Abstract

A group of children (n=137) were surveyed with respect to pet ownership and pet preferences to explore the link between the human–animal bond and empathy. The most notable findings—and contrary to our predictions—were: (1) there was no difference in empathy (Bryan Empathy Index) between pet owners and non-owners; (2) there was no correlation between empathy and attachment to pets (Companion Animal Bonding Scale); and (3) higher empathy scores were not related to pet-preference indicators. A more fine-grained examination of the pet-owning group only revealed differences with respect to type of animal owned. Higher empathy was evident with dog ownership as opposed to other pet types. However, this needs to be tempered by the equally interesting observation that lower empathy was related to cat ownership. Regardless of how ownership groups are configured, there is consistent evidence that differentiates cat owners (lower empathy) from dog owners (higher empathy). When pet ownership and pet preference are combined to form new groupings, again, the cat effects and dog effects are evident. Implications extend to the need: (1) for future research on the nature of the human–animal bond; (2) to explore the relationship between personality and animal bonding; and (3) to refine the questions surrounding the animal-based links to empathy, as well as other related constructs such as prosocial behaviour, compassion, self-esteem, self-control, autonomy, affection, stress, responsibility, and perhaps even emotional intelligence, career paths and community service.  相似文献

Adequate tongue protrusion may be regulated by cat bilateral area P (the motor cortex for jaw and tongue movements) (Hiraba and Sato, Somatosens Mot Res 2005b;22:183–192). The ICMS (intracortical microstimulation) in the unilateral area P evoked motor effects of tongue protrusion without deviation (Hiraba and Sato, Somatosens Mot Res 2004;23:1–12), and cats with the unilateral lesion of area P showed abnormal tongue protrusion without deviation during licking (Hiraba and Sato, Somatosens Mot Res 2005b;22:183–192). Further, the measurements of the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in the bilateral jaw and tongue motor cortical areas were shown to have the same activity rate during the lateral licking (Hiraba and Sato, Somatosens Mot Res 2005c;22:307–317). We assumed from these results that cortical control for tongue protrusion was executed by networks between the bilateral area P including inhibitory interneurons. We prepared the measurable cats of the rCBF in the contralateral side after the unilateral area P lesion. Changes in the rates of rCBF and tongue protrusion during licking were examined over a long time course of about 1–2 months after the unilateral area P lesion. All cats after the unilateral area P lesion showed increased rate (double or triple in comparison with the normal ones) of rCBF of the contralateral area P in the early (0–20 days) phase. On the other hand, increased rates of tongue protrusion were about 120% in the early phase, and about 180% in the middle (21–35 days) and late (36–last days) phases. The results support the organization of networks between bilateral area P including the inhibitory interneurons.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to examine mastication-specific activity of orofacial neurons in the motor and masticatory cortices of the awake cat. We examine properties of mastication-related neurons (MRNs) in masticatory (MA, the rostral region of the orbital gyrus) and motor (area P, the lateral wall of the presylvian sulcus) cortical areas that are related to mastication of cats. MRNs in MA and area P had in common mechanoreceptive fields (RFs) in perioral, mandibular and lingual regions, and many MRNs had bilateral RFs in the tongue and mandibular regions. Facial RF size was the largest in area P. Eleven percent of MRN recording sites in MA, and 43% in area P evoked various motor effects with the use of intracortical microstimulation (ICMS). MRNs of the pre-movement type showing activities prior to mastication, or masticatory or lingual EMG, were 14% in MA and 45% in area P. Based on wheat germ agglutinin–horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) injection into area P and MA, cortico-cortical connections were examined. After the unilateral area P injection, were reciprocal connections between the contralateral area P and bilateral MA were demonstrated. After the unilateral MA injection, there were reciprocal connections between the contralateral MA, bilateral area P and bilateral orofacial SI (the orofacial region of the first somatosensory area). These findings suggest that accurate masticatory movements may be executed by the cortical processing in MA and area P.  相似文献

Based on area P lesion experiments, we hypothesized that tongue protrusion adapted for licking might be regulated by the lateral wall of the presylvian sulcus (bilateral areas P) of the cerebral cortex (Hiraba H, Sato T, Nakakawa K, Ueda K. . Cortical control of appropriate tongue protrusion during licking in cats—Increase in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) of the contralateral area P and in tongue protrusion after the unilateral area P lesion. Somatosens Mot Res 26:82–89). We propose that the right and left lingual muscles are dominated by the right and left hypoglossal nucleus, respectively, and that right and left pyramidal cells projecting to the right and left hypoglossal nucleus, respectively, exist in unilateral area P. These cells project via an inhibitory interneuron relay to the lateral branches toward the left or right pyramidal cells in contralateral area P. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the existence of inhibitory interneurons using injections of a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) agonist (muscimol), a GABA antagonist (bicuculline), and kainic acid into unilateral area P, followed by examination of tongue protrusion and lateral movements during trained licking and changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) values in the contralateral area P. We found disordered protrusion toward both sides and a marked decrease in rCBF values in the contralateral area P after bicuculline injection. We also found abnormal tongue protrusion toward the front and a marked increase in rCBF values after muscimol and kainic acid injections. These results suggest that cortical networks between the bilateral areas P are relayed by inhibitory interneurons.  相似文献

