We examine the influence of socio-environmental (and birth cohort specific) effects on both adult height and gender dimorphism (height gap). Our data set is from contemporary Spain, a country governed by an authoritarian regime for about 40 years. Both OLS and quantile regression approaches are used to examine these patterns. Furthermore, we then draw upon a Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition approach to explain the influence of socio-political environment in explaining gender dimorphism. Our findings point to a significant increase in adult height in the generations that benefited from the country's economic liberalization in the 1950s, and especially among those brought up after the transition to democracy in the 1970s. In contrast, individual heterogeneity suggests that only in recent generations has "height increased more among the tallest". We also find that the effects of education on height are greater among shorter individuals. Although the mean gender difference in height is 11.7cm, birth cohort and capabilities effects along with other controls explain on average roughly 4% of the gender height dimorphism, irrespective of the quantile considered.  相似文献

To cope with the accumulation of unfolded or misfolded proteins the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) has evolved specific signalling pathways collectively called the unfolded protein response (UPR). Elucidation of the mechanisms governing ER stress signalling has linked this response to the regulation of diverse physiologic processes as well as to the progression of a number of diseases. Interest in hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) has focused on the study of proteins implicated in iron homeostasis and on the identification of new alleles related with the disease. HFE has been amongst the preferred targets of interest, since the discovery that its C282Y mutation was associated with HH. However, the discrepancies between the disease penetrance and the frequency of this mutation have raised the possibility that its contribution to disease progression might go beyond the mere involvement in regulation of cellular iron uptake. Recent findings revealed that activation of the UPR is a feature of HH and that this stress response may be involved in the genesis of immunological anomalies associated with the disease. This review addresses the connection of the UPR with HH, including its role in MHC-I antigen presentation pathway and possible implications for new clinical approaches to HH.  相似文献

Many experimental approaches in biology and biophysics, as well as applications in diagnosis and drug discovery, require proteins to be immobilized on solid supports. Protein microarrays, for example, provide a high-throughput format to study biomolecular interactions. The technique employed for protein immobilization is a key to the success of these applications. Transferrin and transferrin receptor are two key proteins of iron metabolism that have been identified to be hypoxia-inducible genes. Divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) is also a key transporter of iron under physiological conditions. In addition, in the 5' regulatory region of human DMT1 (between -412 and -570), there are two motifs (CCAAAGTGCTGGG) that are similar to hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) binding sites. It was therefore speculated that DMT1 might also be a hypoxia-inducible gene. We investigated the effects of hypoxia and hypoxia/re-oxygenation on the expression of DMT1 and the content of HIF-1alpha in HepG2 cells. As we expected, a very similar tendency in the responses of the expression of HIF-1alpha, DMT1+IRE (iron response element) and DMT1-IRE proteins to chemical (CoCl(2)) or physical hypoxia was observed. A highly significant correlation was found between the expression of DMT1 proteins and the contents of HIF-1 in hypoxic cells. After the cells were exposed to hypoxia and subsequent normoxia, no HIF-1alpha could be detected and a significant decrease in DMT1+IRE expression (P<0.05), but not in DMT1-IRE protein (versus the hypoxia group), was observed. The findings implied that the HIF-1 pathway might have a role in the regulation of DMT1+IRE expression during hypoxia.  相似文献

Brittleness culm is an important agronomic trait that has a potential usefulness in agricultural activity as animal forage although the developmental mechanism is not clear yet. In the present study, the anatomical and chemical characteristics as well as some ecophysiological features in the brittleness culm mutation of rice (Oryza sativa L.) were investigated. Compared with the wild type (WT), the brittleness culm mutant (bcm) exhibited higher culm vascular bundle distance and lower culm wall thickness, leaf interveinal distance and leaf thickness. Ratio of bundle sheath cell/whole bundle and areas of whole vascular bundles and bundle sheath of leaves were reduced while ratios of xylem and phloem to whole bundles were elevated in bcm. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy analysis and further histochemical and physiological measurements revealed that the different contents and depositions of cell wall components such as pectins, lignin, suberin and cellulose all participated in the mutation of brittleness. However, the mutant presented no significant changes in leaf photosynthetic dynamics and apoplastic transport ability. These results strongly indicate that the alterations in anatomical and chemical characteristics, rather than changes in major ecophysiological features such as photosynthesis and apoplastic transport were involved in the brittleness mutation of rice.  相似文献

