Arguably the most useful model of evolution emerged from the mind of Sewall Wright when he invented the fitness landscape (Wright 1932 ). In a recent issue of Molecular Ecology, Martin & Feinstein ( 2014 ) investigate the genetics and demographic history of an adaptive radiation of pupfish on San Salvador Island. Since the founder species colonized the island 10 000 years ago, two descendent species have appeared and in several lakes all three species (a durophage, a scale‐eater, and the generalist ancestral form) coexist. The three species are thought to occupy three distinct fitness peaks. The durophage and generalists' peaks are close, whereas the scale‐eater's peak is predicted to be distant and separated from the other two by a deep valley. Consistent with this view, gene flow between the two species on close fitness peaks is greater than the gene flow between these two species and the third species on a more distant peak. Correspondingly, the inferred fitness landscape predicts progress towards speciation, with more limited separation of species on close peaks, and that speciation is more complete for the scale‐eater. The article provides an illustrative example of the power afforded by analysis of large numbers of SNPs for estimating key parameters underlying evolutionary divergence. 相似文献

In this study, sensitivities of 156 Sclerotinia sclerotiorum isolates collected from sunflower fields of West Azarbaijan province, Iran, were assessed to carbendazim and iprodione, and the baseline sensitivities were established for azoxystrobin and tebuconazole. Resistance to carbendazim and iprodione was observed in 53.85% and 4.49% of the isolates, respectively. The 50% effective concentration (EC50) values of azoxystrobin for the isolates ranged from 0.017 to 3.515 μg/ml with a mean of 0.330 μg/ml, and 8.97% of the strains showed low levels of resistance to the fungicide. However, in the presence of salicylhydroxamic acid, all isolates were sensitive to azoxystrobin and EC50 values ranged from 0.015 to 0.263 μg/ml with a mean of 0.086 μg/ml. All isolates were found to be sensitive to tebuconazole, and EC50 values ranged from 0.003 to 0.177 μg/ml with a mean of 0.036 μg/ml. Among the multiple-resistant isolates, the strains exhibiting resistance to both carbendazim and iprodione were detected in the highest frequency (4.49%). No correlation was observed between mycelial growth and aggressiveness with fungicide sensitivity of the isolates suggesting the absence of fitness cost associated with resistance to the studied fungicides. The results indicated that iprodione, azoxystrobin and tebuconazole could be effectively used in rotation or mixture in spray programmes to manage S. sclerotiorum in the region. The baselines established for azoxystrobin and tebuconazole would be useful in monitoring the fungal populations in the province to assess possible shifts in fungicide sensitivity of S. sclerotiorum isolates in the future. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. Life-history traits and density were assayed in seven populations of two sympatric species of wolf spider for three consecutive years. The goal of the study was to quantify population dynamics and its relation to spatial and temporal life-history variation.
2. Adult female body size and fecundity varied significantly, among field sites and among years, in both species. Female spiders of both species differed in mean relative reproductive effort among sites, but not among years. The size of offspring was invariable, with no significant differences due to site or year.
3. All populations of both species tended to either decrease or increase in density during a given year and this was tightly correlated with changes in prey consumption rates.
4. Since life-history patterns are determined primarily by selection, it is concluded that size at sexual maturity for females is phenotypically plastic and responds to changes in prey availability. Offspring size however is not plastic and it is likely that other selection forces have determined offspring size. It is often assumed that mating with close relatives reduces offspring fitness. In such cases, reduced offspring fitness may arise from inbreeding depression (i.e., genetic effects of elevated homozygosity) or from post‐mating maternal investment. This can be due to a reduction in female investment after mating with genetically incompatible males (“differential allocation”) or compensation for incompatibility (“reproductive compensation”). Here, we looked at the effects of mating with relatives on offspring fitness in mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki. In this species, females are assumed to be nonplacental and to allocate resources to eggs before fertilization, limiting differential allocation. We looked at the effects of mating with a brother or with an unrelated male on brood size, offspring size, gestation period, and early offspring growth. Mating with a relative reduced the number of offspring at birth, but there was no difference in the likelihood of breeding, gestation time, nor in the size or growth of these offspring. We suggest that due to limited potential for maternal effects to influence these traits that any reduction in offspring fitness, or lack thereof, can be explained by inbreeding depression rather than by maternal effects. We highlight the importance of considering the potential role of maternal effects when studying inbreeding depression and encourage further studies in other Poeciliid species with different degrees of placentation to test whether maternal effects mask or amplify any genetic effects of mating with relatives. 相似文献

Determining the relationship between individual life‐history traits and population dynamics is an essential step to understand and predict natural selection. Model organisms that can be conveniently studied experimentally at both levels are invaluable to test the rich body of theoretical literature in this area. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, despite being a well‐established workhorse in genetics, has only recently received attention from ecologists and evolutionary biologists, especially with respect to its association with pathogenic bacteria. In order to start filling the gap between the two areas, we conducted a series of experiments aiming at measuring life‐history traits as well as population growth of C. elegans in response to three different bacterial strains: Escherichia coli OP50, Salmonella enterica Typhimurium, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. Whereas previous studies had established that the latter two reduced the survival of nematodes feeding on them compared to E. coli OP50, we report for the first time an enhancement in reproductive success and population growth for worms feeding on S. enterica Typhimurium. Furthermore, we used an age‐specific population dynamic model, parameterized using individual life‐history assays, to successfully predict the growth of populations over three generations. This study paves the way for more detailed and quantitative experimental investigation of the ecology and evolution of C. elegans and the bacteria it interacts with, which could improve our understanding of the fate of opportunistic pathogens in the environment. 相似文献
