It has been well-established that many epiphytic bromeliads of the atmospheric-type morphology, i.e., with leaf surfaces completely covered by large, overlapping, multicellular trichomes, are capable of absorbing water vapor from the atmosphere when air humidity increases. It is much less clear, however, whether this absorption of water vapor can hydrate the living cells of the leaves and, as a consequence, enhance physiological processes in such cells. The goal of this research was to determine if the absorption of atmospheric water vapor by the atmospheric epiphyte Tillandsia usneoides results in an increase in turgor pressure in leaf epidermal cells that subtend the large trichomes, and, by using chlorophyll fluorescence techniques, to determine if the absorption of atmospheric water vapor by leaves of this epiphyte results in increased photosynthetic activity. Results of measurements on living cells of attached leaves of this epiphytic bromeliad, using a pressure probe and of whole-shoot fluorescence imaging analyses clearly illustrated that the turgor pressure of leaf epidermal cells did not increase, and the photosynthetic activity of leaves did not increase, following exposure of the leaves to high humidity air. These results experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, that the absorption of water vapor following increases in atmospheric humidity in atmospheric epiphytic bromeliads is mostly likely a physical phenomenon resulting from hydration of non-living leaf structures, e.g., trichomes, and has no physiological significance for the plant's living tissues.  相似文献

Abstract: In high cell density cultures it is virtually inevitable that the environment to which the cells are exposed is heterogeneous. Thus, with suspended cultures, individual cells are subject to temporal changes in their environment whereas with aggregated or immobilized cells, the culture can be considered as being formed by a number of subpopulations, each with its own environmental characteristics. In addition, in a high cell density environment, high concentrations of end products may negatively influence the growth rate. This may result in the selection of organisms with an altered metabolic behaviour or with a decreased sensitivity to the adverse effects of the product. We discuss the consequences of this heterogeneity with regard to carbon source metabolism in view of the ability of many bacterial species to adapt to environmental conditions. Selection of variant organisms was found to occur with Clostridium butyricum when grown for a prolonged time in a medium containing approx. I-50 mM glucose. In contrast to the original strain, these variants could sustain a high maximal growth rate in the presence of butyric acid. In addition, they had acquired the capacity to spontaneously form aggregates and were able to carry out a completely solventogenic fermentation. Heterogeneous metabolic activity in aggregated cells is demonstrated with cultures of Lactobacillus laevolacticus , an aggregateforming lactic acid bacterium that converts glucose completely to o-lactate. By using microelectrodes, we show that the fraction of metabolically active cells decreases with increasing aggregate size: in larger aggregates steep pH gradients occur with the effect that only the outer layer of the aggregate is metabolically active, i.e. contributes to lactic acid formation, whereas with smaller aggregates all cells remain active. As a result, the net specific lactic acid production rate of the population as a whole is not invariably increased with increased aggregate size.  相似文献

Desmidothrips n.gen. is described from New Zealand, with walkerae n.sp. as type‐species. Aeolothrips inauditus Bianchi from New Caledonia is transferred to this new genus. Desmidothrips is related to the Australian genus Desmothrips, and is the only member of the Aeolothripidae native to New Zealand.  相似文献

Torymus sinensis Kamijo (Hymenoptera, Torymidae), a classical biocontrol agent of chestnut gall wasp Dryocosmus kuriphilus (Hymenoptera, Cynipidae), was released in Croatia, Slovenia and Hungary in 2015. Following the introduction, the research of parasitism rates and population genetic indices on 40 different sites was performed to monitor and evaluate the success of establishment. The observed parasitism rates were unexpectedly high and negatively correlated with the distance from westernmost locality, while population genetic indices showed that populations of T. sinensis did not suffer from bottleneck‐induced founder effect phenomenon. Moreover, lack of genetic differentiation demonstrates that all populations share similar genetic structure, which could be shaped only by high levels of gene flow. We conclude that T. sinensis established viable and genetically diverse populations and successfully spread naturally from Italy across Slovenia to Croatia and Hungary.  相似文献

In this paper we report the thermal behavior of a new approach for vitrification. Thermal performance of traditional open pulled straws is compared with a new technique based on the combined use of quartz capillaries with slush nitrogen. This new method of vitrification achieved ultrafast cooling rates of 250,000 °C/min. As a result, a much lower concentration of cryoprotectant was needed to reach vitrification. In fact, a cryoprotectant solution typically used in oocyte slow freezing protocols was shown to remain transparent after cooling to liquid nitrogen temperatures indicating apparent “vitrification”. This approach offers a new and very promising technique for vitrification of cells using low levels of cryoprotectants.  相似文献

