Objectives: To record self‐reported hygiene habits, examine the oral conditions of a sample group of institutionalised elderly, and examine possible relationships between these habits and conditions. Design: Cross‐sectional. Setting: All the institutions for the elderly in Taubaté, Brazil. Subjects: The entire population of these institutionalised elderly people (n = 553). Intervention: The subjects were interviewed and underwent an oral examination. Main outcome measures: Oral hygiene habits, oral conditions and statistical relationships between habits and oral conditions were recorded. Results: The average age of the subjects who knew their age (n = 364) was 74.9 years (±12.9), and 64.7% of the sample group were females. Denture‐related stomatitis was found in 19.5%, impaired manual dexterity in 40%, dry mouth sensation in 36.3%, difficulty in performing oral hygiene in 20%, no oral hygiene‐related orientation in 54.1%, no periodic oral examinations in 59.5%, and no tongue cleaning in 68.3% was declared. Among dentate subjects, 73.3% had periodontal disease, 54.7% had caries, 26% reported no toothbrushing, and 7.3% reported flossing. Of the denture wearers, 7% did not brush their dentures. Denture‐related stomatitis showed a statistical relationship with impaired manual dexterity (p = 0.012) and an inverse statistical relationship with denture brushing frequency (p = 0.006). Periodontal disease showed an inverse relationship to flossing (p < 0.001) and tongue cleaning (p = 0.0026). Caries showed an inverse relationship with tooth‐brushing (p = 0.043), flossing (0.022), proper oral hygiene orientation (p = 0.041) and periodical check‐ups (p = 0.007). Conclusion: Oral hygiene practices in this sample group were found to be inadequate, and statistically significant relationships were verified between the lack of good oral hygiene practices and the deleterious oral conditions.  相似文献

Objective: The relationship of the levels of cariogenic bacterial species with periodontal status and decayed root surfaces was investigated in elderly Japanese subjects. Methods: Three hundred and sixty‐eight individuals (each 75 years old) were examined for periodontal status (pocket depth, attachment loss), root surface caries and salivary levels of mutans streptococci (MS) and lactobacilli (LB). Results: Values >4 mm of attachment loss (rAL4) and for average attachment loss (aAL) of sites measured were significantly higher in subjects with LB than those without. Multiple regression analysis also showed a correlation between aAL and rAL4 values with the presence of LB (aAL p = 0.003; rAL4 p = 0.002). Further, multiple regression analysis of interacting factors regarding decayed root surfaces showed that LB carriers had a greater incidence of decayed root surface caries (p = 0.003), while MS and LB levels were correlated to the number of decayed root surfaces (LB p = 0.010; MS p = 0.026). Conclusion: Our results indicate that considerable attachment loss elevates the possibility of having LB, thus increasing the risk of root surface caries. It was also found that LB and MS measurements may be useful indicators of decayed root surfaces in elderly individuals with attachment loss.  相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2011.00507.x Oral status in home‐dwelling elderly dependent on moderate or substantial supportive care for daily living: prevalence of edentulous subjects, caries and periodontal disease Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of edentulous subjects, caries and periodontal disease among the home‐dwelling elderly with moderate and substantial needs of support for daily living. Materials and method: A sample of 302 randomly selected elderly with moderate or substantial needs of supportive care were examined in Sweden. Several oral clinical variables were registered: number of teeth, dentures, caries, probing pocket depth, gingival bleeding and Eichner’s index. Results: Both in general and in oral health, the differences were small when comparing elderly with moderate and substantial care needs for daily living. Those with substantial needs had more caries lesions (p < 0.01) and more gingival bleeding (p < 0.05), while the number of teeth and prevalence of edentulous subjects did not differ in relation to the need of daily support. The elderly had, on average, 9.8–11.7 teeth, one‐third of whom had no natural teeth. According to Eichner’s index, half of the elderly in both groups had no opposing tooth contacts. Fifty‐five per cent used dentures. Conclusions: Elderly people with needs of supportive care have lost many teeth before they become dependent. Health promotion should be a priority in early ageing populations to prevent oral diseases and tooth loss.  相似文献

