The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of oxygen-breathing on maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and submaximal endurance performance. Six young women and five men rode a cycle-ergometer while breathing compressed air (normoxia, NOX) or a 55% O2 in N2 mixture (hyperoxia, HOX). The VO2max increased significantly by 12% (P less than 0.01) with HOX in the women but not in the men (+4%; nonsignificant). Maximal heart rate was also increased with HOX in the women but not in the men. Endurance time during work to exhaustion at 80% of normoxic VO2max was 41% longer in HOX than in NOX (P less than 0.025) with no significant difference between the men and the women. The variation among individuals was large. The oxygen uptake and respiratory quotient were not different in the two endurance tests, but pulmonary ventilation (VE) and blood lactate concentration were lower in HOX than in NOX, especially during the latter part of the task. Plasma base deficit (BDpl) increased initially by 3.5 mmol.l-1 during HOX and then stabilized. In NOX, a continuous increase was seen and the change was more than twice as large. Relative to BDpl, VE was higher in HOX than in NOX indicating a more efficient ventilatory compensation of the metabolic acidosis. The reduced ventilatory demand and lower metabolic acidosis in HOX in combination with lower relative exercise intensity may have contributed to the longer time to exhaustion. However, the pattern of individual variation suggested that other mechanisms were also involved.  相似文献

Recently, we have shown that an untrained respiratory system does limit the endurance of submaximal exercise (64% peak oxygen consumption) in normal sedentary subjects. These subjects were able to increase breathing endurance by almost 300% and cycle endurance by 50% after isolated respiratory training. The aim of the present study was to find out if normal, endurance trained subjects would also benefit from respiratory training. Breathing and cycle endurance as well as maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and anaerobic threshold were measured in eight subjects. Subsequently, the subjects trained their respiratory muscles for 4 weeks by breathing 85-160 l.min-1 for 30 min daily. Otherwise they continued their habitual endurance training. After respiratory training, the performance tests made at the beginning of the study were repeated. Respiratory training increased breathing endurance from 6.1 (SD 1.8) min to about 40 min. Cycle endurance at the anaerobic threshold [77 (SD 6) %VO2max] was improved from 22.8 (SD 8.3) min to 31.5 (SD 12.6) min while VO2max and the anaerobic threshold remained essentially the same. Therefore, the endurance of respiratory muscles can be improved remarkably even in trained subjects. Respiratory muscle fatigue induced hyperventilation which limited cycle performance at the anaerobic threshold. After respiratory training, minute ventilation for a given exercise intensity was reduced and cycle performance at the anaerobic threshold was prolonged. These results would indicate the respiratory system to be an exercise limiting factor in normal, endurance trained subjects.  相似文献

This overview presents data showing that glucose use increases and that excitatory amino acids (i.e., glutamate, aspartate), taurine and ascorbate increase in the extracellular fluid during seizures. During the cellular hyperactive state taurine appears to serve as an osmoregulator and ascorbate may serve as either an antioxidant or as a pro-oxidant. Finally, a unifying hypothesis is given for seizure-induced brain damage. This unifying hypothesis states that during seizures there is a release of excitatory amino acids which act on glutamatergic receptors, increasing neuronal activity and thereby increasing glucose use. This hyperactivity of cells causes an influx, of calcium (i.e. calcium stress) and water movements (i.e., osmotic stress) into the cells that culminate in brain damage mediated by reactive oxygen species.Special issue dedicated to Dr. Frederick E. Floral scents of male and female inflorescences of three dioeciousSalix species were collected by head-space adsorption, and analysed by GC-MS. InSalix caprea andS. cinerea 1,4-dimethoxy benzene was the main compound, and male and female scents showed a high degree of resemblance. No dominant compound was found inS. repens and malefemale scent similarity was low. Floral scent inSalix is likely a strong orientation cue, guiding pollinators between male and female plants ensuring pollen transfer and pollination. We suggest that a high degree of male-female floral scent resemblance is coupled to a high degree of insect pollination. Floral scent does not promote reproductive isolation betweenS. caprea andS. cinerea.  相似文献

