Although pollution due to nuclear accidents constitutes some of the largest environmental disasters, there is surprisingly little information available on the relationship between abundance of animals and background radiation. We sampled invertebrates with pit-fall traps at Chernobyl in areas differing in background radiation level by more than four orders of magnitude. We obtained samples from 58 traps for 19 taxa of which five showed positive associations (Acari, Araneae, Formica sp., Homoptera), while four showed negative associations (Coleoptera, Collembola, Vespa, Insecta). These relationships were independent of other environmental factors such as habitat, humidity and ecotype. Estimates of the relationship between abundance and background radiation from the pitfall trap study were similar to those from an independent study based on invertebrates found under slices of wood placed on the ground. The differences in relationship between abundance and radiation among taxa may arise from direct effects of radiation. The findings reported here have implications for choice of animal taxa for efficient monitoring of the biological impact of radiation on animals.  相似文献

Daily rhythms in mammals are controlled by the circadian system, which is a collection of biological clocks regulated by a central pacemaker within the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the anterior hypothalamus. Changes in SCN function have pronounced consequences for behaviour and physiology; however, few studies have examined whether individual differences in circadian behaviour reflect changes in SCN function. Here, PERIOD2::LUCIFERASE mice were exposed to a behavioural assay to characterize individual differences in baseline entrainment, rate of re-entrainment and free-running rhythms. SCN slices were then collected for ex vivo bioluminescence imaging to gain insight into how the properties of the SCN clock influence individual differences in behavioural rhythms. First, individual differences in the timing of locomotor activity rhythms were positively correlated with the timing of SCN rhythms. Second, slower adjustment during simulated jetlag was associated with a larger degree of phase heterogeneity among SCN neurons. Collectively, these findings highlight the role of the SCN network in determining individual differences in circadian behaviour. Furthermore, these results reveal novel ways that the network organization of the SCN influences plasticity at the behavioural level, and lend insight into potential interventions designed to modulate the rate of resynchronization during transmeridian travel and shift work.  相似文献

The climate is warming at an unprecedented rate, pushing many species toward and beyond the upper temperatures at which they can survive. Global change is also leading to dramatic shifts in the distribution of pathogens. As a result, upper thermal limits and susceptibility to infection should be key determinants of whether populations continue to persist, or instead go extinct. Within a population, however, individuals vary in both their resistance to both heat stress and infection, and their contributions to vital growth rates. No more so is this true than for males and females. Each sex often varies in their response to pathogen exposure, thermal tolerances, and particularly their influence on population growth, owing to the higher parental investment that females typically make in their offspring. To date, the interplay between host sex, infection, and upper thermal limits has been neglected. Here, we explore the response of male and female Daphnia to bacterial infection and static heat stress. We find that female Daphnia, when uninfected, are much more resistant to static heat stress than males, but that infection negates any advantage that females are afforded. We discuss how the capacity of a population to cope with multiple stressors may be underestimated unless both sexes are considered simultaneously.  相似文献

A study was undertaken of a unique sample of 63 wild vervet monkeys Cercopithecus aethiops from a single population in Uganda collected over 35 days in 1947. Twenty-five were immature (12 females and 13 males) and 38 were adults (16 females and 22 males). Body mass, external measurements, masticatory and other masses were recorded for each individual at the time of collection, and for a few specimens, the development of the reproductive organs. Each individual was evaluated for cranial capacity, limb length and dental eruption. The comparison of immature and adult animals illustrates the mosaic nature of growth in the different body systems, as well as female–male differences. An ancestral model is proposed for catarrhine growth and development, with particular reference to sex differences. This model provides a framework for assessment of immatures and for the reconstruction of socio-ecological effects on life-history stages in populations of fossil monkeys, apes and early hominids.  相似文献