Thirty-three cefazolin-resistant extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli strains from companion animals were screened for bla(CMY-1) , bla(CMY-2) , bla(SHV) , bla(TEM) , and bla(CTX-M) genes. Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing strains were further characterized by O serotyping and multilocus sequence typing. It was found that 20 and 17 isolates harbored TEM-1 and CMY-2 β-lactamases, respectively, and 13 isolates harbored both β-lactamases. One isolate harbored DHA-1 β-lactamase. Eleven isolates were found to possess CTX-M β-lactamases (CTX-M-27 [n= 6], CTX-M-14 [n= 3], CTX-M-15 [n= 1], and CTX-M-55 [n= 1]). Of 11 CTX-M-positive strains, four strains were O25b-ST131 clones harboring CTX-M-27, and the remaining seven strains belonged to O6-ST127, ONT-ST354, O159-ST539, O1-ST648, O8-ST1642, O25b-ST2042, and ONT-ST2178.  相似文献

For wild and domestic felids, electroejaculation (EE) is the most common semen collection method. However, the equipment is expensive, there is a risk of urine contamination and animals usually show strong muscular contraction despite general anesthesia. Accordingly, we tested the feasibility of a different approach using urethral catheterization (UC) in seven African lions, previously described for domestic cats only. After general anesthesia with the α2-agonist medetomidine (which also stimulates semen release into the urethra) and ketamine, a transrectal ultrasound was performed to locate the prostate. A commercial dog urinary catheter (2.6 or 3.3 mm in diameter) was advanced approximately 30 cm into the urethra to allow semen collection into the lumen of the catheter by capillary forces. After retraction, sperm volumes between of 422.86 ± 296.07 μl yielded motility of 88.83 ± 13.27% (mean ± SD) with a mean sperm concentration of 1.94 × 109/ml. Here we describe a simple, field friendly and effective method to attain highly concentrated semen samples with excellent motility in lions and potentially other wild felid species as an alternative to electroejaculation.  相似文献

Reproductive evaluations were conducted on 185 male cats representing eight endemic Latin American species that were maintained in 44 zoos and private facilities in 12 Latin American countries. Reproductive assessments (testicular measures, ejaculate quality, and blood testosterone/cortisol concentration) were used to establish normative values for large‐ and small‐sized cats in Latin American collections. Data also were analyzed using multiple regression to study the impact of proven breeder status, diet, and various animal housing combinations. Most felids (>95%) in the survey were of wild‐born origin, and <20% had produced offspring in captivity. Larger felids had bigger testes and produced more semen, but tended to produce low‐sperm‐density ejaculates. The ejaculates of small felids were more sperm‐concentrated, but contained fewer total spermatozoa. Sperm motility was unrelated to species size, and certain species (puma, margay, tigrina, and jaguarundi) consistently produced few (<40%) normal sperm forms. Across species, >50% of males had low sperm counts (<1 million total sperm per ejaculate). Among large cats (jaguars and pumas), proven breeders had larger (P<0.05) testes, greater semen volume, and more normal sperm than nonbreeders. Males on adequate diets had higher (P<0.05) circulating cortisol. Among small‐sized felids, proven breeders had higher (P<0.05) testosterone, and males housed alone or paired with a conspecific female had more (P<0.05) total sperm per ejaculate and greater (P<0.05) seminal and testicular volumes. Fifty‐nine ejaculates (potentially representing ~100 artificial insemination (AI) or 26,000 in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures) were cryopreserved for a felid genome resource bank. In conclusion, breeding success and reproductive traits for many endemic felids in Latin American zoos appear to be suboptimal, and likely would benefit from improvements in diet and exhibitry. Technology transfer and continued training of zoo staff and scientists in Latin American countries are essential if these zoos are to achieve their tremendous conservation potential for felids and other threatened endemic species. We investigate the genetic profile of putative European Wildcats in north-eastern France, possessing the wildcat phenotype, but sampled in an area where they are sympatric with free-roaming domestic cats and, thus, are exposed to potential hybridisation. From a sample of 209 cats, the programme STRUCTURE clearly identified two distinct genetic clusters that corresponded to European Wildcats and domestic cats. The cats from these two clusters were clearly differentiated from each other (F ST  = 0.16). However, the genotypes of some individual cats were split between the two clusters, indicative of genetic admixture. Our analysis demonstrates that a genetically distinct population of cats that possess the European Wildcat phenotype persists in north-eastern France, but that there is a low, yet real, risk of hybridisation with sympatric domestic cats. These European Wildcats warrant conservation efforts to protect their genetic integrity.  相似文献

Over a one year period (November 2000-December 2001), clinical specimens from 189 dogs and 38 cats, from the city of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, were examined at the Specialized Medical Mycology Center at the Federal University of Ceará to detect animals with dermatophytoses. The mycological analyses were conducted by direct microscopy and by fungal culture on Sabouraud agar, Sabouraud chloramphenicol agar and Mycosel agar. Dermatophytes were isolated from 27 of the 189 (14.3%) canine specimens and 14 of the 38 (36.8%) feline specimens. The identified dermatophytes were Microsporum canis (95%), M. gypseum (2.5%) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes (2.5%). Microsporum canis was the most common species isolated (92.6% and 100%, for dogs and cats respectively). The percentage of positive direct microscopic examinations of clinical specimens and positive cultures was 61%. There was a high proportion of positive cultures from cats less than 1 year of age, but in dogs no significant differences were detected. There were no significant differences between the sexes. Dermatophytes were more frequently isolated in March, April and May, but no significant differences were detected in the seasonal distribution of canine and feline dermatophytoses.  相似文献