The leaves of some plants display an optical patchiness on their upper side, displaying light- and dark-green areas with high and low reflectance, respectively. In this investigation, we studied the fine structure of the corresponding sectors and we asked whether the lost reflected light entails a photosynthetic cost to these leaves. Four species, i.e. Arum italicum, Ranunculus ficaria, Cyclamen hederifolium and Cyclamen persicum were investigated. Scanning electron microscope examination revealed that epidermal cells of light-green sectors of all species are more bulgy than corresponding cells of neighboring dark-green leaf sectors. The comparative anatomical study revealed that (i) epidermis thickness of the light-green areas and the number of mesophyll cell layers does not differ from those of the adjacent dark-green leaf sectors and (ii) palisade cells of light-green sectors are slightly larger and more loosely arranged, allowing a much higher percentage of intercellular air spaces. The latter histological feature seems to provide the structural basis for the different optical properties between the two leaf sectors. Contrary to expectations, net photosynthetic rates (expressed on a leaf area basis) were similar in the light-green and the dark-green areas of the two cyclamen species. Yet, in C. persicum net photosynthesis was higher in the light-green areas, if expressed on a dry mass basis. The small size of the light-green spots in the rest of the test plants precluded CO2 assimilation measurements, yet maximum linear photosynthetic electron transport rates displayed no differences between the two sectors in all plants. Thus, the assumption of a photosynthetic cost in the light-green areas was not confirmed. On the contrary, a higher construction cost was evident in the dark-green areas of three species, displaying a significantly higher specific leaf mass, without any photosynthetic benefit. The results on net photosynthesis were compatible with leaf optical properties and pigment levels. Thus, in spite of the considerably higher reflectance of the light-green areas and their lower (yet normal for a green leaf) chlorophyll levels, corresponding differences in absorptance were slight. In addition, dry mass-based pigment contents in dark-green areas were higher, while chlorophyll a/b (in two species) and carotenoid/chlorophyll ratios (in three species) were lower, pointing to a shade adaptation in these sectors. We conclude that in variegated leaves of this kind, dark-green areas are more costly to build and probably less photosynthetically active. We argue that the high pigment contents of dark-green areas establish steep light gradients in the corresponding mesophyll, rendering deeper chloroplast layers more shade adapted.  相似文献

1. Male-biased sexual size dimorphism (SSD) in mammals has been explained by sexual selection favouring large, competitive males. However, new research has identified other potential factors leading to SSD. The aim of this review is to evaluate current research on the causes of SSD in mammals and to investigate some consequences of SSD, including costs to the larger sex and sexual segregation. 2. While larger males appear to gain reproductive benefits from their size, studies have also identified alternative mating strategies, unexpected variance in mating success and found no clear relationship between degree of polygyny and dimorphism. This implies that sexual selection is unlikely to be the single selective force directing SSD. 3. Latitude seems to influence SSD primarily through variation in overall body size and seasonal food availability, which affect potential for polygyny. Likewise, population density influences resource availability and evidence suggests that food scarcity differentially constrains the growth of the sexes. Diverging growth patterns between the sexes appear to be the primary physiological mechanism leading to SSD. 4. Female-biased dimorphism is most adequately explained by reduced male–male competition resulting in a decrease in male size. Female–female competition for dominance and resources, including mates, may also select for increased female size. 5. Most studies found that sexual segregation arises through asynchrony of activity budgets between the sexes. The larger sex can suffer sex-biased mortality through increased parasite load, selective predation and the difficulty associated with sustaining a larger body size under conditions of resource scarcity. 6. None of the variables considered here appears to contribute a disproportionate amount to SSD in mammals. Several promising avenues of research are currently overlooked and long-term studies, which have previously been biased toward ungulates, should be carried out on a variety of taxa.  相似文献

The hybrid strain Pseudomonas sp. WR4016 was subcultivated with increasing concentrations of 5-chlorosalicylate (510 mM) as sole carbon source over a period of 9 months. At intervals of approximately 3 months derivative strains WR4017, WR4018 and WR4019 were isolated which exhibited higher growth rates and increased substrate tolerance. Comparative analysis of the turnover rates of the key enzymes in chlorosalicylate degradation showed that the adaptation process did not result from structural modifications of these proteins. Instead, balanced over-production of the salicylate hydroxylase and catechol 1,2-dioxygenase prevented the accumulation of toxic chlorocatechols and accounted for the reduction of the doubling times with 4- or 5-chlorosalicylate. A comparative analysis of a genetically engineered chlorosalicylate degrader PL300-1 showed similar regulatory patterns as the most advanced isolate WR4019 from the adaptation series.  相似文献
