Increasing numbers of cancer patients survive and live longer than five years after therapy, but very often side effects of cancer treatment arise at same time. One of the side effects, chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI), also called “chemobrain” or “chemofog” by patients, brings enormous challenges to cancer survivors following successful chemotherapeutic treatment. Decreased abilities of learning, memory, attention, executive function and processing speed in cancer survivors with CICI, are some of the challenges that greatly impair survivors' quality of life. The molecular mechanisms of CICI involve very complicated processes, which have been the subject of investigation over the past decades. Many mechanistic candidates have been studied including disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), DNA damage, telomere shortening, oxidative stress and associated inflammatory response, gene polymorphism of neural repair, altered neurotransmission, and hormone changes. Oxidative stress is considered as a vital mechanism, since over 50% of FDA-approved anti-cancer drugs can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) or reactive nitrogen species (RNS), which lead to neuronal death. In this review paper, we discuss these important candidate mechanisms, in particular oxidative stress and the cytokine, TNF-alpha and their potential roles in CICI. 相似文献

Since the start of the 20th century, many invasive alien species (IAS) have spread rapidly around the world, causing serious threats to economies, societies and the environment. Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is an important quarantine insect species in many countries that spread around the world over the last century. This review collected information on the distribution of B. dorsalis to explore the patterns of its invasion expansion. We found B. dorsalis to be distributed in 75 countries (comprised of 124 geographical distribution regions: provinces or states) in Asia, Africa, North America, South America and Oceania up to 2017. Asia and Africa were the most represented regions, accounting for 86.3% of the total number of countries. From 1910 to 1990, B. dorsalis was only found in five countries, but in the last three decades, it has experienced a sharp increase in its rate of spread, invading 70 more countries. Global temperature anomaly has significantly positive correlation with the spread of B. dorsalis. The results of this review provide a theoretical basis for understanding and predicting the continued spread of B. dorsalis under global changes. 相似文献

A high capacity for long‐distance dispersal is a key to success for species confronted with environmental heterogeneity, habitat modification, fragmentation and loss. However, dispersal capacity is difficult to quantify and therefore poorly known in most taxa. Here, we report on a test for an association of variation in dispersal capacity with variable colouration of noctuid moths. First, using data from 12 experienced lepidopterologists, we showed that despite variation among experts in average assessments, different species are consistently classified as having non‐variable, variable or highly variable colour patterns when assessed by different experts. We then compared the incidence of non‐resident species with high inter‐individual variation in colour patterns recorded on the isolated island Utklippan (n = 47), with that in a species pool of potential long‐distance dispersers from the nearest mainland (n = 295). Species with high inter‐individual colour pattern variation were over‐represented on the island compared with species having non‐variable colouration. This finding constitutes rare evidence from the wild of long‐distance dispersal, measured on a spatial scale relevant for moths when tracking habitats in fragmented and changing landscapes or when keeping pace with environmental challenges associated with climate change. Finally, we showed that Swedish noctuid moths classified as agricultural pests (n = 28) had more variable colour patterns compared with non‐pests (n = 368). The majority of agricultural pests were also recorded on the isolated island, an outcome that is indicative of pest species having high dispersal capacity. Data on colour pattern variation may thus offer a simple and cost‐effective proxy to estimate dispersal capacity and can also help identify potential pest species. Our findings are potentially useful when modelling and predicting population and range dynamics of species in spatiotemporally heterogeneous environments, with direct implications for conservation biology and pest management. 相似文献

As the mammalian central nervous system matures, its regenerative ability decreases, leading to incomplete or non‐recovery from the neurodegenerative diseases and central nervous system insults that we are increasingly facing in our aging world population. Current neuroregenerative research is largely directed toward identifying the molecular and cellular players that underlie central nervous system repair, yet it repeatedly ignores the aging context in which many of these diseases appear. Using an optic nerve crush model in a novel biogerontology model, that is, the short‐living African turquoise killifish, the impact of aging on injury‐induced optic nerve repair was investigated. This work reveals an age‐related decline in axonal regeneration in female killifish, with different phases of the repair process being affected depending on the age. Interestingly, as in mammals, both a reduced intrinsic growth potential and a non‐supportive cellular environment seem to lie at the basis of this impairment. Overall, we introduce the killifish visual system and its age‐dependent regenerative ability as a model to identify new targets for neurorepair in non‐regenerating individuals, thereby also considering the effects of aging on neurorepair. 相似文献