The criteria for deficit schizophrenia were designed to define a group of patients with enduring, primary (or idiopathic) negative symptoms. In 2001, a review of the literature suggested that deficit schizophrenia constitutes a disease separate from nondeficit forms of schizophrenia. Here we provide a review of new studies, not included in that paper, in which patients with deficit schizophrenia and those with nondeficit schizophrenia were compared on dimensions typically used to distinguish diseases: signs and symptoms, course of illness, pathophysiological correlates, risk and etiological factors, and treatment response. Replicated findings and new evidence of double dissociation supporting the separate disease hypothesis are highlighted. Weaknesses in research and treatment options for these patients are also emphasized.  相似文献

Aims: Large hurricanes have profound impacts on temperate forests,but owing to their infrequent nature these effects have rarelybeen examined in detail. In 1996, Hurricane Fran significantlydamaged many long-term tree census plots in the Duke Foreston the North Carolina Piedmont, thereby providing an exceptionalopportunity to examine pre- and post-hurricane forest compositionaltrajectories. Our goal was to examine immediate, short-term(0–4 years) and longer term (5 year) hurricane-inducedstructural, spatial and compositional changes in the tree population(stem d.b.h > 1 cm) in the context of our detailed, long-termknowledge of the dynamics of these forests. Methods: We surveyed stem damage and tree mortality in 34 long-term permanentplots (ca. 70-year record; 404–1 012 m2) and 7 large mappedtree stands (ca. 20-year record; 5 250–65 000 m2) representingboth transition-phase, even-aged pine stands and uneven-agedupland hardwood forests. We employed three types of damage measuresto quantify stand-level damage severity: percentage of stemsdamaged, percentage of basal area lost and a ‘stand-leveldamage index’. Second-order spatial analysis (Ripley'sK-function) was used to investigate patterns in tree mortality. Important findings: Our study found hurricane effects on the structural attributesof Piedmont forests to be variable and patchy. Changes in treespecies composition, however, were modest. Uprooting was themajor damage type for the overstory trees [diameter at breastheight (d.b.h.) >10 cm] apparently due to the exposure ofthe crowns to high wind combined with heavy rainfall prior toand during the storm. Saplings, juvenile trees and small trees(1–10 cm d.b.h.) of the understory and midstory were mainlydamaged by being pinned or bent by their damaged large neighbors.Hurricane-induced tree mortality varied weakly among species,was positively correlated with pre-hurricane tree size and remainedup to 2-fold higher than pre-hurricane background mortality5 years after the hurricane. Spatial point pattern analysisrevealed a patchy distribution of tree mortality during thehurricane sampling interval. Hurricane Fran resulted in a dramaticincrease in average gap size from ca. 400 m2 pre-hurricane toca 1100 m2 after the hurricane, whereas maximum gap sizes reached18–34 times larger than the pre-hurricane levels.  相似文献

The fruit mineral contents (K, Ca, Ba, Br, Zn, Co, Cr, Fe, Na, Rb, Cs, and Sr) of four native and two exotic naturalized shrubs growing in different areas of the Andean Patagonian region of Argentina were investigated. Native species Berberis darwinii, Berberis microphylla (Berberidaceae), Aristotelia chilensis (Elaeocarpaceae) and Ribes magellanicum (Saxifragaceae) produce small berries while the fruits of the exotic species Rosa rubiginosa and Rosa canina (Rosaceae) are aggregates of aquenes. They are used to prepare jams, tea, liquors, and ice creams. Native shrub fruits had higher content of Br, Zn, Co, Cr, Fe, Mo, and Na than those of the exotic naturalized species. Rosa species showed the highest contents of Ca and Ba in their fruits (the mean content doubled those of the native plant fruits). The fruit nutrient content found in the studied species was similar or higher than other values reported for fruits of temperate and tropical species in the world.  相似文献