调查评估年龄<12岁儿童口腔内变形链球菌及乳酸杆菌的检出情况及其与龋病的相关性。100例纳入实验的受试者根据不同龋敏感程度分为无龋组(DMFS=0)50人,高龋组(DMFS≥6)50人,按照不同龋敏感度、不同部位采集样本,用乳酸杆菌选择性培养基Rogosa和变形链球菌选择性培养基MSB,将乳酸杆菌和变形链球菌分离,经形态学及生化鉴定。统计2种细菌在不同分组中的检出率及不同致龋菌病例数,研究二者的致龋相关性。乳酸杆菌在100例研究对象中乳酸杆菌在龋坏深层检出率最高76%与光滑面(40%)、窝沟(48%)及唾液(40%)检出率比较有统计学意义(P<0.05),而龋坏深层变形链球菌检出率46%与光滑面(84%)、窝沟(68%)及唾液(78%)检出率比较最低(P<0.05);高龋人群变形链球菌检出率88%,乳酸杆菌检出率为76%均较无龋组相应细菌检出率26%、28%差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。变形链球菌和乳酸杆菌随着龋敏感度的增加,乳酸杆菌和变形链球菌检出率增高;在龋坏深层更适于乳酸杆菌生长,且其对变形链球菌有一定的抑制作用。  相似文献

In the present study, sulphated polysaccharide Ulvan from Ulva lactuca was used for the synthesis of biogenic Selenium Nanoparticles (SeNPs) conjugate and Mouth rinse was prepared using this conjugate. The synthesis of nanoparticles was confirmed by UV–Visible spectrophotometry and characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). TEM showed that the average size of the nanoparticle was 85 nm and spherical in shape. Furthermore, nanoparticle conjugates were evaluated for cell viability using MTT assay 3T3-L1 cell line and at 30 µl/ml showed 34% cell viability. The antimicrobial activity of SeNPs mouth rinse was tested against oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, Lactobacillus, and Candida albicans and it was effective against all tested microorganism at the concentration of 100 µl/ml. The present study has shown that Ulvan from algal biomass can be a safe and effective source for the development of oral nano-antimicrobial agents.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the effects of short-chain, middle-chain, and long-chain fatty acids on the activity of rat liver α-amino-β-carboxymuconate-ε-semialdehyde decarboxylase [EC 4.1.1.45] (ACMSD), a key enzyme of tryptophan-niacin metabolism. Moreover, we examined the cholesterol metabolism and lipid peroxidation in relation to ACMSD activity in rats. When diets containing 2%, 5%, and 10% levels of fatty acids were given to rats for a week, saturated fatty acids and elaidic acid (trans form) did not suppress the ACMSD activity in liver. But polyunsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic acid, linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) strongly suppressed the liver ACMSD activity. Five % sorbic acid and oleic acid tended to suppress the liver ACMSD activity weakly. On the other hand, this report indicated that there is no correlation between liver ACMSD activity and cholesterol levels of serum or liver, but there is a weak negative correlation between liver malondialdehyde concentration and liver ACMSD specific activity.  相似文献

This study evaluated the cytotoxicity and effect of fragments derived from three oral cationic peptides (CP): LL-37, D6-17 and D1-23 against cariogenic bacteria under planktonic and biofilm conditions. For cytotoxicity analysis, two epithelial cell lines were used. The minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimal bactericidal concentration were determined for the CP fragments and the control (chlorhexidine-CHX) against cariogenic bacteria. The fractional inhibitory concentration was obtained for the combinations of CP fragments on Streptococcus mutans. Biofilm assays were conducted with the best antimicrobial CP fragment against S. mutans. The results indicated that D6-17 was not cytotoxic. D1-23, LL-37 and CHX were not cytotoxic in low concentrations. D1-23 presented the best bactericidal activity against S. mutans, S. mitis and S. salivarius. Combinations of CP fragments did not show a synergic effect. D1-23 presented a higher activity against S. mutans biofilm than CHX. It was concluded that D1-23 showed a substantial effect against cariogenic bacteria and low cytotoxicity.  相似文献

Repetitive sequence-based polymerase chain reaction (PCR) fingerprinting using the (GTG)(5) primer was applied for fast screening of bacterial strains isolated from dental plaque of early childhood caries (ECC)-affected children. A group of 29 Gram-positive bacteria was separated into a homogeneous cluster together with Streptococcus mutans reference strains and constituted an aberrant branch after the numerical analysis of (GTG)(5)-PCR fingerprints. Automated ribotyping with EcoRI restriction enzyme (RiboPrinter microbial characterization system) revealed high genetic heterogeneity among the tested group and proved to be a good tool for strain-typing purposes. Further characterization of the studied strains was achieved by extensive phenotyping and whole-cell protein fingerprinting and confirmed all the strains as S. mutans representatives. Obtained results showed rep-PCR fingerprinting with the (GTG)(5) primer to be a fast and reliable method for identification of S. mutans.  相似文献