Abstract The relative electrophoretic mobilities of various enzymes from 24 different streptomycetes were determined on polyacrylamide gels in order to examine the relatedness of species and strains of the genus Streptomyces . Of 11 different enzymes tested in this study, hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase and isocitrate dehydrogenase showed a limited number of constant and reproducible polymorphic enzyme patterns, by comparing which the inter-specific relationships could be examined. In contrast, glucose dehydrogenase, alcohol dehydrogenase, 3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucose isomerase, peroxidase and esterase exhibited either weak non-reproducible or highly heterogeneous band patterns which were suitable for dissecting the strains within a species and a cluster group. 相似文献

A. elegantissima partitions space in a regular or even pattern and interferes with conspecifics. 在采用网格法对华北平原及黄土高原啮齿动物调查的基础上,分析了啮齿动物物种丰富度空间格局。华北平原物种丰富度最低,其次为晋、翼山地和汾、渭谷地,而南蒙高原和黄土高原的丰富度较高;物种丰富度纬向变化不明显,而经向变化显著,由东向西,物种丰富度呈递增趋势;丰富度在海拔上的变化并不存在相关的地理模式;丰富度与山地面积呈正相关,与平原面积呈负相关,而与丘陵面积相关不显著,丰富度与各地地貌类型面积的总和呈明显的正相关;丰富度与温度相关不明显,而与降雨量呈负相关。在华北平原及黄土高原,生境结构类型愈复杂的地区,啮齿动物物种丰富度愈高。 相似文献

Inferring functional relationships of proteins from local sequence and spatial surface patterns 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We describe a novel approach for inferring functional relationship of proteins by detecting sequence and spatial patterns of protein surfaces. Well-formed concave surface regions in the form of pockets and voids are examined to identify similarity relationship that might be directly related to protein function. We first exhaustively identify and measure analytically all 910,379 surface pockets and interior voids on 12,177 protein structures from the Protein Data Bank. The similarity of patterns of residues forming pockets and voids are then assessed in sequence, in spatial arrangement, and in orientational arrangement. Statistical significance in the form of E and p-values is then estimated for each of the three types of similarity measurements. Our method is fully automated without human intervention and can be used without input of query patterns. It does not assume any prior knowledge of functional residues of a protein, and can detect similarity based on surface patterns small and large. It also tolerates, to some extent, conformational flexibility of functional sites. We show with examples that this method can detect functional relationship with specificity for members of the same protein family and superfamily, as well as remotely related functional surfaces from proteins of different fold structures. We envision that this method can be used for discovering novel functional relationship of protein surfaces, for functional annotation of protein structures with unknown biological roles, and for further inquiries on evolutionary origins of structural elements important for protein function. 相似文献

An important question in contemporary sensory neuroscience is how animals perceive their environment and make appropriate behavioral choices based on chemical perceptions. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster exhibits robust tastant and odor-evoked behaviors. Understanding how the gustatory and olfactory systems support the perception of these contact and volatile chemicals and translate them into appropriate attraction or avoidance behaviors has made an unprecedented contribution to our knowledge of the organization of chemosensory systems. In this review, I begin by describing the receptors and signaling mechanisms of the Drosophila gustatory and olfactory systems and then highlight their involvement in the control of simple and complex behaviors. The topics addressed include feeding behavior, learning and memory, navigation behavior, neuropeptide modulation of chemosensory behavior, and I conclude with a discussion of recent work that provides insight into pheromone signaling pathways. 相似文献