The formation of reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) during redox cycling of newly synthesized potential antitumor 2,5-bis (1-aziridinyl)-1,4-benzoquinone (BABQ) derivatives has been studied by assaying the production of ROI (superoxide, hydroxyl radical, and hydrogen peroxide) by xanthine oxidase in the presence of BABQ derivatives. At low concentrations (< 10 microM) some BABQ derivatives turned out to inhibit the production of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals by xanthine oxidase, while the effect on the xanthine-oxidase-induced production of hydrogen peroxide was much less pronounced. Induction of DNA strand breaks by reactive oxygen species generated by xanthine oxidase was also inhibited by BABQ derivatives. The DNA damage was comparable to the amount of hydroxyl radicals produced. The inhibiting effect on hydroxyl radical production can be explained as a consequence of the lowered level of superoxide, which disrupts the Haber-Weiss reaction sequence. The inhibitory effect of BABQ derivatives on superoxide formation correlated with their one-electron reduction potentials: BABQ derivatives with a high reduction potential scavenge superoxide anion radicals produced by xanthine oxidase, leading to reduced BABQ species and production of hydrogen peroxide from reoxidation of reduced BABQ. This study, using a unique series of BABQ derivatives with an extended range of reduction potentials, demonstrates that the formation of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals by bioreductively activated antitumor quinones can in principle be uncoupled from alkylating activity.  相似文献

Abstract Volatile substances emitted from the flowers of eight Magnolia taxa ( M. sieboldii ssp. japonica, M. praecocissima var. praecocissima and var. borealis, M. tomentosa, M. salicifolia, M. obovata, M. denudata, and M. grandiflora ) and one Michelia species ( M. compressa ) (Magnoliaceae) were examined and identified using GC-MS. Volatile substances of these Magnolia and Michelia species consist primarily of monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids produced by the mevalonate pathway, acetogenins by the acetate-malonate pathway, and phenyl-propanoids by the shikimate pathway. These Magnolia and Michelia species all possessed various combinations of volatile monoterpenoids, acetogenins, and phenylpropanoids, except for Magnolia obovata , which emitted primarily sesquiterpenoids. Free amino acids in pollen of 12 Magnolia and one Liriodendron species were also analyzed, and their value as food sources for pollinators evaluated.
Pollinators visiting the flowers of five Magnolia species were collected in their native sites and identified. Their behaviors and roles as pollinating agents were assessed.  相似文献

Five strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum (USDA 6, 110, 122, 138, and 143) were screened in cell culture for tolerance to acidity (pH 4.2, 4.4, and 4.6) and Al (0, 3, 4, 5, and 6 mg L–1) under low P conditions. Each strain was later grown in association with seven soybean [Glycine max. (L) Merr.] cultivars which were also screened for tolerance to the same stresses in nutrient culture to determine which soybean-Bradyrhizobium combinations would establish the most effective symbiotic N2 fixing relationships. Results indicated that strains USDA 110 and 6 were more tolerant than USDA 122, 138 and 143 with USDA 110 being the most tolerant. Acidity appeared to be the more severe stress; but even when strains showed tolerance to the stresses, cell numbers were significantly reduced. This suggests that colonization of soils and soybean roots can be adversely affected under similar conditions in the field which may result in reduced nodulation. The strains found to be more tolerant to the stresses were more effective N2 fixers in symbiosis with all soybean cultivars, with USDA 110 being definitely superior. The association between the more tolerant strains and cultivars had the largest nitrogenase activity. Further studies on the inclusion of tolerant Bradyrhizobium strains in inoculum used on tolerant soybean cultivars in the field are warranted.  相似文献

We present here an improvement to the analysis of oxygen evolution with four sigma coefficients (4-S) by computing z, the sum of the S-state probabilities, which was introduced earlier (Delrieu and Rosengard 1987, Biochim Biophys Acta 892: 163–171). We demonstrate that z is equal to the ratio of two consecutive Mean Y (the estimation of the steady state oxygen production based on local properties) found by three sigma analysis. The quantity z is useful for computing double-hits, and for showing the inactivation/activation processes of PS II complexes. Three sigma analysis assumes z=1 exactly; since this is not verified, it is argued that four sigma analysis is closer to the real workings of the water oxidizing complex. Oxygen evolution can then be interpreted in the frame of a modified Kok's model where the sum of the probabilities equals z. We therefore suggest that the closer fitting of four sigma analysis to oxygen production data is not simply due to an extra, unnecessary variable, but to the fact that PS II complexes can be inactivated and reactivated under flashing light. Finally, in order to facilitate the use of four sigma analysis, a computer program is made available upon request.  相似文献