The interactions of plant clone and abiotic factors on a gall-making midge   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Within and around Tampa Bay, Florida, monoclonal populations of the sea daisy, Borrichia frutescens, can be found on small, isolated islands growing within the intertidal zone. Stem tips of Borrichia are attacked by the gall-making cecidomyiid, Asphondyliaborrichiae. We used reciprocal transplants of Borrichia clones between islands to assess the importance of plant genotype and local environmental conditions (shade and host-plant nitrogen) on gall abundance. In another experiment, we controlled for host genotype effects by inducing differences in local environmental conditions through the addition of NH4NO3 fertilizer and/or shade to field plots at the only monoclonal site with a large enough population of Borrichia to facilitate the experiment. We also examined the effect of these variables on attack levels of Asphondylia by parasitoids. In the reciprocal transplant, while some Borrichia clones always supported more galls than others, regardless of environmental conditions, all four clones developed more galls when they were placed in the shade, compared to those in the sun, at all four sites. In addition, some islands always supported more galls than others and we found a significant clone × site interaction. In the single-clone experiment, Borrichia in fertilized- and shaded-only plots developed more Asphondylia galls than those from nonmanipulated control plots, and plants that received both shading and fertilizer developed the most galls. Although shade and fertilization produced an additive increase in plant nitrogen content, their effects resulted in a synergistic decrease in C:N ratio. Neither shading nor host plant nitrogen content had a significant effect on levels of parasitism between experimental and control plants. Our results suggest that genetic differences in Borrichia's susceptibility to Asphondylia attack are important in shaping the distribution of galls, but environmental factors such as soil nitrogen and degree of shading are at least as important as genetic differences between host plants. Knowledge of the residency patterns of marine mammals is an important element for management and conservation strategies. Here we investigate a population of Grampus griseus off Pico Island, Azores. Our data set covers the period 2004–2007, based on at‐sea observations of 1,250 individually identified animals, 303 of known or assumed sex. Using photo identification and GPS locations we calculated mean monthly sighting rates and lagged identification rates to analyze temporal patterns, and estimated kernel density to study the home range. Our results show site fidelity and relatively restricted home ranges, which corroborate the existence of a resident population on the study site. We further document sex differences, including a higher number of males present in the area at any given time but females staying for longer consecutive periods, and male home ranges with significantly less overlap than those of females. These observations are consistent with a mating system based on multimale pods defending areas where females periodically return. We hypothesize that squid distribution is a major factor in structuring these patterns. These findings reinforce the need for a precautionary management approach that would include limiting pressure from commercial activities.  相似文献

A considerable amount of symbiotic functional variability has been demonstrated among arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) species. However, little is known about the functional divergence in AMF communities from contrasting climates. Ecotypes of Pennisetum flaccidum were grown in growth chambers with AMF communities originating from two elevations (3 105 and 4 176 m asl) on Mount Segrila in Tibet. The combinations were grown under two temperature regimes (7–12 °C and 14–19 °C), equivalent to the mean temperatures during the growing season at the two elevations. AMF communities from different elevations showed different fungal performance at both temperatures. In most cases, AMF from cold habitats developed higher intraradical and extraradical colonization at 7–12 °C than AMF from the warmer habitat, and vice versa. For mycorrhizal growth responses (MGR), there was no consistent local versus foreign effect, but AMF inoculum from colder habitats consistently led to a higher MGR than the other inoculum. These results provide strong evidence for functional differences among AMF communities from contrasting climates.  相似文献

Testosterone (T) is a key hormone regulating behavioral trade-offs in male birds, shifting investment towards sexual and competitive behaviors. However, the role of T in regulating male behavior during the molt has received very little attention, although this is a crucial life-history stage. Since the effect of T on behavior may be condition-dependent, particularly during the costly molt period, we studied the effects of T and condition in a two-way design. We manipulated T under two dietary regimes (standard and improved, resulting in an enhanced condition) in captive blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) undergoing the first pre-basic molt. T treatment increased song frequency, indicating that song is T-dependent also at this time of year. Males on the improved diet sang less than males in relatively worse condition, providing no support for song as an indicator of male condition. T-treated males exhibited greater locomotor activity than control males, but only when fed the standard diet. Neither T- nor diet-treatment affected plumage maintenance (preening). Although T treatment resulted in a delay in molt progress all birds completed the molt. Taken together our results show that during the molt male birds are sensitive to relatively small fluctuations in T. Similar to its commonly observed effects during the breeding season, T stimulated an increase in song and locomotion. While there might be some benefits associated with such T effects, these must be traded-off against costs associated with conspicuous behavior and increased molt duration.  相似文献

It has been suggested that polyandry allows females to increase offspring genetic diversity and reduce the prevalence and susceptibility of their offspring to infectious diseases. We tested this hypothesis in wild‐derived house mice (Mus musculus) by experimentally infecting the offspring from 15 single‐ and 15 multiple‐sired litters with two different strains of a mouse pathogen (Salmonella Typhimurium) and compared their ability to control infection. We found a high variation in individual infection resistance (measured with pathogen loads) and significant differences among families, suggesting genetic effects on Salmonella resistance, but we found no difference in prevalence or infection resistance between single‐ vs. multiple‐sired litters. We found a significant sex difference in infection resistance, but surprisingly, males were more resistant to infection than females. Also, infection resistance was correlated with weight loss during infection, although only for females, indicating that susceptibility to infection had more harmful health consequences for females than for males. To our knowledge, our findings provide the first evidence for sex‐dependent resistance to Salmonella infection in house mice. Our results do not support the hypothesis that multiple‐sired litters are more likely to survive infection than single‐sired litters; however, as we explain, additional studies are required before ruling out this hypothesis.  相似文献
