-kin eggs and the susceptibility of C. rufilabris eggs to cannibalism relative to their age was determined. The results demonstrate that females are not reluctant to oviposit in the presence of conspecific eggs. Larvae show no preference for kin or non-kin eggs, and lacewing eggs become less susceptible to cannibalism as they age. This indicates that the risk of egg cannibalism by neonate in the field may be low. The results are discussed from ecological and biological control points of view.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed for investigating the role of Gln50 in the engrailed homeodomain-DNA recognition. Employing the crystal structure of free engrailed homeodomain and homeodomain-DNA complex as a starting structure, we carried out MD simulations of: (i) the complex between engrailed homeodomain and a 20 base-pair DNA containing TAATTA core sequence; (ii) the free engrailed homeodomain. The simulations show that homeodomain flexibility does not depend on its ligation state. The engrailed homeodomain shows similar flexibility, and the recognition helix-3 shows very similar characteristic of high rigidity and limited conformational space in two complexation states. At the same time, DNA structure has also no obvious conformational fluctuations. These results preclude the possibility of the side chain of Gln50 forming direct hydrogen bonds to the core DNA bases. MD simulations confirm a few well-conserved sites for water-mediated hydrogen bonds from protein to DNA are occupied by water molecules, and Gln50 interacts with corresponding core DNA bases through water-mediated hydrogen bonds. So Gln50 plays a relatively modest role in determining the affinity and specificity of the engrailed homeodomain. In addition, the electrostatic interaction between homeodomain and phosphate backbone of the DNA is a main factor for N- and C-terminal arm becoming ordered upon DNA binding.  相似文献
